at the border. this mor the white house will sueas for the way it is trying to migrants inir tracks. we'ree in washington with dene to remove a ent contial barrier bay area extremet threatens millions across the world, wildfires in the met train yen, deadly triple digits, the record-breaking summer shows no sign of cooling. this is "today in the bay." >> good morning to you. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington has the day off. we'll get a look at the forecast with meteorologist kari hall in a moment. first, we want to start with breaking news. mike has been tracking a major injury crash in the south bay. it's blocking all lanes of the freeway? >> southbound 101 completely shut down. i know some folks will say that's opposite the morning commute. it doesn't matter. first of all, there's not much of a commute so both sides basically have the same amount of traffic.

southbound being completely shut down. it's a huge issue. i believe caltrans workers will be out to put cones out, this is south 101 just past tully, everything shuts down by capital expressway. there's no traffic through this stretch. folks are being forced off at tully. you can see the traffic. those in the backup were getting off at capital expressway. that will take you over to king, mclaughlin will get you past the scene. northbound, that is the commute direction, but it's very light traffic throughout the south bay, and we do have one more incident affecting highway 85, or at least the on-ramp. we'll bring you those details on the surface street activity coming up. you'll be happy to know at least in the weather department things are looking much better. we're going to have cooler temperatures coming in starting today. and take a look at our trend for san jose. we'll see a few clouds early in

the morning and then we'll start to see a mostly sunny afternoon as our temperatures will be in the upper 70s and low 80s for the south bay. but it will still be hot for some of the inland valleys and san martin today reaching 92 degrees. we'll see about the same in fairfield, as well as santa rosa, while san francisco will see temperatures reaching into the mid-60s, san mateo will hit a high of 71 degrees. our microclimates still pretty spread out. we'll take a look at some cooler temperatures for the rest of the week. that's coming up in a few minutes. more breaking news this morning, san jose police surrounding a home right now. police say a man fired a gun, now they're working to negotiate with that man. this is happening in a neighborhood at the intersection of renaissance drive and grove street, across highway 237. the call came in less than an hour ago for this morning. police are asking people to avoid the area. we'll continue to follow it, of course, bring you updates as

they come in. breaking this morning, ceo elon musk wasting no time in re-branding twitter. check out the headquarters in san francisco. this video was shot overnight. people this morning will see the familiar bird logo has been changed to an x to go along with the app's new name. as of this morning, the bird is replaced online with an x. our ginger conejero saab will have reaction ahead. she'll join us in a live report in our next half hour. a political showdown heating up this morning at the southern border. it follows a move by the governor there, texas governor greg abbott to install a series of large buoys in rio grande to deter migrants. the justice department calling the move inhumane and says they've got to be removed. brie jackson is live in washington. the justice department is issuing a new deadline for texas. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, scott. so the justice department says that texas has until later this

afternoon, 2:00 p.m. eastern time, to commit to removing the buoy wall or get sued. a political battle at the u.s.-mexico border, the justice department says texas governor greg abbott has until this afternoon to have a plan to remove the 1,000 foot buoy wall installed in the rio grande, or face legal consequences. abbott's latest tactic has drawn backlash. >> barbaric behavior and texans are shocked, outraged. they've got this netting, this wire netting underneath them which can trap people. >> reporter: in a letter since last week, the justice department states the buoys violate federal law, raise humanitarian concerns, present serious risks to public safety and the environment. >> if a court determines these

floating buoys fall within the rivers and harbors act and they're the kinds of things the state needed permission from the federal government in order to place, then the state of texas will likely be forced to remove these buoys. >> reporter: some republicans insist congress and the biden administration need to do more to secure the border. >> the governor, no doubt, is doing everything he can to secure the border, but there is a disconnect between what is happening at the top and the person on the ground that is ing the actual function. >> reporter: illegal borde sings aren f record highs, but rem a hot butto issue. d the wallart of operatioonestar, that's texas' multibillion dollar effort to counter immigration, which includes their efforts to bus migrants from texas to democratic cities. >> the doj has sent a letter to

the governor of texas. has he responded? >> reporter: we're still waiting for an official response. governor abbott has until this afternoon to do so. he did respond on twitter shortly after the letter came out from doj, governor abbott appears to not be backing down based off of his twitter response, in which he says texas has the sovereign authority to protect its border. >> the court will have to figure that out. thank you much. president biden tomorrow will declare a new national monument honoring emmet till and his mother. tomorrow also marks till's birthday. it will include three separate sites in mississippi and illinois. till was abducted while visiting relatives in mississippi when he was accused of making sexual advances. days later his body was pulled from a river. two white men were tried on murder charges, but an all-white mississippi jury acquitted them.

two days later they admitted to the crime. happening today, jury selection begins in a three-day hearing to determine if a suspected serial stabber in davis should stand trial. authorities in may arrested the oakland native carlos dominguez that followed stabbings that left two people dead and another injured. last month a court-appointed doctor says dominguez was not competent to stand trial. legal experts say prosecutors will face a big challenge. >> you have to have a complete jury, they have to 100%, all 12 have to be unanimous that they find the person not competent or competent. if they don't, it's a hung jury and you do it again. >> if dominguez is found competent, his case then goes to trial. if not, he would be sent to a hospital to receive treatment with the hopes of restoring competency until he can stand trial. 5:08. oakland police are investigating a chaotic sideshow near the coliseum over the weekend.

the scene drew a big crowd around 66th avenue and the north side of the coliseum. witnesses say it started around 4:00 a.m., later moved to the south side on hegenberger road. responding officers broke it up after about 20 minutes. police are not talking about arrests tied to the sideshow, but the city has promised a crackdown on sideshows, including steeper fines and seizing cars and holding them for 30 days. thousands of holiday visitors are under evacuation orders on the small greek island of rhodes. this is from a string of out of control wildfires burning outward from the center of the island. so far, no deaths are reported, but at least six people have been treated for smoke inhalation. one british man and his family say they walked four miles to escape the danger in what is being called the largest evacuation effort in the

country's history. >> have you ever seen anything like this before? >> no, i've never been afraid to die, but yesterday i had that fear in me. >> wildfires are also raging on another greek island and conditions are being made worse by extreme heat. meantime, here in the united states, southwestern united states roasting in record heat, temperatures in phoenix set to surpass 110 degrees today, the 25th straight day. over the weekend temperatures in death valley 121 degrees. >> i lived in phoenix at 121 degrees, and it is miserable. it's like going into an oven. park rangers are warning visitors to take extra care. over the weekend a death valley hiker collapsed and died, as did two hikers in nevada state park. we get more from "today" show's miguel almaguer. >> reporter: good morning. it's going to be another dangerous day when it comes to the heat and in so many parts of the country more than 30 million people are facing heat alerts. here in the southwest in the

city of phoenix it's going to be over 110 degrees today, shattering another record. miami also shattering records. so really from coast to coast you have this dangerous and deadly weather, coming up on the "today" show we'll take you to national parks where there's been some deaths and also on popular hiking trails across the los angeles area. it's going to be another dangerous and deadly day. >> i couldn't agree more. it's very dangerous. and the thing is we're not getting any relief from it. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the heat wave and weather conditions here. she joins us. another hot weather day on tap? >> yes, what they're talking about is the heat dome that's caused this really long period of time of this extreme heat, it's now spreading off to the east. so we're going to see more of the country dealing with record high temperatures over the next few days, getting even hotter as we take a look nationwide at how hot it's going to be for high temperatures today. much of texas included in that

heat, but we're also seeing a lot of 90s and even expanding further north the north. then we're going to see more of those hot temperatures in the inland valleys. for us over the weekend, it was pretty hot inland but now we are coming back to something just slightly above normal. so it's not record breaking, but we're still well above what we should see for this time of year with santa rosa reaching into the low 90s today, usually we're at about 83 degrees. for concord, we're headed for 90 degrees, and the normal high temperature is about 88. we're going to be near normal for san francisco, livermore also feeling more seasonable temperatures, san jose a little lower than what we typically see. so we're seeing temperatures still ranging widely across the bay area and we're going to have more changing temperatures over the next few days. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. mike has a look at where we can find lower gas prices. >> i just happened to find them

behind me. contra costa county, $4.29 in a few spots in concord like national on clayton road. san jose's best is also $4.29, excel gas and mart on north 1st street. and in the north bay, vallejo has a couple of better deals. the costco on plaza drive is in the $4.11 range. good stuff reported through gasbuddy.com. on the roadways we have a couple of major issues. in the south bay, on the surface streets at camden avenue, it's affecting the on-ramp to northbound highway 85. there's police activity and an investigation. it sounds like a pedestrian was hit close to the on-ramp and that will continue for a bit. watch for local traffic control and take meridian as one of your local alternates. then southbound 101 still closed about tully road. so you may be able to get on at capital expressway, if you head to the area use caution. back to you. >> that's a tough monday. mike, thank you. improving your checkout

right now at 5:16, let's head to the north bay with a live look outside in san rafael. we're going to see mist and drizzle in some spots and low visibility, but clear for this stretch of 101. it's 52 degrees, nice, cool start. we'll have cooling changes ahead. but also that comes along with gusty winds. we'll feel that later on today and talk about that and more changes in our workweek forecast coming up in a few minutes. and we continue with the major closure, highway 101 southbound, this is in san jose, tully road is where they completely close all lanes because of a crash. just learned it involves four vehicles and three patients were transported from the scene. major injuries reported as a result. this closure, we don't know how long this will last. we'll talk about the alternate. we'll walk you through the south bay coming up. good morning. i'm silvana hanao from cnbc. wall street is set for a slightly higher open ahead of a busy week of earnings and a major policy decision by the federal reserve.

the dow is on a ten-day winning streak, the longest rally since 2017, and investors expect the fed will hike interest rates by a quarter point on wednesday, and we'll be listening to comments by chair jerome powell on what's next as the fed tries to navigate a soft landing for the economy. it's also the busiest week for earnings with 40% of the dow and 30% of the s&p 500 reporting. some big names include alphabet, microsoft, meta, 3m and boeing. apple stores are getting a new way to sell products. bloomberg reports employees will now be able to have items shipped directly to customers through their easy pay point of sale machines and that could be helpful if an item is out of stock so the store doesn't have to risk losing a sale if a customer walks out and goes somewhere else. also, if shoppers want to buy big items, they can pay for it in store and not have to lug it home. and nearly half of americans have at least one unused gift

now that's blowing away from us, it's blowing off toward the east instead of down into the bay area. over the weekend it caused a hazy sky and at times the spare the air alert that we had to start out the weekend. we're also seeing cooler temperatures, so san francisco today will reach into the mid-60s, we'll see mid-80s in novato and 92 in santa rosa. so still some hot spots as you make your way inland with concord reaching 90 degrees. we'll be in the upper 70s in fremont, 77 in mountain view and 75 in hayward. tomorrow it's going to be even hotter in some of the interior valleys like morgan hill, reaching 95, 96 in fairfield and still in the low 90s for santa rosa, while san francisco, the coastline and parts of the peninsula are feeling nice and mild. we get a nice cooling breeze heading toward wednesday as the high pressure backs off. this is the big heat dome we've been talking about causing

record high temperatures across the southwest. it's moving away from us and we'll have some cooler air coming in from the pacific northwest. our trend this week, it only goes up a little tomorrow and then the rest of the week is looking really nice with low 80s and san francisco will briefly make it up to 70. 60s the rest of the week. mike, what's the update on the breaking news? >> the update is we don't have an update, but we do know about the extent of the crash itself. we're talking about southbound 101, a crash just south of tully, closed all lanes because of the activity there. san jose fire has let us know there are four vehicles that were involved and three patients were taken from the scene. we know there are major injuries for at least one of those patients and we have all traffic stopped southbound 101. you can see by the traffic pattern on the surface streets tully road does not get into the backup. you're going to have to take mclaughlin or silver creek to get south of the crash, perhaps capital expressway, the rest of

monday morning off. >> happy monday to you. i'm laura garcia. let's start with a look at the forecast for this monday morning. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. >> it's going to be cooler across the bay area, especially for those inland valleys that had to deal with some very high heat over the weekend. it's looking so much better today and this is part of the reason why. we're seeing a lot more fog, low clouds over san francisco, and that marine layer is going to push some cooler air inland. so we head over to the east bay with a look at the morning trend, going from upper 50s to upper 60s at 10:00 and then upper 70s at noon. so it does warm up, just not as quickly as it did over the weekend, with danville hitting 89 degrees, pacifica will be in the mid-60s and santa clara reaching 77 degrees. mike, the freeway still remaining closed? >> it is. southbound 101. if you're driving through the southbound, south 101 remains closed. caltrans isn't there yet to put

out the cones. this is because of a crash with major injuries, four vehicles involved. we don't know when they're going to reopen those lanes just south of tully road. so do join south of there, perhaps south of capital expressway. you see slowing on the northbound side as well. there's another crash or perhaps some debris that reportedly came over from the southbound side. that's the slowing pattern we see. if you jump on at yerba buena, you can get back on. we have another crash just off of 85 that's affecting the on-ramp. that is the breaking news we're following. thank you, mike. this morning in san jose police are investigating a deadly overnight accident. it happened when a car struck and killed a man walking on camden avenue near highway 85. we have video into our newsroom just moments ago. police say the driver stayed at the scene and is said to be cooperating. but the investigation has closed

northbound 85 on-ramp there at camden. it's not clear when it will reopen. this is the 28th deadliest crash and 29th traffic death of 2023 in san jose. that's fewer than last year at the very same time. one is too many. breaking this morning, another big step in the re-branding of twitter, and perhaps the final signal in the end of twitter's past life, the bird has flown the coop. >> users are waking up to this x as the future. the bird is gone. let's go live to ginger conejero saab. this x thing is taking over online and at the headquarters. >> reporter: well, scott and laura, i guess you can say x marked the spot and that spot happened to be twitter headquarters in san francisco. just hours ago elon musk posted a photo of what twitter headquarters looked like with a giant x projected on it. you can also see here what the setup was like just before

midnight, two workers confirmed they worked for an audiovisual company hired by twitter to project their new logo. the x was projected on different sides of the building and it lasted for about an hour. the conversation, however, about the rebranding or about the new logo lasting much longer, continuing from the weekend to this morning. this is what you'll see on twitter's landing page this morning. it still says join twitter today, but there is no bluebird in sight. the url x.com directs people to twitter.com. elon musk posted on saturday night that the idea of changing the logo to x was to embody the imperfections in us all that make us unique. he also wrote, and soon we shall bid adieu to the twitter brand and gradually all the birds. since elon musk took over twitter, the company changed its business name to x corp. but

until now the logo and branding have remained the same. this professor from san jose state explained this seems to be part of musk's bigger vision for the platform. >> well, he's executing a plan, he talked about it at the beginning, which is having something called a super app. >> reporter: the super app was echoed yesterday, saying there are planning for x to have capabilities of audio, video, messaging and banking and payments. super apps have taken off in several other countries, but the professor says it may take some time for the concept to gain some traction here in the united states. he says that all depends on trust and on companies delivering trust. we'll see what is yet to be delivered by the new logo x. we have reached out to twitter but have not heard back. scott and laura? >> trust is going to be a major

stumbling block, we suspect. ginger, thank you. 5:36 right now. still a lot of unanswered questions this morning after a wild crash caught on camera stunned neighbors over the weekend in san francisco. take a look. it happened a little after 7:00 p.m. saturday when a car went flying over the sanchez street stairs near mission delores park. video showed that car speeding before it broke through a railing and barrelled down the steps. the crash brought down a tree and the car landed upside down on 19th and sanchez. after neighbors helped free five people from the car, surveillance video shows three of them leaving the scene. police say those people have not been found. the whole thing left neighbors stunned. >> i was reading bedtime stories to my 2-year-old and i heard a sound i could not place that was extremely loud. my family goes up and down these steps all the time.

newsom talked about a fine and the school board reversed course. these are the type of actions corey jackson seeks to eliminate with assembly bill 1078. it would require school boards to reach a two-thirds approval to remove any textbooks from the classroom, and it would allow the state to fine school districts that do not provide material with, quote, inclusive and diverse perspectives. >> and now we are working together to continue to strengthen the bill as we see things happen on the gro weav to gethrough thi pocal turmoil bef school traditionally begins, so t all of our young people need to do is learn. >> reporter: the bill has already passed the state assembly, now it's moving through the senate committee phase. superintendent tony thurman backs the measure, calling it important for students to learn

about all parts of history, the good and the bad. >> that's all we're trying to do, is take care of our students, get support for them. they're not trying to trample on local control. >> thurman says while other states are trying to strip away representation, he wants to ensure california goes the opposite direction. he's created a special task force with the hopes of elevating that conversation. in the north bay people in novato are being warned about a family of black bears spotted yesterday afternoon in the park. police were called in about a mother bear seen with her two cubs in one of the busiest areas. the bears were gone by the time officers arrived, but there were clear signs they had been there. police are telling everyone to be cautious. >> they're wild animals, stay away from the wild animals. give them the opportunity to enjoy themselves. there shouldn't be any interaction, and interactions are fairly rare. >> state fish and wildlife

experts say in general bears are afraid of humans and aggressive behavior is rare. but bears will be defensive when protecting their young or if they are startled. don't try it. let's take a peek outside on this monday morning. the sun's arrival over san jose. it looks like we' got overh fog, cloud cover is going to keep things maybe little cooler. s check in with meteorologist kari hall. >> in the valleys, looking forward to a cooler day after some really hot temperatures over the weekend. let's head to morgan hill. starting out at 55 degrees this morning, we'll be in the upper 50s, low 60s in the next couple of hours. and seeing those temperatures warming up gradually as we go throughout today. as we go around the bay area, looking at our high temperature, we're expecting today versus what's average for this time of year, in many spots we will still be above average. santa rosa reaching into the low 90s, concord reaching 90 degrees, we'll see san francisco's temperatures reaching into the mid-60s, livermore headed for 87 degrees,

and san francisco in the upper 70s for today. mike, you were looking at that big south bay crash. what's the update? >> the update is despite the fact that there are major injuries reported for southbound 101, seconds ago i just got word that three lanes are open now, southbound 101, three lanes are now open south of tully road. that's much better news. we still have a number of lanes, three still closed as you're heading south past the crash scene. it looks like folks are entering at capital expressway just fine as you head southbound. northbound there's a crash reported with some debris that came over from the southbound side. the timing doesn't reflect it would be from the original crash but we don't know when the report came in. that's the slowdown for 101. you can use 87, which is a lot clearer. but then 85 getting onto the freeway, police activity at camden avenue and it's affecting the on-ramp on northbound 85.

good monday morning. it is 5:45. as we get a look at the morning for foster city, along the peninsula it's going to start out mostly cloudy and those clouds will be slow to clear. only peeks of sunshine throughout much of the morning and that's going to keep temperatures cool, really helping us out in the inland valleys as well. we'll get a look at the range in temperatures across our bay area microclimates coming up. and we just got word that all lanes now are clear on southbound 101, all lanes are clear from the earlier major injury crash. the northbound side still has activity at tully that looks like there may be lanes blocked or crash activity clearing some debris. we'll follow this as well as the

75 in oakland, some low 70s for san mateo, and in san francisco a high of 66 degrees. tomorrow it's going to start to tick up a few degrees for some of the inland east bay, as well as the south county into the mid-90s. another hot day but there will be relief coming on wednesday. we'll bring it back to the 70s and 80s for many of those microclimates as high pressure that's been causing the record heat all across the southwest moves away from us, and that will allow for some cooling changes with a trough that's dipping into the pacific northwest. that's going to bring them rain around seattle and portland. for us, we get the stronger ocean breeze and our temperatures will come back down. take a look at san jose, what to expect over the next several days, reaching about 80 today and just a little bit warmer tomorrow. but then upper 70s and low 80s for the rest of the week and this weekend is looking really pleasant. a look at our overall seven-day forecast shows that we will see temperatures that will be very normal for this time of year, maybe even a little bit cooler than normal.

while san francisco will keep those temperatures mostly in the 60s, except for tomorrow when we will get a little more sunshine. mike, what's the update on that crash? >> kari, we did have those lanes reopen and we have good recovery for those speeds. that means traffic is quickly moving past the scene where it was bottled up on southbound 101 just past tully. major injury crash now completely cleared from lanes and i think the activity was slowing the northbound commute. we see it moving up here, we see how the congestion will travel north through the commute. that should get back to normal over the next 20 minutes. we do have this crash, a major crash, a deadly crash involving a pedestrian just off highway 85 and it's affecting the on-ramp because there's an investigation that continues. do keep that in mind. watch for local traffic controls. as we look at the rest of the bay, no big surprises for a monday. we're looking at slowing for 37 and highway 4. back to you. happening now, a new
