around him. for donald trump, a key part of this is that political one, because while he's suggested in the past he could potentially seek to pardon january 6th defendants, there's chance here if and in fact they charged him he would be a defendant himself. >> mr. trump won't appear before that grand jury, so who might appear and what's next in that process? >> well, i think the fact that trump actually received that letter is an important phase in the investigation, when a target letter is sent it signifys that the investigators believe they have substantial evidence tying the recipient to that crime which means an investigation could mean near to completion

because they have that evidence. again, trump not testifying is not surprising, you know, many targets don't testify at all. but if the aide can provide credible firsthand accounts that will implicate trump and potentially any other individuals that are targets in any unlawful activities, it could significantly strengthen the case and really mean that an indictment is near. they've spoken to key figures, pence, giuliani and several others, typically when a person receives a target letter is an indictment is close and near. >> thank you both so much. we're also tracking several developing weather stories this hour incheweding a tornado touching down in north carolina. >> more than 75 million people are under heat alerts from california to florida. heat dome causing the brutal temperatures. >> at the same time, crews in the southeast assessing the damage after severe storms rolled through the region
