damian: we begin today with mava, the mexican american vintners association, and the annual cosecha harvest festival. with me on the show is miriam puentes with honrama vineyards on "comunidad del valle," also a strong member of mava; and then shirley trevino with sabor del valle. welcome to the show, ladies. miriam puentes: thank you. thank you for having us. shirley trevino: thank you so much for having us. damian: thank you. well, shirley, you just had your event in the south bay just recently, sabor del valle, and now it's time for mava. miriam, tell us about this great event, la cosecha, that's happening again. miriam: oh, so we're excited to be having our la cosecha event on august 19th. it's going to be from 5 to 9 o'clock at aldina cellars in healdsburg. and so it's going to be a lot of fun. we're going to have some music and some live auction items and some amazing wine. so we really hope that you guys could join us, come and support this amazing nonprofit. mava is made to really bring the latino vintners together and be

more visible as a community, and we really are here together to help and get scholarships for students going off to college. damian: and that's the bottom line. right, shirley? i mean, you did your part, again, at sabor del valle where you had all the latino vintners from napa and sonoma down in the south bay. when it comes down to it, it's about helping the community. shirley: yes, damian. it's very true. it's important that we help promote them because they're small-time vintners and--although they have excellent wines. we just want to make sure that their name goes out there just like the big wineries. and we had a special event on -- which represented along with various other wineries from the napa area. damian: and, miriam, i mean, this is a festival, a fiesta, call it what you will. i mean, this is a great pachanga

3:05 pm
present small bites, and there's going to be more than 16 wine--mexican-american wineries at the event so that there's opportunity to taste various types of wines. damian: yeah. and i saw that nacho moya the painter, the artist is also going to be there. so it's going to be another exciting event, and it--i mean, it happens there, right? the--miriam, right where the wines and grapes are produced? miriam: exactly. yeah. and every year we try to showcase a different winery and see--and go to their venue. and so you are really going to be in for a real treat and more than anything that we're connecting, right, working with the community. and this event is put together with a lot of hard work and dedication to bring the vintners together and to bring the community and come and taste our wines, learn about the stories, and motivate our future generations more than anything. and so we're so happy. thank you, sabor del valle, for supporting us. thank you, damian trujillo, for always helping us out as well, and it's all about working with each other and for each other.
3:06 pm
we had an exceptional time at sabor del valle. we've been attending for the last few years and it's a wonderful way of networking and working together, and we appreciate the re--that you guys are reciprocal with us, and come and support us as well. damian: yeah. well, thank you, miriam. there's the information on the screen, the annual cosecha harvest august 19th 6 o'clock at aldina vineyards. we'll be back with mava here on "comunidad del valle." stay with us.
3:07 pm
damian: we're back here on "comunidad del valle" with the mexican american vintners association. miriam puentes is with honrama vineyards and shirley trevino is with sabor del valle. and there's no competition right here, miriam. i mean, all these latino vintners come together and they're not rivals. they come and share ideas and share their wines and have a good time. miriam: you know, it's a--there's room for everybody. everybody has a unique story and there's definitely competition, but it's all very good competition.
3:08 pm
it's needed, i feel, and it has helped us and it has helped mava grow as a community. it's like going--having a bunch of chefs, right? you could share the recipes, but at the same time everybody has their own ingredient. and i think that's what really helps each and every one of us, and that's what makes us unique. damian: you know, and who better than--to work the land, right, and grow these grapes and then eventually become winemakers than those who worked the land. and you come from a family of campesinos. i think most--every vintner there in napa and sonoma county come from families of campesinos. so, again, who better to celebrate the cosecha than those who actually work the land. miriam: you know, it's such an honor to come here and grow with very humble beginnings and be able to make something of all the hard work and dedication that our parents and our grandparents and that we've been able to make ourselves and to really teach our families and our future generations. so definitely i feel that they are doing great.
3:09 pm
we have--we are a good representation of the american dream and hard work and dedication and how it pays off. and so we are very honored to showcase our wines and to share our stories and to put this event together. damian: yeah. mava is a staple of the entire bay area. we're lucky to have you all here in our region. and, again, you're already planning for next year up-- down in silicon valley. right, shirley? you're already planning sabor del valle for 2024 where honrama will be and all the others. shy: yes. talkbout a cnity workingant to togethand i to say that the ptional nership that s developedh mava shy: yes. partners is that they not only provide the wine but they're providing people to come to the event to support nonprofits in our area. and so we're very appreciative of that effort by both of them.
3:10 pm
and next year, we're--put it on the calendars, it's going to be on july 14th, 2024 at the mexican heritage foundation in san jose, california and we invite you to join us again. damian: thank you, shirley. and that's the bottom line. right, miriam? i mean, you can have all the success in the world, but if the community is left behind entonces para qué== so the idea is that it's to bring the comunidad with you. miriam: yep, absolutely. you said it just right, and it's all about working together giving back to the community. and we're working with nonprofits that at some point gave us the hand and made sure that we are there bridging the rest that are coming behind us and as well as helping those ahead of us. damian: and then just one last point on this, what can folks expect? they buy their ticket and then they're going to be strolling through aldina vineyards and tasting some fabulous wine, entertainment, [speaking foreign language] miriam: oh my gosh, so amazing--we're going to have some art showcased and amazing food, good music, and just

going to be a good time, and everybody is going to come and have a great, great time and you're going to taste some good wine. so thank you. thank you to the community, to the bay area, damian, and sabor del valle for your continued support. and we'll be stronger together. so-- damian: absolutely. well said. well, again, this is a--thank you, ladies, and we'll see you at la cosecha. this is happening here at aldina vineyards, folks. and so you want to log on to the website for mava, and that's the mexican american vintners association annual cosecha harvest august 19th 6 o'clock, aldina vineyards. up next on "comunidad del valle," lean in latinas. you want to stay with us.

3:15 pm
damian: for maria and anna, welcome back to the show. well, you've been on a couple of times, anna. tell us again--update us on lean in latinas. anna: yeah, absolutely. we are a nonprofit organization, and our mission is to help close the wage gap for latina women. you know, people are surprised when i tell them that latina women make about 46% less than white males. so that's about 54 cents on the dollar. so we have training and awareness and conferences and events and really bring attention to the fact that we have this wage gap. lean in latinas has been in practice for at least 5 years. i'm the founder and president, and we have grown significantly. it started with three latinas in my backyard and now we are over 2,000 members. and not only do we have members here in the bay area; we have members across the state, across s the country, and actually across the world.
3:16 pm
dadamian: and i sense some--a little bit of anger in your voice, anna, when you mention the wage gap, and rightfully so. i mean, it's incredible the numbers that you have for us. anna: yeah. you know, we are a very hard-working community and we're still subjected to various stereotypes. so, for example, there's a misconception that latinas are not as ambitious as non-latinas or as white males, and that's simply not true. we're seeing a significant increase with latinas getting a college education, applying for higher-level positions, you know, parents investing in their children's education. you know, if we don't address this wage gap, on average a latina could leave $1 million on the table in her career, which is--really stato it other aspects ofebody's life, whether that's being able to buy a home or other ways in which we can uplift our community. so yes, i, you know, continually do this work.
3:17 pm
and maybe it's passion, maybe it's that anger of really trying to achieve equity for our latina community. damian: well, it's well-placed anger. let's put it that way. jenny, your reaction when you hear words like that on the frustration and how, you know, we have to keep our sleeves rolled up. jenny salinas: definitely my reaction is, how long? i mean, just the amount of work that both anna and i have done with lean in latinas--i mean, there's--there were people before us that made lots of sacrifices to get us here, but me and anna also talk about; well, will we ever see the day where that wage gap actually closes. so we know things are going really, really slow right now and so that is why this organization was so important for us to really bring it forward and to say we are going to be the change that actually needs to happen or else who are we going to wait for. so here we are, you know. i'm from el salvador and, as you know, she's mexicana but raised

in the united states. we're all different, but we all have to come to the table to really lift one another up in our community. damian: that's beautiful. and, maria, how does it feel to be able to plant that seed so that when the tree blossoms and it gives fruit that we're not talking about a wage gap anymore? maria o'hollearn: damian, you know, as a mother it means a great deal to me. i hope that by the time my daughters complete their careers there will be equity, but at this time they're both professionals and they both negotiate very strongly to ensure that they're getting a fair wage for their work. one is a medical doctor. the other one is a director of marketing at a high tech company. what i'd love to see is the seed being planted within all of the latinas that; yes, you are worthy. you deserve more. don't accept less. feel empowered and learn how to negotiate better so that you can get away from the situations where you are being underpaid

because we are not on sale. we bring great value to our workplaces not just in skills but in multicultural and multi-vision perspective. we bring different perspectives from our culture, from our knowledge, from having an understanding of both the culture of the us and in other places or being latina and american. that should--that's an add-on. we bring greater innovation. that's not on sale. we deserve more. damian: that's beautiful. you know, the things that you folks are doing are--we do the show on nbc and on telemundo. when we did the telemundo show, i was telling them, anna, that i felt inspired after our 10, 12-minute conversation. how do you feel after coming out of your annual conference? anna: well, we're tired, but we're also very, very proud. we usuall out, ae have felt txcitement people have.
3:20 pm
we actually ask for feedback and we've had latina women write that they really were excited to see other latina role models, to see community; to see other latinas really leaning into empowerment, into speaking up, into creating community and, you know, take charge. it's called that because we know that every person attending the conference can do that either in a personal way, could do that in a professional way. they might want to take charge around improving their interviewing skills, improving the opportunity around negotiation 'cause that really helps close the wage gap or in any other way. we make it fun. we actually have a dj there on the day conference, and we make it engaging. you know, we don't want people just listening to a speaker hour over hour. we really do activities that engage the attendees, and we

have great support by many amazing companies. and in fact i think we're going to need a larger space for take charge conferences, but it warms my heart. it makes me happy. and we're all volunteers. this is an all-volunteer organization and we're coming from a place that we want to support our community. damian: oh, that's very well said. and, again, this conference is taking place here in newark. if you like to--if you like more information, you can log on to the website for lean in latinas and see how you can participate and maybe inspire someone else or maybe be inspired. there's a website on your screen. august 12th in newark, take--the take charge conference by lean in latinas. we'll be back and wrap this up when we continue. stay with us. ♪♪♪ oh ms. flores, what would we do without yoyou? leader of mamany, and pet t wrangler t too.

i mean, you look at the numbers and we see that the women andy, latinas in particular are attending college at a higher rate than their male counterparts, graduating at higher rates. is it when we get to profession--to the professional level that the barriers--the systematic barriers exist? anna: yeah. so, you know, we are part of the lean in organization. so we do leverage the various research that's done not only by leanan in but the mckenzie institute, and the gap really starts at the first step of management and the gap widens in the higher-level positions. so we see that gap starting at manager level all the way through the c-suite positions. soso those are thehe areas thate really need to focus on, is how do we move latinas in particular into those roles that can help close the wage gap, you know. but there's other things working to our advantage now. people can now ask legally where they are in the

salary ranange of their positio. they couldn't do that a number of years agago. i recommend that people ask what their range is, ask where they're at in the range, and really advocate where they believe they should be. and also at the time of--when you're applying for a position, you don't need to provide the rate of pay that you're making in your prior job. so there are a number of strategies that we can leverage and, you know, that's what we do in lean in latinas; is how can we share this information, how can we best prepare latinas to negotiate not only at the time of recruitment but through the tenure of their position. damian: that's so wonderful. it's a battle. it'll be an ongoing battle, but we're all in it together. jenny, you having part of that power as a powerful latina how do you--how easy is it to spread to the younger generations to make sure that, again, we're not talking about this same issue in 10 years? jenny: definitely.

i don't know that it's easy because i know that sometimes it feels like latinas have really climbed the ladder that they're the only, which is why the take charge conference is so important because they won't be the only. they'll be in a room full of, you know, women professionals. but i think it starts in the family. i can honestly say that, you know, me going to school and--i was a huge example to my cousins and to my primos and to everyone in my family, that it was possible. so it's really--it starts within your family but it can reach outside of your family into your community and always giving back, and this is why i do lean in latinas because i want to give back to the community at a larger scale. damian: yeah. it's great to hear, and i'm sure that every leader in lean in latinas feels the same way. maria, any final thoughts before we let you go here on "comunidad del valle?" maria: absolutely. i think one of the advantages of attending a conference like lean in latinas is that you're in--you enter with a variety of
