7:01 am

welcome back. on thursday, law enforcement in fulton county, georgia, expect former president trump to turn himself in for processing as trump and 18 others were charged with racketeering and conspiracy. let's turn now to chuck todd, moderator of "meet the press." as always, chuck, thanks for joining us this morning. chuck, as i understand it, you have exclusive interviews this morning. you also have a legal panel of former federal and state prosecutors who are discussing trump's fourth indictment. what sort of insight are we getting on defense strategies, timelines, that time of thing? >> well, look, i think -- i've
7:13 am
got the prosecutors here to explain the like hihood of which trials might happen in 2024, which won't. i think the things you'll learn, the manhattan indictment would go ahead, that the prosecutor there would be willing to step aside, and let the feds prosecute their cases first. there was pretty much agreement that the -- of the two federal cases that the one about overturning the election in 2020 and january 6th, that was the most likely to happen in 2024. and the big georgia one, which we spent quite a few minutes on as well, that, you know, it's such a large case, a rico case, 19 people charged in that big indictment. that's the expectation, sort of like, okay, nobody expects all 189 to be tried together -- 19 to be tried together.
7:14 am
some people will cooperate, some will get dropped. how quickly dose that process happen? the assumption is that is a process that will lengthen the time before we see a trial there. so it really gives a lot of clarity, what to expect, what comes next. bottom line, it's the 2020 federal trial here in washington, d.c. that most of this legal panel believes will be first. >> will be first. and then the latest georgia one, you just mentioned they want to begin next year, but trump's team wants to push it out to 2026. so it will be interesting how it coincides with the candidacy for president coming up. >> you're going to need a scorecard to keep track of it. >> and we know you are guiding us. chuck, thanks for joining us this morning with that preview. we hope you join chuck for thong's "meet the press." in addition to the legal panel on trump's indictment, chuck will have these two exclusive

let's see what the seven-day has in store. prepare to feel a little bit more muggy out there, humid. these numbers are going to run a little warmer than yesterday, and that moisture will push on through, especially towards the santa clara valley, the east bay. 93 in concord. 94 in fairfield. and the immediate bay, also going to see a mild day with 83 in hayward. what can we expect the next couple of hours? we are tracking the latest with what will be tropical storm hillary if the next couple of hours as it moves over san diego and los angeles, the desert. but that's not going to rule out a chance for some thunderstorms here in the bay area, too, as that moisture pushes on through. the showers are going to continue for monday here in the bay area. we're tracking all of that moisture. the storm is starting to become
7:44 am
a little less organized. as it goes into the deserts and mountains, that could create more lift to drop a lot of rain in a short amount of time. picking up lightning near monterey. it was near hollister a couple of hours ago. that moisture is wrapping around sacramento and out towards the marin county coastline. let's time it for you so you can maybe share the message with your friends and family down in los angeles. by around mid morning, seeing heavy amounts of rain near the border, off the coast of san diego. going to be very gusty, and just down right nasty, as the storm pushes on through. los angeles, going to see heavy rain through catalina, through this afternoon and into tonight. that storm continues to take that turn there through the evening hours, just going to be atrocious amounts oh of rain. make sure you're telling people to stay put. avoid any travel. those rain rates could be upwards of seven inches. a short amount of time, the places in the death valley area,

never see that amount of rain in the whole year. if you can imagine that, it will be a lot of rain. as we push on through, get a closer look of the bay area, not going to rule out a shower or two, passing us through the north bay. more of the moisture comes in, later overnight tonight into our commute. the start of school for kids could be a wet one around the bay area. the showers will push on through, and better clearing as we go into your tuesday and wednesday. tomorrow, temperatures will be cooler as w do see all of that cool weather passing, unsettled in san francisco to start our workweek. the numbers are still very mild in the 70s. inland valleys, just have to watch out for a chance of showers over the next couple of days and the heat. >> all right. good to have that warning. cinthia, thanks. it's

welcome back. a new study finds exposure to
7:48 am
the common cold may have helped you build some immunity to covid. they found people who had colds had immune responses that could be protecting them from covid infections. researchers are hoping to use those findings to develop a new vaccine to fight future covid variants. as of this morning, seven republican presidential hopefuls will participate in the first gop primary debate in milwaukee this coming wednesday. former president donald trump will skip the debate and five others have not yet met the debate requirements. larry gerston joins us. good morning. great to see you as always. why such a low turnout for this debate, out of what, 13, only 7 are making it. >> one thing, a bit of news just happened, asa hutchinson says he's qualified. so that could be eight.
7:49 am
well, there are a lot of things to talk about in terms of why they qualify or not. you have a series of requirements, 40,000 donors across the nation, but it's got to be 200 at least in 20 states. and then you have to poll 1% in three national polls or 1% in two national polls and two state surveys. so you put it together, that's tough requirements. and then you've got, bingo, the loyalty signature. will hurd won't sign it, so he's out automatically. so there is a fine list of interesting people here. and it looks like in addition that asa hutchinson has qualified, at least that's what he says. the rnc will review that by monday. >> and that loyalty pledge promises to support the eventual candidate. >> whoever he or she may be.
7:50 am
>> and why is trump skipping this debate? it would seem important, or at least they used to be important. >> it's certainly important to the rest of them. a couple of reasons here. number one, he's saying to himself why should i debate when in fact i've got a 40-point lead over the closest competitor? good chance of me screwing up perhaps, why take that chance? a second reason, it's vintage trump, he's mad at fox. why is he mad at fox? fox declared -- we have to go back, in 2020, arizona, which clinched the election, of course, for joe biden, he says fox called it way too soon. after all, there are all kinds of shenanigans, even though two audits found out there are none. so he's mad at fox. but he's not going to be there, at least this time, and maybe next time, as well. >> and there are rumors he's looking for count programming, maybe an interview with tucker carlson to air at the same time
7:51 am
of the debate. so what are you, as a professional, looking for in this debate? >> i think there are four qualities we want to see as to how this turns out. the first is substance. what kind of substance is going on? this real discussion are we going to see going on with these candidates? or is it going to be the nitpicking kind of stuff where nobody cares about the real issues. we also want to wonder about cannibalism. when i say "cannibalism," what i'm saying is that are they going to turn on each other to try to knock each other out, and in the process, make themselves look better? well, perhaps that's good in the short term. but how are people going to think about these guys in the long-term? then the question is, who might be eliminated? we say eliminate, nobody gets pulled out of there, but if you find out that you do such a poor job, there goes your money. it burns up and nobody else will
