5:00 am
right now at 5:00, taking the stand.
5:01 am
we'll preview what's on tap for antioch's outgoing chief who this week abruptly stepped down. only on nbc bay area, a bay area family takes legal action against their daughter's school district. that violent act they believe was preventable, and the response from district leaders. also, a flight to asia from the bay area turned around. the reason the plane went back to sfo after takeoff. >> good friday morning to you. thank you for joining us. i'm kira klapper. >> i'm scott mcgrew. obviously marcus and laura are off this morning. let's start with the forecast. i have a feeling it's going to be a hot one. we've been talking about it all week long. temperatures going up even more today for the inland valleys. it will depend on where you are. we take a live look outside in san rafael. it's cool, we have a few clouds overhead that will clear out
5:02 am
quickly and we're starting out with milder temperatures compared to what's ahead for later today. we're at 55? san francisco. it's 60 in concord and 64 in vacaville, martinez the warmer spot at 68 degrees. as we take a look at our clear view in san jose, let's go around the bay and what to expect. pacifica will be at a nice and mild 65 degrees, san jose in the upper 80s, while brentwood today will hit 105 degrees. heat advisory begins at 11:00, we'll talk about that and a look at the weekend forecast coming up in just a few minutes. mike, you're tracking a couple of things already. >> yeah, we have on the map at the top of the screen slowing as you're approaching the carquinez bridge. there was construction involving a couple of lanes and it should have been picked up at 4:00. so that's why there's slowing, because it's still there, apparently. we're looking at slowing eastbound 24, but it's westbound 24 where there's a car fire reported on the shoulder. i don't think there's any more flames visible. that's the transition toward
5:03 am
southbound highway 13. it's different than the slowing pattern, so we'll track and sort out whether either of those is a problem. the rest of the bay moves smoothly with an easy start to this friday. >> thanks. 5:02. a live look at sfo where a disruptive passenger forced a plane bound for asia to turn around yesterday afternoon. united airlines said it started about two hours into the flight for taiwan and pilots turned around and police took a passenger into custody. not clear what that passenger said or did, but the plane did resume its voyage last night. happening today the first court hearing in the racist text messaging scandal embroiling the antioch police department and the outgoing chief is expected to take the stand. chief steven ford abruptly announced his retirement yesterday nine months after being hired. prosecutors and the fbi already
5:04 am
were investigating antioch pd for what's been described as crimes of moral turpitude. the text messages surfaced in april with more messages revealed as recently as this week. despite all of this, antioch's outgoing chief still has his supporters, including the naacp. >> he was able to be in the community. he went everywhere reaching out. he just didn't go to upper leadership or the elite, he was at the barber shop, the beauty shop, he was at the bank, the car wash. >> the hearing is scheduled for 8:30 this morning. activists with the group reimagine antioch say they will be outside the courthouse in martinez. only on nbc bay area, one south bay family is talking about their lawsuit recently filed against the school district they claim failed to protect their daughter. and a warning, this video might be hard to watch. [ screaming ]
5:05 am
>> attorneys for the family say that video shows the incident which happened back in january. another student punching and dragging the unidentified 11-year-old girl by her hair. it happened at solorsano middle school in gilroy. we spoke with the girl's parents who claim the same students had been harassing thar daughter and they had already expressed their concerns to school leaders. they say their daughter has suffered posttraumatic stress. >> for the first few months, you know, it was hard to get her to come out of her room, to associate with people again. >> in a statement, the school district says it takes all allegations of harassment, bullying or abuse of any kind very seriously and is committed to the safety of all students and staff as its first priority. the district does not comment on pending litigation and will refrain from doing so on the referenced incident. 5:05. new this morning, disgraced former crypto king sam

bankman-fried facing legal action from the attorneys. he pleaded guilty to milking billions of dollars from investors in his crypto exchange to help cover losses in a separately-owned hedge fund. ftx's attorneys are seeking to recover money misappropriated before the exchange went bankrupt. their suit filed in bankruptcy court also claims he's now financing his defense with some of that money. a representative refused comment. decision 2024, a busy friday on tap for gop contenders making an early push for the presidential nomination. at this point former president trump maintains a significant lead in republican polling, despite the legal challenges. president biden touting his bidenomics plan to reshape the economy. "today in the bay"'s chris pallone is live in washington. still a lot of uncertainty for a lot of republicans. >> reporter: yeah, scott, a lot of time, too.
5:07 am
as we await a federal grant jury's decision on whether to indict former president trump for allegedly trying to overturn the 2020 election, many of his gop opponents will be out in places today like new hampshire, iowa and south carolina as they try to chip away at his sizable lead in the polls. former vice president mike pence among those who still haven't qualified for next month's debate. >> we've been setting record contributions online for the next several days. i'm confident we'll get there. >> i'm more likely to beat biden. i think my record in florida shows that. >> reporter: nbc news has learned florida governor ron desantis is planning a campaign reboot days after firing about a dozen staffers to cut costs. desantis will hold smaller events. thursday, hoping to break through on the economy with voters, president biden argued in philadelphia his policies dubbed bidenomics are working.
5:08 am
>> unemployment is down, but to the surprise of a lot of economists, so is inflation. >> reporter: but the prospect of a biden/trump rematch has some considering the idea of a third-party cannot. senator joe manchin attended a meeting with the group called no labels next week. >> if it's a matchup between biden and trump, i would go with joe manchin. >> with legal troubles mounting for former president trump, opponents see opportunity on the horizon. and the quinnipiac poll shows that in a theoretical rematch of 2020 right now, president biden enjoys a 5 point lead over former president donald trump. back to you. >> chris pallone, thanks. we're giving you a live look outside in oakland. clear skies, perhaps for now. clear yesterday, but hazy skies
5:09 am
had taken over the oakland hills early on. this, as an air quality advisory remains in effect as wildfire smoke drifts down from oregon. meteorologist kari hall had told us about that wildfire smoke from oregon yesterday. how are things looking today? >> we're starting out clear, so as we take a live look outside in san francisco, it will be another hazy day. we're going to still see drifts of smoke coming down from that fire. what's happening is we have this northerly wind so all of the smoke that's been gathering in southwestern oregon from the flat fire is coming in directly into the bay area. we're going to see more of that where we see the greens that indicate moderate air quality, and then as we see it turn yellow and red, that's unhealthy for people who are especially sensitive to wildfire smoke. and it's going to be hotter today. take a look at these numbers. in santa rosa reaching 94 degrees, the record is 99 degrees. so we are staying below a record high for today.
5:10 am
san francisco reaching 72, oakland in the upper 70s, and livermore may be about 9 degrees below a record high temperature, while san jose will be in the upper 80s for today. as we talk about the weekend, we'll compare how hot it's going to be versus what's ahead. that's coming up in a few minutes. mike has a look at lower gas prices. >> i try to avoid the highs in this chart. we'll call out the lows for alameda county, we have the second best price at $4.17, the valero, one price at $4.09, the outlier in livermore we've been talking about. in santa clara county, the next best price, $4.19 at great gas in matilda avenue. in the north bay we're looking at american canyon safeway on american canyon road, $4.33, the best by about a dime. on the roadways, we're looking at a smooth flow of traffic. we will call out the one incident because i thought it
5:11 am
was clearing but they have a traffic break going on. you see a little slowing west 24, approaching the transition to highway 13. that will affect the freeway itself heading toward the maze. i believe they can move the rest of the activity off to the shoulder again. no activity flames reported through the area and the slowing we saw on the carquinez bridge looks like it's starting to clear up now. back to you. >> thanks. next time you go shopping, how about paying by palm? amazon already rolling out its new technology at some whole foods stores. coming up on "today in the bay," where you can expect to see it by the end of the year and the added layer of security amazon says it offers to you. plus, a surprise twist for one of america's largest theatre chains that's suddenly chains that's suddenly rethinking a controversial new (warehouse ambience)

good friday morning. the time is 5:13. let's get you ready in palo alto. it starts out at 59 degrees. it's a cool start but it's going to heat up quickly due to the sunshine. it will still be comfortable this ing, so get in those outdoor activities before it gets too hot later today. we'll still have a wide range in temperatures. we'll take all our microclimates in the fast coming looking at the san mateo idge where westbound the taillights move smoothly. i put an arrow one set of lights slo movin

on the right shoulder. that unusual. no problems reported on the span. i'm watching for all the signs and so far everything is moving well. let's check the signs in the business world with silvana. >> thank you, mike. good morning. wall street is set to open slightly higher after a mixed session yesterday with the dow rising for a ninth straight session. that's the longest winning streak since 2017. the index also closing at its highest level since march of last year, but the s&p 500 and the nasdaq ending lower with the nasdaq falling 2%. its worst day since march. dragged down by netflix and tesla. the dow and s&p are on track for their second straight positive week. amazon is bringing its pay by palm technology to all whole foods stores by the end of the year. the system is already available at more than 200 locations. customers place their palms over an amazon one reader to pay for items. prime members who link their profile can get automatic
5:16 am
savings. amazon says it chose palm recognition over other identifiers, because palms are more private, allowing people to pay with a contactless gesture. amc is changing plans to charge for seats in the theatre. they're saying they won't introduce the plan nationwide. they found more than 75% of people who previously bought tickets in preferred seating sections chose to sit there at a slightly higher price. there was no change for those who bought front row seats, which cost less. amc will, instead, try to attract customers to the front row by investing in better seats. better seats is a good idea. invest in better seats. >> exactly, so you don't have to stair straight up into the sky when you're sitting in the front row. and i have so many questions about that amazon palm reading,

but i guess we don't have enough time. >> i don't know. we need more time for that one. >> we'll see you in a little bit again. thank you so much. speaking of movies, barbenheimer's big open is this weekend. >> it's an unusual pairing. >> yes, it is. >> people have been buzzing for weeks. the debut of "oppenheimer" and "barbie," hence barbenheimer. look at that festive look, including a life-sized barbie box and themed snacks. meanwhile, at the cedar room lounge bar tenders created a list of themed cocktails. other people are getting ready for a more somber film. >> why? how about because this is the most important thing that ever happened in the history of the world. >> "oppenheimer," if you don't know, tells the story about the creation of the atomic bomb. if you plan on partaking in this
5:18 am
barbenheimer theme, here is a potential itinerary. wake up, go see "oppenheimer," have lunch and decompress, get your pink on and go to "barbie," then go dancing. have some cocktails. >> i think that's the order. >> the serious then the fun. one down, one to go. the mega millions drawing happens again tonight because no one won. >> anyone who feels they should have won the jackpot, maybe you can make up with it with the mega millions. $720 million. the cutoff time to buy tickets is 15 minutes prior to 8:00. >> i always cross my fingers to win, but i never buy a ticket. so that's the flaw in the plan. i always forget.
5:19 am
has anyone bought a ticket? >> i didn't know which one was which, so i think i bought one for the won that somebody won in southern california yesterday. i am so unskilled at this. >> i got one at a raffle from a local charity. >> so you're in? >> i don't think the grand prize was quite so big. i did buy a ticket, though, yes. >> good luck to you both. >> i've still got some time. >> you have until 15 minutes before the draw. let's get you started this morning. we're going to talk about the high heat for the inland valleys and the cool weather for the coastline. we're right in between in san jose, as we start out with a clear sky this morning and it's going to warm up quickly. san jose is included in the heat advisory that will begin at 11:00 this morning. but it is mostly for the interior east bay, as well as farther to the north, as we see some of the valleys included shaded in this orange color. so that's where temperatures
5:20 am
will hit anywhere from 90 to about 104 today. and low humidity means a high fire danger, especially if we do get a breeze picking up. drink lots of water today, try to stay ahead of it before we hit that hit this afternoon, with cupertino reaching 91 degrees today, morgan hill will reach 99 for this afternoon. and we'll see a few highs reaching over 100 degrees from concord to livermore, up to 103 in antioch. oakland will be in the upper 70s. we move over toward the coastline where it's going to be so nice and cool. you'll also get more sunshine. so daly city will reach 74, and to the north bay we'll see temperatures hitting 103 for a high in ukiah and sonoma reaching 97 degrees. we've also been talking about the big heat dome and the record-breaking records. it's painful every day. phoenix on day 22 of reaching
5:21 am
over 110 degrees. it's been so extreme there. a lot of records broken. then we take a look at our temperatures in concord today reaching toward 100 degrees. it will be pretty much just this hot tomorrow. but it does come down a few degrees for sunday into early next week and then we'll have nicer weather. so i think a lot of people will be making beach plans this weekend. it's going to be nice in santa cruz, upper 60s and low 70s, but you can see the range in temperatures from triple digits to the upper 80s next week, while san francisco will see highs in the low to mid-70s and then we'll bring it back to the mid-60s next wednesday. mike, you were looking at a traffic break. >> we had highway 24 actually for a few minutes, all lanes were blocked and that's why there's such a big backup. i just got word on the chp blotter that everything has cleared. there was a car fire. no injuries reported but that was affecting the transition route and they had to stop all traffic. that has just opened up so these speed sensors should clear
5:22 am
quickly as there is lighter traffic coming in out of walnut creek through lafayette and toward orinda and past the earlier scene. the bay bridge toll plaza has no backup yet but we're looking at slowing for highway 37 and a bit for highway 4. the other stretch between 680 and interstate 80, we're watching that. the crossing toward san francisco, a smooth drive along the bay bridge span and no delays into the city from the north bay. >> thanks so much. it is 5:21. >> next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> there's a red flag on her account but she needs our intervention to fix it and get the checkered flag. that, plus an invitation for you for this weekend. for this weekend. i'm coumer investigator chrinss

as we go into this afternoon, making sure that we are staying hydrated and trying to get in the shade and air-conditioning as much as possible. we'll see slightly cooler temperatures by the end of the weekend. more on that in just a few there wit the hot temperatures co the greater risk of heat exhaustion. >> kris sanchez is live in san jose. you were saying earlier the best advice is to hydrate and then find a cool place to stay. >> reporter: yeah, and i think parks like this that have water features for the kid and shade over the picnic tables will be a popular option for families with kids who want to get outside, even if the temperatures are rising. but you're going to want to do it early because we know temperatures are going to be going up, up, up this weekend. an exercise physiologist advices pre-hydrating, which is drinking water before you're thirsty,

from the moment you wake up, because by the time that you are thirsty and sweaty, it's already too late. now, even if you're exercising, it is more imperative to do that. you can lose a half gallon of water just by taking a long walk in the heat. >> the more work you're doing and the more heat you're generating, the more you'll lose through evaporation. >> reporter: so this morning on the "today" show, the head of the cdc is highlighting how the agency is working with local governments in responding to this extreme heat that communities like ours and across the nation are experiencing. >> we're seeing for the first time where folks are designating someone as in charge of responding to the heat. >> reporter: so we are hammering home the idea of hydration, but we want to give you the warning

signs to look out for. heat exhaustion is pretty serious. people might feel faint or dizzy. you will see excessive sweating and pale and clammy skin and a weak pulse. but then things can get really serious if you see symptoms of heat stroke, throbbing headache, no more sweating, hot and dry skin, and a strong pulse and people can lose consciousness. so you want to watch out for people who are more vulnerable to dehydration like children because they're running around, they're too busy to drink water. my aunt reminds me that seniors are also more susceptible because seniors tend to lose their sense of thirst. once those symptoms set in, it can get serious fast. so make sure you are pre-hydrating and trying to find a cool spot to enjoy the day and weekend. if you're going to go outside, make sure you do it early. it's already 60 degrees this morning, so i suspect by the time i see you at 6:00, i'm
