>> there are two kinds of buffet styles that are thriving, family-style, budget, and high-end buffets. we just had a new buffet restaurant open up in my city. i was, like, oh, huh, but then you see a lot of people coming in and out. >> i wonder if the sneeze guards have changed. >> if i was in college, that was the best. when they switched from breakfast to lunch, back again. >> that's how you got so tall. >> i ate all my food. so much more on the "today" show, so stick around there. plus, kelsea ballerini takes over the "today" show plaza with the citi concert series. you can check that out. also, check out what's trending locally. head to our website, nbcbayarea.com. we have the trending bar at the top of the home page. right now at 6:00, survivors

are heartbroken after that devastating firestorm in maui. >> right here it's pretty tough, but we'll be okay. we'll make it. >> the latest developments overnight in hawaii and the mobilization effort now under way here in the bay area. this is "today in the bay." >> good friday morning to you. thank you for allowing us to be part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kris sanchez in for laura this morning. the situation is still nowhere near settled in maui from the catastrophic wildfires that erupted this week. drone video shows how extensive the devastation is in the historic town of lahaina. it looks like san jose during the fire storms a few years ago. the number of confirmed deaths stands at 55 and authorities are telling people to stay away from
6:02 am
the fire zone where they believe more bodies are likely to be recovered. hospitals are stretched to their limits treating the injured, and thousands of homes still lack power. many people like this surf instructor, have nothing left but the clothing on their backs. >> pretty much lost everything. me and a few of my friends stayed back, we tried to save as much people as we could, pulled a few people out of the water. we ran into a burning building with just slippers, surf shorts and a bathing suit top, because you don't need brains to try to save a life, but you do need skills and you need to be smart. >> thank goodness for her. president biden now declaring a major disaster for the state of hawaii, freeing up federal assistance. the governor says it could take months to repair the infrastructure in those hardest hit areas. >> we have team coverage this morning, starting with meteorologist kari hall, with a look at those weather conditions. kari, the winds were a big factor in the spread of that fire. how are things looking now? >> we are seeing the wind
6:03 am
calming down as hurricane dora moves farther away. but it was already a great distance away at the time that the winds picked up, and part of the reason why is you had this powerful hurricane and an area of high pressure. so as the wind flowed from high to extremely low pressure, it rushed over the hawaiian islands and gave them gusts that topped 60 miles per hour, and now we're seeing the calmer winds kicking in. still gusts at about 32 miles per hour possible today. we're also looking at higher humidity in those areas, less of a wind, and hopefully some more containment on those fires, as we get better weather conditions here over the next several days. back to you. >> thanks so much, kari. check out the scene at the airports in hawaii. residents are being told to leave the island if they can. many people in the bay area are still waiting to hear from loved ones who live there.
6:04 am
>> "today in the bay"'s bob redell is live for us at the mineta airport. i know some people based here in the bay area are preparing to head the other direction. >> reporter: correct. good morning to you, marcus and kris. the northern california red cross region says 13 volunteers are already in hawaii or in route. we know one volunteer will be leaving later this morning for honolulu and will be deployed. the wildfires have sadly destroyed most of lahaina. that's a historic town and a huge tourist attraction on the island. that's where many of gerald kaleikini's family lives. gerald says his family lost everything. so his customers along his u.p.s. route for eight years, they've already started a gofundme to help his family on maui rebuild. he's waiting to hear news about missing family members, says
6:05 am
communications, however, have been really bad. >> we've located two of the relatives, including my oldest brother, confirmation they're sound and safe. but we're still waiting, we have a 98-year-old grandmother who we don't have confirmation of whereabouts, where she might be. >> reporter: finding those missing people, that could be very well the mission of firefighters headed to the island. we know at least one firefighter with contra costa county leaving this morning to join the rest of the search andcue teams of the will arriv anywhereween two weeks one month. that's how long the m w be. they'll be bringing in specialized animals and trying to get communications back up. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. >> on our website, we posted a

guide on how you can help with donations because you want to make sure your money goes where it's supposed to. if you go to nbcbayarea.com and click on maui donations, you will find a list of organizations that we verified. a follow-up this morning as of about six hours ago, air quality advisory expired in that massive fire in the port of oakland. that fire started wednesday afternoon at the metal recycling plant. firefighters only fully cleared the area about 24 hours later. the bay area regulators do say that the district has issued two violations in response to that fire. that incident is still under investigation. antioch police say a fight led to a deadly shooting last night, it happened around 6:00 on west 20th street near antioch high school. investigators say four people were involved in that fight, one of whom pulled a gun, shooting and killing a 31-year-old man. he has not been identified. police so far have not made any arrests. it is 6:06 now.

new this morning, more college students are finding a way to avoid debt while still earning a bachelor's degree. that's because some local community colleges now offer bachelor's degrees at a fraction of the cost of a four-year college or university. 27 community colleges offer bachelor's degrees in 15 programs like dental hygiene, respiratory care, bio manufacturing, with the number of programs expected to double. in 2015 state leaders approved the programs to help fill high demand positions and offer alternatives that are more accessible and affordable. so, for example, an associates science degree in dental hygiene at foothill college in los altos hills will cost you just less than $20,000. another $4,000 and two more years of classes earns you the bachelor's degrees, which adds up to one year of costs for your typical four-year college or university. holly erickson just got her
6:08 am
bachelor's degree after 20 years as a dental hygienist. she says she has no student loan debt and now she's interviewing for a new career in sales. >> it's not a lot more money, it's similar to what i make as a dental hygienist in clinical practice, but after 20 years of clinical practice, you know, it starts to wear on the body, and you kind of start looking around for what else you can do. >> this is where we talk about leveling the playing field, giving every student the opportunity, no matter what their background is. >> three bay area community colleges offer the bachelor's degree program, de anza college recently approved for automotive technology management, foothill college offers dental hygiene and respiratory care, at solano community college you can get a degree in biomanufacturing. we take a live look in san francisco and you see karl

making a presence this morning. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring what we can expect. we know it's cooler in san francisco to start out the day. >> absolutely, and it's going to stay that way, maybe even drizzling right now. we're also watching rain just to our south. as you're stepping out the door, it feels very warm and muggy out there because we have a surge of monsoon moisture and the central coast is getting rain and even thunderstorms in some spots. we take a look at novato this morning, starting out cloudy. the temperature is at 61 degrees. we're going to have a cool morning and then see it clearing out, and then looking at a very nice and comfortable afternoon. around the bay area we're seeing temperatures ranging from 84 in the south bay to 75 in the peninsula. in the tri-valley it's going to be 86 degrees with parts of the north bay reaching 80 degrees. we're only making it up to 65 again in san francisco while the east bay will be at a breezy 74 degrees. we'll talk about a warmer weekend ahead in a few minutes. mike has a look at where we
6:10 am
can find lower gas prices. >> we start in the south bay, sunnyvale's best, alliance on west el camino real, it's reported at $4.45. contra costa county's best is in antioch, star gas and mart on lone tree way, $4.49. in marin county, $4.69 at good oldatt & jeff's on vintage way. on the roadways, a friday lighter build. we do have slowing, of course, highway 4, 37, mild. at the bay bridge, the metering lights were turned on about 20 minutes ago. the backup really not seen at the toll plaza. i have another camera i'll show you coming up. there's something to show you on the approach. coming up this morning, one bar you might say is still playing ball when it comes to

happy friday to you. the time is 6:13. almost time to get up and head out the door. let's head to mountain view with a look at your morning forecast. it starts out with some low 60s and partly to mostly cloudy. we'll increasingly get more sunshine throughout the day, and it's going to be a really nice and comfortable afternoon. we'll get a look at some hotter weekend temperatures in your microclimate forecast coming up. dublin, 580 approaching the interchange, picking up the volume a bit but not lowering the pace. good stuff traveling in for a lighter friday. we'll see how things are shaping up as you're heading toward the metering lights at the bay bridge. good morning. very happy friday to you. we got more inflation news. the producer price index, ppi, came in a little hotter than we were expecting. trading futures down on worries of those new interest rate hikes that could come. lyft has started sending ads to users on their lyft app.
6:15 am
the company has found users look at their app seven times while ordering and waiting for a car. zoom, which you remember brought people back to the office recently, is dumping its rule about no meetings on wednesdays. the company had been very proud of its no meeting rule. but in a memo, the company's ceo told employees the prohibition on getting together was a barrier to collaboration. the ceo of the company formerly known as twitter, linda yaccarino, was on cnbc, talking about the company known as 'x' these days. she defended the name change and claimed the social network site is now much safer than it used to be. >> by all objective metrics 'x' is a much healthier and safer platform than it was a year ago. since acquisitions, we have built brand safety and content
6:16 am
moderation tools that have never existed before at this company. >> that doesn't seem to be what advertisers think. it's certainly not what studies say about 'x'. racial slurs doubled since elon musk took over, according to the center for countering digital hate, and the antidefamation league. let's go from hate to love. it is easier to buy a diamond ring for the one you love. diamond prices are apparently down. analysts tell the "wall street journal" there's a glut of polished diamonds, which are at ab ten-year low. the diamond industry controls the supply, apparently overproduced after the pandemic to meet that sudden rush, and now there are extras. in the pricing information there was also pricing on 3 to 4 karat diamonds, and i don't know anybody who needs to know that information -- >> not me, no. >> good to know.
6:17 am
>> people wanted to get married during the pandemic, it was, like, i'm traumatized. >> it happens throughout american history, that people get married, and that was a bit of the rush. now the delay is the people since or during the pandemic haven't been dating. how would you meet anybody? so they've got kind of this delay in people getting engaged. >> online dating, but now you've got to do it in person to make sure it's right. it will come. just wait. >> thanks, scott. san francisco's iconic anchor brewing company may have poured its last brew. i had mine a couple weeks ago. one bar is still pumping out anchor steam, though not for long. the anchor bar at oracle park still has it on tap and in bottles. the giants say the distributor plans to keep oracle park stocked up through the end of the season. that means giants fans will have at least two more months to drink an anchor steam beer, but at the ballpark.
6:18 am
new video this morning, amazing and shot in the waters around monterey bay. >> check this out. a whale watching boat caught something other than whales, certainly a sight just as special, a pod of dolphins swimming near the surface, feasting on fish. it may seem lucky to catch that sight, a huge pod like this really is something special. mother nature is just -- >> i've seen a pod of dolphins leaping out of the water like that. i was on a cruise. then also i've been on a whale watching tour where we were able to see several whales. i highly recommend those whale watching tours, because you might see something really amazing out there. >> sometimes from the golden gate bridge you can see something like that. >> shout out to moss landing. >> we're so lucky to be so close to that. let's take a look at what it looks like this morning as you
6:19 am
get ready to head out the door. now, it's misting and drizzling as we take a look at this live view in emeryville. may need the windshield wipers on your drive to work this morning. we're seeing low clouds that are going to keep temperatures cool and a great day for spending more time outside. in the east bay, we're starting out cool and cloudy, with temperatures in the low 60s, but then as we go through the rest of the morning into the afternoon, our temperatures start to feel much more comfortable. eventually making it into the low 80s for an afternoon high, as we get more sunshine. let's move to the south bay, with a look at our temperatures. east san jose reaching 87 degrees, and we'll see a high of 85 in los gatos. for much of the east bay it's in the mid to upper 80s, some mid-70s for hayward. redwood city, expect to make it up to 80 today. very much like we've seen the past few days. half moon bay, 62 degrees, and
6:20 am
63 in the ingleside district. for the north bay, 69 in mill valley to 80 in santa rosa, and 91 in clear lake. so the farther you go inland, the hotter those temperatures will be. let's take a look at a spot like fairfield and what's expected the next ten days. it's nice and mild today, with a breezy wind, but it's going to start to get hotter this weekend, as high pressure returns and shifts the wind direction. we'll see some upper 90s in the forecast on tuesday, so we are bracing for some higher heat to come our way. as we take a look at our seven-day forecast, our temperatures go from mid-80s to upper 80s and then mid-90s. we stay there for a while. it's going to be hot throughout much of next week. we're not going to see as much of a warm-up in san francisco. it's going to be very comfortable here. and you'll get much more sunshine, with highs in the low 70s. mike, you were going to show us something near the bay bridge. >> yeah, i was going to show you the camera you just showed them. there's mist on the lens. you called it out.
6:21 am
no need for me to be redundant. the mist is at the berkeley curve. there's no slowing. do note if you see it on the windshield it might be slick on the roadways. the roadways are lighter, despite the metering lights. no backup here just between the toll plaza and the metering lights themselves. you might find some bunching up as you hit fewer lanes and it slows across the span. there's just a build for highway 4, highway 37, no surprises. light friday drive. so good stuff getting in through the city, across the bay bridge, the san mateo bridge, the dumbarton bridge, all moving smoothly. a crash on the blotter, eden canyon road. the on-ramp might be affected. the south bay looks great as far as the speed sensors go. but the slowing that we typically see coming down through san martin and heading north is also not really here this morning. a mild slowing into morgan hill over the last few minutes, and over here there may be a crash as you're approaching the 101 off-ramp, but not a major deal
6:22 am
for san martin. back to you. >> thanks, mike. as we head to break, a reminder that here at nbc bay area, we are getting ready to clear the shelters, and this morning we want to introduce you to this handsome fellow. his name is falcon. he is currently being sheltered at the berkeley humane shelter. if you've never had a pet before, he might be perfect because he's 8 1/2 years old, he loves to nap, enjoys window watching and prefers to stay indoors. >> we're hosting several pet adoption pop-ups. there will be two next weekend and you can find the detais on our

this summer we have been supporting our schools with a marathon backpack drive and many of you raced out to help and we say thank you. >> thank you. chris chmura is taking us to the heartwarming finish line where there's actually still one more lap to go. >> the pint sized are beaming with gallons of smiles because they're picking up the free backpack full of new supplies for the new school year. it's pure happiness. during an otherwise tough financial time at home. >> it's just bad, hard for families right now.
6:26 am
>> parents can attest, prices are up across the board. >> you're looking at somewhere about $70, $80 for just basic school supplies. most people don't have it, you know. >> enter the bay area nonprofit family giving tree. all these donations aim to deliver a level playing field for academic success. and for that -- >> we're so grateful that you guys donate to all the schools. >> grant elementary parents expressed appreciation. >> it's amazing because i don't have to worry about the stuff i have to buy. >> students like ava have just one final thing to say. >> thank you! >> her backpack will take her miles. but this year's donation drive still has a distance to go. family giving tree says donations are off the mark. it still hasn't hit its goal of 28,000 donated backpacks for 2023. >> you can help out, too. here is how. scan the qr code on your screen right now.

it will take you to nbcbayarea.com/schools. while you're there, you can make a cash contribution from the comfort of your home. we thank you in advance for supporting our schools. have a great weekend. next, the top stories we're following, including those catastrophic wildfires burning in maui. we're going to take you to the island for an update and one of the world's most famous celebrities is there. what she's doing to help residents left with nothing. >> reporter: plus, we're live at golden gate park, where outside lands kicks off just hours from now. people are starting to get to the park to put those last-minute touches. ahead, we'll

it's just scary to see a big wildfire coming your way. >> right now at 6:30, new video showing the firestorm destroying homes in maui and it shows how quickly that disaster spread. we'll take you there with new stories from survivors who barely made it out alive. san francisco taking a big step forward in the future of driverless taxis. two companies can now do business any time. the decision putting the city miles ahead on controversial technology. and celebrating 15 years. we are live in san francisco to take an inside look at outside lands. we'll show you what you can expect if you're attending this year's festival, including that

all-important forecast. this is "today in the bay." #. >> thanks so much for joining us on this friday morning. i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. kris was talking about outside lands. what should you wear? i know you need to start out with a jacket. meteorologist kari hall has a look. we know some rain is in the area. >> there's rain to our south, so it feels really muggy outside. we've had a surge of monsoon moisture and we're seeing rain on the central coast. if you're driving farther south this morning, hitting the road, just a heads-up that you may run into showers and possibly even thunderstorms. around the bay area, it has remained dry and we're seeing the typical marine layer sliding in. that keeps it cloudy throughout the morning. then it peels back to the coastline and we get clearing skies inland, so our temperatures start to warm up. so as we take a look at highs around the bay area, it will
6:32 am
range from 84 in the south bay to 75 in the peninsula. in the tri-valley, we're headed for the mid-80s. for the east bay, it will reach into the mid-70s. san francisco staying cool with mid-60s today, and 80 in the north bay. mike, you've been tracking a few issues and now we head to the richmond-san rafael bridge. >> a little more popular on friday. we have westbound 580 heading toward the north bay, as you see right here, no surprises. a gray sky, kari talked about a mist and we saw that on the camera around the berkeley curve. highway 4, there is a crash right around willow pass, the exit. if it affects the off-ramp, continue over to port chicago highway and take surface streets back to where you need to go. the rest of the bay showing mostly all green sensors in the south bay. san jose is just starting with a little bit of slowing. >> thank you, mike. to our top story now and the latest out of maui. >> the devastation there, thousands of people remain in the dark.
6:33 am
an entire segment of the island remaining off limits. here is more of that new drone video we have showing the town of lahaina in ashes. sad to see. there's still no hard count on the number of structures, but hawaii's governor is calling this the worst natural disaster in the state's history, and of course this comes with grim new numbers of the lives lost and the struggle first responders are facing. here is "today"'s miguel almaguer on the ground this morning. >> reporter: good morning. as the death toll continues to rise, now at 55, authorities are concerned they'll find even more bodies. by one account, upwards of 1,000 people may still be missing, after 80-mile-per-hour winds first kicked up the blaze and pushed it out of control. the weather conditions are improving. meantime, firefighters are on the ground as they continue to gain the upper hand, and say they are still searching for the missing. back to you. the firestorm hit so
6:34 am
suddenly, many planes headed to maui late wednesday were caught completely off guard. this is video shot by a passenger and that passenger just flew over the worst of those flames. now empty planes are landing on the island to help transport thousands of those stranded travelers. >> some of those stranded travelers are members of a union city family who were staying just a few minutes from the now-destroyed town of lahaina. they are back home in union city. they say they were stranded at their resort with no power, no communication, and very little food. >> i've never been frightened this way. i thought this may be it. >> i couldn't even sleep in the room, so i went down to the lobby with my mom. and, like, there were other people there, so i felt safer. >> so there are locals plan to go stick it out in maui. they face lack of critical resources and it too take a long time to repair infrastructure.
6:35 am
>> evacuees are getting a helping hand from media icon oprah winfrey. she visited a shelter in maui yesterday. a spokesperson says she first went to the walmart and costco to buy supplies. oprah owns more than a thousand acres of land in maui. the "today" show has a team of reporters on the ground, including miguel almaguer, live throughout maui. their coverage is going to continue at the top of the hour after "today in the bay." a live look at san jose where the city is paving the way for the future of driverless taxis everywhere. that's because two companies just got the green light to expand their operations. state regulators last night voted to allow gm's cruise and alphabet's waymo to expand their paid operations to full-time 24/7, anywhere in the city. that decision came down following public comment for hours, and of course there was lots of debate. nearly 200 people signed up to
6:36 am
speak. among them, members of the disabled community who seemed a bit divided on the benefits. >> my concern is that we don't yet have an agreement on what accessibility looks like for our community, we don't have vehicles on the road or even in pilot programs that serve our needs. >> i'm here to support autonomous vehicle deployment in san francisco because this represents an amazing opportunity to increase transportation for blind people. >> together, the companies operate about 500 vehicles citywide. those numbers will not change. also, the decision does not affect ongoing testing. mayor london breed released a statement late last night saying, in part, autonomous vehicles are a key part of the future of transportation, not just in san francisco, but in the world. as the city that leads on innovation, we are committed to integrating avs and improving how they can work safely and effectively in our city.
6:37 am
switching gears a little bit, 6:26 right now. music lovers from near and far getting ready to descend on san francisco's golden gate park because in just a few hours outside lands returns for its 15th year. >> you sound like you've got tickets. >> no. i'm excited, though. >> "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab live for us this morning. i know she's excited, too. ginger, you quickly reminded me you've got three little ones at home that said you could not go this weekend. >> not this time. give it a couple of years. >> reporter: i will say the festival is open to all people, all ages, especially if you look on the website. it will have that on it. so we're just not going that route this year. maybe next year. good morning to you guys, as you mentioned, it's the 15th year of outside lands, and in just some hours from now at 11:00 a.m., the gates will officially open. the music starts at 12:00 noon. this whole scene where people
6:38 am
are starting to come, some workers are coming to set up things last minute, this will all look very different. people will start streaming in. this is what it looked like yesterday as organizers were putting things up a day before things kicked off. you can see the amount of space the festival takes up at golden gate park. you can see the iconic windmill is in place, the different stages and areas that are set. it might not be the main attraction, but something highlighted at the festival is the food. this year the festival will feature 100 restaurants, nearly all of them from the bay area, and a majority are categorized as women or minority owned. organizers they take pride in theestival's evolution the 15 years, and in the ways outside lands has given back to the city of san francisco. >> we have generated over a billion dollars in economic impact to the city of san francisco, and that's something,
6:39 am
particularly in these times, is even more notable than when we started. >> reporter: the main attraction is the music, and this year has some heavy hitters. kendrick lamar is the headliner for today, the foo fighters tomorrow night, and odesza closing things out sunday night. some other artists to watch out for, lana del rey, megan thee stallion, and the 1975. now, there is a lot of information about the festival on the website, or on the app. but i do want to briefly touch on the bag policy at outside lands. this is something that has confused me before at different events. backpacks and bags made of clear plastic are allowed, small bags with specific measurements are allowed and do not have to be clear. but you have to be specific with those measurements. empty hydration packs with specific capacities are also allowed, but make sure you check online or on that app so you know what those measurements or what the capacities are.
6:40 am
now, in recent years there was a heavy focus on pandemic restrictions. those are not in place any longer. but health experts are categorizing a covid swell taking place in the city. so if you are someone who needs to take some precaution, ucsf infectious disease expert dr. peter chin-hong says continue to live your life but it's not a bad idea to carry that mask around. the bag policy, it's something that's confused me. i've seen it where women are trying to hide their bags in not so safe places. we want to make sure you take a look at the bag policy. if you are a parent or a caregiver who is a little more risky than i am this year, do take note, no strollers allowed. that is not allowed at outside lands. you might have to use the carrier and get creative. >> we'll have to take note from kira klapper. she's brave and takes her kids to festivals.
6:41 am
