breaking news and within the last hour an amber alert called off in the north bay, with word of an arrest. the chp issuing that alert around 2:00 this morning for solano and sacramento counties. within the last two hours it was canceled. chp saying that this man has been arrested, damian castaneda and he's accused of abducting his three young children in vallejo. we know the children were found safe. the father was accused of taking them without permission at about 7:30 last night. it's not clear what charges he'll face. our bob redell is following the story and we'll have a live report coming up in the next half hour. >> good to start with good news that the children were found safe. let's switch gears and get a check on our forecast. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what is in store for today. good morning. >> good morning. and it feels a little more humid out there. we've had a surge of monsoonal

moisture and still lingering thunderstorms over parts of the sierra and heading off to the east. it still feels a little muggy outside as we get started in santa rosa, where it's 54 degrees, it's cloudy, we may have patches of fog, and it's going to be a cool start to the day. as we go into late morning into the afternoon, the sky will clear and it's going to be another mild day. we're enjoying it because it heats up. i'll have more in a few minutes. mike, you're tracking already a couple of crash. we'll show you the overall approach where the commute typically starts and there's nothing going on for contra costa county, no problems down the eastshore freeway. i take you to the south bay. we have one alert issued by chp, southbound 880 to southbound 280. the transition ramp sounds like it's affected by an early-morning crash. i'll get more details from chp. that will be over here for the one specific transition. over here, not 101 but just off 101, this major surface street, king, there is a closure for a

couple of blocks because of a major crash that's happened. i'm going to hand it right back to you. that is the other breaking news we're following this morning, that tragic late-night accident in the south bay. three people struck by a car and police say, sadly, an infant has died. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is live for us at the scene. she's in east san jose. and, kris, it's just sad. two of those victims children? >> reporter: yeah, so as you mentioned, that baby was killed by that car, but we know that another juvenile -- so either a child or teenager was also hit along with an adult. those two people are now in the hospital. we expect that they will survive. the baby, the juvenile and the adult were crossing the street on king road near ocala avenue in east san jose about 11:40 last night. police tell us the baby died here at the scene, the juvenile and the adult were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, so their lives will never be the same. police tell us the driver

remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. we talked with a neighbor who says she's shocked by the loss of life but not surprised by the crash on the streets she says have gotten more dangerous every year in her 55 years living here. >> people cross these streets every day and cars are always trying to beat the light. everyone is rushing, sometimes there's traffic, especially down this street and everyone always -- they're always rushing, and, like i say, trying to beat the light. then they turn and sometimes they're not even watching if there's people here crossing the streets, and it's bad. it's just really bad. >> reporter: the baby is the 27th person to die in a car crash on san jose city streets. last year in all of last year, 32 pedestrians were killed in traffic fatalities here in san jose. i want to point out that there are some road closures associated with the

last night's chaotic school board meeting. speakers were escorted from the room several times during lengthy public comment t. controversy is playing out in the city of temecula. it's around a three-paragraph mention of harvey milk and text materials for grade school students. >> you guys are trying to exclude curriculum based on an organization that deals with communism. you are well within your authority to exclude this curriculum. >> you want your world view to be the defined world view of our community. we are a diverse community full of every walk of life, nationality and sexuality in this city. for you to believe in only representing those who voted for you, that's not governing. >> governor newsom recently stepped into the battle. he calls it a case of cancel culture going too far, suggesting radical conservatives are rejecting a text used by

hundreds of thousands of students. state attorney general rob bonta is also requesting background on the district's decision. it is 5:09 on your wednesday morning. taking a peek outside overlooking san jose, awaiting the sun's arrival now. how warm will it get? let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. she's been tracking those temperatures for us. >> for most of us around the bay area we're still taking a break from the extreme heat and we're starting out with our nice, usual cool morning that gives us a chance before those temperatures heat up in the valley. so we're in the upper 50s right now in livermore, we're in the mid-50s in sonoma, and we take a look at mountain view where we're going to see temperatures in the upper 50s in the next couple of hours. and then a mild day for today, with a mostly sunny sky. around the bay area we'll see temperatures in oakland reaching 69, 89 degrees in gilroy. you can see the range in temperatures with brentwood today still hitting 100 degrees. we'll get a look at some hotter temperatures in our forecast in

a few minutes. mike has a look at where we can find lower gas prices. >> livermore are back in the top ten for the state but it's the same price, so everything else is changing. $4.09, diamond gas and mart on south front road. solano county, vallejo, the low is shell on tennessee street at $4.11. and san jose at the bottom, we have $4.19 at express gas and mart on redmond. thank you for reporting through gasbuddy.com. on the roadways, the two big issues are in the south bay. the connecter south 880 to south 280, that connecter ramp may be closed for another couple of hours because of a crash that did impact the structure there of the over-crossing. so we're going to get more details and i'll talk you through the alternate through the area. this is where the deadly crash happened overnight, so part of king road is closed between cunningham and miami. you can use mclaughlin or capital expressway as your

good wednesday morning. it is 5:14. let's get you out the door in martinez. it's starting out cloudy and we're seeing a breezy southwesterly wind. it's 57 degrees. by 9:00 it's about 62 degrees and slow 70s at lunchtime as the sky clears. we're going to have another mild day here, but heating up in the valleys, and we have some high heat in our forecast. i'll talk more about that in a few minutes. we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza, i-80 is just fine right here. there is a crash that might be impacting 80 at 37 where we typically see some of our first slowing on the maps as well. we continue to follow those two crashes. one connecter ramp shut down in san jose, we'll continue to update on that and i'll give you the workaround. good morning. happy wednesday. the british government says this morning inflation has fallen to just under 8%, fallen to 8%.

compare that to our headline inflation of 3%. the uk is still struggling. a san francisco company called tempo is laying off half of its staff, according to papers filed with the sec. it's trading at 32 cents, so low we had to go out an extra decimal place to find the gains. microsoft, meanwhile, hit an all-time high as it announced a new subscription service for artificial intelligence. meta, which has been so focused on the metaverse it changed its name, is jumping on the ai bandwagon offering its own artificial intelligence programming. it will make open source to anyone, that means you can reprogram, readapt to your own needs. now, the upside is we could see some interesting new products. the downside, people worry it could be used by bad guys like spammers to flood your emails, your text messages until those systems are useless. meta says it's put guardrails in

place. there's a new bipartisan effort in the senate to bar some government workers, including members of congress, from buying stocks. they would be able to buy index funds and mutual funds, you have no control over those. a recent survey by the university of maryland says 80% of americans support the idea of barring members of congress from buying stock. the biden administration, meanwhile, new rules and guidelines for companies that want to buy other companies. they'll tell the ftc when to move to stop a merger. it doesn't mean the ftc is going to be successful in court in their attempts to stop companies from merging. in fact, the ftc has a lousy track record. but setting the new rules gets companies thinking about buying a rival a heads-up they'll likely be sued by the government. and google is experimenting with a new program cutting employees off from the internet, except for things like email and calendar. it's not punishment, it's a way of securing systems from cyberattacks. if the employee isn't connected, he or she cannot be hacked.

>> good luck. we're looking pretty good here in the weather department, and maybe soon we'll all be catching a jet and heading somewhere. we'll see. we're waiting on those lottery numbers. it's a nice start this morning as low clouds and fog lingers over san francisco to start out our morning. that's been keeping those temperatures down. we're starting out with some mid-50s and headed for the low 60s for this afternoon. we've also had to deal with some unhealthy air quality with near surface smoke coming in from a wildfire that's still burning quite a bit in parts of oregon, southwestern oregon and that smoke is coming into the north bay. we saw that layer of haze and smoke yesterday afternoon, so that will continue for today as well, unfortunately. so we're going to see temperatures a little bit cooler, reaching into the low 80s, 83 in san jose while lows gats will hit a high of 86 degrees, and morgan hill will reach 90 degrees today. there's a wide range of

temperatures. we're at 86 in martinez and 90 in antioch today. pleasanton hitting 88 degrees. and as you can see on the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, we'll be on a warming trend after today. so enjoy the 75 in san mateo. in half moon bay some upper 50s and the outer sunset at 58 degrees, and for the north bay ranging from 69 in mill valley to 97 in ukiah. and then we compare that to what they're feeling elsewhere across the country and there's been this really big heat dome everyone is talking about, especially for phoenix, hitting 117 degrees for today. that heat expands, also, across parts of the west. we're going to start so see temperatures ramping up in napa, peaking on friday and saturday, with upper 90s. so our seven-day forecast shows that heating trend that we'll be under for the next several days after a mild day today. it's going to reach into the upper 90s on saturday, but it's going to be nice this weekend in san francisco. mike, you still have that

alert for san jose commuters? >> we do. we may have one of these alerts for three or four more hours from what chp says. this is the transition between two freeways and it's not necessarily a big commute spot yet. it may be a bigger factor because of complications on major surface streets. south 880 getting onto 280, the transition, the ramp has been impacted by a crash and so i think they at least have to have an investigation done on the structure itself. so right now it's closed. so get off stevens creek and over to winchester will send you through a congested area later on in the morning. right now very calm. as folks travel past santana row, you're going to have to get back on. that's one alternate to get through the area. later on in the morning with more congestion, we'll track the progress. over here the progress out of the altamont is steady and relatively slow until you pass by north flynn and then everything clears up. vasco road not a major issue. this is a wednesday, we're looking at a bigger volume of

drama that ended in the best possible way with those children found safe. also breaking right now, a deadly double shooting overnight in the east bay. new information just confirmed by police. this is "today in the bay." a lot of news overnight while you were sleeping. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. want to get you started with a look at that forecast this morning. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect today. how is it looking for us? >> it's wednesday, we usually call it hump day, but we're actually at the bottom of our temperatures. and we're going to be rising over the next couple of days as we lead into the end of the week. let's get you ready for the day in san rafael, looking across the north bay with our start at about 55 degrees. it is mostly cloudy. and as we go into late morning into the afternoon, we see that marine layer lifting up and clearing out, and we are in for sunshine.

but take a look at these highs. reaching into the low 80s for santa rosa, some mid-80s for the tri-valley and upper 80s for morgan hill and san martin, while san jose will be in the upper 70s. the peninsula will be in the 70s and low 70s for san mateo. a wide range of temperatures. we're going to be heating up in the valleys in the next couple of days. mike, now you're tracking an oil spill? >> it's from the crash i've been telling you about westbound 80 coming down to highway 37. the oil spill is in the middle lane, so one of the vehicles is leaking some sort of fluid. they're going to have to clean that up once the proper crew gets there. we may have one lane blocked until that clears. that will hold folks up from the carquinez bridge. over on the right side we have the slowing for highway 4 westbound into concord out of pittsburg and bay point and we have a pretty standard build for the rest of the bay. the better news is that the crash seen at ocala and king has

been cleared. both of those roadways have been cleared from that deadly crash that happened overnight. back to you. we are following that deadly crash overnight, and also this. this breaking news in the north bay, three young boys are safe after the chp issued an overnight amber alert. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell is live for us at chp office in vallejo. so, bob, talk to us about what happened here. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, marcus and laura. law enforcement says it was the father who abducted his three young sons around 7:45 last night here in vallejo. they issued an amber alert around 2:45 this morning and then a short time later, around 4:00 this morning, the father was taken into custody and, as you mentioned, the boys are safe. there's no details on how they were found. it's not clear if that amber alert played a role in finding the father and the boys. chp says the father, as you can see on his screen, his name is

damian castaneda. his boys are 4, 5 and 7 years old. the amber alert is canceled, the father is in custody and the boys are safe. reporting live in vallejo, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> glad to know the boys are safe. thank you. also breaking overnight, police are investigating a deadly double shooting in east oakland. this happened on 89th avenue near d street. police are confirming both victims who were shot later died, but they are not saying what led up to the gunfire or if they're still looking for a possible suspect or suspects. in the meantime, the chp is investigating what appears to be a second shooting on the oakland freeway in five days. the victim showed up at a hospital without calling 911 but later told authorities it happened yesterday afternoon on interstate 980 in oakland near 18th street. we drove that corridor last night after investigators had left. the shooting victim suffered

non-life-threatening injuries. this is oakland's second freeway shooting investigation in less than a week. an 8-year-old boy is still in critical condition after being struck by a stray bullet last friday on interstate 580. investigators say he was caught in the middle of a gun battle involving people in two other cars. police are still looking for those shooters. a cyclist is dead in the south bay from a freak accident. this happened yesterday afternoon in gilroy on roop road. chp is saying that a large falling tree branch landed on top of that cyclist, killing her. her identity has not yet been released. san francisco transit leaders are urging the state to tap the brakes on plans to expand the number of robotic taxis operating in the city. four companies now have permits to operate in certain locations. four additional companies have permits to test driverless

vehicles. regulators recently postponed the vote to expand the services. at last night's meeting mta directors urged the state to collect more data before allowing expansion of current fleets, questioning the safety of their automated technology. the mta reports more than 90 complaints from driverless cars in san francisco over the most recent two-month period between march and april. laura, get ready for mayor taylor swift. yeah, she's coming to town after santa clara leaders approved a proclamation to name the international star honorary mayor and temporarily change the city's name to swiftie clara. so the idea is to honor her for the sheer volume of visitors she's attracting to two sold-out shows at levi's. her tour arrives july 28th for two sold-out shows and hotels are booked solid. the owner of santa clara's

bridge toll plaza. no problems right now but the volume is definitely building up as folks are coming toward the toll plaza. we should see the metering lights turning on. i do see folks slowing as we saw at the edge of the screen. we see a build for highway 37 and highway 4, but what may impact highway 37 more is the oil spill after a crash approaching the area right there in the transition. i think things might be moving a little better over the next few. this evening we're predicting traffic around the coliseum, a midday game. the midday game means folks can go around 11:00, have a nice time around the noon hour and after the game that will mesh in with the after-work traffic. that's a big note as you travel by the coliseum. there's the overnight road work going on on east 14th or state route 185 through san leandro. so another note for your look ahead. in the south bay, one crash is cleared from king and ocala, but we have the transition for 880 at 280 still blocked. i'll talk about that more coming

look back. i do not want to see him -- i hope he doesn't get charged, i don't think it will be good for the country. but at the same time i've got to focus on looking forward and that's what we're going to do. >> desantis went on to say if he were nominated the republicans could concentrate on beating biden instead of trump's legal trouble. donald trump's lawyers were in a florida courtroom yesterday for a hearing about the documents case, one of two criminal cases trump is fighting. though that number may jump to four criminal cases very soon. the big question before the judge, when do they hold the trial on those federal felonies? trump's lawyers argued he's busy running for president, but that's not a legal reason not to have a trial. they do pointed out trump will be on trial in new york in october. both sides are concerned about the amount of evidence they have to comb through. we learned yesterday the prosecution has more than 1,000 days of surveillance video from the mar-a-lago cameras. that's three years of video. meantime, the state of

michigan has filed charges against 16 people who claimed they were michigan's official electors in order to award the state's electoral votes to trump, even though biden won michigan. >> that was a lie. they weren't the duly elected and qualified electors and each of the defendants knew it. they carried out these actions with the hope and belief that the electoral votes of michigan's 2020 election would be awarded to the candidate of their choosing instead of the candidate that michigan voters actually chose. >> and the former governor of arizona has confirmed special counsel jack smith's office has been in contact with him as well. president trump pressured republican governor ducey to certify the state's electoral college for him. it was biden that won in arizona. ducey did certify the election for biden. laura? >> thank you very much. 5:46 right now. new this morning, the push to get more young children to read.

so important. one in three will start kindergarten without proper language skills to learn to read. >> the american academy of pediatrics says we could avoid that by riding to our children in their first five years. researchers found 3 to 5-year-olds who are read to at least three times a week are twice as likely to recognize all their letters of the alphabet by sight and they're twice as likely to understand words and context. the nonprofit puts books into the hands of children visiting doctors' offices and it just got a big funding boost. reach out and read received an $8 million investment, the largest in its 34-year history. the ceo is driven to get those books into as many childrens' hands as possible. >> when i put my 5-year-old to bed and we snuggle with a book and we bond and create connection, every child in the united states should have that. >> now, the bay area has dozens

of participating sites which you can locate at reach out and read dot org. trending this morning, celebrating the end to the great legal battle surrounding the taco tuesday trademark. >> so the taco john's chain says that it could no longer sell out money to the trademark for that phrase and the chances are taco bell is celebrating here. the bell filed a petition in may with the u.s. patent and trademark office seeking to cancel that trademark and attorneys argue the term taco tuesday is generic and any restaurant making tacos should be allowed to use it. taco john's apparently crunched the numbers estimating that it could cost as much as $1 million to defend that trademark and it just wasn't worth it. taco bell is not commenting. >> a million dollars worth of tacos. >> lebron was in that commercial trying to free the hashtag.

maybe that helped. >> he did it. >> any time is a time for a taco in my book. >> wind back to tuesday so we can eat tacos today. we're going to have some great weather for lunch outside and enjoying your tacos under the sun. we're going to see a wide range in temperatures, but we've also had a surge in humidity, and yesterday that monsoon moisture caused thunderstorms to fire up to our south and east, especially over the higher elevations over parts of the southern sierra. so we're going to possibly see that again today. but all of those lightning strikes have been causing some wildfires, especially farther to the north as we take a look at where some near surface smoke is coming from in southwestern oregon. there is a flat fire, a really big fire that's been pushing smoke down into the bay area and we're going to most likely see that again today as the models show it moving into parts of mendocino county and spreading across much of the rest of the bay area with slightly unhealthy

air quality. and then our temperatures are feeling nicer, so maybe more people are trying to head outside. temperatures in the low 80s for san jose and 90 in morgan hill. there's still a big range in temperatures from oakland in the upper 60s today to 87 in walnut creek and 88 degrees in concord, while the coastal areas will be in the upper 50s, palo alto heads for 79 degrees. this is very much like yesterday where san francisco is looking at mid-60s downtown and the north bay temperatures reaching 82 in napa and 97 in ukiah. there's been this extreme large area of really hot temperatures, record highs with phoenix today, heading back to 117 degrees. that heat dome that's caused all of these record temperatures will start to nudge its way back toward the bay area just a bit and cause our temperatures to go up. so walnut creek going from mid-80s to upper 90s for friday and saturday and then back down for early next week. we're looking at a spike in

temperatures as we head toward the end of the week. the highest temperatures will be in time for the weekend, and then early next week we're coming back to some more seasonable weather, but we won't see the spike in temperatures in san francisco all thanks to that marine layer and coastal fog. mike, you were seeing something on one of our cameras? >> our traffic camera had been showing 880 and 280 and there's the alert that continues in san jose. southbound 880 to 280, the transition route, these flashing lights appeared over the last few minutes through the trees. i believe that's activity related to the inspection that has to go on for the structural integrity. there's a crash that may have impacted part of that structure and that's why we continue with this closure that keeps this transition right here blocked. that is your drive, south 880 to south 280, that is still blocked for the time being. your alternate right now, traffic is still manageable getting off at stevens creek boulevard down to winchester and looping back around. you can circle past valley fair
