today from a line of severe storms that swept through the east coast at one point more than a million people were without power. take a look at this video out of maryland. people trapped in their cars as destructive winds snapped power lines and poles right on to a busy highways. >> 15-year-old from north carolina died after he was crushed by a falling tree and a 28-year-old man died in alabama after he was struck by lightning. there's new risk of severe weather today in new england, central plains and in the southeast, where damaging winds even tornadoes are possible. >> let's begin with nbc news reporter gary grumbach. you're if the same place that slid owe was that we just showed with the downed power lines, how is the cleanup going? >> reporter: cleanup is low and methodical. crews here have been working since 5:00 p.m. yesterday. they'll get off in about two

hours i'm told. they've been working nonstop to get this place cleaned up. the pole on the ground there, about two hours ago that was up there tangled in those wires. so they're bringing down all of the wires, all of the problematic poles and this is part of the place where you saw that video. there are 35 cars that look just like this, all the way down the street here, you can see pole after pole, they're working on chopping them up as we speak, amazingly nobody was seriously injured in any of these poles come crashing down, there was no tornado here, this was strong wind, strong rain and nothing else. we're seeing that coming up through the northeast as well, but right now, 50,000 people without power here in maryland. the governor of maryland said he's going to get this street

open and others quickly as possible. >> michelle, what should people be watching for over the next 24 hours? >> most of the mid-atlantic and northeast doing fine right now, we're also watching the southeast, a whole different system, where we could see some strong storms. 7 million people at risk. right now, damaging winds, 60 miles per hour, that can bring down trees and power lines and large hail. could see a few tornadoes. the best spots for tornadoes would be out of the rockies and into the high plains. then it extends throughout the mississippi valley and the southeast, jackson and montgomery could see strong storms. we're seeing a few drenching storms right now.

brighter colors is where we're looking at the heaviest rain. tomorrow, that number grows to 15 million, shifted further to the east, parts of the midwest the ohio valley into the tennessee valley the mississippi valley even portions of the southeast once again, the same scenario we're looking at winds gusting to 60 miles per hour and also the chance of a few tornadoes. not just in the plains, not just in the high plains the rockies, we're talking about new england. up to 4 inches and 2 inches per hour in those places. back to you. all right, gary and michelle, thank you both. right now, thousands of city workers are striking in los angeles. for the first time in 40 years city sanitation workers heavy duty mechanics and even traffic officers among others walked off the job. we're in downtown l.a., erin, talk to us about what you're

hearing from people and seeing in. >> reporter: thousands of city workers this particular unit the first time in more than 40 years they have gone on strike, a strike that's expected to last 24 hours. they just wrapped up a march through the streets. a number of vacancies here in los angeles pushing many of these workers into overtime, they're also alleging that the city is negotiating in bad faith. this particular strike is building on a summer of discontent in los angeles, with writers and actors striking, restaurant workers striking. >> it's not just here in los angeles it's throughout the country. workers are fed up. they're tired, they don't make enough money, many workers are one paycheck away from being

homeless themselves. we have workers in city of los angeles that don't make $15 an hour. you have to make $33 an hour to be able to afford a one-bedroom apartment, how in the world can our workers keep up that way? >> reporter: now this particular strike action is impacting a number of services across the city today. from sanitation to the airports, even some public pools are closed, ellison. >> erin the mayor of los angeles also responded to the strike, what is she saying about negotiations? >> reporter: this union was adamant they're going to shut down the city the mayor said the impact o this will be mitigated he said the city hl is working -- she also said that she's negotiating in good faith saying, quote, my office is implementing a plan ensure no public safety or housing

rally since being indicted on charges in the 2020 election case the former president is in new hampshire today this as lawyers battle with prosecutors over protective order. they're fighting over limits about what evidence in the case about the 2020 election can be shared publicly. the judge overseeing that case wants a hearing some time this week, meanwhile the federal grand jury which indicted the former president last week in that case met again today, it indicates the special counsel's investigation is still ongoing. vaughn hillyard is out in new hampshire, in a noisy room, vaughn, what is the former president saying about the charges? >> reporter: this is for donald trump defiance, kate, for donald trump he can only control so much what happens in the courtroom or these various motions, that's left to his legal counsel, he's making the case that a protective order against him would limit his free speech to talk openly about the case that's pending before him

and thursday. workers from the airport, libraries, the planning department, animal shelters, happy hollow park and zoo all joined in solidarity with engineers and emergency dispatchers. the head of the labor council says the mayor is not doing enough to avert this strike. the mayor says it comes down to higher wages for workers or services for residents. >> you cannot generate revenue without a functioning planning department. you cannot keep libraries and parks open without employees. >> the numbers are what they are. we can do a 5% raise, 3% additional weeks of paid parental lee. if we want to go farther, we're going to have to identify cuts that aren't going to be popular. >> the union wants a 7%, 6% then aise over the next four

years in salary. the negotiations include paid family leave and retirement. you will see some workers outside san jose city hall and the airport, libraries. if you have business with the city like you need a permit or something, you're going to want to take care of that before next tuesday. you may also see workers picketing outside the san jose police department. we want to make clear, police, firefighters, dispatchers cannot strike because of their own contract agreements. the open session of the city council meeting is this afternoon at 1:30. we expect to see a lot of san jose city workers there as well. >> thank you. our other top story out of san carlos. a home depot security guard shoots a robbery suspect after a fight at 10:00 last night. the guard confronted the suspect who they thought was

shoplifting. this turned into a fight. during the fight, sheriff's deputies say he got a hold of the baton, hit the guard on the head and threw it into a glass window. the guard then fired two shots, one of them hitting the suspect. a sheriff's deputy happened to be near by and heard the gunshots. he arrived on scene and called for help. officers arrested macky and the sheriff's office is investigating. we'll have a full report in our afternoon and evening newscasts. here's meteorologist kari hall with a look at our forecast. >> look at our temperatures today. it's going to be a really nice one for all our of microclimates as we get a cooldown but it's going to be chilly along the coastline and in san francisco. that's providing relief from the

been arrested and charged of making terrorististic threats. the suspect allegedly made these threats to his sister. the mother also overheard a phone conversation in which her son was allegedly trying to purchase an ar-15 illegally. breaking news out of the supreme court, the justices have ruled that the biden administration can enforce new regulations on so-called ghost guns, these are firearms that are sold in kits in pieces to put together. the new regulations will require sellers of the kits to obtain licenses. academy award winnering sandra bullock's longtime partner bryan randall has died.

he kept his journey with als private. they add they're immensely grateful to the doctors and nurses who helped them over the past three years and are asking for privacy to grieve. the fbi agent leading the investigation of an accused of serial rapist is speaking exclusively with nbc news. this case broke open last week after a woman escaped a sirnd block cell in an oregon home. she was kidnapped and sexually assaulted. the suspect has been linked to violent assaults in at least four other states. nbc news justice and intelligence correspondent den dilanian got the exclusive interview with the fbi, what did the agent tell you about where the investigation stands as well as finding other potential victims? >> you know the fbi normally doesn't talk about pending investigations but they did in this case because they believe there are multiple victims who

have yet to come forward. the man accused in this case, posed as a police officer and detained that woman last week in seattle, then drove her hundreds of miles to his home in portland raping her multiple times along the way, they arrested him after she was able to break out of that makeshift cell in his garage. they say he lived in ten states over the last decade from california to new york, so they believe there may be many more victims, stephanie shark the assistant special agent in charge of the portland field office is urging them to come forward. >> he had a tendency to target people who would about come guard and he exercised free in order to keep people silent and now he's in custody we're trying to help these victims rewrite their stories so they can come forward and be truthful of what they experienced without fear.

>> he went by several aliases they're asking anyone with information to call 1-800-call-fbi. nbc news reached out to his lawyer but didn't heard back. >> the suspect was on an episode of "judge judys at at one point. >> con 's the about on that show in 2018 in an episode about a dispute with his domestic partner, who later accused of domestic violence in 2020, the fbi said they're investigating whether she knew about the cell in the garage, kate. >> ken, thank you. we have some breaking news now about that viral brawl in montgomery, alabama, this afternoon police announced three of the men involved in that fight are being charged with misdemeanor assault, it all started with a worker in the white shirt, it was a man -- you

don't see him in this video, a man walked up and asked a group to move their boats so his ferry could dock this and then all-out melee erupted. you see the man if the white shirt now. some people online are saying it was also racially motivated. . montgomery police chief disputes that. authorities are looking to charge more people they say were involved in that incident. two of dancers suing lizzo are sharing their side of what they said happened while working with the pop star. they joined our partners at sky news for a virtual interview. let's bring in steven romo with more on this. steven, what exactly did these former dancers have to say? >> reporter: ellison, we heard quite a bit back and forth from the parties in this case. in this new interview with sky news, dancers there talked about the broader need of transparency

particularly in the entertainment industry, plaintiffs also addressed lizzo's response, her denial to these allegations, it felt like victim blaming to them. they also addressed just the allegations listed in this lawsuit. so many of them. sexual hear rasment, hostile workplace, religious harassment. racial discrimination. this sounds outlandish because it's outlandish as it sounds. they say what went on was unacceptable. they felt the need to come forward. they spoke more. >> our biggest reason in coming forward with this is to just kind of give people a voice and let them know that you can stand up for yourself and speak out to no matter the caliber of artist
