forecast. we have some peaks at the commute in a moment. but here we are. friday eve and it is time to get out the door. no temperatures will be hotter and parts of the bay area today. we started with some low 50s, it is mostly cloudy. but as we go throughout the morning, it will clear out quickly. a look at that temperature early in the afternoon. we are already in the upper 80s. a look around the bay area, our high temperatures in south bay reaching 84 degrees. we will see parts of the peninsula reaching into the upper 70s. and for the tri-valley, 99 degrees. we will see some of our interior areas really heating up today with the north bay reaching 93 degrees. but check out san francisco, where the temperatures will be in the upper 60s to low 80s. we will get a look at the weekend forecast coming up in just a few minutes. for the second straight morning, san jose police are investigating a deadly overnight traffic accident. this time, a crash involving two cars. if all is yesterday's accident

that killed an infant. chris is live with more information. chris, what are investigators telling you? >> reporter: there nothing much now, but the investigation is entering its fifth hour. what we know at this point is that two people were ejected from the vehicle and at least one of them did not survive. it happened just after 1:00 this morning here on capitol expressway and snell avenue. victims were found on the ground. an suv crashed into an electric box. another car nearby, lots of debris all over the roadway. san jose police have not told us how they think this crash happened. it happened just 26 hours after this deadly crash in east san jose, in which a baby was killed. a child and a woman were injured while crossing havana avenue at king road outside a crosswalk. police say the driver remained at the scene and it have the

right of way. he did not see the three in the roadway. the person who died was the 28th victim of a traffic crash for that person died today. in all of last year, 65 people died in traffic crashes in the city of san jose in the streets. 32 of them were pedestrians. i want to show you. in a third of all cases, speed was a factor. in two thirds of cases, people died on dark city streets. strike these cities zero vision program to reduce crashes has identified capitol expressway where we are as a corridor of concern this morning. there are safety improvements that have happened, but the department of transportation to people really need to slow down, put phones down, pay attention, and that could avoid a lot of serious crashes. i do want to tell you that the tow truck is here taking away one of the vehicles. the other tow truck is also there. hopefully, this roadway will be reopening soon. i don't mike has been tracking the details. the details here are really big because it is a really

area news app to get updated all the stories you need to know. to develop its for you this morning from embattled telephonic school district. gavin newsom taking heat with conservative board members up a notch. he is now issuing a $1.5 million fine against the to macula school district for rejecting materials mentioning bay area gay right icon harvey milk. speakers were escorted from the room several times on tuesday. it surrounds the state endorsed three paragraph biography of harvey milk and text materials for gradeschool students. on top of the fine, the district will have to pay $1.6 million in shipping costs tied to the rejected materials. newsom says district leaders are violating state law. so far, the conservative board members leading the charge are not commenting. at 6:06, a mystery unfolding overseas as a u.s.

soldier crossed into north korea through the demilitarized zone this week. it has many wondering about his state of mind and why he ran across that border. private travis king is now being held in north korean custody. today, brie jackson is live in washington. thank you for joining us this morning. we are learning that king had already been facing legal troubles when he ran. >> reporter: good morning. that is right. ready for this incident, travis king had spent time in a south korean prison. u.s. officials were preparing to bring him back to the state, where he possibly faced further disciplinary action by the military. >> reporter: we are learning new details about travis king, the u.s. army private scene making a dangerous dash across south korea's order with north korea while joining a tour group. >> everybody was shunned -- stunned and shocked. when the south korean soldiers relaced were happening, they chase after him.

>> reporter: king, who wesley said is in the black shirt, had a few run ins with police while serving in south korea. last september, he was accused of punching a man at a nightclub . that victim did not press charges. in a separate incident, police arrested him for assault. american officials told the associated press that king had just been released after nearly two months in a south korean prison. the biden administration is now trying to determine the 23-year- old's fate. >> we're still gathering facts. i want to be clear that the administration has and will continue to ensure his safety to return him home to his family. >> reporter: the u.s. does not have official relations with north korea. >> we are willing to engage with them at the diplomatic table. they may not accept it, but it is not for lack of trying on our side. >> reporter: king's family in

values are the difference between a locations daily average outdoor temperature and 65 degrees, and engineering standard that is considered the ideal indoor temperature. this graft -- graph shows the number of cdd days over the course of a calendar year. it has risen to now about 750 cdd's. think about this. more than half of the homes in san jose were built in the 1970s and 80s, when temperatures were much cooler. that expands why a lot of us do not have central air conditioning. the observed rise in cooling demand since 1970 is a trend that is likely to continue as the planet warms and the u.s. rejects changes in cooling degree days. it is expected to drive a 71% increase to how the cooling demand might change by 2050. equity to the u.s. energy and energy administration's latest outlook, commercial buildings are projected to see a 30% increase in cooling demand over the same period. these large future projections

are likely underestimates because they are based on air temperature, and therefore do not account for additional cooling demand due to humidity. in the rise in demand for cooling is not limited to the u.s. globally, cooling demand is expected to more than troubled by 2050. consuming as much electricity as all of china and india today, as countries around the world heat up and gain access to air conditioning. we are gearing up for hotter temperatures again for the inland valleys across the bay area. you can get the latest forecast and look at how climate changes affecting us on our website, nbcbayarea.com. look for our climate in crisis page. this is not a climate change issue, but there is flooding reported on the peninsula. look at our cameras in palo alto just north of our views. south at 101 and willow, reports are coming in that

near irrelevance to a major force once again. now, bloomberg is calculated between salary and benefits, satya nadella has taken over $1 billion during his time at microsoft. tesla will spend $1 billion on a super video -- a supercomputer handling the video and audio that it's cars generate. that made investors uneasy. $1 billion is a lot of money. the computer will be called dojo. elon musk said he expects the price of tesla will continue to fall. tesla prices are down as much as 25%, depending on the model. tesla, for instance that used to cost 45,000 is down to 38,000. netflix also briefed

investors and analysts with its quarterly reports. you would think it was full of goodies, subscriptions are up, not many people quit after netflix started cracking down on password sharing. companies even said it had extra money and had because it has been buying fewer movies and tv shows because of the writers strike. now, of course, there is an actors strike as well. netflix said it buys material for an affinity with advance that it has enough material. ethics shares will likely fall as the market reviews at 6:30. same with desktop. it could be a rough day. ironically, both of them reporting all and all good news. as i understand it, the actors strike is coming to netflix today. yes, it will be interesting to see how that unfolds. it is 6:18 right now. another person caught on video in rome defacing the coliseum.

an italian tour guide caught a young tourist seemingly carving something onto the nearly 2000- year-old amphitheater. they immediately reported the incident to security. but so far, the person has not yet been found. in coliseum security said a third recent incident not caught on camera involved a german teenager. this all comes within a month of this video. you may still have seen it. a man you later said he did not realize the coliseum was an ancient artifact. he is now facing up to five years in prison and fined more than $15,000. >> not a good trend. >> it is really confounding. tending this morning a better news, golden days for dog lovers in scotland. look at that, heavenly. hundreds of golden retrievers and their owners gathered in the scottish highlands to celebrate the 155th

as we take a live look outside, you can see those low clouds covering just over 101. we will see the clouds clear out over the next two hours. the flat fire continues to burn in southwestern oregon. that smoke is coming directly down into our north bay. it has been also starting to collect in parts of the east bay as well at the tri-valley. as we move into the south they this afternoon, it will be warmer. reaching 87 in san jose. morgan hill reaching 94 degrees. we are in the upper 90s this afternoon with antioch and claremore at 88. along the coastline, low 60s. while we see some low 80s in palo alto. san francisco, upper 60s downtown. in the north bay temperature ranges from 90 in napa 278 in mill valley to 100 to in michalak.

that is where he will have a heat advisory that sparks tomorrow at 11:00. as i mentioned, take care of those pets. we have also seen some really extreme temperatures across all of the southwest. and another day with record high temperatures. phoenix hitting 118 degrees today. they will have some warm weather. but it is also not going to be that dangerous. you do want to take it easy this weekend with friday in livermore reaching 102. upper 90s on saturday, but then we will see those temperatures coming down. for our inland forecast, it will be hot over the next few days, with upper 90s in triple digits, and then we will head back to the upper 80s for the start of next week. again, keep it mild here along

>> we are following breaking news in the east bay. five highways are now closed because of police activity. mike is tracking that closure for us. >> the latest is pretty much what you reported there. that is all we know. 580 westbound saw a lot of slowing. i thought on the report earlier. westbound 580 coming over towards oakland, that is currently closed at about grand avenue. alternates would be highway 13 or northbound a 80. they are both moving at speed as you get to the area, joining up with highway 24. there is no other slowing, aside from a circle there. nothing major there. the back of the bay bridge did ease up. there is slowing there. we are also looking at hov lanes. we will have to take a look, but that is a lot. >> we were talking in the

weather department about the hotter temperatures coming in. we can see the nice, clear sunrise we have over san jose. yesterday at this time, it was mostly cloudy. we can already see the change. as we had out of morgan hill and make plans for earlier in the day, going to the playground will definitely be a better bet before this temperatures ramp up. from 53 in the next hour to 80 degrees at 1:00. it will be clear and sunny, but there are high temperatures expected through today, versus the record high for today, it will be very close, but just four degrees shy of a record high temperature. other areas are definitely hotter, but not close to a record. we will take a look at even hotter temperatures in tomorrow's forecast coming up in just a few minutes. developing right now, charlize and antioch after a bombshell announcement from the chief of police. he is stepping down after only nine months on the job. it comes in what is called a critical point in the ongoing federal investigation involving racist text messages.

ginger is live this morning. ginger, this is either coincidental timing, but it is raising a lot of eyebrows. >> reporter: that is right. specifically because chief stephen ford is announcing his retirement, just 48 hours before a critical hearing on friday where he is expected to testify, along with other officers from the antioch police department involving that racist text message scandal. there is an ongoing investigation into that matter. but chief ford saying that he is retiring and making that announcement, as another round of racist and homophobic text messages were made public. some made at the chief himself. the first batch of racist text

messages were made public by the district attorney back in april. and it involves some of the same antioch officers. the chief has not given a reason behind his decision to retire. but said he is proud of what they have accomplished and firmly believes the groundwork has been laid for organizational success. he adds that he sincerely hopes engagement with the community will continue and flourish. now, the announcement comes as a surprise to community leaders, who were hoping fords leadership would signal a turning point for their city. even antioch mayor lamar thorpe that he had not spoken with the chief about his decision and was surprised by it. >> will just have to continue to move forward. we've got a city manager position coming up, we've got other leadership positions in the city coming up. >> he was our only hope. and the fact that he has only been there for less than nine months, it shows that this police department is falling. it is in turmoil. and it needs urgent help.

strike the chief has not yet responded to questions about his announcement and friday's hearing. speaking of that hearing, five of the 15 officers subpoenaed have been excused because of, quote, industrial industry industries. -- industrial injuries. we are expected to hear from the chief today. he is expected to step down officially from his position on august 11th. also, he is expected to speak on his retirement. the naacp has been working very hard with the police chief. we will be keeping an eye out for developments in this story. kira? >> thanks. we will have updates on that in our later newscast. arranged parents are demanding authorities drop all charges tied to a chaotic crash involving police and reporters. newly released body cam video shows chaos as it unfolded july 8th. that is when officers work up the annual dolores park hill

bomb event, which police considered an unlawful gathering. it led to more than 100 arrests. many of them juveniles. at a hearing last night, police had an aggressive response from officers. in chief bill scott, who defended officers actions got an ear full. >> i do not understand why the police treated us the way they did, for not knowing who did what and when it happened. some of the parents who attended last night's events claimed their children were treated like animals. but chief cut scott said many were detained with concerns they may have been carrying weapons. the investigation is ongoing. happening today, the suspect in a freeway shooting that killed the five-year-old girl is set to appear in court today.

the five-year-old died april 8th after she was hit by gunfire and interstate 880 in fremont. her family was on their way to a birthday party. investigators later determined the shooting was gang-related, and that they mistook the families car for someone else. these three defendants are scheduled to appear today for a pretrial hearing. also today, u.p.s. workers will hold a rally and what organizers call practice picketing near their headquarters in richmond. investigators -- negotiations are now at a standstill with the clock ticking down to a july 31st deadline. if a new contract cannot be reached, u.p.s. workers across the country are promising to go on strike. it would be the company's first labor action since 1997. the bay area today taking the spotlight in the ongoing strike involving hollywood actors. there are plans to picket outside of the netflix headquarters in moscato. it is about pay, benefits, and

upper 90s for tomorrow and saturday. the coastal areas will be a popular destination. look how cool it will be in monterey. and it may be hard to shake the local as we will see throughout the morning into parts of the afternoon. just some peeks of sunshine. it is going to be very warm there. shorts and t-shirts, at least for the middle of the day, but a jacket for the morning as we are looking at our morning starting out in the low 50s. my team has been tracking the east bay issue. is it still going on? >> yes. circling here towards 80, there is an issue at monument with a disabled vehicle. i think they may have cleared the disabled vehicle, but that was a problem building for concord. we talked about this, 580. we just got word that they cleared 580, these -- traffic is moving better now once you get past the grand.

bloomberg say they think the fed will raise interest rates one more time and then quit because inflation is coming under control. a separate survey yesterday shows the recession is receding. when you look at the hard data, those are all solid. president biden has been calling all of that "bidenomics". although we have said for years that presidents have a lot of influence on the economy than you might think. biden will be talking "bidenomics" today. pennsylvania is a key state in the upcoming presidential election. if you take a look at the election that trump won, this was back in 2016. trump won pennsylvania, georgia, arizona, and michigan. in the 2020 election, biden won in savannah, georgia, arizona, and michigan. when we look at economics statistics, where is the economic growth? a lot of it is in pennsylvania, georgia, arizona, and michigan.

out-of-c fire ing in southwes oregon, ane smoke is coming directly down into the baarea, due to the wind direction. expect that again today, looking hazy, with even hotter temperatures. we are heading toward 80 degrees and 94 degrees in fresno hills. walnut creek reaching 96 degrees. but it is still nice and cool near the coastline. half of the bay is headed for 60 degrees while palo alto was the high of 80 degrees. we will see some upper 60s into done friend san francisco area. the bay reaching 92 and 102. we're starting to see some triple digits, but it gets even hotter tomorrow. that is when this heat advisory kicks in for the area shaded in orange, the interior valley. in fact, between 11:00 a.m. on friday and 11:00 p.m. on saturday, we could see temperatures up to 104. but also, decreased humidity increasing our fire danger.
