live outside the police headquarters. do we know more about this officer? >> reporter: good morning, laura and marcus. san josé police have not yet identified her and we just heard in the last five or ten minutes that she is still in critical but stable condition at a local hospital. she has been with san josé police department for ten years, and she's the first female officer to be shot in the line of duty, and second officer to be shot this year. it was around yesterday at 8:00, and she and her partner responded to a family dispute call. a woman called police and said her husband was drunk and trying to hit her. one of the officers called out to the front door balcony of the home, and that's when the 34-year-old husband came out and

shot the officer in the torso outside of her bullet proof vest. >> what happened next is courage. without hesitation or consideration for himself, the officer's partner extracted the victim officer from the line of fire to a place of safety where he began to treat her injuries. >> this is video of the suspect being arrested after a four-hour standoff with police. he was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. turns out he is a convicted felon on probation here in santa clara county. police say they also recovered a firearm. an assembly evan low that represents silicon valley tweeted out it was his brother that pulled the injured officer to safety. he wrote, quote, please send

it's 40% contained and no homes are threatened. there's new calls for accountability in the wake of last week's firestorm in maui. the cause is still under investigation, but the authorities are looking more closely at downed power lines. some believe high's power company responded too slowly to the hurricane-force winds. five companies have filed suit against the utility and maui county. the president and first lady plan to visit maui. one couple yesterday finally visited their property, walking into the burn zone on foot because cars are still not allowed. they worked past barricades and burned homes in the neighborhood, and while the flames spared their home, for

7-eleven, they are happening all too frequently. others say prostitution is driving some of the customers away. critics are saying police often never respond to the crimes. the things are tied to the smaller crimes they believe are what making situations worst. >> i need more help. >> without police, the cops, that will be a bad situation. the employee -- i can't stop those people. >> the opd did open a neighborhood substation last year and while many people say that's helping improve the situation, they also say it's still not enough. we all know trying to make it in the bay can be difficult, but san josé is among one of the best cities in the u.s. to raise a family. it was ranked second when it comes to the most desirable place for families. it was the only california city

to make the top 25. some of the matrix include crime and cost of living. this is a live look for you right here. the san diego skyline. they are starting to feel the impact from hurricane hilary. it was just upgraded from a tropical storm, and it's expected to deliver widespread rain and winds. this is the predicted path of the storm. right now it's churning off the coast of mexico, and next week the remnants will arrive in the bay area. and not only are we worried about that, but the lightning it could bring. >> that area is not prepared for

hurricanes. >> it will not be a hurricane by the time it reaches san diego, because the water is too cool, the water needs to be 70 degrees or higher to maintain that hurricane intensity. but it's going to intensify to a category 4 over the next few days as it moves closer to baja, california, and it's moving to the west at 13 miles per hour. that's expected to be strong, but as it moves over the cooler water as it approaches san diego, it will continue to weaken but it will have a big impact in terms of how much rain we are going to see. as we look at the track of that storm, it really depends on where it goes, but that tropical rain affecting southern california the most with the mountains getting possibly over an inch of rainfall, and the bay area could see scattered showers

we are watching out for a slight chance of thunderstorms firing up again today. it has been a high concern because if we get lightning strikes that could start off a new wildfire. we have also see a little rain coming up with it, but not enough to put out any fires. we will watch over the weekend, hurricane hilary as it is expected to make it up to a category 4. as it moves into the cooler water approaching southern california, it will weaken but spread a lot of ran across the region. and something typically we don't see, especially with all the heavy rainfall that could cause flash flooding. with it moving into san diego around sunday, and then continuing to move northward over towards nevada. when we see tropical systems on the western side, it tends to be drier. we could be on the drier end of this tropical system, but still

scattered showers and possibly lightning developing late monday into tuesday with a lot of rain over towards the sierra and further towards the east. a slight jog in that track could make a huge difference of how much rain we could see and the impact here in the bay area. check in for the latest updates, especially this weekend. as we go into the next several days, it's looking nice here. we get a break from the high humidity especially on saturday. san francisco will see temperatures in the upper 60s. storm chances increasing monday and tuesday. mike, how are the lanes at the bay bridge? >> they have filled in. it was a gradual fill in. you see traffic slowing where we initially saw the slowing in the crossover on 880. all lanes are moving, and the lanes are not fully filled in, and trust me, that's not bad. richmond slowing cleared up, and

expand? >> yeah, and marcus and laura there could be an unexpected stop to the expansion of robo taxis in san francisco, at least that's what the city's attorney office is trying to do by filing administrative motions asking the california public utilities commission to suspend the unrestricted commercial expansion. here's why. you are looking at some of the confusion and congestion some driverless cars have caused in san francisco. there's a driverless car stopped before drive into a construction zone, and then eventually pulling over to the wrong side of the road. over the weekend we saw a whole slew of cruz cars stopping and the company says a pedestrian

intentionally interfered with the car that created a chain reaction. now, last week's decision from the cpuc gave the crean light for companies like cruz and waymo to expanded. san francisco will suffer serious harm from expansion -- it adds since the launch of driverless operations members of the public and city employees reported more than 600 incidents of driverless ev operations that interfered with street operations. our senior investigative reporter has been look into the debate around autonomous taxis themselves, and he said they are the first to admit the technology is not perfect. >> they do say, however, once

the cr, they will kick the can down the road. the bad news, everybody is angry at mccarthy. the republicans to his right, they say he should not have made a deal with president biden, that's why they are angry, and democrats to the left are angry because mccarthy violated the deal over the funding levels. speaker of the house is a powerful position, but he has a lot of forces working against him and by extension working against the future funding of our government. president biden celebrated the one-year anniversary of the so-called inflation reduction act. the $430 billion package includes record spending on climate and energy policies and allocates billions to reduce medical insurance costs. >> we now have more jobs than we did before the pandemic. and workers are not just finding more jobs, but better jobs,

higher pay and higher job satisfaction. unemployment is down and so is inflation. >> the prosecutor in georgia, the most recent to indictment donald trump says she wants to go to trial by march, which many see as impossible. that would mean the most complicated charges against trump would go first. just navigating the trials will be tough. trump has a week from friday to turn himself in to atlanta, and then the prosecutor wants him back the week of september 5th for his arraignment. and then chief of staff, mark meadows, who was also charged in the indictment wants the whole case moved from georgia to federal court, which is not impossible. the law says federal court covers cases when wrong doing was alleged by somebody under the color of a federal office, and it would be hard to argue the president of the united states, trying to stay the

it's thicker than yesterday so it will linger longer, and that will help to cool the inland areas, especially with a west wind. let's go above the fog in san francisco from our sutro tower camera where you can only see the top of the salesforce tower, and we are seeing the fog deeper. it will stay over the city longer and provide a slight cooldown for the inland valleys. yesterday we were hitting the upper 90s. 93 is expected today in concord. a little cooler. we are going to head for 94 in morgan hill. san josé today reaching 86 degrees. slightly cooler tomorrow as well as we get a stronger breeze. that will be a nice start to the weekend where we will watch a lot going on. i am monitoring a chance for isolated showers and thunderstorms. a lot of it will stay further to the north of us, but any

lightning strikes could start a new wildfire and that has been a concern because of the lack of rainfall with some of the thunderstorms that have been moving through. we are also watching now hurricane hilary over southwestern mexico's coast. it's over very warm water and continues to strengthen. right now it's a category 1 with winds at 75 miles per hour, and it's expected to briefly become a category 4 hurricane off the coast of cabo, and as it moves towards the san diego area it is expected to weaken quite a bit. as it makes its northward track it will be over the tahoe area with the current forecast we have. we are expecting the potential of the track to change a bit, and that could drastically change where we see the impacts

of the system. the rain is spreading into baja, california, and then we can see it's going to continue to spread out as it weakens, but we, on the drier side of the system, could still see spotty showers and possibly lightning strikes that would once again enhance the wildfire risk as we go into early next week. we will be closely watching that, because just a minor jog in the east or west could change what we see here in the bay area. we are in for a quiet weekend, but watching those thunderstorm chances early next week. mike, you are seeing some new spots in the commute? >> new, but not expected. approaching highway 37, that's holding steady but there's slowing as it approaches 121. a smooth flow of traffic buildings here for the walnut creek area, and the live camera is right here. we have a smooth low of traffic,
