morning to you all over maui, wildfires are taking lives and homes the home here completely gone. you can see what the wild fires did to the two cars behind me. i wanted to show you these cars because just west of us people tried escaping in their vehicles once the flames caught up to them there was no chance for survival all across this island, people are in a state of shock. the spirit is strong, bu it is getting harder and harder every day as that death toll grows. >> jesus, please help us. >> reporter: this video shows the inferno that engulfed lahaina. and how residents spent hours in the ocean to survive anger is growing how did the nation's deadliest wildfire happen with n warning? did you get any type of alert? >> no. no, no, no. >> reporter: elizabeth, a grandmother, said she was so scared when she escaped she didn't realize her face and

armed were burned. firefighters rescued her, treating her burns, but her brother is still missing she's pleading for any word from him. >> i'm so worried about everybody. hopefully, you still alive. >> reporter: the search for the missing and dead is just getting started. k-9 cadaver dogs arriving over the weekend and police announcing just 3% of lahaina has been searched. >> are you saying we're just at the beginning of this disaster >> for the first few days we had done searches in the streets and the cars, but we couldn't enter any structures. >> reporter: what's that final number >> it will take us a while to get there. >> reporter: more than 2,700 structures have been destroyed, most of them homes residents desperate to get back. >> they're not moving fast forward. it's been too long it's been six days. >> reporter: the king family lost their home. their kids rescued by their friend and neighbor. they are all staying together

with friends, three families under one roof and he's angry at local leaders. >> where were you guys you know where were you guys to try and get us out, evacuate us? you know we're mad. we're mad. we didn't just lose our homes. we lost our town. >> reporter: the cause of the blaze is still under investigation. video shot from the water showed both how bad the fire was but also how strong the wind was blowing. >> we're in the ocean. >> reporter: 19-year-old noah and his 13-year-old brother spent hours in the water along with their mother escaping the flames at one point, their mother started to get cold. >> we kind of like all huddled around her and wanted to keep her warm >> reporter: has your mom talked to you guys and thanked you for being by her side? >> if any of us were alone, i don't know if we would have made it. >> reporter: now, a class action

lawsuit has been filed alleging that the destruction could have been avoided had the utility company de-energized their power lines before the high winds started. for their part hawaii electric said they followed all protocols, that they can't comment on pending litigation, but they did say at this early stage, no cause for the fire has yet been determined >> thank you so much >> we are joined by retired major jeff hickman spokesman for hawaii's department of defense. it is good to see you this morning. wow. some of these pictures are devastating and the stories are harrowing. i can only imagine hour by hour the numbers are changing can you just bring us up-to-date on the number of casualties that we found so far? >> yes, thank you. currently it is 96 casualties. and the fear is the number will go get higher. you know, like your reporter said, we only have 3% of the search done, and they want to be meticulous and do it right so they're going street by

street, block by block they're doing cars and will soon enter buildings. the hawaii national guard is assisting maui county with that search and rescue. fema has hit the ground. they have about 300 personnel, and are providing cadaver dogs the efforts will start to move a little faster than they have in the last couple days and hopefully we bring closure to those on maui. >> what's the human condition right now? what are the needs there are people able to have enough food and water is there shelter for them? what is the need right now >> right now we have about 1,100 people in shelters we have visitors because we had to take the visitors out of lahaina. and our residents into shelters on maui. resources on our island are limited. now, the people in the world and hawaii have stepped up our governor said the world is showing compassion and aloha, and right now we're feeling it the donations coming in to assist maui is overwhelming.

their high school there is closed because of the shelter and so much goods they need, water, baby formula, blankets, pillows, things that people lost are all being donating -- donated right now we're referring people to donate money to assist maui to get them back on their feet right now we're in the response phase, and we're soon heading to recovery that will be the longest phase yet. >> this fire was aggressive. it was going 60 to 80 miles an hour they said it was moving a mile a minute there were some calls that the power company should have cut the power earlier right away to prevent any further fire do you think that should have been done? >> i can't really comment on that what i do want to share with you is that the governor and state attorney general will have a comprehensive review on what is the cause behind this fire and what steps were taken. but right now our focus is on the priority of maui right now it is water, shelter,

the publisher of a newspaper says his elderly mother died because of the raid. of offices and her moment were so traumatic to her he's asked why the raid even happened in the first place. this morning national attention on a small kansas town after police raided the offices of a local newspaper, seizing reporters' computers and phones. the raid has made headlines nationwide, stirring a debat over freedom of the press. >> they were running this gestapo-type tactics >> reporter: the paper's owner says his 98-year-old mother joan collapsed and died just one day after the raid. >> she became so upset about this that she wouldn't eat that day or sleep that night. rain at issue is a tip one o his reporters received about a local business owner accused of

this weekend's outside lands music festival. investigators say around 7:30 last night someone found a woman's body at fulton near 22nd, right on the edge of golden gate park. san francisco standard says the body was discovered inside of a duffle bag. police aren't releasing many details. they're asking anyone with information to give them a call. nepotism concerns in alameda county district attorney's office. the "east bay times" reporting that pamela price has hired her boyfriend to work as a senior program specialist. the newspaper says that it could not figure out what his responsibilities specifically are, but he is paid six figures.
