we will get to the breaking news for you in a bit, but first we want to get a look at the forecast for you. kari hall has been monitoring what i happening >> we were taking a look at how far hurricane dora is away from the hawn islands. as we monitor those itions, it will be clear and breezy with a northwesterly wind at 10 to 20 miles per hour. we are monitoring the air quality from the port of oakland fire. it will be unhealthy for sensitive groups, especially in that surrounding area. we will continue to monitor that for the alameda area, oakland hills and moraga a fremont and san josé.

are pitching a desperate battle to try and save more lives and property. there's new video overnight to show you giving us a better idea of the devastation of what has now been called three separate fires. at this point entire neighborhoods destroyed including the historic island of lahaina. authorities expect the number of deaths, sadly, to climb higher. right now there's no estimate on the number of people injured. people with plans to visit the island are now being advised to stay away. the state's lieutenant governor is calling this a critical moment for everybody on the island. >> it's really about the community coming together, and it's this time that we will see what hawaii is all about. >> the reason it spread so fast is there were reports of gusts

up to 85 miles per hour, so you know, that is so fast. that's why the county had such a hard time doing the containment of the fire, and because the winds were so high we could not provide the helicopters. >> the fires are being fanned in part by strong winds from hurricane dora which is now a category 4 strength. some bay area visitors evacuating from maui are already returning to bay area airports. >> our director of broadcasts is there, and he said the power in his resort went out two days ago. he says the damage is devastating. >> we went and we saw the lahaina area, and you could bet,

it was just devastating. looking across the water, there were five or six helicopters dipping buckets into the water trying to put flames out. smoke was everywhere. you could see everywhere across from where i was standing, and it looked like it was burned and smoked out. >> if you are wondering what to do if something like this happens whenever you are going. chris chmura has more for us later. a massive fire at a steel recycling plant in the port of oakland is still burning at this hour. you can see that live picture right there. it's still sending hazardous smoke into the air. it can be smelled for miles.

and bob redell joins us in the east bay this morning. are you getting a better idea of when this could be out? >> reporter: overnight a battalion chief told a photographer on the scene that they expect the fire to burn throughout the day. take a look at the video. you can see why the bay area air quality management issued a air quality advisory in that area because of the large plume of smoke headed in the southward direction. the smoke particles could travel all the way down to the south bay. as far as the smoke is concerned, the air quality management district is advisorying people to protect their health by closing windows and doors if you smell smoke. avoid the area of jack london square. we spoke to a man on his way to dinner in that area last night. >> a lot of chemicals.

fremont here, a live look shows the headlights heading south past tesla towards the nimitz. things are moving smoothly mostly throughout the south bay. there's one alert, coming up. today is a big day for inflation day and we will get to that in a second. disney lost half a billion from streaming in the first quarter, and a quarter is three months and that's $5 million a day. as you might imagine, disney is raising pluses on disney plus and hulu by a lot. and then ups and the teamsters union reached a tentative deal with pay raises, and the two sides expect the new contract to be ratified by the end of the

it was your family and you were here, what would you do? he said, i would head home, brother. he's, like, go that way. >> this is what going that way looked like, which was heading north. cars backed up while flames drew near. officials said over 270 structures have been damaged or destroyed. dozens of people injured. this morning, as mentioned, the death toll has climbed to at least 36. last night the death toll was at six. the fear this morning and the rest of today is there will be the discovery of many more and that number will continue to climb. a number of airlines, alaska, hawaiian, southwest airlines, they have added flights to help get people out of maui, and we heard from united that said they are canceling inbound flights to

the airport so planes can fly empty going to maui so they are able to get people out and help with the evacuations. that's the latest here from sfo. back to you in the studio. >> thank you very much, ginger. i was going to say it's going to be a long road to recovery, but that island will never be the same again. there was not much of a warning because dora was so far away. over 700 miles away and it was a category 4. we had an area of high pressure that created high winds. dora continues to move away, and some of the islands are still getting gusts around 30 miles per hour today. the weather conditions are slightly improving, and we know with out-of-control fires they can create their own environment.

there could be less of a wind today, and some of the gusts will reach 30 miles per hour and slightly humidity ranging from 48 to 85%. we will continue to monitor that throughout the day. back here at home, we will get a look at the first day of forecast as well as weekend events coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. we want to head back to hawaii, because within the first hours of the first flames entire parts of lahaina were destroyed, and now some of the first before and after images providing a look at the devastation there. we have been telling you all of the historic town is gone. you can see the before, and this is the after here. this is on front street, as you can see. it's a beautiful area. lahaina, mostly reduced to ashes, and locals fearing that area will never be the same

l.a. unified are asking the district not to wait until there's a tragedy to force some sort of effective change. that request took on more urgency as several threat-related lockdowns and gun related incidents happened towards the end of last year. just weeks before the last day of school, alow glen stude wa found a ghost gun that was loaded, and then weeks before that a student threatened to shoot classmates with an assault rifle. parents called on san josé unified for more transparency, better communication and a more proactive approach to school safety for its 26,000 students, plus teacher and staff. dozens of them created the why

wait project. one of the founders grew up in littleton, colorado. >> there's a lot of great things and best practices that are evidence-based and have been proven to work in a lot of communities around the united states. where we find those things are in communities where there have been tragedies and shootings, and it's because at that point the community wakes up and realizes where the gaps are and says they have to close the gaps. >> the district provided a 20-page safety plan template to the schools and then the schools customize for their own specific campuses, and it's up to their council made up of parents and staff and students to approve them. in a statement they said we have

southwesterly wind. in the north bay we are looking at temperatures in santa rosa reaching 81 degrees. ukiah will hit a high of 92. if you have time this weekend you might want to enjoy time in the night hours just looking up. a clear sky, and hopefully we will see more of that. and also the moon is waning, so you will see a chance to see the perseid meteor shower. it will be a spectacular sight. we will get warmer temperatures and high pressure and clear skies over the next few days. inland, it will reach 80s on saturday and mid-90s on sunday. if you have outdoor plans, stay hydrated in the hotter temperatures. in san francisco, less fog and temperatures in the upper 60s. mike, how is it looking in contra costa county? >> looks great.

6:57 for you right now. want to welcome you back as we move you forward with the top stories here on "today in the bay." we start with the breaking news out of maui where wildfires are leaving a path of destruction where parts of the island are unrecognizable. >> already 36 people died in the fires. that's up from the six deaths confirmed yesterday. sadly more deaths are feared. there's no estimate yet on the numbers of injured, but we know some people are in critical

condition. so far at least 271 structures have been damaged or destroyed, including just about all of the historic town of lahaina. san francisco mayor, london breed, this morning confirmed she is among those that were forced to evacuate and she's now in honolulu. here at home if you wake up smelling smoke, it may be the fire burning at the port of oakland. you can see the plumes of dark smoke going up in the air, and the air district said that could travel as far away as the south bay. the fire started at the steel plant yesterday afternoon. firefighters say it is contained to a single pile of debris
