wildfires ravage the island of maui. overnight the confirmed deaths shoots higher. we will have an update on evacuations. smoke from a fire in oakland blanketing surrounding communities. we have a new warning this morning for residents on where that fire stands this morning. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. thank you for allowing us to be part of your morning. i am marcus washington. >> i am laura garcia. we will check the commute in just a bit, but kari how are we looking for today? >> it looks nice for today and we are monitoring the air quality, and we have a lot of kids heading back to school today, including in san josé where we are starting out with clouds overhead and temperatures in the upper 50s. as we go throughout the morning we will see temperatures starting to warm up a bit.
5:02 am
the sky will clear out and we will see another really nice day. it will be in the upper 70s at lunchtime today, and reaching 79 for an afternoon high. oakland reaching 71 degrees, and low 80s in santa rosa. we are cooler than normal for now, but as we go through the rest of the forecast, it eventually will start to heat up just a little bit. nice and mild tomorrow, but saturday we will see the temperatures cranking up in the inland valleys and upper 80s. mike, now you have a traffic alert in the south bay? >> this is a crash that happened at 4:00 in the morning in mountain view. you see the green sensors, and chp notified us that this is a deadly crash. one vehicle is crushed, and there must be more damage to the other vehicles. this is on a flyover, on the left side there's a flyover for

you can see everything basically across from where i was standing, and it looke burned out and smoke. >> you may be wondering to do if you are planning a vacation there, or if this happens wherever you are going? chris chmura has some answers, and so stick around for that. you can see right here hazardous smoke is in the air and can be smelt for miles. >> bob redell is live, and any ideas where this fire will be out? >> reporter: this fire is expected to burn throughout the day. we don't know what time that

means, if it's going to burn into the afternoon or evening, but it will not be put out anytime soon according to the battalion chief. you can see why the bay area air quality district issued an air quality advisory in that area. the smoke particles could travel down to the south bay. the fire department contained it to a single pile of debris. we know overnight a crane on site has been moving piles presumably to get to the source of the fire. close your doors and windows if you smell smoke, and avoid the area around the square.

happy first day of school for the students and staff at santa clara unified. it's going to start out in the morning at drop off time in the upper 50s. it will be a cool start to the day with a few clouds overhead. eventually it clears out and we will head for 80 degrees by the time the last school bell rings. we will get a look at all the microclimates coming up. good morning. happy thursday to you. today is the big day for inflation data. we will get to that in a second. disney said it lost half a billion from streaming in the most recent quarter. remember, a quarter is three months so that's more than $5 million a day. as you might imagine, disney is raising prices on disney plus by a lot.
