day around the bay area and very normal temperatures, as we go through the last day of july and get ready to welcome in august. we are seeing a mostly clear sky this morning as we see the sun starting to come over the hills in san jose. it will be partly cloudy throughout much of the morning, sunny through late morning into the afternoon, but there will be high clouds still filtering that sunshine as we go into the day with highs up to about 80 degrees. we'll see mid-80s for the tri-valley and some upper 80s for the far north bay, while san francisco will be in the mid-60s. we'll talk about the changes ahead for the rest of the week coming up. mike, you're hearing about a problem on 17. >> i'm worried about the potential for the problem as well coming northbound. this is not going to affect a lot of viewers, but there may be an issue for a disabled big rig, a semi truck with a 40-foot trailer is blocking a northbound lane as you travel from summit road into los gatos. the opposite direction this will be visible, so if there's a

significant amount of equipment we will see some slowing. we'll track that. meanwhile, there is slowing farther back coming into san martin, but it's building, coming into san jose right on schedule. no surprises as you're heading around the bay. good news so far. >> thank you, mike. there was another weekend filled with illegal sideshows across the bay area, now leaders are looking for ways to stop the dangerous street takeovers. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell joins us live. good morning, bob. what are police saying? >> reporter: good morning, to you. oakland police tweeted out yesterday they were putting more officers on the street over the weekend in an attempt to stop these illegal sideshows, but in spite of the extra resources, we know of one sideshow that still happened. this video was taken last night. this was at the intersection of park and excelsior in oakland, just one of the locations the group of cars visited throughout the city. you can see why sideshows are so dangerous and illegal. the cars generally take over an intersection, you can see they're burning rubber.

they drive in circles, sometimes they spin out, while people watch from the perimeter. >> i'm a double amputee and the guy almost hit me. just driving by me. they're completely out of control and they don't care about anyone around them. then fireworks are going off, my dog is going nuts. it's uncalled for. there's no reason to have this stuff around here. >> reporter: saturday night police broke up multiple sideshows across the city. here is one sideshow that was blocking the intersection of san felipe road and yerba buena avenue. police say they had limited resources and their focus was on preventing the sideshows and dispersing the crowds. not clear if there were any arrests. you might recall earlier this month alameda county supervisors approved a new ordinance to crack down on sideshows which should go into effect next month

with fines up to $1,000 and six months in jail. you can be cited just for attending a sideshow. some critics argue that the laws unfairly target people of color. in their tweet last night, oakland police pointed out that if you do take part in illegal sideshows, your vehicle can be towed and seized for 30 days. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. a lot of activity out there. 5:33 right now. a mother and daughter are missing in haiti after reportedly being kidnapped last week. now the state department is trying to find them. it's warning others not to go to that country. 31-year-old alex indul, an american nurse and her child, were taken while working for a relief organization in haiti. the two were last seen near port-au-prince. >> we have very deep concern for the situation and we are very

focused on working together with partners to try to help the haitians restore security, restore stability. >> last thursday the state department also ordered evacuations from haiti's u.s. embassy over concerns of violence. according to a u.n. report, gang violence has led to more than 165,000 haitians to leave the country. it's 5:34. the x on top of the san francisco building formerly known as twitter headquarters is shining again this morning. on friday workers turned that light on for the first time, the same day the city opened an investigation into the company for installing that sign without proper approval, and then less than 24 hours after it first lit up it was turned off. but we have video from last night showing the sign back ru. we've reached out to the company now called x and the san francisco department of building inspections about the investigation, but have not heard back. happening today, the city of

san jose teaching street vendors about their rights after a new video surfaces of vendor harassment. san jose city council has partnered with other organizations to host the fair. it all comes days after a video seems to show a security guard kick over a vendor's crate of strawberries outside of a home depot. police are investigating that video. today's session will have workshops on safety, marketing and workers' rights. it will also connect people with other resources to help. it starts at 1:00 at the city hall rotunda. taking a live look at san francisco, a new survey says san francisco is at the top of list of cities that people want to leave, data from real estate company redfin. more than one in four buyers want to leave. people say house prices are a major factor. here is a survey, home buyers looking to get out of new york city, los angeles, washington, d.c. and chicago, and the place they're looking to move to, las vegas is at the top of the list

and phoenix, tampa and orlando, florida, sacramento coming in at number five. summer's sweltering temperatures are partially triggering a spike in gas prices. aaa says the national average is about $3.76 per gallon. that's about 16 cents more than last week. california, meantime, maintaining an average of $5 per gallon. experts say cuts in production are to blame, but so is the heat. >> we've got a lot of refineries that are coughing and wheezing. they're not really geared to run with 10 or 15 days of 100-degree temperatures in a row. >> as the u.s. moves into peak hurricane season, the industry fears prices will continue to spike. we're always keeping an eye on gas prices for you, every morning at 5:00 and 6:00 a.m., mike inouye shares where to find the cheapest gas. it's 5:37. another look out at san francisco this morning, and the transamerica tower. let's check in with kari and see

what our day holds. >> that fog is going to linger for much of the morning and keep temperatures cool in san francisco and also give a lot of the inland areas a bit more protection from that valley heat. as we take a look at palo alto, we're headed from the upper 50s to the upper 60s by late morning. at lunchtime it's 70 degrees and we'll see today's high temperatures for much of the peninsula in the mid-70s. for the south bay it will reach into the low 80s and the tri-valley the mid-80s with a warm afternoon. but it's also going to be basically a repeat of yesterday with mostly cloudy foggy conditions in san francisco, expected to reach 66 degrees and 76 in the east bay. we'll get a look at warmer temperatures ahead in a few minutes. mike, you're tracking a new crash on the nimitz? >> i am. it just happened a short time ago. we see some typical slowing, a build southbound on the nimitz as you head to hayward. that's expected. there's a build coming off the

tri-valley and 580, a build in volume. not dramatic. it's north 880 at 7th, so as you're making the bend, there is a crash reported. not a lot of detail. it's been there for a few minutes and i haven't seen any slowing. we'll continue to track that getting to the bay bridge out of downtown oakland. meanwhile, the bay bridge toll plaza there is a little build in the volume. we should see the metering lights on any second because the volume does look standard. no major problems through the maze. oakland is moving slowly as well. the nimitz north and south past the coliseum, this is the volume heading toward the crash around 7th where we may see slowing. tonight they're going to have the off-ramp from the eastbound direction, the lower deck of the bay bridge at treasure island closed overnight. you'll have to loop back in the westbound direction. it starts at 11:00 p.m., so that shouldn't be a major issue. even for people going to the game for the giants, which will be over here, it starts at 6:45,

video caught those explosions, russia's military says they were able to take out three drones they spotted. some others ended up hitting buildings. one person was injured. on sunday ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy says the war is returning to russia, but it came up short of taking responsibility for the attack. in the last few hours, nbc news has learned of an attack in ukraine that killed two people and hurt more than 31 others. ukrainian officials are blaming russia for the most recent attack. donald trump's political rivals are trying to figure out where to position themselves amid new charges, possible new indictments against the former president. meantime, president biden touting his accomplishments in office. we're seeing low clouds in san francisco this morning, but we also have high clouds. let me show you this view from our sutro tower camera. as the sun rises, we're taking a look from san francisco toward mount tam. it is a beautiful view but a lot of people in the city can't see this right now. we're going above the fog and showing you what's happening and will today.st of the bay area ice cals. the high cloud mad we'll see them overhead as we go throughout today. we're going from a partly cloudy sky in san francisco to mostly sunny at noon. you will see some clearing, but our temperatures only reach into the mid-60s for today. you head down to san mateo, and the high will reach 71 degrees, and across the bay to hayward, expect it to reach 73. you make your way farther inland and temperatures will be warmer with livermore reaching 86 degrees. we'll see low 90s in morgan hill and san martin. it will be cooler tomorrow as the coastal fog is going to be a lot thicker and that's going to

keep our temperatures lower, with mainly 60s for san francisco, the peninsula, over toward the east bay, and low to mid-70s inland. we're going to see a significant cooldown midweek, but also the subtropical moisture coming in. that's the high clouds we're seeing this morning. that will continue through about wednesday, and then we start to see some dryer air moving in with cooler temperatures. take a look at santa rosa and the trend we'll see throughout the week. really nice and mild, we can leave the air-conditioning off. then look at the weekend. we'll have to start to blast it once again, especially saturday and sunday, as we head back for the 90s and upper 90s for some of our inland valleys. enjoy the break for now, because things will be changing, while san francisco won't see as many changes, we're staying in the 60s here through at least friday. mike, you're seeing the bay bridge backing up? >> the change is happening right here. the metering lights were turned on about 15 minutes ago and finally we see this visible on our camera. it takes a couple of minutes between the toll plaza view that

we have and the metering lights where the backup is. so this part had to fill in. now there's flowing as you exit the bridge. around 7th is where the crash is that was reported. not a lot of details, but i do see slowing for north 880. watch that if you're heading through oakland toward the bay bridge. highway 4 shows more slowing into concord, more slowing out of vallejo for highway 37, and also some buildup as you're coming down through hayward. there's a fire reported alongside 880. we'll check on that coming up. happening now, a warning from cal fire about smoke in the north bay. cal fire will conduct a second phase of a prescribed burn at the pole mountain preserve wednesday, they'll focus on the summit. the burn is expected to begin at 5:00 this morning, last until noon earlier this month more than six acres were burned to help with fire mitigation. still ahead, we're checking out what is trending this morning, including the

d morning, everyone. happy monday. scott mcgrew. marcus washington is off, still trying to recover that voice from the concert. he went to both of them. >> singing nonstop. >> he's a crazy one. >> i'm laura garcia. we'll check in with mike in just a bit. meteorologist kari hall is back with us this morning tracking what we can expect weather-wise. >> it's going to be nice and quiet, cool, our typical weather pattern around the bay area for the summer. as we get a look live right now in san rafael, it's a quiet morning start and we have a few clouds overhead. we're going to see temperatures start out at 50 degrees, a cool morning, and then it will gradually start to warm up as the clouds roll out, the marine layer peels away and we'll see sunshine as we go late morning into the afternoon. here is a look at our high temperatures this afternoon, with novato headed for 83 degrees. we'll see a high of 73 in oakland and 71 in san mateo.

dublin today reaching 81 with upper 70s in san jose. it will be hotter in morgan hill, reaching 90 this afternoon. so we'll take a look at the rest of the week's forecast. mike, you were looking at something in san jose. >> first there were flashing lights over here as we look at our camera in san jose. then it moved off of the roadway. everything is clear from our shot right here, you see the slowing approaching that 280/17 interchange on the southbound side. the chp report says everything was moved off the off-ramp but there must be something going on that's causing slowing sensors. it might be a law enforcement vehicle that is skewing the data. so far, no lanes reported blocked. the live camera didn't see a problem. all the way up on either side, no problems with the bay bridge. just the build out of the altamont. there is a crash in the area. i'll check on that and see if it's affecting 205 or 580. back to you. >> thanks. 5:02 right now.

after the 127 years, fans and employees of historic san francisco brewery are saying good-bye to an era. >> maybe they can say hello to a fresh start. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco. so many people not ready to say good-bye to anchor brewery. >> reporter: that's right, good morning. including a neighbor of mine who went around and purchased some bottle openers for some neighbors in the neighborhood. he says he want to keep the spirit alive. it's really a sentiment that was shared by many people who came to san francisco from all over the bay area to score some merchandise and some beer yesterday, especially the last day that those doors closed. many have shared these feelings about anchor brewery of wanting to keep it alive, since july 12th when the announcement to close the brewery and tap room came down. the company cited declining sales as a major reason for

closing doors and running out of time to save the business. since then there have been multiple stories of groups, some fans, others employees, trying to mobilize to buy the company. a group of employees have also expressed interest in buying the company, but their union rep says that sapporo, the company that owned anchor brewery, won't share financial records, so they can't make an educated bid. >> a lot of us feel like we're getting shut out because they didn't take us seriously. we're weighing our options on what that's going to look like. ideally, we would like to keep public taps and the bre itse eporte andrick s thekers have hired a legal team and haveunding sources o ta a companypokesperson tells nbc bay area by phone that the employee bid came too late, a deal was already struck to liquidate everything from the brand name and recipes to equipment and buildings, and that's why that company spokesperson said that the

employee bid just didn't work out at this point. there are a lot of fans who are saying that it would be nice to see those employees have a first to makebid, but so far didn'tk o the big question is, who will anchor anchor brewery in san francisco, if any at all. >> such an institution there. it's hard to see it go. >> it is. >> thank you, ginger. happening today, the man accused of stabbing the founder of cash app in san francisco is set to appear in court this morning. momeni is accused of killing bob lee back in april. prosecutors say lee may have had a romantic relationship with the suspect's sister. today's hearing will determine if there's enough evidence for a trial to start. momeni has pleaded not guilty to the murder. meantime, in a redwood city court, a judge will rule if the case against darmesh patel can continue. he was a southern california doctor who police say intentionally drove his tesla

off devil's slide with his family in the car. they all survived. at today's mental health diversion hearing a judge may decide to suspend the charges while patel undergoes treatment. tomorrow san jose city workers are set to vote on whether to authorize a strike. unions representing more than 4,500 city employees say they are facing a recruitment and retention crisis. the organizations say libraries, airport, affordable housing, emergency response times, all the things are seeing an impact. leaders are unanimously recommending members vote to strike. voting will be held in person tomorrow through friday. a strike could take place as soon as next week. we've reached out to the city overnight for comment. we have not yet heard back. a bay area drummer is asking for help after his van with all his equipment inside was stolen. les edwin is known for playing drums at pier 45 along

scheduled times have reverted to older settings or are gone altogether. apple previously said that it would fix the issue within the update to ios 16 back in may, but in later releases and even in the beta version of 17 it's still not fixed. best place to retire, apparently, is iowa. a new survey from bank rate finds that the hawkeye state ranks high in areas such as affordability, cost of living, crime levels and the quality of cost of health care, bumping out florida from the top spot this year. it's followed by delaware, west virginia, missouri and mississippi in the top five. bankrate says that's that were once popular, florida, georgia, and arizona, have seen the cost of living go up a lot and the housing markets there have become competitive, making it unaffordable for a lot of folks, particularly if you're on a fixed income. california, not surprisingly,
