documents case. this comes as the country waits with bated breath on the status of the other investigations faced by the republican frontrunner. alice barr has the full story. >> reporter: new charges filed against former president trump in the case surrounding his handling of classified documents. accusing him of asking an employee to delete security camera footage at his florida estate, allegedly to obstruct the federal investigation into sensitive national security documents brought to mar-a-lago. the updated federal indictment also adding an additional defendant, carlos de-olivera, described as a maintenance worker at mar-a-lago. three sources tell nbc news the special counsel's office told trump's attorneys to expect an indictment in the case centering on the deadly january 6 capitol attack and efforts to overturn the 2020 election. that would be the third and in many ways the most serious case

against the former president. mr. trump disputing that his lawyers were notified about a coming indictment he and his team adamant he did nothing wrong. >> this is unprecedented to threat and president. >> reporter: the former president revealed last week he'd received a target letter that nbc news learned cited three federal statutes, deprivation of rights, conspiracy to defraud the united states and witness tampering. special counsel jack smith's team has been investigating a wide range of alleged attempts to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power, including an alleged scheme to reject states' electoral votes and use fake electors, who would back former president trump instead. the allegations all the more explosive, landing as mr. trump is once again the gop frontrunner in the next presidential election. in washington, alice barr, ens with news. overnight, the senate passedity version of a defense spending bill.

the massive bill passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, in fact. it would deliver a 5.2% pay raise for service members and keep the military operating. one thing, though, that is still unresolved is the refusal of alabama senator tommy tuberville to allow hundreds of military nominations and promotions to go through. he's protesting the abortion policy, which covers the cost of travel for service members who need reproductive care. last night, president biden again called on tuberville to end the blockade. >> this freeze is already harming military readiness and troop morale. freezing pay. freezing people in place. military families, already sacrifice so much, unsure of where or when they change stations, unable to get housing. or start their kids in a new school. >> when it comes to the annual defense spending bill, the house and senate will have to agree on a final version. there is hope the bipartisan support from the senate will give the plan the momentum it

needs to get over political divisions in the house. the justice department is investigating the city of memphis and its police department. federal officials are looking into possible violations of use of force, searches and arrests. and whether the city engaged in discriminatory policing. officials also said guidelines will be created for monitoring special units, like the one involved in the brutal beating in january of tyree nichols who died three days later. there is a separate investigation looking into his death. florida governor ron desantis is doubling down and defending his state's black history curriculum. as he runs for president, he has faced a lot of backlash over that standard that students should be taught that enslaved people got skills that would help them. >> that was in spite of slavery, not because of. the ap course has made that same
