we go through the midmorning hours and then 70s in the lunchtime hour. what can we expect over the weekend? we're seeing clouds moving through the region, but otherwise the heat will stay away from our inland valleys, only going to warm up into the low 90s. i'll talk about why we have the last line in the headlines. we're watching monsoon moisture move in through the sierra. we're going to check on the roads with mike. >> we still have a crash in san jose. take a look at the map. green sensors dominate. that's great. we do have this section of the south bay that is still dominated by red. northbound 101. notice, since the last time we take a look, there is a backup starting before story road, not yet back to tully. there are two crashes, one lane blocked at mckee and now we're seeing the sensors light up differently, yellow, slowing on 280. i think some folks are shifting over to 87 to get past into and

to the airport. here is the bay bridge. the metering lights are active. it's friday light, though. developing this morning, firefighters still aren't saying if they know what sparked a big fire last night in san jose's sunset district. two people, one of them a firefighter, suffered minor injuries. the fire started about 8:30 near 19th and irving near golden gate park. it took more than two hours before firefighters had it under control. later today leaders in east oakland will hold what they call a day of action meant to address gun violence. it is focused on the corridor of international boulevard between 82nd and 90th avenue, an area with major crime and safety concerns. those same concerns were the primary focus of what at times was a chaotic town hall meeting in oakland last night, hosted by alameda county d.a. pamela price and the oakland police department. >> i think that she stands for fairness and that's what we support. >> i was pulled out of my car at gunpoint and deposited in the

middle of the street. they took my bag, they took everything. this is 10:00 in the morning up here in oakland. >> an overflow crowd filled the presbyterian church, leaving some unable to get in. frustration boiled over on both sides, with critics calling price too soft on crime. others were there to support the d.a.'s strategy, which includes in some cases dropping enhancement charges with the idea county jails are already overcrowded. among those attending, violent crime victims who say police and prosecutors are falling short. >> i want to hear from pamela price why kids who assaulted me and my friend and many others have been released and are out doing it again. >> we have to follow the law. the commission in 2017 issued a report that was a commission set up by governor newsom to look

for the first time in decades at our sentencing structure, and they recommended that we stop using enhancements the way that we have done it consistently. >> others criticized oakland police, claiming the department is dropping the ball on stopping carjackings and break-ins. police argued oftentimes their hands are tied by policies or budget restraints. another meeting is taking place in early september in east oakland. a new indictment for former president donald trump in the case of mishandled classified documents. a special counsel filed new charges against trump yesterday. the new indictment alleges the former president helped delete security video and obstructed the investigation into the classified documents stored at his florida estate. the former president's aide, walt nauta, has already been indicted. another trump aide has been added to the indictment, a maintenance supervisor at mar-a-lago. he allegedly told another employee that the boss wanted

the server deleted. >> the only way that indictment is as detailed in recounting those interactions is if a party to those communications is cooperating. >> trump has pleaded not guilty in the classified documents case against him. a trial has been set for may, but meanwhile, trump is bracing for a possible third indictment for his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. 6:06. new this morning, b.a.r.t. is reportedly taking a stand against lawmakers when it comes to fare jumpers. a bill authored by one southern california assembly member working its way through the legislature would decriminalize fare jumping on public transit. right now repeat offenders can be charged with misdemeanors and in extreme cases jail time can be considered. b.a.r.t. directors yesterday voted to oppose the bill. supporters, meantime, argue fare evasion enforcement disproportionately impacts people of color. the "chronicle" reports b.a.r.t.

police say it would send a message to officers that they should de-emphasize fare jumping enforcement. also new this morning, architects are being told to throw out the recent renderings for the a's planned stadium in las vegas. the las vegas review journal reports the a's are now telling architects to reimagine the plans because the original mock-up won't be feasible. it shows a stadium that's too big for the plot of land that's available. it also means they'll have to redraft plans for that retractible roof. the one request from the team is for architects to give the stadium an outdoor feel. right now the a's still need final approval from major league baseball. the lanterns are making a comeback in san francisco's chinatown. the iconic lanterns that hang above the streets were badly damaged in the storms last winter, and in the last few months the chinatown merchants association collected donations to pay for the new lights. as of last night, the new lights are on display.

business owners say the lanterns are a major part of chinatown and help bring in tourists. a heads-up this morning for anyone, especially thinking that they may try to attend taylor swift's two big concerts after all. here sa live look at levi's where the first of the two shows happens tonight with a follow-up concert tomorrow. the next half hour we'll take you there for a live report, but the shows, they're prompting state attorney general rob bonta to issue a new consumer alert. beware of counterfeit tickets. right now there is no specific scam to tell you about, but buying online tickets from unsanctioned sources can leave you high and dry. they recommend buying tickets from authorized vendors and don't fall for discounted prices, especially if it seems a little too good to be true. if you do fall victim to a scam, report it to the state's website. >> hopefully no scamming out there today. yeah, those fake tickets can

look really real, so be careful out there. weather-wise we're finally here. whether you're going to the concert or not, it's going to be nice. >> maybe lots of people have flown in from other parts of the country to see mayor swift. don't be afraid as you step out and see cloud cover. i promise you that it will mix out and we'll see a beautiful day to start off our friday. we're starting a little chilly at 59 degrees, but then as we go through the midmorning hours while people start to get ready, even as we head through the lunchtime hour, we'll see sunshine and temperatures in the mid-70s. let's go from the south bay to the north bay. maybe you have plans in santa rosa. we're starting under cloud cover and cool at 51 degrees, and a gradual warm-up as we go through the midmorning hours. by the middle of the day, we're up to 80 degrees in santa rosa and the wind will pick up as we go into the afternoon for just about everybody. i'll keep an eye on that in the full forecast. let's go to mike with

cheaper gas prices. >> vallejo seems to be the place to fill up, we'll give it up for royal gas, $4.11 on tennessee, a few doors down from express on tennessee for 2 cents more. for contra costa county, we head out to antioch star gas and mart on lone tree way and that's $4.19 in the middle. the south bay, we'll fill up in mountain view with the best at $4.29, the diamond mountain gas and mart. on the roadways we'll look at the south bay where this outstanding red streak will turn orange and then yellow. speeds will improve, i believe both of the crashes have cleared without any further incident, north 101 at mckee road. that will quickly clear for the early commute. things will get congested around levi's stadium. in case you hadn't heard, we're talking swift transit today. take the orange line, that's got the great america station from the b.a.r.t. station, caltrain, even the shuttle from ace. back to you. >> thanks a lot.

good morning. it's 6:14. we have finally made it to friday in oakland, but you might have to go to work. that's okay, though. we're starting off pretty chilly, high clouds passing through the region. grab a jacket. as we go into the afternoon it could get breezy and temperatures are at 69 degrees by your lunchtime hour. we'll talk more about what's in store for the weekend coming up in a few minutes.

what's in store in san jose, north 101 is still slow from story road to mckee, the crash is plural, the crashes have cleared from the roadway and i have not seen any problem on the sensors for 280 or the 880 interchange. we'll track the clearing and the build in other parts. good morning. very happy friday to you. it looks like a good day on the markets today. markets fell yesterday after we got news the american economy was doing much better than expected, and recession is now that much more unlikely. which sounds like good news, and it is, but it means there was worry about interest rate hikes. there you see the down arrows. roku stock ready to take off today after they told investors they were making more money than expected. speaking of santa clara, santa clara university's business school dean ringing the closing bell on the new york stock exchange, marking the school of

business's 100th anniversary. that's an honor to ring the bell. bummer, yesterday the dow ended a 13-day winning streak, its second longest ever. santa clara continues to go undefeated in football, by the way. space x launched a falcon 9 rocket last night from florida, which was unremarkable, but the plan was to launch a falcon heavy rocket behind it, breaking the record for back-to-back rocket launches set by the gemini program back in the '60s. it turned out the falcon heavy wasn't ready to go, there was a technical problem, so they'll launch tonight. the record set by pete conrad and dick gordon back in 1966 still stands. 96 minutes apart to meet up in space and dock and prove that docking was possible. mastercard sent a letter to banks asking them not to let customers use debit cards to buy

>> yeah. >> creepy, too. 6:17 right now. and new this morning, costco wants to build its biggest store yet in the central valley. it will be located in fresno. last week costco said its environmental impact report that plans call for 241,000 square foot store, the size of four football fields. it would be nearly twice the size of your average costco and include 32 gas pumps with a drive-through car wash. plans also call for almost a 900 car parking lot. they're going to need it. >> you'll need a gps thing on your kids. they just kind of skirt off. you'll find them in the toy aisle. trending this morning, no secret golden state warrior steph curry has mad skills from shooting threes to holes in one.

roadways, and those high clouds passing through the region, giving way to a lot of sunshine this afternoon. what can we expect as we go through the high temperatures with those spicy wings? really the inland valleys are going to warm up into the upper 80s and some low 90s, and in morgan hill. the rest of the bay staying with 66 in san francisco to comfortable upper 70s, low 80s in parts of dublin. as we go through tomorrow you won't feel too much of a change. we'll start with typical fog near the coastline and then warm up maybe a few degrees as we go through the afternoon. what can we expect as we go through the next couple of days? our temperatures have been holding steady in the bay area over the last couple of days and it will continue as we go through this weekend, where most of the heat is staying to the southwest and to the middle parts of the country. as we go into walnut creek over the next couple of days, the start to the weekend looks good. i see the temperatures peeking just a little bit on sunday, but no extreme heat that we're tracking this weekend. we're actually tracking a little bit of a cooldown as we go into the last couple of days of july.

we're already going to start off august and we're going to start off on a cool note in walnut creek. then warming up gradually as we go into the following weekend. as we look ahead at what's happening through the state, we're going to track high clouds moving in, maybe chances of some activity going on in the sierra. you see it popping up. i would say tuesday through about thursday, we'll keep an eye on that and see how that develops and bring you the latest. i'll leave you with the seven-day forecast, 60s through the rest of the week and our inland valleys holding steady in 80s and 90s. mike, let's see how the friday commute is looking. >> i like the trend on the seven-day forecast. here we see the worst slowing around story, continued improvement on 101 and no impact on 280. the ripple has not taken effect because traffic is so light. very pleasant drive. metering lights are on but no backup at the toll plaza for the bay bridge. back to you. 6:22 right now.

it's going to be definitely a warm one around the bay area, as we burn off some of that coastal fog. right now in san mateo over the bridge, it's a little busy. we're going to get busy as we go through the middle of the day, seeing the sunshine peeking through the clouds. by the lunchtime hour, sunshine and 68 degrees. what are the rest of us looking at? the inland valleys will warm up into the upper 70s, low 80s and 90s. no heat wave over the next couple of days. i'll walk you through the extended outlook. right now we're back to the peninsula for a traffic alert. >> it matches your dress. unfortunately, it's an injury crash. it's blocking three lanes of 280 southbound, so close to the westborough on-ramp. you have to avoid the westborough on-ramp right now. we're watching a crash there as you head south past the area of

>> reporter: i am not going to be one of the roughly 58,000 so-called swifties showing up tonight for the concert, tonight and saturday night at levi's stadium. it will be starting at 6:30. we spoke with fans yesterday out here. we know there are some fans out here right now. you're not supposed to be on property yet. yesterday we spoke to a number of plans who say they plan on showing up early, even though tailgating is not allowed on levi's stadium property. many fans have booked hotels in the area so they don't have to deal with the parking. this was the scene 24 hours ago. you remember when kris sanchez was out here, when hundreds of fans lined up super early yesterday morning just to buy t-shirts and other merchandise from the truck parked out front. tickets for the concerts tonight and tomorrow will be selling on the secondary market for hundreds, if not thousands of dollars over face value. we spoke with fans who don't have tickets, but are still going to try to show up outside

the venue, even though levi's says standing outside the stadium on stadium property will not be allowed. >> i'm going to be here for sure, outside, yeah. >> every single way, every social media aspect, every single group or whatever, trying to figure out how we're going to do it. >> reporter: santa clara police will be shutting down the street right here in front of levi's starting at 9:30 this morning, and, again, we're told fans will not be allowed to loiter around the stadium. there will be no tailgating allowed on site once the parking lot o a 2:00, though there is a hotel just off site that has set up a tailgating area in its parking lot. fans we spoke with, those without tickets, some way they are going to meet across the street off property and then play it by ear from there. so if you are coming to the concert, public transportation is your best bet, you've got the ace train, vta, b.a.r.t.,

caltrain, and if you're going to be driving in, or if you're not coming to the concert and you have business in this part of santa clara, keep in mind, santa clara pd has already put out the warning, there will be heavy traffic on 101, 880, 237, great america parkway, san tomas and the lawrence expressway. if you have business down here, try to do it before -- well, they were saying 1:00 is when they were expecting traffic to pick up. 1:00, being several hours before the show starts at 6:30. so this feels like super bowl 50 to me, it has that kind of vibe as far as the shutdowns and what people are anticipating. whether that turns out to be the case, i don't know. that's what it feels like. >> i would imagine. it's like the halftime show that keeps going. >> the lead-up just keeps going. >> thanks so much, bob. and if you've got any other questions surrounding that taylor swift bay area visit, we've got you covered.

a full guide for her bay area shows, how to get around, head to nbcbayarea.com/taylor swift, where you'll find a what to know guide. 6:36 now. happening today, a former san leandro police officer charged in a deadly shooting nearly three and a half years ago. he is set to return to court. jason fletcher pleaded not guilty to voluntary manslaughter. the shooting happened in april of 2020 inside the san leandro walmart store. security video shows 33-year-old steven taylor holding a baseball bat, and after a brief altercation, police say fletcher first used a taser, then used deadly force, which prosecutors later called excessive. fletcher has been out on bail and a trial date has never been set. 6:37. some chilling new details emerging about a deadly stabbing wednesday on the peninsula. investigators say the suspect streamed his victim's final moments on social media. the stabbing happened at the victim's home at hillsdale

garden apartments in san mateo. several hours later, officers arrested the suspect, 39-year-old mark mechikoff, in san jose. one of the victim's neighbors say officers initially went door to door trying to find him. >> we haven't found him yet, oh, we're still looking for him. it was very scary, yeah. >> you didn't know if he was behind your home? >> exactly. i didn't know if he was hiding in the bush, if he was going to come knocking on my door next. >> investigators believe this is a case of domestic violence. they also say someone in nevada was the one who saw the video streaming on facebook and contacted bay area authorities. an east bay chemical plant is facing a hefty fine for allegedly incorrectly monitoring emissions. the bay area air quality management district issued a $1.5 million fine to chem trade in richmond. regulators say the company's monitoring system routinely underreported its sulphur

right now that is john li, the "washington post" the first to report the white house will bar him from attending asian pacific cooperation meeting in san francisco in november because of his record on human rights. now, honestly, this will probably cause chinese president xi to skip that meeting in san francisco as well. the senate has passed a defense bill, which among other things would give pay raises to our sailors, soldiers and marines. the bill goes to the house where it almost certainly will not pass because republicans there want to add restrictions like a ban on paid travel for abortion and cuts to programs that promote diversity and inclusion. also today, president biden will take the last step to change the uniform code of military justice to better protect women in the service from sexual assault. the president will sign an executive order taking the power to investigate serious military crimes like sexual assault away

from the commanders of the units and bases where they occurred and give that power to special military investigators. it's the last step in completing the change placed into law last year. and a lot going on in the world of former president trump. yesterday prosecutors filed a superseding indictment adding more charges to the florida case. we expect an indictment in a separate grand jury in washington any time now, perhaps today. that one over the criminal attempt to overturn the election. a state of georgia indictment into election interference could come in the next few days as well. lastly, california senator dianne feinstein needed the help of an aide after she appeared confused as to what she was supposed to do. she was supposed to vote on that defense bill. instead, she attempted several times to read a speech. just vote aye, an aide told her. her confusion comes days just after 81-year-old senate minority leader mitch mcconnell froze mid sentence for about 20

where we'll see wind gusts, to bring a beanie and blanket to keep you cozy in the bay area. as far as the rest of us seeing winds picking up, by around 5:00 we're seeing winds pick up through napa, through the east bay, over the altamont pass and down through san jose. dying down a little bit as we go into our saturday around the bay. what can we expect with our temperatures? we'll keep it cool at 66 in san francisco, 82 in dublin and in scotts valley, then slow 90s are staying in our inner most valleys, even into tomorrow and sunday you won't feel too much of a warm-up, so perfect to do anything that you really want around the bay area. maybe some pool weather in concord and in morgan hill, seeing those low 90s. by sunday we are bringing them up just a few degrees. we're seeing 94 in fairfield, 93 in san martin, and a comfortable day in santa cruz at 77. the final days of july, going into august, we'll see san francisco staying cool and breezy over the next couple of

welcome back. we're moving you forward with a look at the top stories this morning, including people in oakland demanding more action on crime. >> later today leaders will hold a day of action in east oakland, meant to address a lot of gun violence going on. last night an overflow crowd aired their frustrations with alameda county d.a. pamela price and oakland police. some were left outside due to fire codes. frustrations boiled over on both sides with critics calling price too soft on crime. others were there to support the d.a.'s strategy, which includes in some cases dropping enhancement charges, with the idea county jails are already too overcrowded. >> i want to hear from pamela price why kids who assaulted me and my friend and many others have been released and are out doing it again. >> a report was issued from a commission set up by governor newsom to look for the first
