happy friday to you. it is 6:42 right now, as you head out in mountain view. it's going to be partly to mostly cloudy, temperatures in the upper 50s. it's going to be a really nice day ahead. as the sky clears, we head for the low 70s and a breezy wind picks up and drops temperatures once again for the evening. mild here, but heating up in the valleys. we'll talk about that in the full microclimate forecast. let's go to the north bay and check out how things are moving over san rafael. traffic picking up a little southbound as you approach the civic center. very light around the north bay. highway 37 to 580, less than a ten-minute commute, while people moving over to sonoma boulevard will have a 24-minute drive. we'll check out other drive times coming up.

a federal judge has given the biden administration more time to adjust its immigration policies. >> scott mcgrew joins us now. the court had told the white house its ruling preventing a lot of migrants from claiming asylum was too tough. >> they said the policy that required migrants who pass through mexico to apply for asylum there first, before applying in the united states, wasn't fair. the court said it had to go. the news this morning, the court has extended the time it has given the biden administration to figure out what to do instead. the policy was supposed to end today. the biden administration, like the trump administration before it, was trying to use that rule to slow down the number of people claiming asylum at the border by simply making it harder to apply. but the courts pointed out that's not what american law says. american law, the way congress set it up, says if you make it to the border, you can apply for asylum, no strings attached. if you want to change the law, the court said convince congress

to do something about it. smaller crowds this time around as donald trump was arraigned for the third time, this time in federal court in washington for his alleged actions trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election. former president trump spoke shortly thereafter. >> this is a persecution of a political opponent. this was never supposed to happen in america. >> now, as we watch this case move forward, it's important to remember what the indictment actually says. it says trump and six co-conspirators took actions, like setting up panels of fake electors to defraud the united states and quash the true vote. actions, not words. but many defending trump are redirecting the argument, claiming the accusations are about what trump said. here is an example. take a listen to the speaker of the house and a brief clip from fox news. >> you're entitle to do question whether it was honest or not. that's the uniqueness of the first amendment.
6:46 am
that's the uniqueness of america. but you know what, you shouldn't be prosecuted for your thoughts. and the difference here is when hillary clinton said it, nothing happened to her. >> he's being indicted for spreading lies, that's what the indictment says over and over again, and they insist that he knew they were lies. >> well, that's not at all what the indictment says. the prosecution in the indictment itself fully acknowledges trump had the right to say whatever he wanted, he had a right like every american, it says, to speak publicly, to speak falsely, he had that right, that there had been fraud during the election, that he had won the election. the indictment also acknowledges trump had every right to take the election results to court, audit the results, all free speech. but not, laura, to take fraudulent action. >> so interesting to follow all of this history as its unfolding. 6:46 right now. new at 6:00, hollywood writers are scheduled to return to the negotiation table today.

based on statements from yesterday, it doesn't sound that promising. the writers guild of america sent a letter to members challenging studios to abandon an anti-union playbook and come prepared to offer a fair deal. the studios fired back saying the wga bargaining rhetoric is unfortunate, our only playbook is getting people back to work. workers have been on strike for more than two months. august is childrens' cancer awareness month and we're focusing on now nuclear medicine diagnostic scans are helping to treat children. a small amount of radioactive drug allows doctors to see inside the child's body. the scans can diagnose things like lymphoma, thyroid and bone cancers and can help doctors plan treatments, along with evaluating how the cancer is responding to those treatments. dr. nadal is a pediatric physician at stanford and tells us this method is safe and can also improve the quality of life for patients.
6:48 am
>> referring physicians that use these are very happy with the results that are occurring in these new techniques and the parents of these children and the children themselves are noticing these different effects and the improvement that we can see. >> dr. nadel adds the scans can help manage ongoing care by early detection of that cancer coming back. trending this morning, vanessa bryant honored her late husband and her daughter, gianna at the taylor swift concert. >> on her instagram page she posted pictures of her jean jacket bedazzled. the back has a photo of swift and kobe bryant on stage during the 1989 world tour back in 2015. she also joined the trend of

making friendship bracelets. kobe bryant had praised taylor swift's career and his daughters have been long-time swifties. >> there's a patch on the front, too, with one of taylor swift's lyrics, "say you'll remember me" on the front, too. >> very meaningful. there's been so many celebrities going to her concerts. >> they're the ones who can afford it. we know it's expensive, but everybody who spent the money said it was totally worth it. >> i felt like i went. >> we made it through. maybe next time. it's going to be hot in the valleys. the good thing is that not everyone is going to have to deal with high heat this weekend. we're keeping it mild for the coast and parts of the inner bay. we start out with low clouds over san rafael as we take a look at our live camera. it looks like a great start to our day. as we're making plans based on the weather, you want to get out there early and get in those

here is where you'll find much cooler temperatures, along the coastline you may be looking for something to check out. the dog surfing competition will be happening in pacifica, in the upper 50s to start. only peeks of sunshine as the fog lingers and highs in the low 60s. compare that to fairfield, hitting 100 degrees on sunday. that will be the peak of the heat and then we do see temperatures dipping again for early next week. the good thing is that the heat doesn't stick around long. we see it for a couple of days. it does continue into monday with mid-90s in the valleys, then we're back in the mid-80s, which is about normal for early august. we'll see san francisco's temperatures in the low to mid-70s for the weekend and you may enjoy a little more sunshine for the next couple of days. cinthia, you're looking at the bay bridge. >> yeah, we're going to start from above and i'll show you why looks can be a little deceiving as people make their way around the berkeley curve. we have two issues going on, over the bay bridge and then as

people try to make their way through oakland. we've talked about the crashes on southbound 880. let's go into san francisco and what's backing up the traffic there as people make their way off of the bridge. we have a new crash that came up, westbound 80 at the 8th street off-ramp, blocking the left lane. they're trying to move everything to the right-hand shoulder so that traffic can keep moving. the issue on 880 is on the clearing stages after some of the liquid had dripped on the road, but otherwise looking like a bay area friday light through most of the roadways. we just have our typical build over the altamont pass. back to you. >> thank you very much. it is 6:51 right now. happening now, bad blood in the bay area, after taylor swift went over curfew. but it's not against the pop star. mercury news reports santa clara is issuing a $2,000 fine against the company that set off fireworks at the end of her shows last week. the fireworks went off past the 11:00 p.m. curfew. no fines have been issued

against taylor swift, but if santa clara does choose to fine her for going over, the san francisco 49ers would have to foot the bill because they actually manage the stadium. next, a quick look at our top stories that include firefighters working overnight to stop that brush fire in the south bay from spreading. the latest on containment as homes remain under threat. first, here is hoda kotb. >> coming up on "today," an inside look at simone biles' highly anticipated return to competitive gymnastics this weekend. we'll be there live and talk about what it could mean for about what it could mean for next introducucing togo's's new frech dip p sandwicheses.

care. police have not said whether they have made any arrests in that shooting. a big statement from the san francisco d.a., brooke jenkins says the biggest roadblock to cleaning up the fentanyl and crime crisis in the city are the courts letting the dealers off the hook. at a town hall in the tenderloin last night, jenkins said dealers who go to trial are in and out in sometimes just hours. jenkins also went on to tell the crowd that her office wants to detain repeat offenders while they await their trial, but only 16 out of 100 requests to do so have been granted. san francisco police are scheduled to have another town hall this afternoon, this time in response to an officer-involved shooting that happened in the bay view on july 26th. this weekend the bay bridge series picks up again and it could be the last one ever. this is a live look at the oakland coliseum ahead of tomorrow's game, being dubbed sell the team saturday. instead of the rivalry, a's fans hope that giants fans will join
