american dairy association northeast unveiled this year's butter sculpture ahead of the great new york state fair. have you seen these before? they're pretty big. it's intense to put them together. the theme of the sculpture is dairy every day is a healthy way, keeping kids' health on track. it features a train circling a station with children eating dairy products coming out of the cars. artists used more than 800 pounds of butter to complete the sculpture. move over, new york, illinois state fair have a butter sculpture on display, an 800-pound butter cow, giving everyone a glimpse of life as a dairy farmer. the tradition dates back to the 1920s. >> it's warm there. >> they have one in the central valley, but you've got to make sure it stays chilled. >> can't take it outside.

a very good wednesday morning to you. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. of course today is wednesday, and we're coming off of a muggy week. today is going to be warmer than yesterday, right? >> warmer, but not as humid. we're going to trade one for the other. you know, it's going to be fairly warm for the inland valleys, and our spike in temperatures comes later on this afternoon. as far as what we're feeling right now, temperatures are in the upper 60s in the south bay and in the north bay it's in the upper 50s in rohnert park as you get ready to head out the door. we're going to see temperatures ramping up quickly with sunshine throughout the day. we're going from upper 50s to low 70s at 10:00, and then 82 degrees at 1:00 today. a look at the highs, it will head for the upper 90s in fairfield today. be ready for that. we'll talk about cooler temperatures in our verk. that's coming up in just a few minutes. back to you. >> thank you very much.

we're moving you forward on a new crime fighting push at a popular east bay destination. walnut creek merchants are fed up with robberies. bob redell joins us live outside of the police department there. what are police trying to do about this, bob? >> reporter: well, they did say with regards to the recent uptick this past july of robberies in the downtown area, there was one person responsible for a number of those, so walnut creek police have been doing their job. they made that arrest. last night during a community town hall meeting they did hear from frustrated business owners, like this coffee store broken into on august 7th. you can see the burglar who stole hundreds of dollars from her business. police say there was, as i mentioned, an uptick in robberies that took place after hours at several downtown businesses here in downtown

walnut creek. this was in july. they were connected to one suspect, who was arrested on august 11th. but prior to the july uptick, police say that property crime was down 24% for the first half of this year compared to the same time period last year, in 2022. mccullough, however, believes that police are downplaying the issue of crime here in the downtown. >> they're telling us it's not as bad as we think it is. tell that to my staff and i that got robbed and all of the other business owners that were robbed. >> we have enough police on hand to prevent, deter, and catch people should they come to walnut creek and look to do something criminal. >> reporter: that was walnut creek council member kevin wilk, who says addressing property crimes is a top priority. last night police did say that some businesses do need to do a better job of prioritizing their own security by installing alarms, and not only installing them, but actually using them.

trump to surrender here at the fulton county jail on thursday. now, several of former president trump's co-defendants have turned themselves in here. meanwhile, the republican rivals, they're trying to have a breakthrough performance on the debate stage tonight. eight republican presidential hopefuls face off tonight for the first gop debate in milwaukee, wisconsin. >> i think what people can expect to see is a real vision for the country. >> the event gives candidates an opportunity to separate themselves from this crowded field. >> i'm the only outsider in this race. everybody else is a professional politician. i think that's one of the choices we face in this race. do you want a super pac puppet or a patriot who speaks the truth? >> reporter: former president trump is skipping the debate as his legal problems loom large over the race. the current gop front-runner has been indicted four times and plans to turn himself in to

authorities in atlanta thursday. trump and 18 co-defendants face charges related to alleged efforts to overturn georgia's 2020 election results. a few of his co-defendants, including former trump lawyer john eastman, already surrendered. >> i am confident that when the law is faithfully applied in this proceeding, all of my co-defendants and i will be fully vindicated. >> reporter: trump's absence from the debate stage gives other candidates a chance to seize the spotlight. a republican national committee official tells me issues affecting voters will be front and center. >> when you can't afford gas and food, your attention is on you're going to get food on your table. your attention is how are you going to get to work. that's where the attention of the american people is. >> reporter: polls show despite facing four criminal cases, the former president remains the top choice for most republicans. tonight, other candidates will make the case that they should

unconstitutional surveillance during the pandemic. attorneys filed the lawsuit yesterday claiming the county embarked on an operation to track residents. geofencing uses cell phone data to track movements. the new lawsuit comes after the church was ordered to pay more than $1 million in fines to the county for illegally holding large-scale services during the covid lockdown. in a statement, santa clara county denies the allegations, saying it did not, quote, use cell phone surveillance to track anyone at calvary chapel during the pandemic. the health officer never issued any restrictions specific to churches or religious institutions whatsoever. despite the recent setback from san francisco robotaxi operator cruise, opponents still argue it's not enough. labor advocates in san francisco are organizing a new rally for later this morning outside of cruise headquarters. this comes after state regulators ordered cruise to cut its operating fleet in half in

as you approach the bay bridge. good morning. very happy wednesday to you. today is a big day in tech. today, after the bell, santa clara's nvidia reports profits. a lot of people have bet they're going to be big, and that's why i've talked about nvidia every day so far this week. nvidia makes super powerful chips that power ai, and three months ago, the last time nvidia reported, the numbers were so good the stock jumped 24% the following day. these chips are so good, the u.s. government is blocking china from buying them, and yet nvidia managed to sell a ton of them worldwide. ai, meanwhile, has the potential to create a new boom or bubble or both. this according to analysts at wells fargo. they've been looking at this and they're comparing it to the '90s and the dot-com boom. if generative ai lives up to the hype, we would expect the macroeconomic impact to be an acceleration in real gdp, real

incomes and overall employment, according to wells fargo. good news from the moon. india just landed an unmanned probe on the moon, making it the fourth country in history to land an object on the moon, and they did it on the hard setting. they landed near the moon's south pole, full of rocks and craters, but also likely has water, which is the whole point of the mission, find water. the russians tried the same spot earlier this week, they crashed. this week on our podcast sand hill road, i speak to long-time silicon valley leader agarwal and we took a test and passed. you know why? because it's the easiest test ever. some people still managed to fail. >> i was shocked, i mean, i came up with the right answer immediately. i was shocked that grown adults of both genders were just flummoxed by the question. >> exactly.

time outside. happy first day of school for san rafael city. it's in the 60s, all clear, we'll have sunshine throughout the day and warmer temperatures. pick-up time, it's going to be in the upper 80s. you'll have the ac blasting in the car going around the pickup line. we'll see temperatures in los gatos reaching 94 degrees, mid-90s for morgan hill and gilroy. for the interior east bay, upper 90s, antioch 99 degrees today. even warmer in oakland with a high of 84 degrees. we're going to see some mid-80s in redwood city, upper 80s for palo alto, and also mostly sunny in half moon bay and much of san francisco, with mid to upper 70s, while the north bayatur re to mid-90s today. what we've seen recently is the low pressure just kind of wobbling back and forth. when it's closer, we have the counterclockwise wind flow, more of an ocean breeze.

when it retreats to the north, temperatures heat up. let me show you concord, because we are going to see temperatures going from upper 90s to mid-80s by friday and then we're back into the 90s as we head into the beginning of next week. so not a huge change in temperatures, but it will definitely be cooler for the weekend compared to what we'll see today. san francisco, back to the upper 60s. mike, you're seeing a couple of hang-ups in the east bay. >> one would be the usual at the bay bridge toll plaza, the metering lights came on. we're holding steady here. typical slowing in most of the east bay, but still northbound 880 is slow. i believe they've cleared that vehicle now from 880. things should start to improve. west 24 has a crash reported on the shoulder, but that does add to a little slowing. nothing else unexpected. the south bay should show slowing in the next few. 6:22 right now. next on "today in the bay," nbc

time to get a look at what we can expect from the weather. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the beautiful start in san jose. >> it's starting out clear. we don't have the protection of the fog and marine layer to keep those temperatures from rising quickly today. so it will be hotter, especially going into the afternoon, but the good thing is that we won't have that high humidity we've had. that is out of here. as we take a look at our trend today, looking at san jose, at 8:00 it's 67 degrees, already a warm start, and it's in the low 80s at lunchtime. as we go toward dinner, it will be in the low 90s and we'll see upper 90s for our hottest spots in the inland east bay and south county. mike, you've been watching the east bay commute? >> better news for the nimitz, we do have a crash or a disabled truck that was finally cleared. very quick recovery. that indicates a lighter volume, as we saw on the live shot by the coliseum. the buildup is at the bay bridge

toll plaza and typical spots, through richmond, on the richmond bridge to san rafael, more slowing through hayward. there may be a crash in union city. i'll check on it. developing at this hour, the search is on for a suspected arsonist who vandalized a south bay sushi restaurant. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is live in san pedro square. we understand that the suspect left some clues behind. >> reporter: yeah, so they left a number of clues as to their identity behind, including surveillance video, and so the owner thinks that it might be easy to track this person down at some point. take a look at the suspect here in that surveillance video provided by the owner of sushi confidential. you see him on the patio, then

vandalizing the restaurant. the owner of the restaurant says the suspect slips behind the stage, and moments after, he re-emerges and flames take over. the suspect broke three doors in the process, glass doors, creating such a ruckus that a security guard across the street heard the commotion and called 911 before flames overtook the whole restaurant. the suspect did take off only with a lighter and a fire extinguisher, but left behind a fanny pack and one pretty big clue. >> we found his hat right over here and it was laying there, so they took his hat for evidence because they might be able to get dna from it. >> reporter: now, when the owner, randy muster, posted about the arson on social media, people commented about having seen the suspect earlier in the night. some people saying he had been kicked out of other bars and that they saw him making contact with police. neither san jose police nor the fire department are confirming

this at this point. now, the owner of sushi confidential says his business is not the only one that has been broken into and vandalized here on san pedro square and in the surrounding downtown area. he's working with other business owners, they are then working with mayor matt mahan to ask him to be more preventative about break-ins and addressing the folks living on the streets here in the city. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> they have some good video and it looks like evidence, too. hopefully they can crack down on this arsonist. thanks. new at 6:00, police are asking for your help this morning, trying to find someone who may be tied to a deadly hit-and-run. oakland police posted this photo on social media, this person wanted in connection for a crash last month near 45th and bancroft avenues. that's where investigators say the car ran a stop sign, struck another car, killing someone in that vehicle. they say that suspect ran from

the scene, but another passenger was detained. if you can identify that individual, you are asked to contact oakland police. a man accused in the brutal death of a peninsula woman is due back in court for a competency hearing. investigators say 33-year-old jose solano used a samurai sword to kill the mother of his daughter in san carlos. attorneys argue he is not competent to stand trial. today two doctors will present their mental health evaluations. new this morning, the promise of a new san francisco tour that will probably never include a standard double-decker bus. it's not a typical tour. this one is called the doom loop tour, and it is getting national attention for all the wrong reasons. >> the creators are hoping to spotlight what they call the worst parts of the city. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is in the newsroom this morning. we're guessing that there's also a larger message in play here.

>> reporter: that's right, marcus and laura. there is a cloud of mystery around this tour. it is getting a lot of attention. it's an event that says for $30 this tour will show visitors all the shadows of san francisco. the tour is scheduled to happen this saturday, august 26th, but some are questioning its legitimacy because there is very little information on the organizer of the event, who calls themself sf anonymous. i've reached out to event bright to see if they can verify the event but have not heard back. one man is reacting to this. he's lived and advocated for the tenderloin community for years and he says he is specifically conducting a tenderloin walking tour to answer back. >> by me showing up that day across the street from this tour with my group of folks, we won't engage, we'll just have a pleasant, typical tour where we'll have fun and we'll celebrate this community. we don't like some of the

conditions in the tenderloin, we want the tenderloin to be better ourselves. >> reporter: the tenderloin walking tours have been around for decades touring buildings and sharing the history behind places like live memorial, the museum, st. anthony's kitchen and the church in the neighborhood. seymour is a community leader and advocate for the unhoused and those fighting addiction and says he wants to send a different message. the tenderloin community, he says, is not what you think. >> if i've got a doughnut, i'll break it in half. we're a break it in half community. >> reporter: well, if you check the event, the doom loop tour says that it's sold out, it says that tickets were going for $30. del says the tenderloin walking tour is free and he'll throw in a free lunch from one of the places in the tenderloin.

he says it's one of the tours that is really tailor made, depending on the group. it's been around for a really long time. we'll have to sit and wait until saturday to see how this plays out. >> really interesting to see. you don't want other parts of the country to think that's all we are in the bay area. happening tonight, concerned parents are addressing school board members over the massive budget deficit. the chronicle reports there are big concerns the superintendent is considering closing up to 30 public schools. the decision could come down later this month. right now there are no concrete plans but leaders say $6 billion worth of improvements are needed for campuses citywide. 15% of its teacher vacancies have still not been filled. also, it's anticipating a $36 million shortfall this school year alone. tonight's meeting takes place at 6:00 p.m. taking a live look out this morning in dublin as we get

hampshire. former president trump says he'll surrender to the authorities at the fulton county jail tomorrow in atlanta. we expect rudy giuliani to surrender today. the accused in the georgia elections case have until friday to show up. the sheriff's deputies will take mugshots and fingers prints. former chief of staff mark meadows asked the prosecutor for more time to surrender. she said no, everyone is being treated equally. she pointed out she had given them two weeks to show up. meadows is trying to get his trial moved to federal court. a new minutes ago the names of kenneth chesebro, who thought up the legal theory, and trump lawyer ray smith, appeared on the fulton county jail's website listing of detained inmates. we're waiting for more

information. there's a development in the mar-a-lago documents case. this is a different set of charges, different prosecutor. one of the witnesses in the case who was represented by a trump-affiliated attorney changed his story after he got a different lawyer, a public defender. according to papers filed by the prosecution, that witness now says he lied to the grand jury. originally he said he was unaware of an attempt to erase surveillance video to hide the movement of documents. the prosecution now says he named trump and two others at mar-a-lago in the scheme to destroy evidence documented in the superseding indictment. a reminder, the gop debate this evening is at 6:00. l.a. leaders just approved new reports calling for a permanent replacement to temporary fencing on streets surrounding the hike to the iconic landmark. in one case, a new traffic roundabout. this is to address public safety issues, including deterring drivers from stopping along the highway. the best gymnasts in the country are showing their talents this week in san jose for the xfinity u.s. gymnastics national championships. the men got their first day of podium training. they need time to get used to apparatuses on the raised podiums. so the bay area is going to be well represented this week, 11 competitors on the men's side trained at stanford. >> it's awesome. i don't think i've ever competed in my hometown, never had a big championship in houston, so i think it's really exciting. i hope we get a big crowd from stanford. >> for my rotation specifically, it's all stanford guys.

drop-off time at 62 degrees. it's a cool start, but we'll be warm at pick-up time as we approach the mid-80s. the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen. let's take a look at our high temperatures and where we're headed. there will be a quick spike in temperatures for this afternoon for the inland valleys. then you see numbers coming down in time for the wen. in morgan hill expect a high of 96 degrees, while san jose will be in the upper 80s. much of the east bay will be in the lower 90s, up to about 84 today in oakland, and along the coastline it will be warmer with mid-70s, while palo alto will hit a high of 88 degrees. in san francisco, 77 in the mission district. in the north bay, reaching 88. santa rosa reaching 90 degrees. we've seen this area of low pressure remain persistent across the coast and just kind of moving up and down. once it moves farther to the

north, there's more of an influence of high pressure over the southwest, making those temperatures hotter. but when it's a little bit closer, our temperatures come down. so it's hot today, but as we get a stronger ocean breeze and the return of the coastal fog, gilroy will see temperatures dropping over the next few days. but not seeing any major spikes in temperatures, even as we extend it through next week. today the hottest day we'll see in quite a while, while san francisco is keeping it cool this weekend. mike, the wednesday build looks like it's happening. >> i'm showing you the direction of the build and where it is, the colors indicate through richmond and now through berkeley around university avenue, coming off of central there. more build toward the carquinez bridge and into novato we see slowing we expect for the north bay. walnut creek, southbound 680, off of 242 and down through concord, pleasant hill and toward walnut creek. we have a couple of incidents

near treasure island. another crash that's been blocking one lane for quite some time. >> thank you very much. happening now, san francisco attorneys are getting ready to ask the federal appeals court to overturn a recent injunction blocking the city from clearing homeless encampments. the injunction bars the city from enforcing specific laws against sitting and lodging on the sidewalk. homeless advocates sued last year arguing the city is violating federal precedent and takes unreasonable measures in disposing of people's property. ahead of the hearing, mayor breed plans to join merchants outside of the federal courthouse for a rally. homeless advocates are organizing an opposing protest at the same time. a quick look at the top stories, including a response to crime in one popular east bay destination spot. the new action police are taking to bring peace of mind to businesses and visitors in downtown walnut creek. first, here is what's happening on "today." >> coming up on "today," the
