late morning, and by 11:00 it's all clear and temperatures will be just a touch warmer compared to yesterday. we're up to 81 today in dublin and reaching 71 in san mateo, novato reaching 83 degrees and 86 in santa rosa. so it will in some spots be a touch warmer compared to yesterday, but it does get really hot for the weekend. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. cinthia is already tracking a big issue for the roads. >> yeah, at 5:00 on this friday, we're going to head into the peninsula around south san francisco, southbound 280 at the westborough boulevard off-ramp. the golf course is right across from there. there was a car that overturned and has since turned deadly. the coroner is on scene, chp is on scene. we'll bring over into the east bay, another car that overturned this morning. this is counter-commute, eastbound 80, right around el

cerrito going around the mcdonald avenue off-ramp. if you need to get into the area, talk local streets and then hop back on 80. back to you. >> thank you. we're following developing news in the south bay, a wildfire continues to burn in the east foothills over san jose. there has been some improvement, but homes are still threatened. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell joins us live from the scene. bob, have firefighters told you about their progress this morning? >> reporter: we haven't gotten an update since 5:00 last night, but we believe they have made progress. the fire is burning in the east foothills here of san jose, just off clayton road. actually, we just got a little breeze, i can smell it. i cannot see the fire. when we were driving up, we couldn't see any flames, which is not unusual because fires like this usually suppress overnight. we did see what we believe were the flashing lights of the fire trucks on the scene. the clayton fire started yesterday afternoon, and by evening crews were able to stop the fire from spreading. as of 5:00 last night, the fire

was just 20% contained, but, again, we believe firefighters have made progress since then. at the time, cal fire says around 30 homes were threatened, evacuation warnings, not orders, they are in place for people living near three springs road up here in the hills. >> make sure you're aware, there's going to be a lot of moving equipment in and out of the area, keep your head on a swivel and try to be safe. >> reporter: the san jose fire department tells us that no structures were damaged in this fire. cal fire says the cause is still under investigation. reporting live here in the east foothills over san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. a sad update this morning out of the east bay, we now know an 8-year-old little boy who was shot last month is paralyzed. he was struck by a stray bullet on 580 near grant avenue on july 14th. the family's gofundme page says bullet and bone fragments were

lodged in his neck and spinal cord, paralyzing him from the neck down. the family is preparing for him to go home but they say it will likely cost $250,000 in the next few months to include a smooth transition, the costs include modifications to their home, car, rehabilitation, education, and 24-hour care. asa is one of at least seven children who have been shot on bay area freeways in the last few years. police have not said whether they've made any arrests. this morning former president trump back at his new jersey home after skpd arrested yesterday. trump pleaded not guilty to multiple felonies related to efforts to oven 2020 "todaythe bay"'se esults. ckson is washington. brie,ow soon can we expect trump to be back in court? >> reporter: former president donald trump pleading not guilty to charges related to efforts to overturn 2020 election results. >> this was never supposed to

trump would not have been indicted. >> it also reflects the seriousness of the issue the voters have to face in 2024. >> reporter: voters are divided. >> for them to nitpick him to death is a crime against our country. >> i would like to see my party open their eyes to see what's going on, to cut ties with him, and move forward with other candidates. >> reporter: if convicted, the charges could lead to a lengthy prison sentence for the former president. in washington, brie jackson, nbc news. >> thank you, brie. now, the justice department wants to move quickly on the latest case. the judge yesterday says she intends to set a trial date at the hearing later this month. what about the other two cases? the criminal trial into the hush money case in new york begins on march 25th of next year, just weeks after super tuesday. and may 20th of next year the federal criminal trial in the classified documents case starts. trump's legal team is expected to continue to push to delay all

three trials until after the 2024 presidential election. new this morning, california is looking at a new way to get water, and that could include purifying sewage water. for more than 60 years the state has relied on recycled water that flows through a reservoir before going to homes. this new system would allow wastewater to be treated extensively before we could drink it. it would go through carbon filtration, be hit with high intensity ultraviolet light along with other treatment steps. if approved in december, treated sewage water could hit your taps by next april. don't forget to buy your tickets. tonight you have a chance to become a billionaire. no one had the winning numbers for tuesday's drawing. the jackpot is up to $1.25 billion, with a cash option of over $625 million. the drawing happens tonight at 8:00. did you buy your tickets? >> not yet. >> still time. >> i have pennies at the bottom

as those cars and that bus come toward us on southbound 101. chp is making people aware there is, of course, that dense fog we're seeing and some high winds. we'll take a look at what this commute looks like as you're going through the peninsula and watch the build in the east bay coming up. good morning. very happy friday to you. look for shares in amazon to jump in trading this morning, after the company said it had cut costs and grew the top end. apple, meantime, reporting profits to investors, says sales of its iphones continues to slow, though there is a new model coming in september. big news is it's jobs friday. we'll get the latest numbers from the labor department at 5:30 our time. america has added at least 200,000 jobs per month for 30 months now. we are on a roll here. unemployment rates still very low. the thing i'm going to be watching is for wage data. average hourly earnings, the government calls it. i know you want to be paid more and i want to be paid more, but it would be great if everyone

else wasn't paid more, because that will slow inflation down. wages had been going up at a quick clip. workers asked for more money because prices were going up, which only made the problem worse. low wage growth is actually good news. speaking of growth, the mexican peso is growing in strength to the u.s. dollar, about 14% so far this year in 2023. currencies move against each other all the time and there are upsides to a stronger peso, weaker dollar. a stronger peso means a mexican consumer's money goes farther buying american products, which increases our exports, but mexican products become more expensive for us. the most noticeable change is probably in remittances, the money that people send to help their families out back home. that totaled $58 billion last year, but that money is not going as far. speaking of money, wells fargo says it's aware some

people who deposited money on thursday are not seeing it in their accounts today. wells fargo tells nbc they're working on a resolution. this isn't the first time they've had that problem. the bank had a similar issue back in march. the bank basically telling depositors, look, i know you can't see the deposit, but it's there and we'll get it fixed. >> trust us? >> yeah, i suppose if you can't trust your bank, who can you trust? >> unless you have more than a quarter million dollars, you are fdic insured. i guess you can afford to trust them. i think i about 72 cents, maybe, because i have kids. thanks, scott. new this morning, google making it easier to find and remove your personal information from its search results. the website will now send you notifications when it finds your address, phone number or email on the web. you'll then be able to review and request that that information is removed. it's all part of google's

then we head into the day tomorrow. look at how much hotter it's going to be. reaching 91 in santa rosa and 93 in livermore, also 93 in morgan hill and san martin, and this is your sunday forecast, that is going to be the peak of the heat with upper 90s and triple digits, reaching 102 in fairfield. we're still in the low 70s for san francisco, so we're not going to see that much of a warm-up there. it's just the inland valleys that are going to have some sizzling temperatures, and really comparable to what we're seeing elsewhere across the south and southwest, with temperatures in phoenix headed for 113 degrees. that continues to make headlines, after seeing a lot of record high temperatures being broken there for a prolong period of time. and some of our valleys are going to be warming up, but just for a little while. take a look at napa. we're going from mid-80s to 90 and then reaching 96 degrees on sunday. if you do have some weekend outdoor plans, just be mindful

that you do need to make sure you put in breaks and also you're staying hydrated. we're going to see temperatures dipping again for early next week. on tuesday we're coming back to the upper 70s and then more seasonable weather for the rest of the week. so we are going to have a big ramp up in temperatures and then a significant fall heading into the middle of next week. it's going to go from triple digits back to the 80s, but we're not going to see as much of a heat-up in san francisco. microclimates with highs reaching into the mid-60s today and then 70s for the weekend and then back to the 60s next week as we return to our normal pattern, with a lot of clouds, fog and drizzle. cinthia has been tracking breaking news on the peninsula. >> this is southbound 280, so as more people head through south city, they're going to come across this activity going on just around the westborough boulevard off-ramp.

keep their team. this is "today in the bay." here we go, friday morning. 5:30 right now. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm kris sanchez. marcus washington has the morning off. we are going to get to traffic, but first we want to talk about the weather. >> we're starting out clear. yesterday we had the fire burning in san jose, and it made it definitely smoky and now we're seeing definitely more colorful hues to the sky as the smoke still drifts around. as you get ready to head out in pleasant hill, we're going to see temperatures in the upper 50s to start and a mix of sun and clouds throughout much of the morning, but turning clear as we go into the rest of the day, and temperatures staying mild. it will be the inland valleys where we start to notice a difference today t. so it's going to reach into the upper 80s in morgan hill, compared to the low 80s we had yesterday. upper 80s for fairfield and

concord and up to 86 in santa rosa. tomorrow much hotter while the coastal areas will stay nice and cool. we are going to see temperatures spreading out across our microclimates. we'll talk about that and some events going on this weekend. cinthia is tracking several crashes this morning. >> we'll start in the peninsula. first one came in around two hours ago now, and no delays is a good thing right now on southbound 280. the unfortunate news is that it has turned into a fatal crash and chp, the coroner, are out there investigating and getting the roadway clear. let's go up to the north bay. there is some dense fog around petaluma. we are looking at a crash with a couple of cars involved on northbound 101 at the petaluma boulevard on-ramp, just after you pass the petaluma outlets. there are a couple of lane blocks there as crews try to handle the crash and handle some of the breakdowns going on with the cars. we'll check on the build in

other parts of the bay area and keep you posted in a few minutes. >> thank you so much. developing now, crews working overnight to stop a fire from spreading further in the east san jose hills. the clayton fire broke out yesterday afternoon. so far, it has burned 60 acres, but containment is up 35%. a lot of smoke there. cal fire says around 30 homes remain threatened. no structures have been damaged so far. hopefully it remains that way. evacuation warnings, not orders, are in place for people living near three springs road. bob redell is out at the scene this morning. we'll join us with a live update in about half an hour. cleaning up san francisco streets, a big job, and city leaders addressed the crisis of crime and drugs in the city. while they did so, they get an earful at a packed town hall meeting last night. >> plus, a big statement coming from that town hall. san francisco d.a. brooke

jenkins saying the biggest roadblock is not from the people on the street, but on the bench. ginger conejero saab joins us live in studio with more. >> reporter: we've heard about a so-called revolving door between arrests and prosecution in san francisco, some people have blamed the mayor and city leadership. but not as often do we hear the problems on the street aren't getting better because of judges on the bench. san francisco d.a. jenkins says the biggest roadblock to cleaning up the fentanyl and crime crisis are the courts who let the dealers off the hook. this was a big point made last night when the community of san franciscans demanded answers in the tenderloin. from this panel, police chief bill scott, the sheriff and d.a. jenkins answered some of those questions. the d.a. telling the crowd dealers who go to trial are in and out sometimes in hours. she also says she wants repeat offenders to be detained while awaiting trial, but only 16 of

100 requests have been granted. >> they can see the same person out the next day. not because my office is failing to do its job. we're going in, filing these motions, arguing about the deadliness of fentanyl and the dangerousness of this conduct, and the judges are ignoring it. >> we are nearly where we were all of last year and we're just at the beginning of august with drug sales and arrests, and in terms of we're arresting people who are using in public. we barely did that at all last year. >> chief scott there saying arrests have been up, the help of chp and federal agencies like the dea have led to about 1,000 mostn theenderloin and sts, soma districts. meanwhile, thelic continuing to voice their outrage over what they are experiencing in their neighborhoods. they say things are becoming more and more violent. the police will continue to hear from the public today.

they are scheduled to conduct another town hall, this time virtually, at 3:00 in the afternoon, involving an officer-involved shooting on july 26th. so we'll have more on this continuing issue in the city. >> it's a big conversation and a big problem to tackle. thank you, ginger. this morning hazardous materials crews are going to continue cleaning up hazardous chemicals found in an east bay home. the chemicals were discovered in the back yard in a shed and prompted evacuations within a six-block radius of stanton avenue in san pablo. the evacuations finally lifted with the exception of five homes. those folks still out of their homes. firefighters say the homeowner died several months ago and his brother was clearing out the home when he noticed an odor and called 911. >> their safety is of utmost importance and we want to guarantee that and we're working hard to ensure that. >> 600 different chemicals were

discovered during that search. we don't know what all of them are at this point, but that investigation is still under way. 5:36 right now. happening today, the man accused of posting a deadly stabbing on facebook in san mateo will be back in court. mark mechikoff will have a plea hearing today. he's accused of killing a woman at her san mateo apartment last week. police say he filmed her final moments, then posted it to his facebook page. the district attorney says he knew the victim, but their relationship is unclear. mechikoff is being held without bail. also today, a vigil will be held later this morning to mark 78 years since the u.s. dropped atomic bombs over hiroshima and nagasaki. the dropping of the bomb ended world war ii but brought death and destruction to japan. there will be a silent vigil to honor the lives lost. the group will also honor the life of daniel elsburg and his

widow will speak at the vigil. this weekend the bay bridge series picks up again, but could it be the last one ever? we've got a live look at the oakland coliseum ahead of tomorrow's game, which is now being called sell the team saturday. instead of a rivalry, a's fans hope giants fans will join them to fill in the seats in protest of the team's potential move to las vegas. fans want the owner to sell the team instead of moving them out of oakland. they will be giving out free rally towels to fans outside of the ballpark and it looks like it should be a pretty big turnout. around 30,000 tickets have already been sold ahead of saturday's game, 16,000 sold so far for sunday. today is the great american outdoors day and that means the national park service is offering free entrance to more than 400 national parks to celebrate the anniversary of the great american outdoors act. the act was passed in 2020 and

provides funding to improve infrastructure and expand recreation opportunities in national parks and other public lands. this includes free entrance to parks like joshua tree and yosemite. >> can you say road trip? >> let's do it. maybe heading somewhere a little cooler? >> you do want to try a park that will be cooler because there will be hot spots this weekend. how about muir woods? that's going to be a great destination as our temperatures today only reach 66 degrees, perfect hiking weather throughout the weekend, with sunshine and highs reaching into the low 70s. mornings will be cool, starting out in the low 50s. we talked about this, the bay bridge series, this time at the oakland arena -- or coliseum, i should say. we're going to see temperatures in the upper 70s at first pitch and it's going to be a little bit warm, especially under all of that sunshine, but it will be cooling down as we go into the afternoon and that breeze picks up. also, we have the fremont

festival of the arts happening this weekend. tomorrow it's going to start out mild, and you probably want to get there early. it will be in the mid-60s as we go throughout the day, headed for about 80 degrees. still pretty nice as well. some of our valleys will be warmer. take a look at the trend in napa, going from 84 degrees for today to 89 degrees on saturday, and then mid-90s on sunday, with sunshine. if the sierra is in your weekend plans, heading to south lake tahoe is going to be really nice and summer-like with temperatures in the mid-70s this afternoon, and making it into the mid-80s, the mornings chilly, dipping down to the lower 40s. we'll talk more about the heat-up and the spread in temperatures around the bay area for the weekend. cinthia is tracking some delays for your drive for the east bay. >> yeah, this starts tonight, for anybody going through the east bay, maybe up to tahoe and taking 80, this is going to close, eastbound 80 at highway 4 right around hercules. this starts tonight at 9:00 p.m.

have to go to a detention center. i.c.e. says this is a safe and humane way for people to wait. a federal judge has given the biden administration more time to adjust its immigration policies. >> scott mcgrew, the white house had told them that the rule preventing many migrants from claiming asylum was too tough. >> that's exactly right. good morning. the appeals court said a policy that required migrants who pass through mexico to apply for asylum here must apply there first, before applying in the united states. the court said that wasn't fair and it had to go. the real news this morning is the courts extended the time. it's given the biden administration time to figure out what to do instead. that policy was supposed to end today. the biden adminition, like trumpinistration before it, was trying to use thi rule to slow down the number of people claiming asylum at the border by making it harder to apply. the courts point out that's not at all what american law says. american law, the way congress

set it up, says if you make it to the border, you can apply for asylum, no strings attached. if you want to change the law, convince congress to do something about it. smaller crowds this time around as donald trump was arraigned for the third time, this time a federal court in washington, for alleged actions trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election. former president trump spoke shortly thereafter. >> this is a persecution of a political opponent, this was never supposed to happen in america. this is the persecution of the person that's leading by very substantial numbers in the republican primary and leading biden by a lot, so if you can't beat them, you persecute or prosecute them. we can't let this happen in america. >> as we watch this case move forward, it is important to remember what the indictment actually says. it says trump and six co-conspirators took actions, like setting up a panel of fake

electors, to defraud the united states and quash the true vote. actions, not words. but many defending trump are redirecting the argument, claiming the accusations are about what he said. take a listen to the speaker of the house and then a brief clip from fox news. >> you're entitled to question whether it was honest or not. that's the uniqueness of the first amendment. that's the uniqueness of america. but you know what? you shouldn't be prosecuted for your thoughts. and the difference here is when hillary clinton said it, nothing happened to her. >> he's being indicted for spreading lies, that's what the indictment says over and over again, and they insist that he knew they were lies. >> that's not at all what the indictment says. the prosecution fully acknowledges in the indictment itself, trump had the right to say whatever he wanted, he had the right like every american to speak publicly, even falsely, that there had been fraud in the election. the indictment also acknowledges trump had every right to take the elections to court, to audit

the result, all free speech. but, kris, not to take fraudulent action. >> thank you very much, scott. august is childrens' cancer awareness month, and this morning we are focusing on how nuclear medicine diagnostic scans are helping to treat children. a small amount of radioactive drug allows doctors to see inside childrens' bodies and those scans can help diagnose lymphoma, thyroid and bone cancer. it can help doctors plan treatments, like evaluating how cancer is responding to treatments. a pediatric physician at stanford tells us this method is safe and can improve the quality of life for children. >> physicians are very happy with the results that are occurring in these new techniques and the parents of these children and the children

themselves are noticing these different effects and the improvement that we can see. >> doctor nadel adds the scans can help manage ongoing care by early detection of cancer when it comes back. 5:49 right now. shoppers beware. inspectors in the north bay have discovered some safeway stores have been overcharging customers. during recent visits by the division of weights and measures, inspectors found produce, dairy, even detergent overcharged. at one store haas avocados were supposed to be 4 for $4 but rang up for $12 instead. at another safeway eggplant was rung up $5 more than the listed price. the division of weights and measures says customers can dispute charges as soon as they find them. we reached out to safeway for comment but have not heard back.

we are looking live outside at san jose as the sun is starting to come up over the south bay, and it's going to get a little toasty. we should enjoy today, right, kari? >> yes, it's going to start to warm up in some of the inland valleys and the valleys will be the only place where we do see a big change in temperatures for the weekend. it's staying nice and mild for the coastline and inner bay. today we're headed for 66 degrees in san jose, 73 in oakland, and mid-80s in martinez. notice how the temperatures change tomorrow, reaching into the mid-90s in concord, 96 in fairfield and 91 in santa rosa. meanwhile, san francisco is still in the 60s and low 70s for sunday. we're starting to see triple digits in the inland east bay and some upper 90s for the south county. looking for something to do this evening, the music on the square happens in redwood city this friday -- or this evening at 6:00. it will be at about 70 degrees, but also in the night sky don't forget to look up.
