6:37 am
and fire atwer can coexist. >> yeah, because not everyone is getting the same amount of rainfall. lately we've seen parts of northern california remaining dry, then when we compare how many acres have burned now compared to last year at this time, we're actually ahead of what we saw last year. remember, last year we were in a drought, we were talking about how dry things were. so we've had more acres burn this year after all of that rain than last year at this point, and the average, we are still below that, but of course we know that, really, wildfire season doesn't get started until october. so here we are in august saying, okay, will things change? and we know that, also, we are no longer in a widespread drought across california. things have improved significantly. but we've also had a lot of storms, which spark some fires due to lightning. so that is also another concern, something that could be an igniter for these fires. >> wenow k the rain often helps those little small grasses grow
6:38 am
that dry out really fast, but at this time of year there's also the consideration that the water has nowhere to go. >> right. during our dry summer months the ground hardens and our native california plants go dormant. so they are not really readily available to just soak up whatever water comes our way. when we get heavy rain fauls like we saw in southern california, it just runs off. that's why we saw so many mudslides and it runs downll. so those little fuels we're looking at are not there to really absorb that water that's coming down and to hold the ground tight. so we do still have a lot of concerns here. as we mentioned, we still have several more months to go of fire season. >> it was a nice thought. >> it's a nice thought, but at this point topical systems don't really help us out much. we take a look to the north where there's a lot of fires burning and it's affecting air quality today. let's get a look at our air quality map, as we've seen smoke
6:39 am
drifting down from those oregon fires. there's also so many fires burning in canada. right now we do have a weather setup that is drawing that smoke directly into the bay area and giving us some smoke at the same time that we've had some rain moving through. and things will start to dry out over the next couple of days. we're going to see our temperatures warming up. today we're headed for the upper 80s in the inland valleys, while our coastal areas will be in the upper 60s. tomorrow we'll head for the upper 90s. so we'll talk more about this coming up. i want to give you a look at the commute this morning as you're getting ready to step out the door. we are seeing things looking good in oakland, as well as the tri-valley, as you're traveling on 580. there is a slow go as you move toward the bay bridge toll plaza and the san mateo bridge is starting to slow down. what is this car doing? okay, we'll see how people are driving this morning. it is traffic tuesday. things usually start to slow down a bit. back to you. >> stay in line. you learn that in kindergarten,

with meteorologist kari hall. the humidity is here a little bit, too. >> it is. we haven't been able to shake it. we've had high humidity since post-tropical hilary started to move in, and all of the clouds. yesterday we had some showers sparking up in parts of the bay area, and this morning it just still feels really muggy. but that low that's bringing in all of that moisture is still off the coast, so we're going to keep it for a little while longer, eventually the humidity will be dropping and martinez will start out with some mid-60s, and then as we go throughout the day, we're going to see the sky clearing and our temperatures gradually warming up. we're only headed for mostly mid to upper 80s for the inland areas and we have this low off the coast that moves a little closer. with its counterclockwise wind, it brings in more of an ocean breeze and cooler temperatures. when it starts retreating back farther to the north, our temperatures heat up. that's what we're looking at over the next several days.
6:50 am
so our high is going from upper 80s today to lower humidity, but then some mid to upper 90s tomorrow. it's going to be hot for a couple of days, but the weekend not so bad. it's about average, what we usually see f this time in august, with our valley temperatures in the upper 80s, and we'll have a big range in temperatures. so san francisco will come back to the upper 60s, as we get the clouds and the fog coming back near the coastline. in the near term, we're looking at some warmer weather for the middle of the week. as we get out on the roads, i wanted to show you a live view of 580 cing omrough dublin where we've seen a smooth flow of traffic, no major incidents there. looking at palo alto, heading northbound in the commute direction, also, looking great there. of course, the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza, they turned on the metering lights about an hour and 20 minutes ago, so we're just seeing a slow go there. earlier there was also an accident at the treasure island off-ramp, so that slowed down
6:51 am
parts of the bay bridge. but elsewhere, we are just seeing the smooth flow of traffic, our usual slow spots on a tuesday. but as we look around the bay area, a couple of minor incidents popping up, but nothing that's really slowing things down. looking at the bay bridge drive time, it's about 20 minutes to get across, which is what we've seen for the past hour. the richmond bridge takes about 12 minutes, and then through the tri-valley it is slowing down on westbound 84, so that takes about 18 minutes. i'll keep an eye on all of this and another update in a few minutes. >> we'll check back with you, kari. 6:51 right now. happening now, the city of hayward rolling out a new program providing people who live there financial help to boost their education and training skills. it's called the learn to earn tuition assistance program. the city recently introduced it. it offers micro grants of up to $2,000 for people to update their job skills at cal state
