recovered. hospitals are now stretched to their limits, treating the injured, and thousands of people have no power at home. many people, like this surf instructor, have nothing left but the clothing on their backs. >> pretty much lost everything. me and a few of my friends stayed back. we tried to save as much people as we could, pulled a few people out of the water. ran into a burning building with just surf shorts and a bathing suit top. you need skills and you need to be smart. >> president biden has declared a major disaster for the state of hawaii, freeing up federal assistance, and the governor says it may take months to repair the infrastructure in the areas hardest hit. we're looking at weather conditions. meteorologist kari hall is monitoring that. we know personally those strong winds can certainly fuel those flames. how are things looking now? >> we are seeing the winds calming down and we are seeing a
5:03 am
little bit of a change in the weather pattern. we talked about the weather setup that happened with a very strong hurricane well to the south of the island and high pressure setting up to the north. what happened was that the winds funneled through this area, moving from high to low pressure, and it caused whatever flames that did get started to move very quickly. we had about 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts. we're seeing the winds coming down to about 32 miles per hour and the weather conditions today are expected to be much better, with winds at about 15 to 25 miles per hour per hour, and some of the gusts reaching about 30 with higher humidity, which could possibly slow the spread of some of those flames, and hopefully that will be the case as we go throughout today. >> thank you, kari. a number of people in the bay area are still praying and waiting to find out if their loved ones survived the wildfire on maui. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell is joining us from sjc

5:05 am
>> we've located two of the relatives, including my oldest brother, confirmation they're sound and safe. we're still waiting, we have a 98-year-old grandmother who we don't have confirmation of whereabouts, where she might be. >> reporter: finding people, that could be the mission of firefighters who are headed to the island. we know of at least one firefighter in contra costa county who is leaving this morning to join the rest of the search and rescue teams there. most of them arrived anywhere between two weeks to one month mission. they're bringing in specialized animals and trying to get communications back up. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you so much, bob. it's just such a hard weight for so many families. we posted a guide on how you can help with donations, if you want

degree after 20 years as a dental hygienist. she says she has no student loan debt and she's now interviewing for a job in sales. >> it's not a lot more money. it's pretty similar, actually, to what i make as a dental hygienist in clinical practice, but after 20 years of clinical practice, you know, it starts to wear on the body. you kind of start looking around for what else you can do. >> this is where we talk about leveling the playing field, giving every student the opportunity, no matter what their background is. >> three bay area community colleges now offer bachelor's degrees, de anza college was recently approved for automotive technology management, foothill college has dental and high jen and respiratory care. 5:08 this morning, taking a live look at san jose. dark and early this morning.

5:20 am
today. it's been nice to have a cooldown for the inland valleys, even though it's still warm. but it's not nearly as hot as it is elsewhere and we have higher humidity this morning. take a look at what's happening to our south. there's a surge of monsoon moisture and an area of low pressure spinning off the coast that's bringing rain to spots in the central coast and even some lightning offshore. here in the bay area, so far it's been dry. we're kind of watching the south county area very closely to see if any of that rain comes in in the next few hours. after that, it clears out. we're headed for mild temperatures today. great day for a hike and staying active. we're going to see temperatures at noon headed for the mid-70s in the east bay, and then turning mostly sunny as we reach into the low 80s for the afternoon. for the south bay, it's going to reach into the mid to upper 80s this afternoon, with cupertino looking at a high of 86 degrees. for much of the east bay, we're in the low to mid-80s and then vallejo reaching 75, and then hayward reaching 76 degrees.
5:21 am
so mild along the inner bay, with redwood city reaching 80 degrees, and for san francisco it's about the same as we've seen throughout much of the week. breezy, cloudy to start, and then peeks of sunshine. for the north bay we're seeing temperatures ranging from 60s to low 90s, the farther inland you go it's going to be much hotter. as we take a look at fairfield, what to expect over these next several days, we've been talking a lot about it heating up. this is what's ahead. we're going back to the 90s, even upper 90s for early next week. so our inland temperatures are going from 80s to 90s, and we're going to stay there for a while. it does look like we'll have at least a stretch of four or five days of temperatures at least into the mid to upper 90s in some spots, while san francisco will see temperatures in the 60s and low 70s next week. mike, how is it looking for the san mateo bridge? >> we had a disabled vehicle, the traffic break and one crew looked like they were moving slowly across the westbound

5:33 am
this morning. >> reporter: as the death toll continues to rise, now at 55, authorities are concerned they'll find even more bodies. upwards of 1,000 people may still be missing, after 80-mile-per-hour winds kicked up and pushed it out of control. the weather conditions are improving. meantime, firefighters are on the ground as they continue to gain the upper hand, and say they are still searching for the missing. back to you. >> thanks, miguel. that firestorm hit so suddenly, many planes headed to maui late wednesday caught completely off guard. this is video shot by a passenger of one of those planes as it flew over the worst of those flames. now empty planes landing on the island, this is to help transport thousands of stranded travelers. one family staying just a few minutes from the now destroyed town of lahaina are back at home. they say they were stranded at their resort, no power, no communication, and little food. >> i've never been frightened

this way. i thought this may be it. >> i couldn't even sleep in the room, so i had to go down to the lobby with my mom, and, like, there were other people there, so i felt safer. >> now, for the locals planning to stick it out in maui, they may face months without critical resources, and it may take that long to repair the damage of that infrastructure. miguel is just one of the team of reporters who have been live throughout the morning from maui. coverage is going to continue at 7:00 right after us here on "today in the bay." back here at home, another sign that san francisco streets may pave the way of the future for driverless taxis everywhere. two companies have the green light to expand operations. state regulators last night voted to allow gm's cruise and alphabet's waymo to expand paid operations to full-time, 24/7, anywhere in the city.
5:35 am
that decision came down following hours of public comment and debate. nearly 200 people signed up to speak. among them, members of the disabled community who seem divided on the benefits. >> my concern is that we don't yet have an agreement on what accessibility looks like for our community, we don't yet have vehicles on the road or even in public programs to serve our needs. >> i'm here to support autonomous vehicle deployment in san francisco because this represents an amazing opportunity to increase transportation for blind people. >> together, the two companies operate about 500 vehicles citywide and those numbers will not change. also, the decision does not affect ongoing testing. mayor london breed released a statement last night saying, in part, autonomous vehicles are a key part of the future of transportation, not just in san francisco but in the world. as a city that leads on innovation, we are committed to integrating avs and improving

how they can work safely and effectively in our city. 5:35 right now. outside lands comes back for the 15th year to san francisco's golden gate park, which means a lot of music and a lot of crowds are back for the sold-out three-day festival. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco. this is where those gates will open in just a few hours. ginger, i can tell you're already excited. do you have tickets? >> reporter: no. you know, this time in my life, there's not much room for that just yet. but i am excited for everybody, the thousands of people who are going to be headed out to golden gate park this weekend, outside lands kicks off today. it will go through sunday. we can already see the lights set up and the entrances open. now, this is what it looked like from up above yesterday. you can see the amount of space that the festival takes up here at the park, the iconic windmill

you saw, the different stages and areas set up. now, the food may not be the main attraction, but definitely it is something highlighted at the festival. this year the festival will feature 100 restaurants, nearly all of them from the bay area, and a majority are categorized as women or minority owned. organizers say they take pride in the festival's evolution in the past 15 years, and in the ways outside lands has given back to the city of san francisco. >> we have generated over a billion dollars in economic impact to the city of san francisco, and that's something, particularly in these times, that is even more notable than when we started. >> reporter: the main attraction, of course, is the music, and this year has some heavy hitters, kendrick lamar is the headliner today, the foo fighters tomorrow night, and odesza closing things out
5:38 am
saturday night. lana del rey, megan thee stallion and the 1975. there is a lot of information about the festival on the website and app, but i do want to briefly touch on the bag policy. backpacks and bags made of clear plastic are allowed. small bags with specific measurements are allowed that don't need to be transparent. empty hydration packs with specific capacities are also allowed, but you want to make sure you check those out online and on the app. in recent years there was a heavy focus on pandemic restrictions. those are not in place. but health experts are categorizing a covid swell taking place in the city a few weeks ago. so if you are someone who needs to take precaution, ucsf infectious disease expert, dr. hong, has said continue to live your life but it's not a bad idea to carry the mask just in case. the reason i wanted to touch on the bag policy is it's
5:39 am
