here in our nbc bay area studios. so far, there are no reports of any serious damage nor injuries, but the area is still being rattled by smaller aftershocks. our weather team has been keeping an eye on hilary since early last week, and for a look at where she's heading, let's turn to meteorologist kari hall. good morning. happy monday to you. >> we had a wild weekend. >> happy monday. yes, what a weekend. one for the record books, as we still deal with this. let's be clear now that the tropical storm hilary had absolutely nothing to do with the rthqeake, so the two are not related, but just happened to occur at the same time. as we are now in the bay area seeing this rain moving through, we are seeing some scattered showers off and on, a lot of lightning staying off the coast. but you can see the system that is spinning across the region, some of the heavier rain is now over the tahoe area and off to the east near reno, and affecting a good portion of nevada at this point.
5:03 am
as we get a look at what to expect, we are going to continue to see that rain off and on throughout the morning, and we are seeing some showers now moving into parts of the north bay. so what's next for us? it's just going to be really muggy and at times some showers. also a chance of thunderstorms for today. but once all of this clears out, starting tomorrow, temperatures will be heating up and we're talking about temperatures in the valleys reaching into the mid-90s and even triple digits. so we'll have more on that and also an hour-by-hour forecast for what to expect with that rain coming up a little bit later. >> muggy and 90s. thanks so much. we're going to stick with hilary, now a post tropical storm, it walloped warts of southern california, with many places receiving record rainfall just for this time of year. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell is in the newsroom tracking the overnight developments. what's the latest? we've seen so many different things on social media, people

failures that led to that heavy flooding we saw during the huge new year's eve storm. you may remember the first of the year the storm packed about 5 inches of rain that led to extensive flooding in neighborhoods near the san mateo creek and marina lagoon. tonight council members will examine a newly released report finding that the damage was made worse by multiple pump engine failures, including a backup pump that never took over. also, several alarms never sounded to alert city staffers. about three hours from now, president biden and the first lady will board air force one in reno to visit the devastated island of maui. the number of confirmed deaths is now up to 114 people. a short time ago maui's mayor issued a first update on the number of missing. he says 850 people are still unaccounted for, and this is the first official estimate on the number of misngince the fire nearly two weeks ago.

27 victims now have been identified. meanwhile, bay area residents are gathering supplies for fire survivors at malloy's tavern in colma last night. they collected everything from personal care items and clothing to water filtration items and bathroom supplies. two local restaurants also took part donating all revenues to the effort. a bay area family with roots on maui organized this event. the president today will visit lahaina and meet with survivors. "today in the bay"'s brie jackson takes a closer look at what we can expect from his visit. >> reporter: as the death toll from the deadly wildfires in maui rises, president biden preparing to take on a now-familiar role of consoler in chief when he travels to the island today to see the devastation. >> he's also going to be able to talk with people and hear their stories and provide a sense of hope and assurance that the federal government is going to be with them as he has directed.

wind we have picking up as the remnants of hilary move to the east of us. we're still seeing the smoke travel into the bay area, and for today at times the air quality may be a little worse, especially from areas from san francisco on northward, where there may be a higher concentration of some of that near-surface smoke as we go into toy. watching out for that as the fires burn and we are seeing scattered showers. the cloud cover today will keep temperatures a little lower, but it won't feel nicolar because it's going to be so humid today. after we see the clouds clearing out, temperatures will be heating up. we'll have more on that in a few minutes. over the weekend, we had a full weekend closure. how is that shaping up? >> it seems as though everything opened on time, in fact, a couple of lanes opened early. we saw the backup that we had seen all weekend that has cleared from the upper eastshore freeway, so let's say all lanes are open. i'll let you know if we hear

hilary's arrival to speed up access to emergency services. no tropical storm has made landfall in southern california since 1939. perfect time for meteorologist kari hall to join us. you have been monitoring this, really, since last week. how are conditions looking now? >> well, it's now spreading out, as we typically see with remnants of a tropical system. the rain just expands across the region, and we're seeing quite a bit of that happening still this morning. so this is a loop of the past 24 hours. it moved all the way from southern california and is now affecting parts of the sierra and a lot of nevada still getting in on that rain as it continues to draw in that tropical moisture across the region. we've also seen scattered showers moving around parts of the north bay, so you may have light rain this morning. the good thing is that so far the lightning strikes have remained off the coast. there still will be the chance

that we could see thunderstorms going on today. as we continue to also look a little closer here, looking at the potential of muggy conditions giving way to some off and on showers for this afternoon, and any lightning strikes we see could enhance our fire danger because we haven't had the high amount of rainfall totals that they've had across southern california. so as we talk about what's been happening farther south, in addition to the rising water, they've got another major danger during these intense rainstorms like this one. it's fallen trees. we've had high wind gusts and we're getting reports of hundreds of trees toppled across southern california from orange county to the san gabriel foothills. lauren coronado from our sister station is live in sierra madre where one couple had a frightening lining night. >> reporter: that's right, a couple was inside of their bedroom when a large tree came

5:35 am
the road, obviously, blocked off as well. when we talk about all of the other downed trees in the area, our meteorologists have been tracking wind gusts as high as -- or as strong as 78 miles per hour in some areas of l.a. county. so it has been a major issue across the area and you can see one example of the damage left behind. a wind advisory, by the way, and a flood advisory is still in effect for this area here in l.a. county. so a major cleanup operation is under way this morning as crews make their way out here to clean up areas just like this across socal. reporting live, lauren coronado for "today in the bay." >> thank you so much for that report. we hope y'all stay safe down there. developing this morning, rescue crews from here in the bay area are there in southern california assisting in the storm's aftermath. >> and the storm likely will continue to cause headaches here

for travelers throughout the bay area. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live at sfo, and, ginger, even this early in the morning the storm is already impacting some flights there, is that right? >> reporter: well, good morning to you, kira. it is a busy morning here at sfo. you can take a peek there behind us at the security lines. but it is unclear ifhat' t part of the monday rush as people head back to their flights or if that is impact from tropical storm hilary. what we do know is out of sfo there are eight cancellations and five delays. that sounds like a very small number compared to the number of flights. so we're not quite sure how much of that is the storm, but that's flying out of sfo, flying into sfo there are a bit more delays, 21 delays and four cancellations. now, as you guys were just talking about there, a big focus still this morning is the amount of rainfall that tropical storm hilary has dumped and will

crew members realize there is still much work to do to ensure public safety. >> what happens in these areas of the desert where it range more five or ten nutes and the water comes down at once. >> we could see flash flood warnings continuing for the next several days in much of southern california. >> reporter: hilary now a post-tropical cyclone, but it is still bringing flooding and dangerous winds. that information according to the national hurricane center, and of course kari was talking about it. in the bay area, we will continue to monitor what the storm's impact will be on flights here at sfo, and, of course, the impact on rescue efforts as well in southern california. for now, we'll send it back to you guys in the studio. >> ginger, thank you so much for that. we'll check in with you again in a little bit. our team is going to continue tracking the storm, of course. be sure to head to nbcbayarea.com for the latest updates when we're not on the air. this is an interesting story. san jose police are investigating a case of baggage
