sunny but, wow, hazy out there as we look over san jose on this first saturday of august. thank you so much for starting it with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel joins us with your microclimate forecast and that hazy sunny look, any indication, going to be a hot one. >> going to about hot one. as you were saying, first weekend of august, but we like to call it fogust in the weather center. looking at san francisco blanketed by the dense fog. headed over the golden gate bridge or closer to the coastline, noth fog also drizzle out there this morning. hanging on over parts of san rafael and novato and chilly, low 50s in the north bay. yes, spectacular sunshine over san jose to greet us on this saturday. we are headed for a warm weekend. so as we go to our temperatures, we're keeping it in the 60s and 780s near the coast. low 80s, a little further through the coastline, and 90s

making our way inland. not peak of the heat. that's tomorrow. walk you through all the anybodies coming up in our full microclimate in about 15 minutes. >> thanks, cinthia. see you soon. get updated weather forecasts and timelines for your neighborhood this weekend by downloading our nbc bay area app. as always, free and tell you what cinthia said about peak of the heat. we have developing news this morning. a mystery unfolding at a bay area apartment complex where two people wnd authorities are searching for their killer. it happened yesterday morning in san jose at the vista apartment complex on parkmore avenue off interstate 280. officers made the discovery during a welfare check. when police went in to the apartment they discovered two bodies. for most of the day, that area was closeds off for investigation, and late last night residents were allowed back into their complex. it's not yet confirmed, but neighbors we spoke with say one

of the victims is a child. >> a little boy, rode his bike back and forth and stuff. wave at us. >> if it is that little boy, by condolences go out to, like, family. >> police confirmed the other victim is an adult. as a safety measure that complex is under 24-hour security. investigators say they do not yet know a motive for the killings or how they died. these two deaths are san jose's 23rd and 24th homicides of the year. turning now to police investigating a sexual assault at an east bay b.a.r.t. station. b.a.r.t. police say a rape was reported at the concord station parking garage yesterday morning. investigators say a juvenile was detained in connection with the attack. they are looking at b.a.r.t. surveillance video and searching for witnesses. anyone with information is asked to call b.a.r.t. police. a world-class mixed martial

don gilly enjoying doing that middle of the bay. >> it's exhilarating swimming in the water. >> reporter: what's happening in the water here at brookly marina has the attention of this man. >> had a forest fire but in the water. no one could see it. only way to see it, dead fish getting to shore occasionally. >> reporter: these photos captured of five dead fish three weeks a way from peak bloom of last year that killed hundreds of fish in the bay and oakland's make merit which he helped document. the specific algae around the bay 20 years but last year the first sizable bloom with major impact. >> seeing the surge come up last year, like watching redwoods burn. these organisms live to be over 100 years old. >> reporter: so far seen impacts of this year's algae bloom in the berkeley areas and sturgeons and other fish like bass die and pushed to the point.

the size of last year, year over year. >> might be talking about localized extinction event for some of these organisms. >> reporter: they'll be watching. >> ocean is under assault, including here. >> reporter: also we learned a treated wastewater, a huge contributory blooms in the bay. he says if we get that under control we'd be in better shape moving forward. reporting for nbc bay area news. happening today, a rally to call attention to our climate in cries. the citizen climate lobby group hopes the event will inform younger people about climate change. the events starts at 2:30 in san mateo central park. a recent study finds nearly 70% of people under 18 are most likely to b clite change is a global emergency. studies show that eco

anxiety is increasing, particularly among theyoung. a 2021 global study of 10,000 young people in 10 countries found more than 50% felt sad, angry andowerless about climate change. 45% said their feelings negatively affected their daily lives. also happening today, hundreds of migrants and allies will walk 40 miles in solidarity. it's called "the all-in for registry walk." it has two starting points. san jose and petaluma. both end at the federal building in san francisco monday. organize others say it's been 40 years of congressional inaction on immigration reform. they're calling on congress to update the registry bill, which would seek 8 million undocumented people eligible for residency. the marches both start at 8:00 this morning. in lighter news, new this morning, hanks the tank has been

captured. you may remember that 500-pound female bear that gained attention after breaking into at least 21 homes in southlake tahoe? the california department of fish and wildlife say the large black bear was safely caught earlier yesterday morning along with her three cubs. she will be transported to a wild animal sanctuary in colorado. as for the three young cubs who took part in some of those home break-ins as well, potentially moved to sonoma county wildlife rescue in hopes they can put their life of crime behind them and be returned to the wild. 7:10. much more on "today in the bay." coming up, local missionaries trapped in west africa. they are finally on their way home to the bay area. hear from their family now celebrating.

cummings skyway in crockett. it closed around 9:00 last night and won't reopen until 5:00 a.m. monday. caltrans is doing repaving work. the agency recommends describers use 680 or 780 as alternate routes. this is the second of several planned closures for that stretch of road. a little taste of italy coming to san jose. the italian-american harriet of foundation hosting this year's italian family fiesta today and tomorrow. the free family friendly event includes live music, authentic food and even grape stomping. the event is recognized as the best "eat" in the bay area. the two-day event begins at 11:00 a.m. in history park. all proceeds go towards helping the foundation's scholarship program. happening today, bay area nonprofits samaritan house holding a backpack drive in san mateo. the organization that looks to

fight poverty says they plan on handing out more than 3,000 backpacks filled with school supplies. the drive at the san mateo event center begins asinine this morning and a drive-thru style format. those who get backpacks have to be registered with the samaritan house. today the world dog surfing championships will take over lind mar beach in pacifica. thousands gather to watch the four-legged pups surf stars take to the water. the winner will receive the golden surfing award. the competition begin it's a 9:00 this morning and also a dog fashion show competition as well as adoptions. if you haven't heard, the mega millions jackpot grown to an estimated $1.5 billion after no one won last night's drawing. there have been 31 straight drawings without a winner. the next drawing is tuesday. if someone hits the jackpot and

7:30 as we take a live look outside. the sun's shining over sfo, but san francisco's signature clouds and fog in the backgrounds there. looks like we have quite a bit of microclimate waking up on this first weekend of august. thank you so much for starting it with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel joins us with a peek at your microclimate forecast and the fog is no indication of the heat that's to come. >> oh, yeah. that is definitely to come. it will also mix out at the coast. as we go through middle parts of the day and people head out there, a little bit more sunshine, but start out in the tri-valley. good morning out in livermore. already seeing that sunshine and the temperatures starting to warm up. also down here in san jose, this beautiful sunrise warming us up to 60 degrees now at 7:30. going to san francisco, 55 degrees with that fog over the golden gate bridge. just be careful with visibility as we see patchy fog through parts of the bay. a look at temperatures. we have a range in our

likely cost 50,000 in the coming months to ensure a smooth transition. those costs include modifications to their home, their car. money for rehab, education and 24-hour care. asa is one of at least seven children who have been shot on bay area freeways in the last few years. police have not said whether they have made any arrests in that shooting. new financial fallout for another bay area diocese on the heels of the catholic clergy sex abuse scandal. the archdiocese of san francisco announced it likely will file for bankruptcy as it faces more than 500 child sex abuse lawsuits. archbishop says filing for chapter 11 allows the diocese to deal with the cases collectively as opposed to one at a time and bankruptcy allowing it to reorganize finances continuing to offer both oakland and santa

rosa diocese, they've already filed for bankruptcy protection. in an open letter archbishop cordileone was deeply saddened bybu of children and stressed that the vast majority of alleged abuse occurred decades ago, but recent reporting by our nbc bay investigative units uncovered new accusations against several san francisco priests. still in ministry. victim advocacy and support groups blasted yesterday's announcement saying the wave of bankrupts is about protecting secrets and reducing payments to abused victims. turning now to police in new york city restoring calm after a riot broke out in manhattan's union square neighborhood. a crowd estimated at 2,000 people descended into the area after a popular social media influencer advertised a video game giveaway. police quickly moved in mass working to regain control block by block.

nbc's ron allen has this report. >> reporter: mayhem in manhattan with police saying at least 2,000 people mobbing union square getting on top of cabs and entrance to a subway. pushing, shoving, throwing objects as police eventually move in. >> a lot of people. went ober there, it's like, yikes. like a crowd. like -- i was not, i don't know how to explain it. >> reporter: were you scared? >> kind of panicking. >> reporter: nypd says it began after a social media influencer planned an event to give away playstations at 4:00 this afternoon. >> decided to come not knowing what to expect or whatever. >> reporter: by 3:30, hundreds had people already gathered. >> crowd swarmed influencer finally arrived at the park. individuals in the park began to commit acts of violence towards the police and the public. >> everybody was throwing everything. climbing things. >> reporter: nypd declaring a

level 4 mobilization, and hundreds of police officers were quickly on the scene. at one point pulling someone out of the crowd. >> what did you see? >> there, people started throwing stuff. blocks, cans, everything. and then as we're walking away hear a big thud. >> and we just heard another loud bang. seems like a firework went off. >> after numerous warnings, hit with rocks, bottles and other debris started to make arrests. >> reporter: now the social media influencer is in cust. former president donald trump delivered remarks while attending a dinner hosted by the alabama republican party yesterday. this was trump's first campaign event after his arraignment for charges of participating in criminal conspiracies to subvert the 2020 presidential election results. he pleaded not guilty to multiple felonies related to the presidential election results.

during his remarks yesterday, trump touched on the indictments noting that every time one is filed he goes "way up in the polls". >> we need one more indictment to close out this election. one more indictment at this election, it is closed out. nobody has even a chance. we've already defeated the republicans. >> the former president promised alabama residents that if he is elected back in office he will turn the economy back around and undo all of president biden's regulations that he claimed have harmed alabama workers and workers all across the united states. so what is next for the former president? the justice department wants to move quickly on this latest case. the judge says she intends to set a trial date at the hearing later this month. but what abouthe other two cases? the criminal trial into the hush money case in new york begins on

march 25th of next year. that's just weeks after ser tuesday. and may 20th of next year, the federal criminal trial in the classified documents case begins. trump's legal team is expected continue pushing to delay all three trials until after the 2024 presidential election. now to a follow-up in san pablo where people are now back in their homes after they were evacuated for three days after hazardous materials were found at a nearby home. firefighters say they processed most of the chemicals found in a shed in the home's backyard. the initial discovery made wednesday by the brother of a self-proclaimed chemist. firefighters say that chemist died several months ago. his brother was clearing out the home when he noticed an odor and called 911. authorities evacuated hundreds of neighbors as they cleaned up. most of them were able to return home by thursday night.

600 different chemicals were discovered during that search. the federal government launched a new website on monday to help people save on their student loans. under a new plan devised by president biden's administration, some borrowers could see their monthly payments drop to nothing while others save money over the course of the loan's lifetime. our reporter xpla explains how works. >> reporter: seeing all options for paying off student loans when payments resume in october. one option, the new safe plan. >> for most borrowers, they will see an overall lower payment plan than they paid before. >> reporter: kim miller was lutheran social services says the safe plan looks at borrower's income and family size to determine how low they're required monthly payment should be. on the lower end, that number is zero dollar as month. miller says that means borrowers

on the plan can sign up, not pay anything and still avoid racking up interest on their student loans. >> offering a lower repayment plan option is not for everybody, but it can be helpful especially right now for people who are just looking for a way to ease back into their repayments. >> reporter: miller says the safe plan also has a forgiveness component to it after several years of making payments, borrowers will have their remaining balance forgiven. even if the payments are zero dollar as month. miller says the politicians process is also more convenient than ever. borrowers can apply in less than ten minutes and don't have to reapply every year with new information. because the website can now access your tax returns to see which plans and benefits you qualify for. >> and we are just encouraging people to, to take a look. you know? a lot of people avoiding, looking at their student loans for good reason. it can seem really overwhelming, but there are a lot of different options now. >> that was gordon serverensen.
