we continue with the elevated fire danger as well due to isolated storms that may fire up once again in the bay area. we will watch at the impacts it will have further to the south. and we are reaching 77 in oakland. hayward, 81 degrees. 71 in san francisco. san josé will be in the mid-80s. we will talk about the weekend coming up. mike, how is it looking in the south bay? >> we are looking at a smooth drive, and so three quarters of an hour before we will see slowing. we will tell you more about the fire and show you pictures coming up in a few minutes. the 5:00 reopening happened before 5:00, and now alameda,

once again, no problem. developing this morning a san josé police officer is in critical condition after what thoefrts are describing as an ambush-style shooting. >> what are we learning about this officer, bob? >> reporter: good morning, laura and marcus. weigh know -- we don't know her identity. the san josé police have not yet identified her, but last night, sadly, she was in critical condition and in the hospital, and she is the first female officer to be shot in the line of duty and the second officer should be shot in the line of duty this year in what was a heinous and cowardly act. she and her partner to a

domestic situation, and a woman said her husband was drunk and was going to hit her, and the husband came out and shot her. >> what happened next is an act of undeniable courage, and without hesitation or consideration for himself, the officer's partner extracted the victim officer from the line of fire to a place of safety where he began to treat her injuries. >> this is video of the suspect being arrested after a four-hour stand off with the police.

he's a convicted felon here in san josé county. assembly member, evan low, tweeted out that his brother was the san josé police officer that pulled the injured officer to safety, and he wrote please send your encouragement to the officer in the hospital and my brother, and he is my hero. reporting outside san josé police quarters, bob redell for today in the bay. you can see the thick clouds of black smoke racing up the hillside in the time-lapse video. this is near coyote creek golf drive. and that smoke brought traffic

to a near stand still. as of 4:00 p.m. it was 40% contained. and then new calls in the wake of the maui firestorm, and the number of deaths is 110 with search teams only completing one-third of the search zone. some people believe the electricity company responded too slowly. president biden and first lady plan to visit the island on monday. we have a list of verified locations where you can help. little saigon leaders and business owners will meet with

tropical storm. it's expected to deliver widespread rain and winds by the end of the week, but that's not all. let's take a look at the predicted map. the path of that hurricane right now, it's churning off the coast of mexico. by early next week, the remnants will arrive here in the bay area. kari hall looking at that. >> yeah, it's not often we see this magnitude of a tropical system making it that far into southern california. the water off the coast is very cold. hurricanes need water temperatures of at least 70 degrees, so it's not that warm off the coast of san diego, and it's expected to weaken as it approaches. right now it's off the coast of mexico as a category 1, and it's expected to intensify rapidly around baja, california and the

cabo area. right now the current track takes it east of the bay area, and a lot of the rain is on the eastern side of the system, so that will keep a lot of the rain away from the bay area, but we could also see some lightning with all of that energy very close by. it depends on the shifts in the tract and that tropical rain is expected to arrive late monday into tuesday as the remnants of hilary moves in, and that will affect the mountains and areas south of the bay area. the bay area will see some of the impacts, and we are watching that very closely. we will keep you updated as we get closer. mike, you are giving us a

look at where we can find lower gas prices? >> yeah, a lot of folks heading over towards richmond this morning, but the best price is 4.49 on san pablo avenue. and then on north matilda in sunnyvale, 4.49, the same price. on the roadways we are looking at a pretty predictable calm drive. the speed sensors, no major issues right now. highway 4 is where there's construction, but the exclamation point is where that there could be a wrong-way driver. coming up on "today in the bay," fewer than 1 in

good thursday morning. in san francisco, we are starting out cloudy with drizzle and will be in the 60s. we will get clearing, a little sunshine around 2:00 this afternoon. while the coast stays cool, the valleys heating up once again. a look at all of our microclimates coming up. yesterday we had a big volume of traffic on the roads later in the morning, and right

now fremont, we will see how they shape up but so far, an easy flow. i have an interesting stock symbol, it's vfe, and it's jumping to very high levels as investors tried to get in on the next tesla. money coming out of the very volatile stock this morning. a lot of the red you are seeing on the board comes as the fed might raise the interest rates

again. remember, money is not destroyed. it just moves. it feels like it's destroyed when it comes out of the pocket, but it just moves. the overall cost of buying a home, the mortgage rate, the actual price of the home and everything put altogether is now the highest its been in nearly 40 years. it's a perfect storm. those that own a home don't want to sell because they want to keep their 2 or 3% mortgage, and that means fewer homes so higher prices. and the median price of a home is -- it's like 16% of californians can buy a house in california. >> it's tough. >> big time. >> it's near impossible. >> stick around. we have something we want to

congratulations. it's going to be cooler, and that will also be a treat. we are starting out with a partly cloudy sky. temperatures in the upper 60s at drop-off time, and then pickup time in the mid-80s. a very warm afternoon. let's get a look at the high temperatures for today. 90 in dublin, so we are coming out of the mid to upper 90s, too, and low 90s today so making a little progress as we approach the weekend. it will be mild in san mateo reaching 77 degrees. 88 for novato, and san francisco in the low 70s. for tomorrow, temperatures continue to cool off. san josé will reach 83 degrees. mostly low 80s and about the same on saturday. the valleys will be heating up. let's talk about the rain chances, still, and that chance exists especially for the north bay as we get a lot of activity

moving over parts of the central valley. then for the weekend we will be watching hilary, and this is expected to intensify off the coast of baja, california, and as it moves into cooler water near san diego it will weaken and still spread rain across southern california, and that will move towards tahoe. right now with the current track, it keeps rain to the east but there will still be spotty showers, and unfortunately the lightning potential will continue with that as it moves across the region. we are keeping storm chances in the forecast because of a slight chance in the track that could make a huge difference in the kind of weather we will see. we are looking at hot temperatures with highs in the low 90s into the middle of next week. san francisco will have a mild weekend. a lot of low clouds and fog with mist and drizzle and 60s in the forecast. also, storm chances early next

will be warm today. at least they are starting on a thursday, right? you have today, tomorrow and then the weekend again. look at where we are starting. mostly temperatures in the upper 60s. also starting in hayward school district. at pickup time it's 78 degrees and sunny and nice for the walk home or for enjoying the time outside after the first day. temperatures are headed for the low to mid-90s with the interior valleys with livermore and morgan hill reaching 94. novato reaching 88 degrees, and 86 in santa rosa. we will talk about what is ahead coming up. mike, you are still focused on the report of a wrong-way driver. >> yeah, i think there was a traffic break. the reports chp says, the older reports said somebody did report

the wrong-way driver on the side of the road of highway 4, and then they cleared the reports and the speed sensors are starting to improve. everything sounds like it's safe with just typical slowing there. highway 37 slows out of vallejo over towards novato. no major surprises now. the slow on highway 4 was just the report of the possible wrong-way driver. and then ginger conejero saab is in our news room this morning, and robo taxis just got the green light to expand? >> that's right. now we might be hitting the brakes on that approval. much like the videos that have gone viral on social media, there could be an unexpected

stop to the expansion of robo taxis in san francisco, at least that's what the city's attorney office is trying to do by asking the utilities commission to temporarily pause the expansion. you are looking at the confusion and congestion some robo taxis have caused. a car is briefly stopped in the middle of mission street before driving into a construction zone and then pulling over to the wrong side of the road. now, over the weekend we also saw a whole slew of crews cars blocking a road, and now a pedestrian intentionally interfered with the car that created a chain reaction.

our senior investigative reporter has been looking into the debate for autonomous taxis for sometime now. >> they do say once one car in their fleet learns something, that actually the entire fleet learns it at the same time. they say the only way you will see the technology improve is by having these vehicles on the road. >> san francisco reportedly plans to argue in the new motion that the environmental impact they would have on the roads in the city could be issues. >> thank you, ginger. 5:34.

fremont police are investigating an apparent shootout involving people in two cars last night. this happened around 8:00 around lowry and alvarado. police did confirm officers found shell casings and no victims. hawaii state leaders now promising a thorough review of the response to last week's deadly fire storms. the number of confirmed dead now at 110 with about two-thirds of the burn zone left to be searched still. and there were reports a utility crew blocked lanes as people were trying to evacuate, with new images seemingly supporting that allegation. now emergency management leaders are backtracking on the failure of sirens to notify residents about the danger. >> had we sounded the siren that

night, we are afraid people would have gone into the fire. i should also note there are no sirens on the mountainside, where the fire was spreading down. >> lawmakers are now calling on an investigation into the fire and the response. a follow-up this morning on an accident that killed a 4-year-old girl two nights ago near san francisco's oracle park. a 71-year-old woman accused of driving the suv that killed her has now been arrested and charged. a memorial growing at the site where it happened at 4th and king streets, and police say the girl's father suffered critical injuries. the driver is now facing charges including vehicular manslaughter. one of the safety driving advocates says that area is where people drive too fast.

climb. you should always keep your food secure in a bear locker or canister. >> glad i didn't see any when i was there. a live look for you outside san josé and at the golden gate bridge. there's a lot happening this weekend. we want to get a look at what we are expecting from the forecast now. meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking that. who is this little guy here. >> that's my son. this is one of our favorite events. we went last year, so i wanted to post that picture of him there in san francisco between pier 30 and 32, there will be the low riders and it's a competition, and it's a great event. we will see the morning start out in the low 60s and then throughout the day upper 60s, so it will be nice and comfortable. if you are going hiking this weekend or enjoying wine tasting in sonoma valley, it will be in the low 80s.

saturday, upper 80s. not as warm as it has been, and temperatures are coming down quite a bit. maybe you will be taking your low rider along highway 1, and it will be in the low 70s on friday, and mid-70s on saturday and upper 70s on sunday. the tahoe area will have the chance of more showers and thunderstorms. we will see that continue for friday. you may get a break on saturday, and then you start to see the remnants of tropical moisture coming in, enhancing the threat of more thunderstorms on sunday. we'll talk more about our rain chances here in the bay area as well as tracking hurricane hilary. more on that in a few minutes. mike, you spotted something on the bay bridge. >> yeah, it was not a low rider. i think there was some compression to the commute, and

the speeds have recovered over the last couple of minutes. we're already once again for the speed sensors once again prediction. throughout the day, we will have bigger volumes, and there's a 7:30 performance of cirque du soleil in oakland. there could be crowds approaching the area. nothing major, but do note that for the on and off-ramp by the coliseum. starting overnight, you are getting the full closure of east bay 80. highway 4 to the coming skyway, and your alternate will be surface streets or you get over to the benicia bridge. that will be all weekend long, again, but right now, again, normal morning commute. back to you. >> thank you. i hate to be the berrer of

downgrade. the top democrat in the senate, chuck schumer, and the top republican in the house, kevin mccarthy, have been talking. they are going to kick the can down the road, and everybody is angry with kevin mccarthy, and he may be speaker of the house, but he has a lot of forces working against him, and by extension working against the future funding of the government. president biden celebrated the

one-year inflation reduction act. that allocates billions to reduce medical insurance costs. >> we now have more jobs than we did before the pandemic, and workers are not just finding jobs but better jobs with higher pay. >> the prosecutor in georgia, meantime, the most recent to indictment donald trump says she wants to go to trial by march. many see that as nearly impossible. trump has so many cases against him, just navigating the trials will be tough. trump has a week until friday to turn himself in in atlanta, and then the prosecutor wants him back september 5th for his arraignment. former trump chief of staff, mark meadows, who was charged in that indictment wants the whole case moved from georgia state court to federal court.

that's not impossible. the law says federal court covers alleged wrong doing for anybody under the cover of government. linkedin looked at data from 178,000 u.s. employees, and it's now taking about seven weeks for perspective employees to go from submitting an application to their first day of work. in some industries it's taking longer, with consulting taking about nine weeks. entry-level jobs, a little quicker, about six weeks to the start day. lots of team usa soccer fans calling this the news that was not hard to see coming.

into later today. it will be slightly cooler today, as we mentioned. we are still looking at low 80s and low 90s for inland areas. the elevated fire danger continues as we are still tracking the potential of isolated lightning strikes and a few thunderstorms today. in the weekend we will see tropical moisture moving into southern california, and we will look at the impacts there. napa will reach 83 degrees. novato, 88. in hayward, look for a high of 81 degrees there. 94 in morgan hill. tomorrow the 80s, and we are seeing 90s in the inland areas. we are going to see moisture streaming in as a system causes thunderstorms over the sierra. then we turn our attention to hurricane hilary. this has strengthened over the

last few hours and is expected to intensify over the next few days becoming a major category 4 as we go into the next few days. that's off the coast of baja, california. as it moves into the cooler waters of san diego over the next few days, it's expected to weaken but will spread into a hot of heavy rain in those areas. what we are expecting as this continues to move into the area, this is going to make major headlines. in parts of southern california, we're looking at the potential of at least 1 inch of rainfall, and that will be three to four inches of rainfall that could cause flash flooding. we are looking at being on the dry side of it here, but still potential of isolated lightning strikes and thunderstorms, but one slight shift in the track could make a huge difference in

the kind of weather we will see. once again, we will keep you updated and continue to watch the track of that tropical system. it's quiet for now. we are looking at lower humidity for saturday, but it will start to change as we go into the weekend. mike, how is it looking on the bay bridge? >> changes here, too, right? we expect this. the build is happening at the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights have been on ten, 15 minutes at the most. there's a crossing getting over there at the electronic toll. and there's a little build towards the richmond toll plaza getting over towards the north bay. no surprises here. the south bay, that first burst will ease up for san josé and then the second burst coming up.
