valley wise hospital in phoenix say they're currently treating two to three times more patients than in a typical summer. across europe, hundreds of millions are suffering through extreme heat including greece where our josh letterman reports thousands are fleeing destructive wild fires. >> reporter: imagine the terror. as the fire swept through here. tourists tell me they had just minutes to flee. some still in their bathing suits walking mile after mile to safety. and this fire is nowhere near out. >> reporter: back in the u.s., health experts say high temperatures are especially dangerous for pregnant women. like kristen butts who recently moved from buffalo to sweltering ft. worth, texas. >> i literally felt my skin burning. i'm like, no, this doesn't feel right. >> reporter: but everyone, no matter how fit, can be vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. this 24-year-old mountain biker kai torres bronson recently lost his life while helping dehydrated hikers in the desert east of san diego.

his passing a sobering reminder of how quickly extreme heat can become deadly, even if you are young and athletic. we just heard from the family of that mountain biker this morning. back here in minneapolis, temperatures are expected to top out around 97. tomorrow that's just shy of the daily 100-degree record here in minneapolis. and, of course, amid our climate crisis, more broadly, experts say earth is on track to experience its hottest july and possibly its hottest single month ever recorded. they say, as we know, this could get far worse unless humans make a drastic change. >> yeah. >> hoda? >> maggie vespa for us in minneapolis. thanks. >> let's go to al who is tracking this heat dome. >> guys, unfortunately, we don't see much of a break. this dangerous heat that stretches from coast to coast, 80s, 90s, 100. 280 million of us over the next seven days will have high temperatures above 90 degrees. 50 million will interest over the next seven days

temperatures above 100 all the from kansas to dodge city to yuma and fresno, california. over the next seven days, 60 million people will see heat indexes above 105 from carolina florida and texas and central plains into the southwest. right now 41 million people are under heat advisories and heat warnings. that heat dome expanding. you can see records possible in billings today. denver comes close. in phoenix, austin down to tampa, miami. the temperature, the water temperature in the keys yesterday, 101 degrees. that's bath water. we're talking about bath water temperatures. so the air cannot cool because of that. again, climate change being a part of that. late week, the temperatures spread. look at this heat. by friday, kansas city 102. dallas will see triple digits right through into the weekend. albuquerque, phoenix 118 tomorrow. las vegas will be in the triple

digits. buffalo heat index of 88. 93 in baltimore. 98 in minneapolis. 103 in oklahoma. by the latter part of this week we're talking 90s in hartford, dc, chicago. the problem is a lot of humidity. we put in that feels like temperature. triple digits for omaha, columbus, washington, raleigh hartford and nashville. this is very dangerous. you have to check on the elderly, your pets, and you got to hydrate and stay out of that midday sun. no activity. either do it early in the day or late at night. >> all right. good advice, al. thank you. let's move now to a new legal showdown tied to the battle over the border. as promised, the justice department is now suing the state of texas and its republican governor greg abbott over the use of floating buoys installed on the rio grande to deter migrant crossings. nbc's priscilla thompson is at the border for us. hey, priscilla. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning.

no court date has been set yet, but already this is shaping up to be quite the legal fight. on one hand, you have the doj accusing governor abbott of placing this 1,000-foot long buoy in the water in violation of federal law. on the other hand, you have governor abbott defiant, accusing the biden administration of trying to hamper his efforts to secure the border. this morning the rio grande river separating the u.s. and mexico has become the latest flash point in the battle over border security. the justice department now suing the state of texas demanding the removal of this thousand foot line of buoys, designed to prevent migrants from crossing the river. the government alleges texas installed it without federal authorization. texas governor greg abbott responding overnight. >> texas is defending its sovereignty and its constitutional right to secure the border of our state and our country. >> reporter: this honduran

couple told us they saw the buoys and went around them to cross the border. let through a fence on private property as the eight months pregnant woman was having trouble walking any further. the white house calls the barrier dangerous and unlawful, arguing abbott is trying to undercut the biden administration's security efforts. with monthly illegal border crossings now at a two-year low according to u.s. customs and border protection. >> the one person sewing chaos is governor abbott. that's what he continues to do, political stunts in an inhumane way. >> reporter: earlier monday, abbott writing in a letter to president biden, texas will see you in court, mr. president. hugo owns a pecan orchard on the river and tells us migrant crossings are frequent. he says he supports some of abbott's border security efforts but calls the buoys inhumane and ineffective. >> it's not keeping anybody from crossing. >> reporter: still, immigration advocates say they fear migrants will drown while attempting to

cross the buoys. republican congressman tony gonzales represents eagle pass. do you believe the wu buoys are actually working? >> it's going to maybe be a deterrent. there has to be more that prevents people from entering that water. >> reporter: and just to give you all a sense, this buoy is about the length of three football fields. and so, migrants are having to go into deeper parts of the water in order to get around it. and then when they do, they're encountering razor wire all along the embankment down there and also dealing with fences like this one preventing them from making it ashore. now, as for what comes next in the lawsuit, the doj has not yet filed for an emergency injunction, meaning for now, the buoys will stay in the water. hoda? >> priscilla thompson for us there in texas. thank you. now to the latest on the possible third indictment facing donald trump. it could come as early as today. this one is over the effort to overturn the 2020 election. this is one of four major investigations that surround the

former president, including that classified documents case in florida, charges in new york state, charges stemming from allege hush money payments and then other state charges about possible election interference in georgia. let's bring nbc senior legal correspondent laura jarrett into this. let's talk about this potential second federal indictment because president trump reports that he received a target letter, oh, about a week ago from jack smith, who is the special counsel investigating among other things, trump's efforts to overturn the election. target letter in most cases means you're going to get indicted. >> yeah. >> where does this stand? >> right. it's really just a question of timing. and the issue here is that the grand jury is still hearing from witnesses. and so i think some people at home might be thinking, how could an indictment possibly be on the way if the jury is still hearing from witnesses and getting documents. >> feels like he's still investigating. can he indict while he's doing the investigation. >> we have seen him do that before. remember in florida, that grand jury investigating his alleged

mishandling of classified documents, that grand jury is still going. it may be the case that the special counsel decides let me indict on what i have the evidence and follow up with other indictments, other charges. that may still happen but hard to predict where we are but we know it's coming. it's just a matter of when. >> you can add charges, amend charges, change of the indictment. do you think timing is an issue here? do you think that the special prosecutor jack smith might potentially be saying -- signaling i'm going to indictment sooner rather than later? because he wants to get the process going. we noticed now in the documents case in florida that donald trump's lawyers had said, let's move the trial until after the election. they've been -- this is part of their legal strategy is to delay. do you think jack smith in this new federal case wants to get this process started sooner rather than later? >> i think that's certainly possible. the trump legal team's position is the trial shouldn't happen at all. they didn't want a trial date. and instead the judge in florida said i'll give it to may to split the baby in that way. but the special counsel knows

that he wants to drag this out. and he knows that if he indicts in d.c., the jury pool might be more favorable than in florida and certainly the judges in d.c. are very well aware of the facts related to january 6th. remember, they heard thousands of cases about that now. and so, it might be the case that he wants to indict and might still continuing investigating. >> this is where people see the legal strategy rung up against a political strategy because these are federal cases, both of these. the one in miami and the potential one having to do with the 2020 election. if the president were to be re-elected, potentially he could pardon himself. it's not something that's ever been done before. >> or he could just order the justice department to drop the case. he doesn't have to pardon himself, right? he decides who will be the next attorney general. and then if that attorney general decides i'll just throw out the case, it's all gone. so i think that's the clock that jack smith is running up against now. >> laura, very interesting. thank you. we'll be watching. breaking overnight, a u.s. defense official tells nbc news that a russian fighter jet damaged a u.s. drone over syria.

the officials says the russian jet flew dangerously close then deployed its flairs directly at the u.s. aircraft, damaging its propeller. the drone did not crash but was forced to land. the incident comes about two weeks after russian fighter jets flew too close to several u.s. drones over syria. setting off flairs and forcing the aircraft to take evasive maneuvers. the u.s. military is calling on russia to put an immediate end to this reckless behavior. 7:14. we have craig back with us. good morning. >> hey, savannah, hoda, good morning. good morning to you as well. let's turn now to a breakthrough in the carlee russell case. the alabama woman who said she was kidnapped along a highway. now admitting to police it was all made up. nbc sam brock joins us with details on this story that we've been following. sam, good morning to you. >> reporter: yeah, craig, good morning. what was supposed to be a scheduled meeting russell's meeting and investigators turned into email exchange and

a recent criminal case. the chief recently sent her a letter asking her to add enhancement charges for an armed robbery suspect named colby berry who investigators say robbed two women of their purses at gunpoint. the da's office declined, saying additional charges could add 50 years to life for a conviction. in a new video message the da says the overuse of enhancements is the reason alameda county has the fifth largest county jail in the world. she also says the two will meet in person to talk about it sometime next month. health workers across california began four days of picketing outside various kaiser permanente facilities. workers are planning to protest outside kaiser locations in san jose, richmond, antioch, san leandro and vacaville. they are protesting what they call unsafe staffing levels, which they say impacts patient care. the contract talks do continue. the health care giant says

eczema, allergies, even food allergies and eosinophilic esophagitis they wanted to look in this pattern to see if there was a pattern behind it and what that meant for children and their parents in particular, craig. >> take us through the patterns when kids get which allergies and why is it important for parents to know that information? >> hoda, it was interesting the way they described it. they are calling it an allergic march. this is essentially a march of allergies through the life of a child. started off 4 months, eczema that's when it starts showing up 13 months you can see there are food allergies and asthma. at 25 months the environment allergies, particularly hay fever. and then 35 months that more more rare condition that can lead to other things and the reason this is important

is because you want to look for these. the earlier you get them, the earlier you treat them number one, easier they are to treat and the less the child suffers with these type of allergy symptoms so it's important to pay attention to them and make sure that you're actually seeing the child. if you notice a rash when they're four months old, doesn't go away in a couple days, get it looked at. it could be eczema you also want to follow the guidelines for the american academy of pediatrics for things like peanut allergies once you introduce peanuts into their diet this is helping children understand how that might progress through the life of the child. >> thank you, dr. john. a wild animal encounter turned deadly this weekend near yellowstone national park officials believe an experienced hiker was killed when she crossed paths with a mother grizzly bear and its cub nbc's erin mclaughlin joins us with the latest on that investigation. hey, erin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. amy adamson loved nature so much so that eight years ago she left her job as an english teacher to embark on a 2,000 mile

want to get that kind of small shape, right basically, whenever you are doing like a short pasta, you want the veggies to be about the same size so they cook evenly. it is also a nice feel when you are cooking. so this is a nice dice here. we have some aromatics we have the onions cooking in butter put that garlic in there once the onions are soft, put the garlic in once it is flagrant fragrant so you pop it in, the minute you smell it, it's ready to go little chili flakes. you can skip them if you don't like heat. i like heat, so we're putting that in there. do you guys get a slice in there. >> oh, yeah. love it. >> lemon, too. >> yes great flavors. then we can pop all these nice zucchini diced in here the reason we're cooking the zucchini first is because you want to get that moisture out of it zucchini has a lot of liquid in it you want it to cook down that concentrates that sweetness. it just works out really well.
