here coming up. when we told you about the car fire in the middle of the span, and then another crash popped up around the bay bridge toll plaza, and if you have to head over to the bridge it will be a little wait as they try to figure those situations out. eastbound on highway 4, it's counter commute. onlookers, of course, as people head the commute direction. this was a crash that was reported about 20 minutes ago and it since has been blocking the number three lane out there in the east bay. otherwise, our commute around the bay area starting to pick up typically over the altamont pass. we will look at the south bay commute and how that is building. back to you. >> thank you. tough day for the commuters in the east bay, but also we

have breaking news in the east bay where hundreds of people are evacuated from their homes after hazardous chemicals were found in somebody's backyard shed. the evacuation here on your map, this is the area affected. the area is still off limits and affected residents are now staying at contra costa county community college. bob redell is live at the scene. do we have an idea when these folks might be able to go home? >> well, the report yesterday was maybe they would be able to return to their neighborhood behind me later this afternoon. >> reporter: the police are out here and not letting people come in. --

unresponsive in the swimming pool by attending summer camp thummer camp was in sané, and they found the girl unresponsive on sunday. the girl was taken to the hospital and the san josé police department reported that she died yesterday. police say they are still investigating how all of this happened. the summer camp has been canceled for the rest of the week. new at 6:00, novato construction crews are working on preventing future wildfires from destroying homes. crews beganemoving vegetn th could pro fuel for wildfires. the work is happening in a 60-mile area. the project is expected to last five years. it has been nice we have had a break in the higher temperatures, at least so far

for the beginning of august. taking a live look outside, you see the marine layer there, and that has been keeping us cool, and i say been because things are warming up. we can still enjoy today, right, kari? >> yes. we are starting out cool in a lot of areas this morning, including novato that is at 50 degrees and mostly clear. we may see the marine layer coming in briefly and then we are back to the sunshine for today. the breeze coming off of the coastline will keep our highs well below normal for this time of year into the afternoon. in fact, as we take a look around the bay area, we are looking at highs in the low 80s for the tri-valley. the peninsula, mainly in the 60s. for the east bay, expect it to be a comfortable 70 degrees with breezy winds. cool in san francisco thanks to the fog. upper 60s -- or mid-60s with low

school. we're kicking off the school year for the east side union high school district. in san josé, it will be jacket weather at drop off time. walking to school it's going to be partly to mostly cloudy with temperatures in the 50s. pick up time, a comfortable 77 with a light breeze. we will see the high temperature there headed for 79 degrees today. los gatos expected to reach 83. it will be breezy and winds coming from the west. temperatures in oakland will reach about 68 degrees. 82 in concord. we have highs headed again for the upper 60s in san mateo, while in half moon bay, about 60 degrees there. in san francisco, upper 50s, low 60s. marina district at 57 again for this afternoon, and that's about where we were yesterday. mill valley reaching 70 degrees, and upper 70s for santa rosa. we have been talking a lot about how hot it is elsewhere outside of the bay area. record heat continues,

especially across the south and the southwest. phoenix back over 110 for today. the high pressure that has been causing that is starting to come our way. take a look at brentwood and the changes we will see over the next few days. it's mild today but tomorrow it will heat up, and we will see the triple-digit temperatures in the forecast over the next several days. look at the weekend forecast with our inland temperatures going from 81 degrees to 101 degrees on sunday. it will change quickly. if you do have outdoor weekend plans in the valleys, make sure you include maybe water activities, swimming or stay in the air-conditioning. it will definitely feel like summer, but very mild in san francisco. we should get a little more sunshine here and highs in the low 70s. cinthia, you have been tracking what has been going on, especially with the bay bridge. >> yeah, it has built-up at the

a few weeks later her daughter tried to use it and target declined it, and liz looked up the history and found somebody else has drained it days after she bought it. she reported the fraud to target but could not get her money back. we reached out to target, and a rep looked into it and we were able to determine it should be replaced. target gave liz a $100 replacement card. liz told us, i don't think people realize how these cards hanging on racks out in the open can be hacked very easily. that matches what we have recently reported. some criminals target gift card racks, not just at target but all over the place. they write down the numbers to drain your balance or tamper with the bar code so any money you add goes to a different card the thieves have. scan the qr code on your screen to watch our story.

i am laura garcia. >> i am kris sanchez. marcus washington is off. this is a big day for students and parents at one high school in the bay. they could still be wearing their summer clothes, kari. it's starting off cool and will be mostly cloudy as we get started. we are seeing that all around the bay area. as we look at oakland right now, 58 degrees to start out. as we go throughout the day, not much of a warm-up. it will be cooler than normal. we will take a look all around the bay area, and we are headed for 79 degrees. there will be a lot of coastal fog, but overall a breezy day across the bay area as we get the cool ocean breeze keeping our highs mostly in the 70s and low 80s. for the north bay as well as the inland east bay.

we will talk about a hot weekend coming up. cinthia, you have been tracking a pothole in the east bay? >> yeah, i told you i would figure out if it's a northbound or southbound, and it's southbound and the it was said it's giving way, and if you want to avoid that take giant highway and go down to rum reul and that will get you in and out of there. there's a car in the center divide on 580 as people are trying to get out of tracie. hazmat teams still working on an incident that kept hundreds out of their homes last

night. the fire department discovered hazardous chemicals in a shed, and you can see on the evacuation map the area. it's still off limits and affected residents are staying at the contra costa community college. long night for them, no doubt. we are told the earliest they could be back home is this afternoon. and then there was a suspected burglary after somebody drove that car into a 7-eleven in oakland early this morning. it was on 23rd avenue, and items were scattered outside in the parking lot. >> lot of people have been concerned about the violent crime in the bay area, and the highway patrol being tapped once

again to get another bay area city to get a hold on the spike in violent crime. >> ginger, how is what is happening in oakland with the extra help similar to what we saw in the city? >> reporter: good morning, kris and laura. the governor sent help to san francisco several months back, and he sent chp officers to help address the fentanyl crisis in the city, and that seemed to have a positive impact and the number of officers doubled by the end of june. now it's oakland asking for help. chp officers will be strategically deployed throughout the city to specifically crackdown on highway violence and organized crime. it's a move so far that has been welcomed by oakland city leaders.

the oakland mayor issued this statement. i am grateful to governor newsom to grant this request. city council members said crime has gotten out of hand and extra enforcement is necessary. >> those are serious crimes that i have not seen -- i have grown up in oakland and i have not seen that for many, many years. it will take law enforcement to enforce the laws we have. if you do the crime you will do the time, and i think we need to get back to that. >> the council member says he welcomes chp help. he said taxpayers are paying for all of these agencies to keep people safe. >> we know the chp -- the governor september the chp to

partnership with san francisco as well earlier this year. what has been the impact we have seen from that? >> reporter: well, that's right, the joint operation included sfpd and the sheriff's office and chp. if you look at some of the numbers here on the screen, first in may 7 to chp officers were september to san francisco, and that was a successful operation because in the first six weeks officers seized enough fentanyl to kill the city three times over, and more than 115 people were arrested in those beginning weeks. by that time in june the governor doubled down on his promise of bringing chp officers, and then he brought in 14 to 20 chp officers in the city. now eyes moved over to across the bridge to see if it could have a similar positive impact in addressing the violent

violence concerns. >> it's a continuing problem out there. thank you. city leaders are hosting a town hall to address crimes in one of the city's most troubling neighborhoods. the meeting will address safety in the tenderloin. that meeti com amid the ongoing drug cri there. last month a man was shot and killed blocks from city hall. the meeting tonight starts at 6:00. new this morning, we are getting a new look at the man who police say vandalized a black lives matter mural in santa cruz. this happened over the weekend. you can see a man walk in wearing a helmet wearing a paint can in his hand. he then throws paint on two of the letters. the suspect was seen leaving in a red vespa or similar type of scooter. the mural was originally painted on the street in front of city

hall in 2020 after the death of george lloyd. 6:37 right now. former president trump will be arraigned on criminal charges for the third time this year later today. scott mcgrew, this time it's happening in washington, d.c. itself. >> that's right. the other cases, a state case in new york and a federal case in florida. this is the first time trump has been charged with felonies based on actions he took as actual president. the new york case involves falsifying business records as a candidate. the florida case is about documents kept after he left the white house. today's case involves trump's actions after he lost the 2020 presidential election, specifically conspiracy to defraud the united states and conspiracy to obstruct a

proceeding, and violating civil rights. prosecutors tend to charge crimes they feel they can prove in court and are not open to interpretation by a jury. many people feel trump motivated his supporters in the attac on col. you will sti his supporters say trump is protected by the first amendment, and he had the right to question the results of the election. that's not what the prosecution is saying. in fact, the prosecution says he had a right to speak publicly, falsely that there was fraud during the election, and that's straight out of the indictment. he's not free to do whatever he wanted. you have every right in the world to claim your bank shortchanged you, you can tell your neighbor or friends or anybody, that's your right, but

70s at noon. we do see the temperatures trending more towards 80 degrees during the middle of the day. with the valleys heating up inland i think a lot of people will head to the coastline. take a look at santa cruz's forecast, low 70s for the weekend for highs and much more sunshine. it will be a great weekend in the sierra with highs in the 70s at palisades tahoe. we will get a look at our valley heat coming up in a few minutes. cinthia, you are tracking the issues on the road in the east bay and looking ahead. >> yeah, we are looking ahead to what could be backup for the middle of the day in san francisco. we have the giants taking on arizona at 12:45, so right around that lunchtime hour we can see the buildup on the local streets as people get on and off of the bay bridge, coming up on 101 or 280. just a heads up if you want to avoid that area in the middle part of our thursday.

degrees and light wind and sunny. the high temperature this afternoon reaching 83 in los gatos, and 82 in morgan hill. you probably have seen the 7-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, and it's going to be hot this weekend for many of the microclimates. antioch reaching 83 degrees. a high of 69 in hayward. along the coastline, up to about 60 in half moon bay, while in palo alto you are reaching 77. for the north bay, sonoma and santa rosa reaching 79 degrees. more records are being broken across the west and the southwest. it's going to be another hot day, but we are going to see some of the heat starting to affect our inland areas as the high pressure nudges our way a little more. in spots like brentwood, we are going to see the temperatures ramping up quickly over the next few days.
