case and not guilty. >> reporter: our colleague is inside that courtroom here as we speak, we're waiting for him to leave that courthouse and communicate to us what he heard from judge cannon as well as the prosecution and the defense team for donald trump. this is particularly around the classified documents charges that donald trump faces. the question coming out of this hearing is when the judge will set this trial date to begin. right now the prosecution, the government wants it to begin in december. saying that a speedy trial is the way forward. at the same time, the defense for donald trump is urging the judge to wait for this trial to begin until after the 2024 presidential election. suggesting that the proceedings shouldn't get in the way of his own political effort to ascend back to the white house. >> the letter he's the target of

another investigation. is the justice department saying anything. >> reporter: donald trump himself revealing this morning that on sunday night he received a letter from the special counsel's office telling him that he's a target of their investigation into the efforts leading up to the january 6th attack and the efforts to overturn the 2020 election, donald trump in numerous posts here over the course of the last six hours continued to propagate not only his 2020 election conspiracies but in large part also justifying his own actions on that day of the january 6th attack. he's suggested that jack smith the special counsel is out to undermine him for political reasons but also importantly in that letter he suggest thatd he was given a four-day window to go before this grand jury in washington, d.c. the question is, would he go and testify to the grand juror allow the

special counsel and grand jury whether or not to charge him? >> vaughn, thank you so much. laura, some legal analysis. for those wondering why we're talk about this today, why would the special counsel send a letter to the former president in. >> i think you should think about it as a way to wrap up loose ends. especially in a situation like this, which is unprecedented. we're talk about the former president of the united states being informed that he's implicated in a crime, not telling him what the charges are or the full scope of things, but he knows he's been investigated for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, his efforts to stay in power. it's a big deal to be informed that he's the target of that investigation. i should mention we haven't been able to confirm that anyone else has been informed they're the target of the investigation. as for the timing of the delay

august, that first primary debate. it's still evident and how much we're on the campaign trail as we speak. donald trump is on the campaign trail. his rivals are on the campaign trail. cautious shift beginning to happen among his political rivals starting to poke at him. unnecessary drama that voters may not want. he's seen virtually erosion in support for the republican primary electorate. they still like him. they largely agree with his allegation that the department of justice and federal law enforcement have been weaponized. that said what happened in a general could be very different than where voters are in a primary, right -- because donald trump has to get through the primary to get to head to head matchup with joe biden who's running for re-election. legal issues might come back to haunt the former president.

this sounds incredibly unusual. what else do we know in. >> reporter: yeah, i mean, saying it's unusual is an understatement. it has a potential for being extremely dangerous for the individual. the u.s. military is still not identifying him because they're notifying his family to let them know what happened. he's in custody of korean people's army. north korean military. he was in a disciplinary problem recently in south korea, he violated the agreement between the u.s. and the korean military that dictates how each side operates and how the u.s. military can live and work there. because of that violation the u.s. military was putting him on a civilian aircraft at the civilian airport and sending him back to u.s., somehow he slipped away from airport and got in this commercial tour group, at some point while they were along the border he ran across the

border. what the u.s. government is saying is a willful move to run across the border. we know more from the white house briefing that the u.s. and the north korean governments have been in touch about this. we don't know exactly what that looks like, who's talking on each side. we just heard just recently from the pentagon, secretary of defense austin said he's very concerned about troops overseas. >> i'm absolutely foremost concerned about the welfare of our troops. so we'll remain focused on this and again, this will develop in the next several days and hours. >> reporter: still potentially very tense situation we don't know the status of this soldier at this point. >> we do know the u.s. is working to resolve it soon. tesla is settling claims from shareholds are. first generation iphone is putting up big numbers. >> should have held to mine.

we have an update about a story we've been following for the last six months, law enforcement officials in oregon believe the death of four women earlier this year are indeed linked. steven romo has been following this one. what more are we learning about the investigation zbrr six women were discovered dead between february and may of this year. around portland. that sparked fears about a serial killer, a term law enforcement officials had not used. they said these deaths weren't connected now they're saying at least four of may be linked. a look at the time line of this.

22-year-old kristin smith was found dead in february. charity perry was found dead in april. bridget webster was found just over a week another victim ashley real was found dead on may 7th. another case an unidentified woman, foul play wasn't suspected in that case but another case, 32-year-old joanna speaks she was also found dead. her family is holding out hope for answers saying in statement yesterday, quote, we're in direct communication with our detective to verify why our sister's name hasn't linked to the person of interest as of this morning. we're extremely thankful that we're one step closer to getting answers for these families. >> kate. >> steven, what do we know about the person of interest in. >> we just heard back for the d.a.'s office no charges have

been filed against anyone in these deaths. they have an identified person of interest connected to these four cases. they haven't released much information about that person, though, they do however say they don't believe there's any active danger to the community right now. kate. >> steven, thank you. today we're also learning market the evidence that led to the i rest of suspected serial killer on new york's long island. >> investigators went to south carolina, the suspect rex heuermann remains in custody today. stephanie gosk is following this one. walk us through the latest evidence. >> have you seen a chevrolet avalanche, it's a very odd-looking vehicle, it's like half pickup truck, half suv. very identifiable and it could be the key that brought rex heuermann down in this case.

amber costello one of the victims was seen getting into one of those early versions of that kind of vehicle. this is what the district attorney told me about that witness and how they put the pieces together to identify rex heuermann as a suspect. listen. >> once we realized that rex heuermann owned a chevrolet avalanche, the truck being driven by the last individual to see the last victim amber costello alive, that was sort of a key piece of evidence because not only did he have that chevy avalanche he also matched the unique physical description of the individual. >> so they picked up that vehicle down in south carolina. at a property we're told that belongs to a family member of his. he also had another later version of that car at his home in long island that was seized by police. >> the details are fascinating. authorities said they had him on

for tomorrow night. we'll begin this half-hour with the unrelenting heat wave bearing down on a huge part of country. it's hot out there. at he hour, more than 60 million people from florida to california all under heat alerts. triple-didn't temperatures expected in texas, arizona, new mexico, but this heat is not just uncomfortable it can be dangerous, too, this hiker in utah had to be air lifted to safety after collapsing from heat exhaustion. guad is with us in fort lauderdale, florida, no secret florida has been dealing with record-shattering heat for days. miami is going to hit 105 today, i think, and i know the state is sounding the alarm about the dangers. what do people need to know. >> reporter: kate, that's right. we talked about the dangers of the heat and in fact the state today sent out information

urging florida residents and visitors to keep in mind that there are dangers for this heat and humidity. i think two things we have to keep in mind is what can happen because of the heat. think about the symptoms that can be recognized as a result of the heat when someone for example has heat exhaustion, dizziness, thirst, symptoms that have to be recognized by someone who has been in sun all day and didn't drink water. heat stroke, confusion, hot and dry skin with no sweat, that rapid strong pulse and loss of consciousness, you know, we were just talking to a worker nearby who said he's been here for 40 years. in 40 years he hasn't felt heat like this. he's had seen more paramedics for different incidents related to the heat.

ikeda is following this story for us. it's a hard story to cover. there's anup date from local officials on the search. what's the latest. >> reporter: a bit of a somber tone in the latest press conference. today was the firmest acknowledge from authorities this is a recovery mission, they say they are still looking for the two, quote, missing angels, they've searched the entire flood zone more than a dozen times, it stretches 1.5 miles long, they used a host of different resource prs sonar technology, to drones, to people on foot f they don't find the two young children, 2-year-old maddie and 9-of month-old conrad, they'll be winding down a large portion of their search and focus on the underwater search mission, focusing on the creek areas in coming days ahead.

what happened to carlee russell over that 48-hour period. her parents sat down with priscilla thompson, they described what it was like the emotion the joy, the relief the gratitude when they heard sounds from outside and carlee was walking back toward her house. her mom said it was very brief because she was, quote, not in a good state. carlee had to be taken to an local hospital for evaluation, police also interviewed her at that point and she was later released. police so far only interviewed carlee one time. they've not provided any details on who they're looking for. her parents said there's no doubt that there was an abduction and that she was fighting for her life. police aren't raising alarm belles. something doesn't line up here as they spoke with priscilla

dr. john torres joins us now with the latest. dr. john, this is encouraging news as we get ready to head into the fall season. how does this drug actually work, who can get it in. >> this is great news because up until now we had one medicine that could be used for high-risk infants. this one instead is going to be a shot that works for infants when they're newborn or before their first rsv season. the thing to remember, too, this is not a vaccine, it doesn't activate the immune system to fight off rsv, what we call passive immunity,, in otheher ws what i it doess it gives them t antibodies they need to fight off rsv and that's going happen here hopefully this coming fall, get this injection and it will last throughout the season. and save some children. >> dr. john, it lasts thought
