7:00. a live look outside, sun is shining in santa clara but a lot of the bay area staying with cloudy skies. we expect it to warm up today as we look forward to the weekend. thank you so much for starting your weekend with us. i'm kira klapper. before we get to cinthia with our microclimate forecast, we have breaking news out of the east bay where a sheriff's deafty is in the hospital after a police chase ended in a crash. it happened just after 2:00 this morning. you see the damage. conta costa dep pis chasing a white silverado truck. the chase continued from 580 to highway 24 where the deputies were involved in a crash with that suspect. the deputy was transported to the hospital. the suspect is in custody right now. the chp tells us it's unknown how that crash happened.

the condition of the deputy is unknown as well. we will continue to follow this story and bring you updates throughout our newscast. all right. going to turn now to cinthia with a look at our microclimate forecast. hey, cinthia. >> good morning, kira. good morning, everyone. if you look out the door and over to the coastline, starting with our typical fog around the bay area. taking a look. over the bay bridge span mixing out eventually and should see plenty of sunshine around the bay. seeing a nice day with 80s to low 90s inland. no triple-digit heat we're tracking for the bay area. i think overall a nice saturday for you to do any kind of errands you have to. of course, the big weather headline is hurricane hilary which is already starting to push on through mexico into southern california. by tonight on into tomorrow, up here in the bay area, could feel a little more humidity in the air as this storm does eventually downgrade. what is it right now?

a category 4 hurricane with winds of 130 miles an hour as it still goes over cabo, closer to the border, starts to weaken to a category 2 or 1. oncemakes landfall in california it will be a tropical storm. more on what that means and what the impacts potentially could be for the area coming up. back to you. >> you mentioned hurricane hilary currently a category 4 moving up the pacific with southern california in its sights. it is expected to be downgraded, cinthia just said to a tropical storm as it nears our state. still, this is something most californians have never experienced. in fact, the last time a tropical storm hit our state was back in 1939. 84 years ago. "today in the bay" has a look at how the storm could impact us here in the bay area. especially those of us with travel plans.

>> reporter: as hurricane hilary races towards california, scrambling to get back home before it makes landfall. >> my boyfriend called two days ago. there's a hurricane coming. i got so scared and so nervous. >> reporter: saying she canceled plans here in the bay area for the rest of the weekend, and booked a flight back to san diego tonight to prepare for a historic event. >> get a bunch of rope so trees don't crash into neighbors and in our own space. tons of friends on the beach getting sandbags and preparing for floods. >> we're off. >> reporter: despite the storm this south bay couple decided last minute to move forward with their anniversary trip to san diego. >> forget it. let's go. see it, we'll see it. >> reporter: others taken back to san diego for sunday other monday, their flights already impacted. warnings of possible delays and

cancellations. >> text 2:49, boarding in a flight to come here. >> reporter: and a teeper in san diego says districts are talking about canceling school monday. both san diego and los angeles preparing for the worst a. regional event. this will impact not just l.a. county but all of southwestern california, potentially arizona and nevada also. so our responsibility right now is heavily leaning into coordination, support. >> reporter: families stocking up on supplies, laying down sandbags and bracing for floods at a time fires should be the biggest threat. reporting for "today in the bay." of course, we'll keep um with the latest on hilary all this weekend. california emergency officials will hold a news conference to update the state's response to the hurricane. that is set for noon today. when we're off the air, get the very latest updates on our website, nbcbayarea.com or the

news app. get all of that info sent straight your phone. going to turn now to the debate over driverless cars. the dmv says it's asked cruise to immediately reduce its fleet by 50% until it completes an investigation into recent incidents in san francisco. that means no more than 50 driverless cars operating during the day, and 150 driverless cars at night. it comes just one week after state regulators gave the green light to expand robotaxi service in the city as part of san mateo county. our investigative unit followed the story closely and obtained documents that shows self-driving cars have been involved in at least 280 crashes over the past five years across california. this one you see here happened on thursday in san francisco. a cruise car colliding with a fire truck. cruise tells us the robotaxi had a green light and was making a

turn when the crash happened. sf pedestrian said the fire trucks had its lights and sirens on. in a statement, the dmv says it "reserves the right following investigation of the facts to suspend or revoke testing and/or deployment permits if there is determined to be an unreasonable risk to public safety." cruise, meanwhile, sent us a statement saying in part "we believe it's clear that cruise positively impacts overall road safety and look forward to working with the california dmv to make any improvements and provide any data they need to reinforce the safety and efficiency of our fleet." we're going to turn now to the contra costa district attorney who announced new criminal charges against five police officers. they are accused of taking bribes in exchange for voiding traffic citations. this brings this number to

officers charged in just the last two days. this week we he told you about federal charges brought against officers from pittsburg and antioch involved in crimes like fraud. distribution of steroids. using excessive force. the indictments follow an 18-month investigation into an alleged criminal network. as part of that probe, the fed seized the officers' cell phones and stumbled upon racist and homophobic text messages among dozens of officers. the civil rights attorney is glad the officers are being held accountable for their actions. >> this is outrageous moral conduct really raises the question about, in my view, the fundamental honesty of police officers and willingness so easily to subvert the system by taking care of their friends. >> both pittsburg and antioch police departments have not

responded to our requests for comment. the california department of justice has been called to investigate a debtly police shooting that happenedness martinez. just before 3:30 yesterday morning when officers responded to an alarm at the velvet cannabis dispensary. officers say they found two cars and ultimately officers opened fire. one person was killed, a second sustained some sort of injury, but it's unclear if they were sought. the police say one officer suffered a minor injury in that confrontation. state law requires the department of justice to investigate which a police shooting ends in the death of an unarmed person. features at a south bay high school demanding more safety measures after two students were stabbed on campus. both recovering in the hospital. some staff at james lick high school say it wasn't an isolated

incident. we have video that was taken back on august 7th of a fight breaking out on just the third day of school. this video posted to social media appearing to show several people beating one student. police say a staff member also was hurt and had to be taken to the hospital. teachers say both last week and that attack have one common thread. the aggressors were not associated with the school. >> this is a very, very serious incident, in my mind. something that's super high alert and needs to be done immediately. >> we reached out to the school district to ask about specific safety upgrades and it is looking at, and so far no response. happening today, several bay area fire departments are working together to help those impacted by the maui fires. the fill the boot for maui fund-raiser is being hosted by local unions across the south bay.

boots set up in cities you see on your screen, like gilroy, san jose, santa clara, mountain view, palo alto. accepting all kinds of donations including money, food and supplies. all proceeds will go to the hawaiian fire foundation. cal fire and santa clara county also helping raise donations. this one-day fund-raising event begins at 10:00 a.m. this morning at the gilroy outlets. santana row and the stanford shopping center. and groups rallying in an attempt to oust alameda county's newest district attorney. earlier this week alameda county accepts a notice of intent signed by 127 residents to recall d.a. pamela price. price faces accusations that she is soft on crime and her progressive policies increased crime in the county. the d.a. has only been in office for eight months.

price has about a week left to respond to the recall notice and after that a committee can gather more than 90,000 legal signatures required to put the issue on a ballot. the group is inviting community members together today for a recall rally at the alameda county courthouse at 1:00 p.m. time, 7:12. much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, a little too close for comfort. the mountain lion that ventured into a bay area neighborhood prompting nearby schools to shelter in place.

welcome back. it is 7:14 on your saturday morning. gloomy, cloudy skies over oakland right now. but we expect those to give way to sunshine. temperatures in the low 70s. cinthia pimentel will be along with your full microclimate forecast in just a few minutes. first, former president donald trump is expected to turn himself in, in georgia, by end of next week. that's what three senior law enforcement officials familiar with the plan are telling nbc news. they anticipate the former president will surrender at a jail in fulton county, just around atlanta, next thursday or friday. trump and 18 other co-defendants were indicted on monday. they're charged with racketeering and conspiracy in connection with efforts to overturn the 2020 election. this is trump's fourth

indictment. he has denied any wrongdoing. back here locally, new video from the sierra where president biden is in the lake tahoe area. air force one touched down in reno last night. the white house says the president will spend the weekend at the lake. no public events have been announced. the president originally was scheduled to stay longer, but will now fly to maui on monday to meet with first responders and families of those wildfire victims. a mountain lion caused some excitement of some sort on the peninsula. nerves as well. someone spotted this big cat in a san mateo neighborhood yesterday morning. police say other neighbors saw it near vanessa drive and south grant streets. officers launched a search of surrounding neighborhoods and advised nearby schools to shelter in place. police, though, were not able to find any trace of that mountain lion.

they shared on social media it had likely gone back home. another heads up for drivers this weekend. a stretch of i-80 closed aga for roadwork. all eastbound lanes arelosed between highway 4 and hercules and cummings skyway in crockett. crews need the timeo repave the freeway. this stretch of 80 will be back open early monday morning. the second annual prom on the prom will the taking place as the jfk promenade in san francisco. it's a fun event where people can relive their old prom night memories just one more time. it will be a live deejay, a prom court. all sorts of other activities. people of all ages welcome and encouraged to dress up. it is free and starts at 5:00. it's prom night, reliving, really isn't your thing and looking for something else to do this weekend we have you covered in this weekend's calendar.

70s to low 80s. like out in mountain view at 80 degrees. once we go on into the valleys, seeing some low 90s pop on the board. i think today's a spectacular day before we start to feel changes later tonight on into tomorrow. i see temperatures coming up just a few degrees. ober on in concord, livermore and through the santa clara valley but feeling more sticky as we track more moisture coming in from hurricane hilary. what's going on allowing the storm to push so close to california? a system of low pressure off the coast. high pressure around the desert southwest. that's allowing it all to funnel through bringing in that humidity and those chances of rain. so how is this going to play out day by day? l.a., san diego, already under a tropical storm warning. first time ever issued for southern california. really, if you have anybody that lives in socal through the deserts and the mountains, make

sure that they are prepared. i say latest, 12:00, 1:00 today. this storm pushes through tonight on into tomorrow morning seeing the heaviest of impacts roll through and we're going to see some record-breaking possibly amounts of rain, strong winds associated with this and possible flooding that continues to push on through monday. some of the sierra, some of lake tahoe also seeing that. what does it mean for the bay area? seeing remnants of this tropical storm. once this storm does hit california it will no longer be a hurricane. it will be a tropical storm. by monday we're seeing chances of pop-up showers here and not crazy amounts for us but look at this light up through the southern sierra, through l.a. five, six, seven inches of rain possible there. of course, we'll keep an eye on this all weekend long as it gets closer to us. meantime leave you with our seven-day forecast. 70s in san francisco. with a chance of rain in our

in our "bay area proud" segment we often highlight kindness of people, and over the last week and a half so many stories have emerged as people helping those on maui. "today in the bay's" garvin thomas has this story in this morning's "bay area proud." >> reporter: for two places, 2,000 mimes apart, the bay area and hawaii remarkably close to each other. close enough that when one hurts the other feels its pain. bhut maui burned, those on this side of the pacific were not close enough to put out the flames. we had to help in different ways. and so we did. there was john mark batista who grew up in menlo park but lost more man a dozen family members. felt something to do something, so he walked over night and into the day until reaching 100 miles

raising $70,000 for people he loved to people he didn't know. >> amazing support out there and people could relate to me on a personal level without really even knowing me or my family. >> amazing. i could really, i just -- i haven't thanked every person individually. >> reporter: a former san francisco chef who lost everything in the fire. he's now reviving a collective he started during covid to help feed the people of maui. depending on donations from the bay area, to make it happen. >> basically use my chef skills to manage teams, try to lead people in the right direction. gain awareness and use my platform, which i didn't even know i had at this point. >> reporter: but it's not just individuals. it's real estate agents gathering supplies. a pizza parlor donating for each hawaii pizza sold and a hotel donating proceeds from a hawaiian brunch. who knows how many millions are

area. ahead of a brand new weekend. welcome to it. you made it! thank you so much for starting it with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel joins us with a peek of our microclimate forecast, and it looks like a good one. hey, cinthia. >> good morning, kira. i love the enthusiasm there. yes, a nice day around the bay area. take a look at some highs. 70s in downtown san francisco there in the mission low 80s napa and wine country. of course, warmer as is the bay area once you do head into the inland valleys. see 91 in livermore. 92 down in morgan hill. biggest story of the weekend into next week will be the impact of hilary. right now still a category 4 hurricane over mexico. once it does make landfall in california, it's going to be a tropical storm. it's going to bring a lot of rain. it's going to be bringing strong winds through san diego, through the mountains, and also going to be possibly making for some

treacherous roads out there. localized flooding. we're going to talk about all of the impacts in its path and how itpotentially impact the bay, too. >> thank you. a sheriff's deputy now in the hospital after being involved in chase that ended in a crash. it started just after 2:00 a.m. you can see the damage to that contra costa county sheriff's deputy car. they were trying to pull over this white silverado truck around eastbound 580 in oakland. the chase then continued to highway 24. that's where the deputies were involved in a crash with that suspect. the deputy was transported to the hospital. we are told that multiple people are now in custody. the chp is investigating what led to that crash. we are working to get an update on that deputy's condition. >> back to the weather now. and hurricane hilary.

cinthia mentioned it is heading up the pacific with southern california in its sights. it is set to arrive by tonight. a lot of people will spend the day filling up sandbags and there are many places to do that, including fire stations across the south. nbc 4's bailey miller is in long beach. concern for flooding and high surf. >> reporter: a beautiful and calm morning here in long beach. hard to believe what may be to come. i'm standing in the peninsula, an area known to flood during heavy rains and high swells. this is exactly why the city set up this large sand berm to protect those ocean-front homes in the distance. many people here are not taking hurricane hilary lightly. take a look. people picking up sandbags to reinforce homes and the city says they have the right idea. they're advising people in this area to prepare for high tides and possible flooding, and we know this was an area hit hard

by last winter's storms and residents along the peninsula here don't want to take any chances. >> in a flood zone near the l.a. river area. hoping for the best and until it blows over. but kind of hard too say. better safe than sorry. really battening down hatching everywhere we can. >> reporter: this sand berm can about common sight during winter months. not so much do we see it in august, but the city is prepared. an area that flooded during the last tropical storm in 1939 causing dozens of deaths. back out here in long beach right now, you can see it is very calm out here. there's fishermen out here and waves are almost non-existent right now, but we all know that could change soon. send it back to you. >> thank you from our sister station in los angeles. we are going to keep up with the latest on hilary all weekend. california emergency officials will hold a news conference at noon today to update the state's

project. the reason why is because it's right in the heart of millbrae. >> give this a chance. >> we've got these facilities all over the county. they're worried about crime. worried about assaults. worried about drugs and mental health. impacting the neighborhood. that has just not been our experience. >> if san mateo county gets funding to move forward the facility would be operated by episcopal community services, promising 24/7 staffing on site. turning back now to our maui coverage and the grim search for the missing continues in lahaina. 114 people are now confirmed dead and that number is only expected to rise. more than 1,000 people still remain unaccounted for. the island's top emergency official resigned, you may have heard, after criticism of his decision not to sound the emergency alarm. in a video statement, governor

welcomed with open arms at the hayward executive airport last night. the pets were then taken to six local animal shelters. the executive director berkeley rue main spearheaded the effort after seeing the devastation on maui. despite the fact many bay area shelters are already at capacity. we're all full. >> each shelter decides when the pets go up for adoption, but we know that berkeley humane for its part says these animals from maui will be ready for their forever homes during our nbc sponsored "clear the shelters" event. that is next saturday, august 26th. and we are helping t "clear the shelters" all this month. we have two pet adoption events this weekend. today, you can go to the san francisco spca or oakland zoo

good morning. 7:43. a check in on our local forecast before we do get to the details of hilary. it's going to be a cloudy start to the day, but mixing out to see sunshine. we'll see some 70s to low 80s to some low 90s in inland valleys and fairfield at 93. tomorrow temperatures bump up a little and it will feel a little bit more humid when we go into those mid-90s in the valley. cool down monday. 70s to low 80s as all of that moisture starts to push on through. where is hillary now and what are the impacts going to be for southern california and for us here in the bay area? currently a category 3 hurricane. it's downgrading, just about 30 minutes ago at a category 4. we see it's losing symmetry there, meaning this storm is starting to die down as it reaches the colder waters along

the border. as we look at satellite and radar, these outer bands there of the hurricane sometimes bring about thunderstorms and some heavy rain. it's already pushing through parts of el centro, through palm springs and moving through the high desert. i'm not ruling out us getting some of that moisture tonight on into tomorrow with a possibility of pop-up showers to the south and east of the bay area. look at this storm hour-by-hour as i guide you through some of those impacts. tonight into tomorrow, into monday, some of these heavier amounts of rain over los angeles, san diego, through the death valley, going see heavy amounts of rain. strong winds out there in the beaches, and on the mountain ridges. upwards of maybe 80 miles an hour. make sure you're calling friends and family in southern california, checking in if they are okay. this is the first time southern california is under a tropical storm warning, and the first time we're seeing conditions like this.

welcome back. 7:48 on your saturday morning. cloudy skies. fogust, we affectionately call it across the bay area this morning. giving way to sunny skies. temperatures around the 70s today as we look forward to another warm week. as children return to school, doctors are urging parents to make sure their children are up-to-date with immunizations. "today in the bay"s scott la gru talks to one pediatrician who thinks annual inoculation should include the covid vaccine. >> reporter: students going back to school some may have fallen behind in immunizations because

familying were nervous taking healthy kids to a doctor during a pandemic. you know, california requires children be vaccinated against different here to ra, tetanus, hepatitis b, measles, rubella and chicken pox. schools require proof to enroll in transitional kinder or kirnd gart -- kindergarten and again in seventh grade. compliance in annual audit. goal, 95% vaccination creating herd immunity protecting the few who cannot be vaccinated. nationwide the cdc found immunization for mmr for kindergartners fell by 2%, equals more than a million people. in california 96% of kindergartners vaccinated in the same period. a south bay pediatrician urges parents to make sure their kids are up-to-date with the mandatory and the optional ones.

welcome back. here's a quick look at top stories we're following on this saturday morning including a deputy in the hospital after a police chase ended in a crash. you can see the extensive damage to the contra costa county sheriff's patrol car. this happened just after 2:00

this morning when deputies tried to pull over this white silverado in oakland. the chase continued to highway 24 where the two cars collided near macarthur boulevard in oakland. the chp tells us multiple suspects are in custody. the deputy was transported to the hospital. their conditions on known at this time. we will continue to follow this story and bring you updates on our website throughout the day today. back now to hurricane hilary. currently a category 4 hurricane moving up the pick. you see people in southern california filling up sandbags in anticipation of the rain and flooding. hilary is expected to be downgraded to a tropical storm as it nears our state, but still something most californians never experienced. the last time a tropical storm hit our state was back in 1939, 84 years ago. as you can see, people are preparing for that to make landfall.
