the unhealthy conditions. this is "today in the bay." well, good friday morning to you. i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm kira klapper. laura and marcus have that friday morning off. kari and mike are here with us. we'll get to mike in a bit with the friday community. kari, hot temperatures, right? >> yeah, that's what we've been talking a lot about. also the wildfire smoke that's been coming in and making it look hazy. it is a spare the air alert day. you want to make sure you're catching public transit so we're not adding extra polluti to willready be out there and the ozone thall be building today. take a look at oakland, heading to work in the upper 50s and then at 66 degrees at 10:00, if you're heading out a little bit later, it's going to be warming up into the mid-70s as we go into this afternoon. we can already see the hazy sky. look at our high temperatures versus what we usually see for this time in july. in santa rosa, the average high

temperature for today is 83 degrees, but we're going to be hitting 94. and we'll see in concord a high of 100 degrees, usually we're in the upper 80s. san francisco reaching 72 and livermore reaching 100 degrees, san jose about 7 degrees above our usual high temperature. we'll talk more about high heat ahead and when it backs off in a few minutes. mike says that so far it's friday light. >> kind of cool for the traffic flow, but not for the temperatures. we're looking at 101 northbound, we have a little bit of slowing where we expect it for a friday. easy, lighter drive coming in out of south county. no major issues out of the altamont pass. we've had a smooth drive. things are starting to slow down a bit. as we look toward the bay bridge, the metering lights were turned on and the backup formed quickly to about here and then it held off. now things are kind of spreading out. for a period of time there was also a chp vehicle on the shoulder, so everyone was on their best behavior. back to you.

it is 6:02 and we start with breaking news. the death of a music legend. 20-time grammy winner tony bennett has died at the age of 96. like most everyone else, you probably sing along to his biggest hit, the iconic "i left my heart in san francisco", but his decades-long clear included many hits and collaborations with everyone from frank sinatra to lady gaga. his publicist says hed in hometown of new york city seven years after being diagnosed w alzheim. 's survived by his fe, f dren aine grandchildren. he waswo w shy of 97th birthday. a live look at sfo where a disruptive pnger forced a plane bound for asia to turn around yesterday afternoon. united airlines says it started about two hours into the flight for taiwan, that's when the pilots turback t. r landing, police took the

enger into custody. that passengaid or did, but the plane later resumed its voyage last night. happening today, the first court hearing in the racist text messaging scandal embroiling the antioch police department, and the city's outgoing police chief is expected to take the stand. chief steven ford abruptly announced his retirement on wednesday, just nine months after being hired. by then, the contra costa county prosecutors and the fbi already were investigating antioch police for what's been described as crimes of moral turpitude or corruption. the first racist text messages surfaced in april, with more messages revealed this week. despite all this, antioch's outgoing chief still has supporters, including the naacp. commy.was able to be in ent everywhere, reaching i , he just didn't go to the upper leaders or go to the

elite in the community. he was at the barber shop, the beauty shop, he was at the bank, the car wash. >> the hearing is scheduled for 8:30 this morning. activists with the group reimagine antioch say they will be outside the courthouse. only on nbc bay area, one family is talking about their lawsuit recently filed against the school district they claim failed to protect their daughter. a warning, this video we're about to show you might be hard to watch. [ screaming ] >> attorneys for the family say this video shows the incident which happened back in january. another student punching and dragging the unidentified 11-year-old girl by her hair. it happened at solorsano middle school in gilroy. we spoke with the girl's parents, who claim that the same students had been harassing their daughter and they had already expressed their concerns to school leaders. they also say their daughter

suffered posttraumatic stress. >> for the first few months, you know, it was hard to get her to come out of her room, to associate with people again. >> in a stam, the gilroy school district says they take allegations of harass many, bullying or abuse very seriously and is commit to do the safety of its students and staff as its first priority. the district does not comment on pending litigation and will refrain from doing so on the referenced incident. disgraced former crypto king sam bankman-fried new facing legal action from attorneys at the exchange that he once led. fried pleaded not guilty to milking billions of dollars from investors, in that exchange, to help cover losses in a separately-owned hedge fund. attorneys are now seeking to recover money they say was misappropriated before bankruptcy. the suit also claims fried is

now financing his criminal defense with some of that money. a representative for fried refused to comment. let's talk about decision 2024. it's a busy friday for gop contenders making an early push for the nomination. at this point, former president trump maintains a significant lead in republican polling, despite his growing legal challenges. president biden, meantime, touting his bidenomics plan to reshape the economy. "today in the bay"'s chris pallone is live in washington. there's still a lot of uncertainty for the other republican candidates. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. and a lot of time. anything can happen. but as we await a federal grand jury's decision on whether to indict former president donald trump for allegedly trying to overturn the 2020 election, his chief opponents are out in full force, especially today. they're in states like new hampshire, iowa, and south carolina. they're trying to chip into that large lead he has in the polls.

former vice president mike pence among those who still haven't qualified for next month's debate in wisconsin. >> we've been setting record contributions online for the last several days. >> i think i'm more likely to beat biden, my record in florida shows that. >> reporter: nbc news has learned florida governor ron desantis is planning a reboot days after firing about a dozen staffers to cut costs. aides say he'll hold smaller events and focus less on his record in florida. hoping to break through on the economy with voters, president biden argued in philadelphia his policies dubbed bidenomics are working. >> unemployment is down, but to the surprise of a lot of economists, so is inflation. >> reporter: but the prospect of a biden/trump rematch has some considering the idea of a third-party candidate. west virginia senator joe manchin attended an event with a group called no labels this

week. >> if it's a matchup between biden and trump, i know exactly where i would go. i would go with joe manchin. >> reporter: with legal troubles mounting for former president trump, opponents see opportunity on the horizon. and the latest quinnipiac poll also shows in a theoretical head-to-head matchup, a rematch of 2020, right now president biden leads former president trump by five points. >> chris, thanks. we're going to turn back here locally, taking a live look at oakland this friday morning. by the way, a spare the air alert has been issued for today and it's because of that smoke in the air. check out this smoky sunset from yesterday caused by wildfire smoke drifting down from oregon. it does create a beautiful sight, but it's because of the pollution, right? >> uh-huh, yeah, it's the smoke and particulate matter being scattered by the sunlight.

it gives us orange hues. it looks nice but thaen it's not nice to breathe in. it's definitely dangerous for people who have asthma and it will add to the ozone as well. when we talk about our air quality today, the most unhealthy of the air quality will be in the inland east bay and santa clara valley. we're seeing a measure of particulate matter over 100, which is not good for long periods of time. then we also have been talking a lot about this flat fire in southwestern oregon. you can see the concentration of all of that unhealthy smoke and it is being pushed down to the surface, and right into the bay area. so we're going to see another round of a hazy sky and moderately unhealthy air quality as temperatures warm up. and it really will depend on where you are. so brentwood hitting 105 degrees for a high today, while san jose will be in the upper 80s. pacifica will be at a comfortable 65 degrees. we'll see more of that tomorrow

before we cool down all across the bay area, so i'll have more on that in a few minutes. mike has a look at where we can find lower gas prices. >> alameda county calling out the second best price, $4.17, the valero in hayward, the best is still the $4.09 in livermore. santa clara county, similar range for lows, $4.19 at great gas on matilda avenue. in the north bay we'll call out the safeway on american canyon road at $4.33, the best in the county by a dime. let's get out to the roadways where we're talking about the bay bridge backup which started to build once again. reports of a minor crash just past the toll plaza, getting close to the metering lights. watching the flow on the span, i'm circumstance cling where the bay bridge toll plaza is. there is something going on just about where things start to

the south bay where there is some slowing. it's friday. there's still a commute in spots. we'll show you how things are shaping up. there was a crash near the bri bridge. wall street is set to open higher after a mixed session yesterday. the dow rose for the ninth straight session. here you see the futures this morning. s&p 500 and nasdaq yesterday lower, with the nasdaq really falling, dragged by netflix and tesla and dow and s&p 500 on their track for their second positive read. amazon says it's going to bring its pay by palm technology to all whole foods stores by the end of this year. the system already works in more than 200 locations. customers place their palms over a reader to pay for items, prime members who link their profile with their amazon accounts get automatic savings. amazon says it chose palm identification because palms are more private, allowing people to

pay with a contactless gesture. amc is dropping plans to charge more for the best seats in the theatre. the company rolled out a pilot program in three theatres with plans to make it nationwide but none of its competitors were willing to play along and the chain plans to drop it altogether. amc does say most people were willing to pay for preferred seating, about 10% chose to sit outside the preferred areas because that had no additional charge. trending this morning, as for the box office this weekend, expect it to focus mostly on atomic bombs and blond bombshells. >> i don't have anything big planned, just a giant blowout party with all the barbies and choreography and you should stop by. >> so cool. >> zero would be nice. >> two of the most anticipated movies of the year are finally out. >> absolutely. movies might be a good place to get out of the heat. >> that's definitely a good idea, because with temperatures really hot, you don't want to stay at home if you don't have air-conditioning. and so we're heading to the mall, the theatres, anywhere where we can find some cooler temperatures. and this is one of the spots that's going to be heating up. we take a live look outside in the tri-valley, with a hazy start this morning. we're also saying limit your time outside because of the air quality. we've had drifts of smoke coming in. we can see it as we look at those live views around the bay area. as you head out in mountain view, our temperatures start out in the upper 50s. it will be clear, sunny throughout the day, and still staying mild here throughout late morning into the afternoon. as the seven-day forecast comes up at the bottom of the screen, check out your microclimate. because it will be very different based on where you are. so the inland valleys will be included in the heat advisory, all of these areashaded ange. that's not the entire bay area. spots like oak andremont

will not be included andhen we're also not seeing a heat advisory for the peninsula, san francisco, and for much of the north bay up until you get over to the east of santa rosa and in the hills. so we are going to be watching out for an increased fire danger as all the vegetation continues to dry out and our temperatures heat up. for the south bay, we'll reach 94 in east san jose and 92 in los gatos. we'll also see upper 90s and highs over 100 degrees for the interior east bay, while oakland will see a high of 79 degrees. so still staying mild there. and cool near the coast with daly city, half moon bay in the low 60s, redwood city reaching 85 degrees, and some upper 60s for the outer sunset today, mission district reaching 74 degrees, and north bay temperatures mostly in the mid-90s, from santa rosa to sonoma, over toward napa. we'll be as hot as 104 degrees today in clear lake. then we compare that to what we're seeing across the south

and southwest, it's been really extreme for a long period of time, and phoenix today hitting 119 degrees. they've had record-breaking stretches of intensely hot temperatures and it looks like it continues for the foreseeable future. and then we do have cool areas where we can go and cool off, where we're going to see temperatures along the coastline only in the 70s. santa cruz today, the warmest day today at 77 degrees. and then we compare that to the 100 degrees we'll see for the inland valleys. it will be nice to have some milder weather. we'll go back to more seasonable temperatures for the middle of next week. san francisco will be in the low 70s throughout the weekend. mike, how is it looking at the san mateo bridge? >> it's looking pretty nice right now, a smooth flow of traffic. we had one issue on the right shoulder, the right service area, very narrow lane. that was early in the commute. never surfaced to be a problem and never got a report.

you see it moving smoothly on the san mateo bridge. there is a disabled vehicle right around the 880/92 interchange. the interchange is open, and may be getting to the shoulder quickly. it's a light volume of traffic. it's a friday, obvious, and still in the summertime. we're going to start transitioning over the next month or so. we're looking at a build, richmond getting toward san rafael. bay bridge toll plaza we had an issue, a disabled vehicle just around the toll plaza itself. i never saw a problem, but the chp says it was cleared and obviously something cleared up because the bay bridge toll plaza approach is also clear. no issues as far as this. but the metering lights are on and active for the span. getting toward vasco, we do see some slowing out of the altamont pass and little bits of brake tapping going on, it looks like north has more traffic heading toward brentwood off of 580. it is 6:22. up next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> there's a red flag on her

generatinghe more heat loss there will be. >> reporter: now, this morning on the "today" show, the head of the cdc is highlighting how the agency is working with local governments to respond to extreme heat communities are feeling across the country. >> we're seeing for the first time where folks are designating someone as in charge of responding to the heat. >> reporter: now, that's community wide. what you should do with your family, watch for the signs of heat exhaustion, that is if someone is faint or dizzy, has excessive sweating, pale and clammy skin and a weak pulse. but you'll want to seek medical attention immediately if you see the signs of heat stroke, which is a throbbing headache, no more sweating, hot and dry skin, a strong pulse and people can actually lose consciousness as well. you'll want to watch out for the family members that are more vulnerable to heat as well. the little ones who just want to play and do what they do, also

two weeks after those shows ended, that run with lady gaga. what a legend. we will miss him, indeed. his music will live on. it is 6:35 right now. and back here locally, tough talk from oakland mayor sheng thao after the latest wave of deadly gun violence. four people died in three separate shootings over a ten-hour span on wednesday. so far, police are revealing few details about any of the investigations. last friday you may recall an 8-year-old boy was seriously injured after a bullet hit his family's car. that lapped during a rolling gun battle on interstate 580. the mayor says the city will put new programs in place to cut down on crime. >> i'm working closely with the police chief and i'm in conversation with the governor's office and sheriff's department to really bring forward some very updated technology that

we're going to implement throughout the whole city. the city of oakland is one of the first cities, i fought to make sure that we are a pilot city to get the automated speed readers, so anybody goes over 11 miles per hour, they will be receiving a ticket. >> to combat freeway shootings, governor newsom last year promised 200 new surveillance cameras at 50 high crime locations. cal tran says the installation of the cameras is under way and should be completed by the fall. it's 6:36. happening this afternoon, santa rosa breaks ground on a new fire station that was wiped out six years ago in the devastating fire storm. the tubbs fire, the city lost its fire station. mayor natalie rodgers and congressman mike thompson will take part in today's groundbreaking. it will be at 1:00 at fountain parkway and stagecoach road.

so we are going to have temperatures ranging from upper 50s to over 100 degrees, it just depends on where you are as we head into the weekend. we're also talking about the air quality today. we've seen the hazy skies overhead around the bay area giving us those beautiful sunrises and sunsets, but you do also want to limit your time out there, especially in the inland east bay, as well as santa clara valley, where we will see unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups. that means people with asthma, any type of breathing problems. if you're sensitive to high amounts of pollution, do not stay outside for long periods of time. and now as the seven-day forecast comes up at the bottom of the screen, you'll see tomorrow is the peak of the heat and then lower temperatures are coming our way after that. so today we're headed for 92 in milpitas and morgan hill reaching 99 degrees. upper 90s and 100 degrees for concord and livermore, 99 in

danville, while oakland will be in the upper 70s today. we're still looking at temperatures in the 60s in half moon bay while san mateo will warm up to 80 degrees today. mostly upper 60s, low 70s for san francisco, still pretty mild there. but it will be turning very hot in much of the north bay, with santa rosa headed for a high of 94 and 10 degrees hotter in clear lake. then we compare that to the extreme heat we've seen for a very long period of time across the southwest, and phoenix today headed for an unbelievable 119 degrees. and this is the 22nd, 23rd day they've had temperatures above 110, and the overnight lows are about 100 degrees. it's just really unbearable there. then we take a look at brentwood where we are going to see some of our hottest temperatures headed for 105 degrees today, 103 tomorrow. those areas you do need to really take it easy, drink lots of water. and then, also, taking care of people around you as well as the

pets. it's going to get a little better early next week. as we take a look at our seven-day forecast, triple digits today and tomorrow for the hottest inland valleys, low 90s on sunday and we'll bring it back to more seasonable weather next week. we're not going to see the extreme heat in san francisco. it will be in the 70s here and mid-60s next wednesday. mike, you're wearing about a crash and you're keeping us updated on the eastshore freeway. >> the eastshore freeway is actually moving a little better. watch out, that car really took off after they passed the two lanes that are still blocked. this vehicle right there is the one that's damaged. another flatbed tow truck was arrived. there's a hit-and-run crash reported just as you're heading toward university, so this is one section right here getting away from the berkeley curve and heading up to ashby avenue. once you pass, everything is fine. coming to the bay bridge, distraction for the activity there as well and that is causing a snag on the eastshore
