a lot of folks were talking about it this weekend, experiencing the heat. will it continue this week? >> yeah, it's going to wane for a little bit and then ramp back up again. so we're going to have it coming in waves for us in the bay area. take a look at our high temperatures for this afternoon, as we head for the mid-80s in the south bay. and then for the peninsula it's still pretty mild this afternoon, with upper 70s and then you head to the try valley and it's much hotter, reaching into the low 90s. that's about 10 degrees lower compared to what we had yesterday and over the weekend. for the east bay we'll see temperatures reaching into the mid-70s, san francisco, as we see that colorful sunrise, it's in the upper 60s, and 85 in the north bay. now, we are seeing quite a bit of action here over the weekend after the heat. we had storms firing up and it affected parts of the north bay with some isolated rain, but really watching out for those dangerous lightning strikes and

lightning this time of year can spark wildfires and we're watching out for the potential that some of the strikes we had yesterday may be smoldering in some of the brush. we're going to know to see heat ramping up over the next couple of days. that's going to be the big story. a little bit of a break and then more by the end of the week. >> those lightning concerns there, kari, they're just the latest heat-related issue where power surges led to some outages. >> bob redell joins us live from the tri-valley this morning. it's going to be hot today, at least in that area. more fire concerns certainly remain. dry out there, bob. >> reporter: it is. good morning to you. first off, it is already warm out here, it's 73 degrees at 6:00 a.m., the sun is just coming up. so we expect in pleasanton temperatures will be another 20 degrees higher. speaking of what you were just alluding to, this is video from the santa rosa fire department from yesterday which shows lightning in the north bay. the concern, of course, being wildfires, lightning striking

dry brush and we don't have any reports of that happening. but we know it's happened in the past. firefighters are asking us to keep an eye out for smoke or flame if you see it in the hills. don't assume someone else has reported it. if you see something, they want you to call 911 immediately. case in point, this is time lapse video of a 16-acre wildfire burning right now north of sacramento. cal fire is aware. they've been sending firefighters to the scene trying to get them there. this started overnight. we would assume they're already on the scene but we haven't been able to confirm that as of yet. as you mentioned, the hot weather caused a number of power outages across our region but pg&e says it is making progress in restoring electricity. as you can see from the real time look at pg&e's online outage map, the outage east of castro valley and hayward is down to 200 customers. there are smaller outages scattered throughout the south bay. earlier yesterday nearly 2,500 customers were in the dark in

walnut creek but pg&e has turned the lights back on for most people. the weather was hot enough to cause problems for the national weather service in the bay area yesterday. the agency tweeted out that its radar was down because of an air-conditioning issue. the radar equipment is near san jose, with the radar turned out for hours, the national weather service had to monitor weather through offshore at slights. the hot weather sent about 50 people to the cooling center at the prush farm park over the weekend and that included jenny glasgow. who the mercury started rising, the 82-year-old says her health started going downhill. >> in the afternoon it was so hot and i feel like my head is growing something inside, and then i feel so weak like i'm going to faint. >> reporter: and jenny knows firsthand the impacts of high

temps. during the last heat wave the first weekend in july, jenny ended up in a hospital emergency room with severe dehydration. reporting live here in pleasanton, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. as this weather continues, our team will bring you the latest on this extreme heat, both on air, as well as on nbcbayarea.com. we also have our free nbc bay area app, which is a great resource. you will get a customized forecast where you live. in a surprise development, it now appears the days of bay area thoroughbred horse racing are numbered, after more than 80 years the operators of golden gate fields yesterday announced plans to close at the end of the current season. that means no more horse racing after october 2nd. ownership plans to focus, instead, on its southern california operations. one member of the california horse racing board says the big concern right now is for track workers likely to lose their jobs. >> we're going to be pressing

the industry, you know, to find out what they intend to do to help those people. we're very concerned about that. >> in a statement, track ownership says it is committed to honoring labor obligations and developing a meaningful transition plan. golden gate fields opened back in 1941. bay area's other longtime racetrack, bay meadows, closed 15 years ago after opening in 1934. 6:05 right now. turning to decision 2024 and the race for president. in six months the first dominos will start to fall in the iowa caucus, but in some cases some of the early gop contenders are already starting to show signs of financial weakness. "today in the bay"'s alice barr is live in washington. alice, creativity may be the key for those lesser-known challengers, hoping to get noticed in the upcoming debate. >> reporter: they have to, marcus, in order to make it onto the stage. we're talking about things from gift cards to soccer tickets that are being thrown into the mix to try to entice those

donors. looking at the bigger picture, stepping back, what we're seeing is that former president trump is still the far and away leader against gop rivals, but at this stage president biden has doubled the trump haul. with the iowa caucus now just six months away, new fundraising numbers are offering a critical look at how the candidates are performing. second quarter fundraising totals show president biden raking in $72 million. the first quarterly look since he announced his re-election campaign. compare that to $35 million for former president trump and $20 million for florida governor ron desantis. over the weekend, the former president taking aim at desantis. >> he's dropping so quickly, he's probably not going to be in second place much longer. >> reporter: governor desantis looking to quiet concerns that he's not gaining enough traction, pointing to feedback from iowa voters. >> now that i've seen you, i'm for you. that's going to be what we're going to do over the next six

months. >> reporter: lesser-known candidates are focused on meeting requirements to join the first republican debate next month. entrepreneur vivek ramaswamy letting supporters keep a 10% commission of what they bring in. north dakota governor bergam is offering $20 gift cards. miami mayor suarez is raffling off a front row seat to see messi's debut. >> i'm not going to have an opportunity to keep having this conversation unless i have your support in the form of that contribution. >> reporter: the gop front-runner, former president trump, threatening to skip the first debate, already looking ahead to taking on president biden. and in order to make the debate stage next month, republican candidates have to secure 40,000 unique donors in addition to meeting some polling requirements and also promising to support whoever becomes the gop nominee, marcus.

>> some of that real work now begins. alice barr in washington this morning, thank you. one south bay family is opening up about losing everything in a weekend house fire. it happened saturday afternoon on swanson lane in gilroy. family members are thankful no one was injured but now they're struggling with losing all but the clothes on their backs. >> we lost everything, the house, all our clothes, all our furniture, the home. all of that is replaceable. but it's hard when you lose pictures and memories of your family, you know. >> the cause of that fire is still under investigation. well, a now infamous sea otter is getting a lot of attention for its unusual high jinx, mainly for occupying empty surfboards and leaving surfers hanging loose in the water. here is new video posted saturday, appearing to show the otter known as 841 riding

another board. that makes it at least four surfers forced into the standoffs with this otter. rangers are still trying to capture the otter which was born in captivity at the uc santa cruz research center and raised in the aquarium before being released into the ocean. he's, like, this is my summer vacation, move over. >> i like that board and that board. i know a lot of people trying to get into the water to cool off over the weekend. a spectacle to see a surfing sea otter. >> it's california. >> take a look at this sunrise this morning, as you get ready to get up and head out in san francisco. some of that wildfire smoke gave us colorful hues in the sky yesterday and it continues this morning, coming down from oregon. we'll talk more later about how that affects our air quality, but you do want to limit your

time outside and try to get in those outdoor workouts or any outdoor activities before it heats up. brentwood starts out in the low 70s so it's already warm this morning and we can see how quickly it will be warming up as we go throughout the day. we head back to triple digits in brentwood. most inland valleys will reach up to about 93, 94 degrees, about 10 degrees lower than yesterday. in fremont expect it to reach 86 for a high today while mountain view will see a high of 82. we're still in the 60s in san francisco. a big jump in temperatures with a short drive to novato and even hotter in santa rosa. now, we are going to continue to see a nice cooldown for the next couple of days. i'll have more on that, as well as when it gets hot again, coming up in a few minutes. let's get on the roads with a live look outside in oakland as we take a look at traffic. we are seeing that things are flowing smoothly on 880 and we've seen a couple of minor

looking at southbound 101 from van ness, takes about 11 minutes and overall a smooth flow of traffic. i'll keep an eye to see if any issues pop up. a look at weather, traffic and a big change in temperatures coming up in a few minutes. well, wall street is set for a mixed open ahead of a busy week of earnings. the markets are coming off of a winning week with the dow rising more than 2%. its best gain since march. the move comes on the back of solid earnings from big banks and cooler than expected inflation data. now, the focus this week, data on retail sales and housing. tesla is celebrating its first cyber truck, which rolled off the assembly line in texas this weekend. this is after more than two years of delays. check it out. you can see this was taken at the giga factory in texas. the ceo, elon musk, first unveiled a prototype of the

futuristic electric truck back in 2019, but production has been repeatedly pushed back due to tesla saying that there were supply chain issues they were dealing with. musk has promised the first cyber trucks would be made this year with the ramp-up in production starting next year. this is tesla's biggest new vehicle launch since the model y back in 2020. it is 6:16 right now. america's seventh highest lottery jackpot could be yours tonight. we're talking $900 million for picking all six numbers. and that's not all. the mega millions jackpot continues to grow, if you hit all six numbers in that drawing tomorrow night, you could win nearly $650 million. of course winning both jackpots would net you $1.5 billion before taxes. if you're looking for a fancy meal without the fancy meal price, four bay area restaurants have been added to a michelin list. >> it highlights restaurants offering a three-course meal at

the north bay, especially around ukiah and clear lake yesterday. and it may be more concentrated. this is a model of near surface smoke and you can see the plumes that get pushed our way, especially into the north bay, but may also reduce our air quality in parts of the east bay and give us more of a hazy sky as we go into the afternoon. we saw the bright orange sky yesterday evening and that was the reason why. we're seeing it again this morning. then as we take a look at temperatures, another reason why we're limiting our time outside, especially in the valleys, it's going to be hot once again. but these numbers are about 10 degrees lower than what we had yesterday afternoon, with livermore reaching 93. we'll hit a high of about 80 in highward, 75 in san mateo, and san francisco reaching 68 degrees. it will be even cooler tomorrow. we get fresh breezes and hopefully that also improves air quality with winds coming in from the west. as we go into wednesday, also looking nice and mild. we're going to cool down for a little bit. take a look at what's been

happening all across the south, with phoenix today headed back into 116 degrees, and those overnight low temperatures have been down to about 100. so it's been just unbearable there. and then we've started to see some of that heat moving into southern california, yesterday death valley broke a record of a daily high temperature of 128 degrees. now, the hottest temperature that we have of reliable record says it got up to 134 degrees in 1913. so it was pretty close to that. we're dealing with heat here at home. in brentwood it's still going to be in the triple digits and we come down to the mid-90s and back up by the end of the week. it's going to be hot for the start of the weekend, looking at temperatures mainly across the inland areas in the upper 90s. we have a couple of days of a break with temperatures in the mid-80s tomorrow and wednesday, and then it's going to be a hot start to the weekend with some

pretty warm temperatures over saturday and sunday as well. for san francisco, this is where we're keeping the milder weather due to the low clouds, the fog, and we'll stay in the 60s throughout much of the week. let's get a look at the morning commute with a look at what's happening for mass transit. just a heads up that caltrain is reporting that for train 104 southbound there's about a ten-minute delay and then for vta they're running bus bridges on the green, blue and orange lines. so check the vta website before you head out and make your way to work this morning. no delays elsewhere. looking at the richmond-san rafael bridge, it is good on the approach. we've started to see some slowdowns there. also starting to slow down just a bit on the bay bridge, but it's about the time we start to see more cars. and it takes you about 16 minutes to get across the bay bridge. for the other bridges, so far everything is flowing pretty well and at speed.

6:25 right now. nbc bay area responds to a south bay woman who had about 100 bucks hinging on a cabinet purchase. >> she called chris chmura's team to open some doors. >> good morning. cynthia in santa clara decided to return the bathroom cabinet she bought from amazon. she requested the turn over the phone and says the rep promised her she would get her money back on her credit card, a refund. instead, amazon issued store credit, which cynthia didn't realize until she made another purchase that ate up some of, but not all of that credit. in the end, $99.78 left over

a really bad air quality for us just yet. it may be elevated above the surface. then we're seeing temperatures that are starting out in the upper 60s, headed for the mid-80s as we go into the afternoon. once again not talking about 90s, but i am concerned about smoke, especially for the north bay. we are going to see more coming in due to a wildfire in oregon that's being pushed down into the north bay, but also drifting into parts of the south bay and east bay for this afternoon. and you're also limiting your time outside due to the heat and some of our interior valleys, even though it's about 10 degrees lower compared to yesterday. we're still hitting about 94 in monday cord, 86 in fremont, and looking at upper 80s in novato today. we'll get a look at the cooldown temporarily in the forecast in just a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. developing this morning, an 8-year-old boy is recovering after the latest freeway shooting in oakland. for some, this is adding a new

layer to a growing recall conversation. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez joins us from our newsroom with new response from the woman at the center of that debate, alameda county district attorney pamela price. what is the d.a. saying, kris? >> over the weekend a boy was shot in the car on the freeway. he remains in grave condition. he was caught in crossfire and is now at ucsf benioff childrens' hospital. chp shut down the freeway to investigate for about six hours. district attorney pamela price is facing criticism for her prosecution in prior freeway shootings, including that of this guy, jasper wu, the toddler that was killed by a stray bullet. pamela price was criticized for not pursuing life without

parole, but price told nbc bay area her prosecution is dependent on the proof is chp can provide in order to win the case. >> we know that when we get an opportunity to hold someone accountable for that, we are doing that, we're doing it in the jasper wu case, we're going it in the case out of union city. we are doing that. freeway shooting is not okay. shooting anyone in alameda county is not okay. but freeway shootings definitely represent a danger to public safety. and i know that the chp does what they can to try to solve these homicides, and when it happens then we're going to prosecute people. >> as for her time in office and the recall effort against her, price says that since she's taken office, she's hired 80 people, promoted a diverse staff. still, the group safe alameda for everyone is now gathering signatures to recall her from office. price says she is now focused on

the people who voted for her, not on the people who didn't. >> these folks lost and the majority of the people that voted for us to bring criminal justice reforms to alameda county, to protect public safety and to do the things that we're doing. >> the recall effort is still in its early stages, but so, too, is d.a. price's tenure. she's only been in office for six months. >> a lot of controversy surrounding her. thank you very much. 6:34 right now. happening today, jury selection is set to begin in the trial of a former san jose state athletic trainer accused of sexual assault. scott shaw is accused of sexually assaulting student-athletes. federal investigators say it happened during treatments as far back as 2009 and initial complaints came from athletes on the swim team. "the mercury news" reports the accusations are more widespread and may extend to athletes in other sports. shaw pleaded not guilty to six

misdemeanors. if convicted, he can face up to six years in prison. police are hoping surveillance images can help track down four armed robbers. yesterday they posted these pictures, the four men were involved in two robberies at banks in san pablo yesterday. in one case they shot a robbery victim in the leg. the head of teamsters union is requesting the white house not to intervene if u.p.s. workers go on strike. the union represents 340,000 u.p.s. employees. the talks have been at a standstill for more than a week and to avoid a strike a new agreement must be reached by the end of the month. this would be the first u.p.s. labor action since a 15-day walkout paralyzed the company back in 1997. speaking of protests, with

no talks on the horizon, the two-pronged strike shutting down hollywood appears to be at a standstill right now. actors as well have joined the writers on the picket line. this is as the union argues that streamers and studios are pivoting away from paying the same residuals to talent. one insider at "deadline hollywood" says that hollywood is nothing like it was the last time both of those unions went on strike at the same time. >> the last time the writers and actors were on strike together in 1960, when, by the way, ronald reagan was the president of the actors union and dwight eisenhower was in the white house, that went on for a long time. it's a different world now, we're looking at competing interests and the long-term game. the industry is evolving at a rapid pace and the studios to hold onto their power, their market share, they're determined to not let every contract cycle turn into a strike.

>> later on "today" we go inside the standstill at the negotiation table, that's coming up at 7:00 this morning right after us here in "today in the bay." housing advocates in oakland are worried about a surge in evictions with covid-era protections running out. the end came yesterday for oakland's eviction moratorium. the ban lasted more than three years starting in march of 2020. this means landlords will be allowed to take tenants to court over unpaid rent during that time. housing advocates also fear it may lead to a spike in homelessness. firefighters in southern california are stretched thin fighting four separate fires in riverside county. the largest called the rabbit fire has burned close to 8,000 acres since friday. this is near mystic lake. perhaps good news, firefighters yesterday stopped the progress and containment last night grew to 25%. in yosemite, firefighters, they are now fighting an out of

control fire burning near north dome not far from the world famous half dome. as of last night, that fire has burned 650 acres. rangers say the lightning strike started more than about two weeks ago and conditions are making the fight a little more challenging, and smoke in that area is also impacting air quality. makes it hard to see when it's so smoky and they're trying to fight the fire and can't see where to fly to try to put out the flames, as well as the terrain. we've had other issues with fires, some of the smoke coming down from oregon and worsening our air quality, even with the heat we had over the weekend we really saw that in the north bay. now we are seeing temperatures starting out this morning in the upper 50s for san francisco, but you compare that to the 77 we're seeing right now in vacaville, so already a big range in temperatures and it's going to be like that as we go into this

afternoon. martinez, heading out the door to 65 degrees, a mild start. then at 11:00 it's 77 degrees, reaching into the low 80s early in the afternoon. a little warmer there compared to what we're seeing for the peninsula, as well as near the coastline. so we're going to reach 78 degrees in the peninsula while the tri-valley heads for 93 degrees, upper 60s for san francisco, and the east bay reaching 76 degrees while the north bay gets more drifts of smoke today and temperatures reaching into the mid-80s. let's get you ready for the morning commute as we get a look at what's happening at the bay bridge toll plaza. it is all backed up. the metering lights came on at about 5:40 and now we are seeing more people out there trying to head across the bay bridge. we're not seeing any issues there, it does look like it's a much easier drive if you were to take the san mateo bridge, it is all green looking at those sensors, just a little slow on the approach. then elsewhere across the bay

in those outdoor activities before it gets dangerous to be out there during the middle of the day. we're still looking at hot temperatures here, but we do have a slight cooldown. i'll have more on that in a few minutes. as you get ready to head out on the roads, we're seeing a slight slowdown as you head across the bay bridge. the drive time takes you about 14 minutes. the san mateo bridge is looking like a better option as we haven't seen a backup. i'm watching all of that for you. another look at weather in traffic in a few minutes. a southern california man is recovering after a freak accident involving a firework. so security video shows that gardener on the job in torrence picking up something he says looked like a ball. that was a firework that had not exploded. neighbors applied a tourniquet but he blast fingers in the blast and his vision is still affected. >> whoever let off the firework

needs to have some responsibility. you see an injury like that and you don't want to ever touch another firework as long as you live, ever again. >> because the victim is still unable to work, his family has set up a fundraiser that has raised $30,000. an urgent call from one south bay animal shelter which says it will have to euthanize some animals if they're not adopted by 6:00 p.m. tonight. the san martin animal shelter is at full capacity and making a new plea for adoptions one week after the humane society offered adoptions for cats for $20. the facility opens at noon. if you can find a place in your heart and home, take one of those loveable animals home. steph curry has everyone asking, what's better, sinking a buzzer-beating game winner or an eagle to win a very popular golf tournament? >> it's not a chance!

>> in comparison to here, not bad. >> it was hot in the valleys and it's starting to come down just a little bit. we're seeing a little more spoke coming in, but yesterday evening after that heat we saw showers and thunderstorms firing up further to the north. we were monitoring for the potential of what we call dry lightning where you have thunderstorms but a lot of the rain evaporates before hitting the ground. there was a lot of action around parts of lake and mendocino counties, parts of northern sonoma county. we're still monitoring to see if any of that lightning hit some brush and the smoldering. sometimes it takes a while before we start to see flames ig igniting and getting going. there's a really big fire in oregon that's been pushing smoke into parts of the north bay. that means worsening air quality, as well as in parts of the north bay. it may be a little worse than yesterday, especially around clear lake and then eventually

heading into napa. parts of the east bay may have worsening air quality later on as a result of some of those oregon wildfires. and then temperatures for today will be about 8, 10 degrees lower than yesterday afternoon. but it's still pretty hot with livermore reaching 93 degrees, 92 in los gatos and hayward headed for 80 degrees, upper 80s in much of the north bay. then tomorrow it comes down even more, so we get back our natural air-conditioning. hopefully that improves the air quality. winds coming out of the west and our temperatures near the coast are going to be in the low to mid-60s, valleys will reach into the mid-80s for afternoon highs. that will be our break, because as we head toward thursday it will be heating up again. make sure you're staying hydrated. if you have to work outside, stay in the shade as much as possible and don't forget the sunscreen. wear lightweight clothing and a hat to make it feel cooler,

keeping the sun off of your head. don't take your pets out walking during the hottest hours of the day. never leave them in vehicles and make sure you supply them with a lot of clean, fresh water. our temperatures will be heating up for the next several days, especially by the end of the week, as high pressure that's been breaking records across parts of arizona, nevada, comes back into the bay area with some of that heat. so take a look at concord, we're going to be in the mid-90s by the end of the week, upper 90s by friday, and down just slightly for the weekend. we're putting that in our weekend plans and it's going to be hot after seeing a couple of days of just modest breaks from the heat with mid-80s, and then we're back to the mid-90s and upper 90s for friday. for san francisco, we're still looking at some mild weather here, 60s and 70s, friday will be the warmest day with a high of 72, with a little more sunshine. but the clouds and the fog, the marine layer is going to keep it

nice and comfortable along the coastline. and let's get you out there on the roads this morning with a look at the morning commute through oakland. 880 is looking like the usual build. we haven't seen any major issues. it may be slow to the approach as you head closer to the san mateo bridge, and also coming through the south bay we started to see some of those sensors backing up as you approach the interchange from 288, 880 and 680. the bay bridge, it's been slow over the past couple of hours, so we are looking at a little bit of a slowdown, but not seeing any major crashes. that's good news. the drive through the south bay takes you about 26 minutes and it looks good as well. but the bridge drive time starts to slow down for the bay bridge now at 15 minutes to get across. and the san mateo bridge as well as the other bridges are looking good. contra costa county, it's taking 40 minutes to get from pittsburg to walnut creek. it's also very slow as you head from pittsburg to walnut creek,

welcome back. we are moving you forward with a look at the top stories on "today in the bay," including new concerns about lightning strikes following the weekend of extreme heat. >> take a look at this video from the santa rosa fire department showing lightning in the north bay yesterday. the concerns that all of this could spark new wildfires. firefighters are asking everyone to keep an eye out for smoke or flames. the hot weather in some cases led to power outages. this is the map from earlier this morning. in some cases crews are working to restore power. at this point none of the

outages are considered large scale. even the national weather service was feeling the heat, at one point tweeting the radar was down due to an air-conditioning issue near san jose. teams were forced to monitor weather through offshore satellites and using nearby radar data. emeryville police are hoping surveillance images can help track down four violent armed robbers. the four men were allegedly involved in two armed robberies in san pablo yesterday. in one case they allegedly shot a victim in the leg. yesterday emeryville police posting this photo of one of the suspects and the alleged getaway car, a hyundai sedan. if you know anything about this, you're asked to contact emeryville police. jury selection is set to start in the trial of a former san jose state athletic trainer accused of sexual assault, scott shaw is accused of sexually assaulting student-athletes as far back as 2009. federal investigators say

initial complaints came from athletes on the swim team, but "the mercury news" reports the accusations are more widespread and may extend to athletes in other sports. shaw pleaded not guilty to six miss demeanors last year and could face up to six years in prison. horse racing fans learning golden gate fields will close in a matter of weeks. the track operators yesterday announced plans to close for the last time at the end of the current season and focus on the southern california operations. that means no more horse racing after october 2nd. golden gate fields opened back in 1941. the bay area's other long-time racetrack, bay meadows, closed 15 years ago after opening in 1934. a new infamous santa cruz sea otter getting a lot of attention for some unusual high jinx, mainly for occupying empty surfboards. here's new video posted to
