we have the team here and we are going to get your traffic coming up in a bit, and mike has that covered. cinthia is in for kari. when you have a forecast like this, we love to have you. if it was bad, i would be, like, you can stay home. >> no way, girl. >> i was looking at the calendar and it's the last weekend of july. >> crazy. >> we have talked about heat, you know, some weekends and now we are going to talk about comfortable weather in store for our weekend. first we have to get there. out the door in mountain view, if you are headed to work you might want to bring a jacket because it will be a typical bay area start where we have fog in some parts of the bay and then clearing out in the lunchtime hour and beyond with temperatures in mountain view at 75 degrees at 1:00 this afternoon. we will also wait for the breezes to pick up throughout the day as we have a battle

between the heat pushing from the eastern parts of the country and the fog coming out from the west. as far as the weekend goes, we will stay seasonable with 70s and 80s. we will talk more about neighborhood by neighborhood in just a bit, but first let's talk about the metering lights. mike? management turned the metering lights on at 5:42, and that is ten minutes later than yesterday, and we are looking at a gradual build. it's here, a steady build over the last 15 to 20 minutes. no surprises on the east shore freeway. we have highway 37 and highway 4. highway 4 sees the most build over the last few minutes, and then in the south bay we are tracking the crash, north 280 at bird, a couple vehicles there. we're tracking that. >> thank you, mike. new overnight for you, a rude awakening in the east bay

after a car smashes into the living room of this home around 1:00 in the morning in san leandro. this is on 148th avenue near bancroft. there was a person in the home but that person is expected to be okay and is not injured. the driver of the car was taken to the hospital but is expected to be okay. after the crash utility crews had to stabilize the gas line. police are not saying if that driver was impaired or if they know the cause of the crash. an officer-involved shooting in san francisco leaving questions and the community is weighing in. ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco with what police and other people are saying about this. that happened near homes, too, right? >> reporter: yeah, marcus, a number of people reacting to this and raising tense questions yesterday.

a number of agencies are taking a closer look into the shooting and conducting their own investigations. police are saying very little about this so far. this is what we know, the shooting happened yesterday afternoon, wednesday, in the bay view neighborhood of san francisco. nbc bay area sky ranger shows the view above that scene and you can see several police markings, but investigators have not confirmed if a firearm has been recovered. police say officers in plain clothes were making an arrest at fairfax avenue and catalina street when a man having nothing to do with the arrest engaged the police, and then marked cars showed up and the man was believed to be armed and he was taken to the hospital after he was shot and later died. >> the second male appeared to be armed with a firearm. how it was displayed or how it

was seen we are not specifying at this time. >> reporter: community members say these answers are not enough. some from the community also say the person that was shot was somebody who may have had mental health issues. several law enforcement agencies including the internal affairs division and the police accountability are all investigating what happened. sfpd will be hosting a town hall within the next ten days and they will talk more about the shooting itself as well as the investigations that have followed. in san francisco, ginger conejero saab for "today in the bay." >> a lot to uncover there. thank you. a deadly stabbing has people asking question. a victim was discovered in an apartment building west of el

camino real. police are identified the suspect and believe the victim was targeted and right now they are not revealing further details. a follow-up on the crash in delores park and 19th street. two of the five that left the scene have been arrested and police are still searching for three more people. now to a live look in san francisco. this is where there is new hope the emerging industry could save the city, and that industry? artificial intelligence. i am sure you are aware of the post pandemic struggles san francisco is facing, and that includes the storefronts that are empty, and overwhelming homelessness and theft.

dealing with dangerous temperatures at least through tomorrow. the impact is being felt on some of our nation's crops as well, including one minnesota corn farmer that says this year he may only see about one-third of his normal harvest. >> it all depends if we get more rain. that's the million-dollar question right there. >> another unusual problem in minnesota this year, hey is occasionally combusting spontaneously sparking fires. flames have destroyed several barns there over the past month. today in the bay's cinthia pimentel is here. so far we have been mild. >> yeah, the temperatures and low amounts of wildfires out west, and it's the heat that will impact our neighbors as we go into the middle parts of the country. overall you can see that most of the map right there in the orange color in the center of the country and even out to

parts of new england that are not only dealing with the heat and also rain that is moving in with that system, so overall uncomfortable weather for some. heat in recent years have become more deadly than hurricanes and tornadoes, so something to pay attention to when we talk about the excessive heat warnings, not only throughout the country but here in the bay area. we will start our morning comfortable in san josé and then see the sunshine with temperatures reaching upper 70s by your lunchtime hour. we will walk you through the microclimate forecast, but first let's look at mike and gas prices. in hayward we have 4.09 at the shell on mission boulevard.

good morning. it's 6:13. let's head out to the peninsula. if you are heading out to work in foster city grab a jacket. temperatures are starting out in the 50s and then a slow warm-up as we go through your lunchtime hour. we will also feel the breeze picking up this afternoon. we will talk more about the microclimate forecast and the week ahead in a bit. the plaza, the metering lights are on. after the halfway point at the parking lot, things are just starting to fill in so that's great news out of the east bay. the bad news is there's still a

backup. we will talk about the south bay jam, coming up. we just got the latest data on america's gdp and it was very, very good. gdp, the measure of all the goods and services grew by 2.4% in the second quarter, and that was better thanxpec cons spending up and prices are down. and inflations at 2.6%. 's really, really close to congressional budget offic sized itsimates for the risk of recession and said it was less likely. a slowdown, maybe, but not a recession. a reminder the federal reserve raises interest rates to slow the economy. here's the head of the fed saying that same thing. we at the fed are trying to trip up the economy without causing

new for you this morning, inflation impacting people's feeling about tipping and so is the growing number of industries asking customers to tack on a gratuity. about two-thirds say they always tip at a sit-down restaurant, and this is down from last year. baby boomers are most likely to tip while the gen z, well, they are least likely. the survey shows peoples' own budgets are affecting how they tip. one local financial adviser says those feeling it most are those in the industries where tips are part of their paycheck like restaurants or hairstylist. he said tipping need not tip our budgets. >> just like, you know, when we buy something, we have to plan for the sales tax if we are going to go out and enjoy a service like dining out or some type of personal care, considering a 15 to 20% tip within the budget, and how much we are going to spend needs to

have plans in san francisco or want to head out the door for lunch, around 20 to 30-mile-per-hour winds, nothing too crazy but picking up as the day goes on. we are on a little cooling trend as you go through your day, and san francisco topping off at 74 degrees. morgan hill through san martin going to be in the upper 80s. as we go into your weekend, the valleys will see the temperatures holding steady. nice weekend for you to get out to sonoma valley, where temperatures tomorrow and on saturday will hold in the low to mid-80s. by sunday we are seeing the temperatures maybe come up a few degrees, but overall no crazy heat in our forecast. a comfortable weekend for you to get out in san francisco where we will see a little breeze, but mostly sunny skies even as we go into next week. as far as our inland valleys go,

joy to everybody and she's not here yet, as far as we know. as far as our temperatures go this morning, we are starting with fog in the valley. we go out to morgan hill, and that is cooling the temperatures down to 54 degrees, but we will be in the 80s in the lunchtime. a slower warm-up in novato. we will look at our taylor swift outlook in a bit, but for now back to you. >> thank you so much. new overnight, police are investigating the shooting of a pregnant woman in oakland. officers responded at 9:30 last night to international boulevard and 77th avenue. that's where the woman was found in a car. in the video you are seeing right there, you could see bullet holes. police say the victim should fully recover and it's not clear what led to the shooting. a string of violence including carjackings are

raising new fears in oakland and today people that live there will have their say. >> today in the bay's bob redell is live there this morning. what are city leaders doing to ease concerns? >> reporter: we're talking about the alameda county district attorney, pamela price, and one oakland city council member and the captain of the opd, they will have a meeting in the montclair neighborhood in oakland to address concerns about the crime that is very frightening if you experience this. there has recently been carjackings, and this was yesterday afternoon where carjacking suspects in a white fan crashed during a chase with police, and police did recover a gun. two officers were hurt with nonlife-threatening injuries, thankfully. there was an attempted carjacking on friday morning.

you can see it was captured on dashcam and posted to next door. the suspects use their white car to block the road and jumped out with guns, and a driver was able to driver around them and escape. police say an arrest is imminent in that case. on sunday four suspects carjacked somebody near skyline high school. >> they are also using a method where they are ramming the victim's vehicle from the rear and cutting off the vehicle from the front. >> reporter: opd has advice on how to reduce your risks of becoming a victim of carjacking. keep your doors locked and windows rolled up. if you think you are being followed drive to a police station or well-lit and busy area and then call 911. don't get distracted by

electronic devices, keep your heads up and be discreet with valuables. the meeting is at montclair presbyterian church, and pamela price expected to attend. she's facing a recall petition over criticism that she's soft on crime and anti-police. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." thank you, bob. more details this morning on carjackings. in orange you can see the weekly number of carjackings and a clear uptick starting in april. during a one-week span, there were 25 carjackings. you can see before versus after the pandemic. there were typically a few carjackings each week before and sometimes none. since november of 2020, double

digits are the new normal, and even more so this year. this map shows 133 vehicle thefts reported last week in oakland with nine reported on one day alone. new at 6:00a new call for volunteers to help rebuild the town of pajaro. you may remember the broken levee in march overwhelming the neighborhood and community. nearly every home suffered some kind of flood damage, and now a volunteer group is working to rebuild and are asking for skilled volunteers, specifically people that can work with drywall. you can contact hope city to help out. 6:36 right now. kaiser health workers continue to picket today across california. bay area protests are being organized outside facilities in san francisco, oakland, free mopped and san rafael. they are protesting what they are calling unsafe staffing

levels impacting patient care as contract talks continue. medical services will not be impacted. in response to this week's action, kaiser issued a statement saying in part we are currently bargaining with kaiser unions given where we are in the bargaining process, it's clear picketing by the coalition is not about drawing attention to new issues but rather than attempt to create bargaining leverage. it adds we will reach a great agreement. well, swifties are already blocking to santa clara before the first of two sold-out concerts at levi. we have a clock counting down to the show. while the show is still a ways off, some of the fans are hoping to get first crack at some of the merchandise. >> they got up early for it, and so did today in the bay's kris sanchez. she is live at levi stadium this morning, and you developed a lot of friendships out there. >> reporter: i did.

you know, it's kind of contagious, the enthusiasm and excitement. i wish i would have gotten tickets to the show but they are hard to come by. the official merchandise truck is already here and by the time it opens at 10:00 this morning the first person in line will have been waiting eight hours. you might think that's bananas. she came in from sacramento and is making a whole experience of it, and she said she didn't want to wait her concert time waiting in line for a t-shirt, and that makes sense to me. what is the significance of the bracelets? >> on taylor's most recent song, she says make a bracelet, and so we decided to make bracelets for fun. >> reporter: i was happy to hear they changed the policy.

in the south bay, maybe you did not get tickets to taylor swift, but you can get tickets to the santa clara county fair. it runs through august 6th. for tonight, the second day already and we are seeing temperatures holding at 70 degrees. maybe you want to take it up into the peninsula, and music on the square continues every friday at 6:00. also looking at beautiful weather there. we will look at what is in store with our weekend outlook and the temperatures, but first let's go to mike with a crash on the bay bridge. yeah, a crash on the bay bridge around treasure island. i think they slowed the metering lights down until they discovered they could clear it at the fremont exit. the metering lights are moving better and it's looser at the toll plaza. that treasure island exit will be closed tonight like last night.

bridge. that's an aggressive move right there as we look towards the peninsula. 92 doesn't show a slowdown just yet and we will show you the bigger build coming up. president biden will celebrate 75 years of integration in the armed forces today. >> scott mcgrew joins us now. it was president truman that demanded equality in the military. >> exactly, 75 year ago this week by presidential order. troops had been integrated before that, but this week 1948 truman signed an order demanding equal treatment for all armed persons in the services without regard to race, religion or national origin. the white house reaching out to the senate minority's office checking up on mitch mcconnell. this is video shortly afterwards where he returned under his own power and said he was fine.

nbc news cameras caught back up with the minority leader later in the day that said the president checked on him, and 81-year-old mcconnell teased 80-year-old biden where biden tripped over a sandbag at a speaking event. >> when biden called to check on me, i told him i got sandbagged. and the judge yesterday rejected hunter biden's plea deal after she discovered the two sides had misunderstandings about what he was pleading guilty to. the problem was really very straightforward.

hunter biden's attorneys thought the deal protected biden from further charges. legal experts point out it has been more than a week since former president trump was informed he's the target of a grand jury investigation. that's a step taken towards the very end before a suspect is indicted. trump's legal team says it's preparing for a possible indictment as early as today. trump has been charged by the special counsel in the classified papers case, and this next indict, if it comes, will also be from the special counsel over the attempt to overturn the election. of course, there's the election interference case brought by the state of georgia if that comes as well. marcus? >> thanks, scott. there's nothing like playing a struggling team to turn things
