francisco unified and more than 20 other bay area districts. there is, though, a tragic reminder for drivers to slow down and pay attention. last night a 4-year-old little girl in a stroller and her father were hit by an suv at a crosswalk near oracle park. the little girl died. it happened last night on 4th and king streets. we are still working on an update on the father's condition, but we do know he was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. the driver is cooperating with the investigation. alameda county's district attorney pamela price has only been in office for eight months, but the effort to recall her is moving forward. last night alameda county officially accepted a petition aimed at removing her from office. this is being spearheaded by community members that call themselves save alameda county for everybody. price officially has ten days to respond to that recall notice. after that, the group will have to gather 90,000 signatures more

let's bring in nbc's legal correspondent, laura jarrett first of all, this is an all-around kind of sad bummer of a story. let's talk about what the tuohys said their only choice was to have a conservatorship because he was too old to adopt. >> under tennessee law that makes sense. usually a conservatorship, everyone remembers this with the debacle with britney spears, it is either someone who is underage or if you know sort of impaired in some way now, it is not clear that at 37 years old he needs to still have the conservatorship. if they're not contesting it, the judge will probably let them out of it. the issue is whether he should be entitled to backpay or money because he's saying they made a lot of money off his likeness and using his image. again, it is not clear he will be able to get any remedy from that. >> laura, what about this idea that michael oher, his claim that he didn't even know he was part of this conservatorship for 20 years

the latest surrounding last week's police raid of the marion county record offices in kansas. that newspaper which dates back more than 150 years is still expected to hit newsstands today, and that's despite hard drives, computers and documents being seized by authorities days ago. just days ago, a lot of folks are calling this a violation of the first amendment. stephanie gosk is following the story for us. >> this morning, like you say, the marion county record is being published on schedule as it always is every wednesday but getting the weekly paper out has not been easy after that raid, the mayor calling unconstitutional the paper is still being published, even as t police in this small kansas town raided the paper's offices on friday, seizing cell phones, hard drives and documents. the search warrant accused reporters of identity theft and computer crimes, while reporting on local restaurant owner for a story that didn't run. he told the city council the

and they're also developing autonomy, which we try to instill in our children. >> how many years have you been teaching >> september will be my 42nd year. >> she knows a thing or two. never wait until the last minute to check on the summer reading list i know a lot of parents like to cram it all in at the end. >> i would say stagger the assignments because they weren't intended to ruin your vacation or interfere with family time. what they were intended for was to help review skills and help your children stay engaged and to kind of accelerate learning for the new year. >> it may be a little late now since we're at the end of summer never go rogue with school supplies, so just get what they need. >> yes teachers have given a lot of thought what tools your child will need. will you veer from the intended list, it can lead to

complications for your child also, pick them up early and store them. >> we have two more quick ones never ignore the information packet, which is good. but let's move to the last one never snooze on working out a wake-up schedule because your kids have been having summer hours. they're sleeping in. >> they have but especially for middle school and high school, work out what type of alarm system will be used will you use it from the phone or a traditional clock put it across the room so they have to get out of bed to turn it off and also i would advise to take the tech devices out at bedroom so that they don't stay up any longer than they need to. >> she's been teaching for 42 years. she knows. craig, over to you. >> thank you up next, pat buckley pat is a coach at a high school in new york. he has 25 years of coaching experience and oh, by the way, a former coach of the year recognized by the basketball association of new york he has five tips on what he would never do as a parent with

kids that play sports. let's get right to it. never ever approach the coach to talk to them about more playing time for your son or daughter. why? >> yeah. we want to develop those communication skills early for our kids to advocate for themselves for playing time. you know, a lot of coaches also, if it is an intense game and a parent is feeling a certain way, maybe that 24-hour rule for them to -- you know, the next day things always seem better. but certainly put it on the kid to advocate for themselves. >> you don't want to be one of those parents. if a kid wants to advocate for more playing time, he or she can do that? >> 100%. >> this is a big one never coach from the sidelines as a parent. >> yeah. you see it all the time. you know, we're -- on the high school level, we're practicing six days a week. we're their coach. allow us to do our job it's hard enough for high school kids to be coached during a game anyway it's competitive hearing another voice from the

stands never a good thing. what you can do is cheer, cheer for your kid. >> this third tip is a great one. never make it about yourself >> yeah, listen. your journey will be different from your child's. trying to live your dreams through them can be difficult for a kid. let them have their own experience. >> this next one is also something that i think a lot of parents struggle with because a lot of parents want their son or their daughter to play a spot because it helps to develop so many essential skills. but you maintain you should not force your child to play sports. why not? >> it's got to come from them. they have to be passionate about it especially as they progress in their life they might start with a sport and give it up but if it's from their heart and they're passionate about it, that's when you will see a kid be really happy, which is the most important thing as a parent. >> this is applicable in sports and other things as well never forget what it's all about. don't lose perspective.

>> what do you want your kid to get out of sports, relationships, being part of a program, team building the greatest compliment you can get is your kid is a great teammate, respectful and responsible. >> coach, thank you. oh, sheinelle? >> thank you, craig. i'm here with a school nurse from ohio. she has more than 20 years of experience and is the president of the national association of school nurses. our first one you say never send a child to school with pills in a baggy or in their pockets. >> we need to know what medication children are taking at school. ask your school what you need to get your child medicine at school if you are having trouble, ask your school nurse. he or she could expedite that. if your child has unlabeled pills, they might be falsely accused of having illegal substances, and we never want that to happen. >> okay.

>> because it is called a medicine cabinet but, hoda, this is not where we want our medications. >> why not >> because generally our medicine is in the bathroom. it is humid. it's hot that moisture and humidity with damage your medications and make them less effective. >> so what is a good place to put them >> you want to avoid the bathroom, but you can use a storage bin. if you have a shoebox. find a dresser drawer or a closet. >> we only use medications every now and then for a lot of people how do we know if they have gone bad? >> expiration dates are always important to follow. but regardless of the expiration date, if you medications start clumping together, if they're softer than usual or harder than usual, they smell funny, if the color, the texture is different, if they're chipping look, my thing is, if you're like, i don't know about this, just be cautious >> get rid of it >> yeah, be cautious >> how strict are the expiration dates? >> so i'm a rule follower. and i say expiration dates are a good guide

we need to follow those expiration dates make sure they are as effective as they need to be in our body, so definitely follow thoseu? >> chances are >> what if you take it anyway or didn't notice it, can it harm you? >> chances are you are probably okay but this is why, especially during this time of year, you want to look at your expiration dates. throw out the stuff that's not good and lots of things expire, so really try to stick to those. >> so go through all of your medicines and do that? >> absolutely. >> the other thing that's important is when you have old medicines and you don't know what to do with them, you got to throw them out, you got to get rid of them, but how >> you do. the first and best way is what the dea has, this drug take-back program. you can talk to your pharmacist as well. many meds, some of them might need to be flushed look at the label on the package of the medication. >> you mean flush it down the
