ahead. this is "today in the bay." this is also wednesday morning. thanks for starting your day with us. 5:00 right now. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we're going to get a look at the forecast. welcome back, mike. good to see you. we'll get to the commute in just a bit. kari, how is it looking today? >> it's going to be warmer for the inland valleys, but the coastal areas are staying nice and mild. in san francisco we've been looking forward to more sunshine, so we're going to get that today. here is a live look outside in oakland. you're heading out to a mostly clear sky this morning, and we're headed for the mid-80s there for today. so we're going to notice a big ramp up in temperatures, especially for the south county, with upper 90s today. dublin reaching 94 degrees, while napa will see a high of 98. heading into the today tomorrow, some of the numbers coming down a degree or two for some spots, with san jose reaching 87

degrees and 84 in mountain view. so we'll talk about what's ahead as we get closer to the weekend coming up in a few minutes. moving you forward on a new crime fighting push at a popular east bay destination, walnut creek. merchants are fed up with the burglaries and leaders are tackling the issue. bob redell is live for us outside of the police department. talk to us about what the police are deciding to do right now. >> reporter: well, good morning to you, marcus. walnut creek police did say that they arrested the person responsible for burglaries in the downtown area, burglaries that took place back in july, and last night during a community town hall they did meet with downtown business owners, like the owner of the coffee shop which was broken into. the burglar stole hundreds of dollars from her business. police say there was an uptick in robberies that took place

after hours at several downtown businesses in july, as i mentioned, which were connected to this one suspect, who was arrested on august 11th. but prior to the july uptick, police say property crime was actually down 24% for the first half of the year compared to the same time period in 2022. mccullough, who owns the coffee shop, she believes police are downplaying the issue of crime in downtown. >> they're telling us it's not as bad as we think it is. tell that to my staff and i that just got robbed and all the other business owners that were robbed. >> we have enough police on hand to prevent, deter and catch people should they come to walnut creek and look to do something criminal. >> reporter: that was the city council member, who says addressing the property crimes is a top priority for the city. last night police did say that some businesses do need to do a better job of prioritizing their own security by installing alarms and using them, setting them, so that they can apprehend

these suspects. pd says they will add more patrols, specifically during retail hours. reporting live outside walnut creek police, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we can see what can happen to a city once crime rises. we've seen what's been going on in san francisco. hopefully they can get things in a good spot. bob, thank you. 5:03 right now. to decision 2024 and tonight's gop presidential debate. the first time republican candidates take the stage together. for eight candidates this is their first real opportunity to shine, but former president trump will not attend. in fact, tomorrow he is expected to surrender to georgia authorities on criminal charges. "today in the bay"'s brie jackson is in atlanta with the full story. >> reporter: eight republican presidential hopefuls face off tonight for the first gop debate in milwaukee, wisconsin. >> i think what people can expect to see is a real vision for the country. >> reporter: the event gives candidates an opportunity to separate themselves from this crowded field.

>> i'm the only outsider in this race. everybody else is a professional politician. and i think that's one of the choices we face in this race. you want a super pac puppet or someone who speaks the truth? a lot of super pac puppets on that stage. >> reporter: former president trump is skipping the debate as his legal problems loom large over the race. the current gop front-runner has been indicted four times and plans to turn himself in to authorities in atlanta thursday. trump and 18 co-defendants face charges related to alleged efforts to overturn georgia's 2020 election results. a few of his co-defendants, including former trump lawyer john eastman, already surrendered. >> i am confident that when the law is faithfully applied in this proceeding, all of my co-defendants and i will be fully vindicated. >> reporter: trump's absence from the debate stage gives other candidates a chance to seize the spotlight. a republican national committee

san francisco robotaxi operator cruise, opponents still argue it's not enough. labor advocates in san francisco are organizing a new rally for later this morning outside of cruise headquarters. it comes after state regulators ordered cruise to cut its operating fleet in half. this is in the wake of recent crashes and traffic backups. under the new guidelines, only 50 cruise cars can operate during daytime hours. cruise issued a statement saying that they look forward to working with the dmv to make any improvements. time to get a look outside, in san francisco this morning, getting started dark and early. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect weather-wise. it's cooler, right? >> a little cooler for the coastline but the inland areas are going to heat up quickly. we are already starting out pretty warm with some upper 60s in san jose, and mid-60s for livermore and most of the parts of the east bay, for the north bay in the upper 50s. as we head to brentwood, it is

70 degrees right now and we are seeing a light wind, a clear sky, and temperatures that will start to heat up fairly quickly as we go late morning into the afternoon. we know it's going to be hotter today. we're talking upper 90s in that area, while livermore will see a high of 94. we'll see mid-80s in oakland and low 80s for san mateo. also warming up for san francisco. but this is the peak of the temperatures. after this, we'll be coming back down. i'll have a look at that and what to expect for the weekend in a few minutes. mike, you might need to fill up the gas tank. >> absolutely. we're looking for the best prices. we do have two cities on the leaderboard. mountain view hits with $4.49, continuing from last week, this time at diamond gas and mart. richmond also made the top ten, also $4.49. arco on san pablo avenue. it looks like the prices are going up a little bit. trending higher, overall. mill valley's best is up at

good wednesday morning. the time is 5:12. as you're heading out in mountain view, temperatures are in the mid-60s. they will stay there through about 7:00. after that, it's clearing out, which will happen quickly, and then our temperatures will be warmer than yesterday. we'll already be at 81 degrees at noon, so hotter today. we'll talk about what's ahead in our forecast coming up. the taillights are heading toward downtown oakland from the coliseum. it's a smooth drive, but there is a disabled vehicle i'm tracking. i'll give you the latest on the updates. there were a number of crews heading over there and now there are a number of cars. well, good morning. very happy wednesday to you. today is a big day in tech. today, after the bell, santa clara's nvidia reports profits. a lot of people are betting they're going to be big and that's why i've been talking about it every day so far this week. nvidia makes super powerful chips that power ai, and three months ago, the last time nvidia

reported, the numbers were so good the stock jumped 24% the following day. these chips are so good, the u.s. government is blocking china from buying them, and yet nvidia is selling a ton of them, at least in the united states and europe. ai has the potential to create a new boom or bubble or both. analysts at wells fargo have been looking at that. they're comparing it to the '90s and the dot-com boom. if generative ai lives up to the hype, we would expect the macroeconomic impact to be an acceleration in real gdp, real incomes and overall employment. other news, both macy's and dick's sporting goods are warning investors sales may dip as millions of americans start paying back student loans again. those payments return in the fall and average about 600 bucks a month, that's 600 bucks consumers will not be spending a sporting goods or clothes. even if you're a small business, a restaurant or a gym or boutique, this is something to

25 years is too long. >> and that album still holds. >> such a great voice. so let's get started this morning, we have kids starting school today, and a new round of kids heading back and ending the summer. so here is a live look outside in san jose. it is mostly clear this morning, and it's the first day of school for san rafael city. at drop-off time it will be in the low 60s and overall a really warm day as we head for the upper 80s, and a lot of sunshine. make sure they have a light jacket and shorts today. we're going to be warmer in the south bay as well, with milpitas hitting 87 degrees, while in gilroy we'll see a high of 96 degrees, and then moving over toward the east bay with also mid to upper 90s, danville reaching 99 and antioch headed for 99 degrees as well. in oakland, 84 degrees. so it's going to be a lot hotter

than it has been, but we'll probably feel the same because we're losing the humidity. so in san mateo we'll reach 82 degrees. then for san francisco, low to mid-70s with the mission district reaching 77 degrees. in the north bay, expect sonoma to hit a high of 91 today and 95 in ukiah. so we've seen this area of low pressure off the coast and it's been kind of waving back and forth. it really has a big influence on whether or not we are getting a stronger ocean breeze and more fog. and so it looks like over the next few days, as it lifts farther to the north, those temperatures ramp up. then as it gets closer, we'll see temperatures coming back down. so here is how it looks for concord over the next few days. we're going from upper 90s to low 90s tomorrow, and then some mid-80s. it's going to be a fairly mild weekend, but still pretty hot, with some low 90s in some of our inland areas. mostly upper 80s for other

areas, and we'll hold steady with those temperatures going into next week with some more sunshine. we're still keeping a big range in temperatures, so while it's hot in the inland areas, you can still go to san francisco and the coastline to cool off. after today, we're headed back to the 60s. mike is taking us back to downtown oakland. >> we're seeing green. no, there's the yellow again. there's a disabled big rig that continues to block one of your right lanes heading northbound, approaching broadway. they're waiting for a heavy-duty tow truck. this disabled truck might be a mail carrier truck. i'm not sure. we're watching that. hopefully it will get on its way well in time to get to their destination without any major delays. we're looking at a minor delay for highway 4. the construction crew cleared but that wasn't early enough. no recovery. the slowing is just there now. a little build just kicking off right here out of vallejo for west 37.

good morning to you on this wednesday. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. let's get a look at the forecast and see what's in store, checking in with kari. >> it's going to be a warmer day across many of the inland valleys and we're also going to have a lot more sunshine. the spike in temperatures hits us just briefly for a couple of days and then we go back to our usual weather. so we're starting out this morning, temperatures in the upper 60s for the south bay. it's in the upper 50s for the north bay, so a little bit of a fresher start to the morning. we're going to see those temperatures for the first day of school at brisbane school district at about 61 at drop-off time and upper 70s at pick-up time. warmer than it has been, los gatos with a high of 94 and martinez reaching 95, hayward, as well as mountain view reaching 87, and 90 today in santa rosa. we'll talk about what's ahead in the rest of the forecast in a

few minutes. >> thank you. developing at this hour, the search is on for a suspected arsonist who vandalized a popular south bay sushi restaurant. >> the name of that restaurant is literally confidential, but that's not necessarily the case for the suspect. "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is live in san jose this morning, in san pedro square. you have some clues the suspect left behind, right, kris? >> reporter: yeah, so the suspect left a wake of destruction here at sushi confidential, but also left a few items behind that might point to who this person is. you can see this person in the surveillance video that was offered to us by the owner of the restaurant. he is in the patio, then vandalizing sushi confidential here at san jose san pedro square. the owner of the restaurant says the suspect slips behind the stage and moments later re-emerges as flames take over. the suspect broke three glass doors, creating such a ruckus

that a security guard across the street called 911 before the flames overtook the restaurant. the suspect took off with only a lighter and a fire extinguisher, but leaving behind a fanny pack and a big clue. >> we found his hat over here and it was laying there, so they took his hat for evidence because they might be able to get dna from it. >> reporter: when owner randy muster posted about the arson, people commented about seeing the suspect earlier in the night, some saying he had been kicked out of other bars and had been in contact with police earlier in the night. neither san jose police nor san jose fire are confirming that at this point. the owner says sushi confidential is not the only restaurant that's been vandalized or burglarized in the downtown area, so he says he and other business owners have been meeting with san jose mayor matt

mahan to ask him to be more proactive about the break-ins, about crime and about serving the people who are living on the streets. he says he's been satisfied with the response up to this point, but then, again, his restaurant just got broken into the other night. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> all right, kris, thank you. 5:32 right now. new this morning, the promise of a new san francisco tour that will probably never include your standard double-decker bus. it's called the doom loop tour, and it is getting national attention for really all the wrong reasons. >> the creators are hoping to spotlight what they call the worst parts of the city. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is in the newsroom this morning. we're guessing there's a larger message to play out here as well. >> reporter: that really is the guess, marcus and laura. up until now there is a cloud of mystery on this tour that's getting a lot of attention. it says that for $30 it will show visitors the shadow parts of san francisco. now, that tour is scheduled to

happen this saturday, august 26th, but some have been questioning its legitimacy. that's because, as mentioned, there is very little information on the organizer of the event, who calls themselves sf anonymous. i've reached out to see if they can verify the event or share details, but have not heard back. one man, who has lived and advocated for the tenderloin community for years, says he is specifically conducting a tender loin walking tour to answer back. >> me showing up that day across the street from this tour with my group of folks, we won't engage, we'll just have a pleasant, typical tour where we'll have fun and we'll celebrate this community. we don't like some of the conditions in the tenderloin. we want the tenderloin to be better ourselves. >> reporter: it's not anything new. the tenderloin walking tours have been around for almost two decades, touring buildings and

sharing the history, the tenderloin museum, st. anthony's kitchen. seymour is an advocate for the unhoused, and he says he wants to send a different message to the doom loop tourgoers. the tenderloin community, he says, is not what you think. >> if i've got a doughnut, i'll break it in half. we're a break it in half community. no one else does the things that we do. >> reporter: if you actually go on event bright, it says the tour was $30 before it got sold out. the tenderloin tour, del says, is free and he'll throw in a free lunch from a place in the tenderloin. we'll see how this plays out. ginger conejero saab, "today in the bay." >> ginger, thank you. 5:35 this morning. new calls for greater pedestrian safety in san francisco. this is after the death of a 4-year-old girl struck by a car near oracle park. last night activists held a

rally near the scene at 4th and king streets, and that's where last week police say a car plowed through that crosswalk straight into a stroller being pushed by the girl's father. the 71-year-old suspected driver is now facing charges. supervisor matt dorsey says part of the solution involves a proposed state measure allowing san francisco to small speed detection cameras. >> so that if you speed on a surface street in a residential neighborhood in my city, you're getting a ticket. this isn't taking a risk of getting one. >> just like you, my heart is breaking, and i'm angry. i'm really, really angry. >> mayor london breed has already announced changes in response to the tragedy, that includes removing the outer right turn from 4th onto king, and changing the right turn traffic signal from a green light to a yellow arrow. happening tonight, concerned

parents plan to address san francisco's school board members over the district's reported massive budget deficit. the chronicle reports there are big concerns the superintendent is considering closing up to 30 public schools, a decision could come down later this month. right now, there are no concrete plans, but district leaders do say $6 billion worth of improvements are needed for campuses citywide, and 15% of its teacher vacancies have not been filled. also, it's anticipating a $36 million shortfall this school year. tonight's meeting takes place at 6:00 p.m. new this morning, a new north bay housing plan is reportedly one step closer to reality. this is to help more people make it in the bay. the chronicle reports that state housing leaders have certified plans to develop what would be marin's largest affordable housing development in 50 years. the oak hill project would be built on a former gun range, steps from san quentin state prison, but it promises more than 130 housing units for

teachers and another 115 homes for low-income families. developers are still searching for financing, but there's hope for a 2025 groundbreaking. 5:37 on your wednesday morning. it looks like folks are up and about as we take a live look from the east bay. good morning, walnut creek. let's say good morning to meteorologist kari hall. >> it looks great today, but warm. and if you've been wanting some weather where you want to go swimming or some of those water activities, you're going to get that for this afternoon. also, more sunshine in san francisco, but unfortunately, because of some fires burning up around oregon, we're going to see some hazy skies and some drifts of smoke. moderate air quality for us for today. as we take a look at santa rosa, a nice, cool start, temperatures in the upper 50s and a clear sky. as we go into the rest of the day it does stay sunny as we reach into the upper 70s by 8:00. we'll get a look at our

microclimates coming up. mike, you've got a few spots with slowing. >> most of them are the usual suspects. highway 4, we saw the early construction or the late construction, maybe, they picked up by 5:00, but there's been slowing ever since. highway 37 just shows up on the grid and also some slowing toward the carquinez bridge. bay bridge, no metering lights yet, but should be any second because of the volume building. we see slowing on the incline. this is what we're watching, the slowing north 880 around the approach to the broadway exit. we have a disabled vehicle. the tow truck should be arriving any second and that will result in a little more slowing. traffic is still able to get by with minor delays. over here, a minor delay for the midday game, but, remember, the postgame traffic will blend in with the post work traffic, so there may be more congestion past the coliseum. over here, chase center, cirque du soleil, they're now in san francisco, and this will be through the weekend.

cupertino reaching 93 degrees, and 92 in east san jose. for much of the east bay, it is mid to upper 90s. walnut creek hitting 96 degrees, while in hayward we're going to reach a high of 87. now, the seven-day forecast is already up at the bottom of the screen. these temperatures ramp up and go back to normal starting over the next few days. so it does look like we'll just see this for a little while. half moon bay reaching 75 degrees, sunny and warmer there, as well as some warmer temperatures in san francisco. the mission district and downtown, the highs in the upper 70s. napa reaching 88 degrees, while clear lake will reach a high of 92. we're seeing the influence of the lowe off the coast moving closer, which will bring back our ocean breeze. it's kind of fighting between that and the high pressure over the southwest. so we may see a little bit of a spike in temperatures, but then it comes back with some cooler air and the start of the

mornings with clouds as we go into the next few days, which keeps our temperatures from heating up quickly. gilroy goes from mid-90s to low 80s tomorrow, and we'll see a slight ramp up in temperatures into the weekend. overall, very seasonable weather for the inland areas and we're keeping our microclimates in full effect, meaning our coastal temperatures will be cooler and there will be at least a spread of about 20 degrees across the bay area heading into the weekend. mike, you're starting to see some slowing out there? >> it's wednesday, so we've been seeing the peak of the commutes on wednesdays and traffic is coming back, we're seeing it more pronounced in san jose with slowing. that will clear up again and then build up again over the next hour. we're tracking that. no other real issues for the south bay. in the east bay, we talked about this, eastbound 580, castro valley, reports of a motorcycle down. no record on injuries, but there are people to help right now. chp will give us a few more

we love babies around here. american dairy association northeast unveiled this year's butter sculpture ahead of the great new york state fair. have you seen these before? they're pretty big. it's intense to put them together. the theme of the sculpture is dairy every day is a healthy way, keeping kids' health on track. it features a train circling a station with children eating dairy products coming out of the cars. artists used more than 800 pounds of butter to complete the sculpture. move over, new york, illinois state fair have a butter sculpture on display, an 800-pound butter cow, giving everyone a glimpse of life as a dairy farmer. the tradition dates back to the 1920s. >> it's warm there. >> they have one in the central valley, but you've got to make sure it stays chilled. >> can't take
