the rockies and the plains still in that. and then you get to detroit, buffalo, nashville, mayfield is in part of this area charleston and atlanta we're going to be watching this heavy rain out to the rockies and also into the central plains but unfortunately, more heavy rain where they do not need it, from mayfield to chattanooga, knoxville, anywhere from 1 to 4 inches of rain 1 to 2-inch rainfall rates possible here in the northeast as well. more flooding possible for new england. we'll be watching that the heat advisories and alerts, the numbers just keep growing. 85 million people from much of florida on into the southwest. temperatures today, more records from miami, gainesville, greenwood, laredo into midwood with triple-digit temperatures and going into the weekend, no real relief in sight maybe a little bit for atlanta, but otherwise, staying hot in the southwest, more records from albuquerque to winslow,

she took minutes before. while serving in south korea, king had run-ins with the law. just before he fled to north korea, king spent nearly two months in a south korean prison for not paying a fine for damaging a police car, according to a south korean government official in 2016, otto warmbier was detained in north korea for more than a year. he was released to the u.s. in a vegetative state and died less than a year later. >> he willingly ran across the border that makes him quite a bit different from your son. >> absolutely. but now that he's there, the facts are exactly the same they're going to hold him hostage and use him as a political prisoner >> reporter: and you know, savannah, the big missing piece here is north korea itself, we still haven't heard from them. they haven't even acknowledged that they have private king in custody. and it's really only after we hear from pyongyang that we'll really get a better sense of

this young man's fate. >> that's so worrisome matt bradley in south korea for us along the border there. thank you. let's turn now to washington where there is new fallout from congressional testimony by two irs investigators. they say their superiors and justice department officials suppressed a probe into the finances of president biden's son, hunter. nbc's capitol hill correspondent ryan nobles has the very latest. hey, ryan, good morning. >> hoda, good morning to you and the witnesses in this hearing are both career public servants one who said he's a life-long democrat they both claim the department of justice gave hunter biden special treatment, but democrats argue that that's not their assessment to make >> reporter: for more than six hours, two irs investigators who say they have no political motivations claim their superiors and federal prosecutors stood in the way of an investigation into the president's son, hunter biden. >> at every stage, decisions were made that benefited the subject of this investigation. >> reporter: joseph ziegler, who

is coming forward publicly for the first time, and gary shapley, testified under oath that the evidence they uncovered connected to the president's son was damning and worthy of federal charges. >> it appeared to me based on what i experienced that the u.s. attorney in delaware in our investigation was hamstrung, limited, and marginalized by doj officials, as well as other u.s. attorneys. >> reporter: with republicans seizing on the allegations -- >> you know whose story hasn't changed? these two guys >> reporter: democrats on the panel di not question the credibility of the witness' claims. >> i think that they're honest witnesses, they're public servants i don't question their integrity. >> reporter: but argued that they are investigators and prosecutors are the ones who get to make the call on indictments. >> that's standard investigators and prosecutors all the time, right? and so the prosecutors are the ones that make the decisions >> reporter: shapley and ziegler testified that u.s. attorney david weiss, a trump appointee, told them they did not have

ultimate authority in the case a claim weiss has rejected in two different letters to congress and attorney general merrick garland backed up. >> he was given complete authority to make all decisions on his own >> reporter: president biden has repeatedly denied any connection to his son's business dealings and specifically has rejected that he was with his son when hunter sent a whatsapp message to a business associate, a message the whistleblowers shared as evidence >> were you involved >> no, i wasn't and i won't -- >> were you? >> no! whistle-blowers is that there was enoug >> among the claims by first whistleblowers is ther was enough evidence to charge hunter biden with multiple felonies. prosecutors felt differently and have cut a plea deal with the president's son on misdemeanor charges, which he will answer in court next week. hunter biden's lawyer has called the whatsapp message cited by the whistleblowers fake an said the agents are engaged in an orchestrated political attack on the bidens. >> ryan nobles for us at the capitol, thank you

there are significant developments to tell you about in that mysterious disappearance in alabama police are saying they cannot verify much of carlee russell's version of events. sam brock joins us from hoover, alabama. sam, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. police have not come out outright and said there was no abduction, there was no toddler on the side of the highway, but they did build a case as to why both of these events seem to be extremely improbable while assuring the public there's no risk to their safety at the same time, police also saying they are revealing internet searches on russell's phone before she van der that -- vanished that are a key part of their investigation. new evidence and a clearer timeline are raising more questions this morning in the case of carlee russell the 25-year-old nursing studen whose disappearance for just over 48 hours led to a massive search effort, now prompting this conclusion from hoover's police chief >> we've been unable to verify most of carlee's initial statements >> where do you think she went and how would you characterize

be surviving so there's less than ten people around the entire globe, so out of 7.7 billion people, only around ten will die from a shark attack every year. they're not out to eat us or hunt us or kill us if that were the case, every time you would go to the beach, there would be someone who was injured. >> have you ever been scared down there has anything ever happened >> they're constantly shifting they can be really, really dominant animals, of course, there's time where i'm like, that's a lot of energy, i'll remove myself from the water if that's the case or handle what's going on and get out if they're ever too intense always kind of respecting that boundary of, they are apex predators, i'm a small human at the end of the day, so there's only so much that you can do >> is it true that you're supposed to bonk them in the nose if they're coming after you? >> no, i wouldn't recommend doing that, a lot of times, people, when they think about hitting, one, if you're punching underwater, it's like slow motion, so not great, and also, if you hit them in the nose, if you hit under, it can cause

>> guys, thumbs up >> it's a cool flavor. it's different good morning. authorities in the south bay are investigating another deadly crash. it happened just after 1:00 this morning on capital expressway and snell avenue in san jose. one person was killed, one victim in the hospital. no updates on that second injury. first responders say both victims were ejected and crashed into an electrical box. nearby streets still closed. it follows an accident 24 hours earlier when a driver struck three people in the east bay and a baby died. our kris sanchez is talking with investigators and will have a report on our midday news.
