weather. >> yeah, the temperatures are going to be tumbling down. ha ha. it's warm, it's 71 degrees in san josé. it was so hot yesterday, but it won't be as hot today. the numbers coming down as we approach the weekend. los gatos will see a high of 91, and we will mostly see upper 80s for much of the north. we will talk about what is ahead in the weekend coming up. a deadly overnight shooting at an oakland homeless encampment. it happened about three hours ago near i-580 and telegraph avenue. one person was killed and we are still waiting to hear on a motive or if anybody has been arrested. developing now in southern california, three people dead in

a shooting rampage at a popular orange county biker bar. the gunman is dead as well and he died at the hands of the responding deputies. six are in the hospital, five with gunshot wounds. here's what authorities are saying about the gunman. >> at this point the man believed to be involved in the shooting is deceased at the scene, and one weapon was recovered and the suspect may be retired law enforcement. we are working to confirm that information as we speak. >> sources say the man may have been targeting his wife. more news is expected to come out in a news conference later today. school closures will be on the agenda when school board members meet next tuesday, and

favorites and hometown favorites. as we are rooting for them, we know the whole world will be rooting for some of those olympians that will be here, and that includes simone biles and suni lee. they will be competing in the days ahead, and simone biles, of course, the greatest gymnast of all times has seven national titles and four olympic gold medals and after struggling at the tokyo games in 2021, she did step away from the sport in the last few years and only stepped back in. the reigning olympic all around gold olympic, suni lee, and she had a kidney issue and she will

moderate air quality along the coastline today as the smoke continues to drift from oregon and northern california. first day back to school in burlingame. 68 at drop off time and 78 at pick up, and nice and sunny throughout the day. it will be warm at a lot of spots especially the interior valleys down in morgan hill. 90 degrees. 91 in livermore. napa, 89. and then we bring it down a couple degrees, and we are looking at low 80s in novato and upper 80s for the south county tomorrow. it will still be warm on saturday, but we are basically seeing the temperatures holding steady. when we compare our temperatures versus what they are seeing elsewhere, there's a large heat dome across the midwest.

look at lincoln, nebraska, today, hitting 104 degrees, extreme temperatures and they have had it for a while so it's not letting up today. we have a lot going on this weekend with silicon valley pride happening. the weather is looking nice. throughout the weekend our highs reach into the low and mid-80s. next week it gets hot towards the middle of the week but overall we will take a break in the next several days, and it will feel like summer but we are headed for the upper 80s and low 90s. we will still keep the wide range in temperatures, san francisco in the 60s over the weekend. there was slowing and improvements approaching bailey, but it just shifted over to bailey itself. that's the early commute through

one bay area hospital re-introducing its covid masking policy. the surge of cases leading to that change. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you on this thursday. i am marcus washington. >> i am laura garcia. quickly approaching 5:30. let's start with a look at the forecast. meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking what we can expect. it has been a little warm. >> it has been very warm and slightly cooler, and as we get started outside in palo alto this morning. it's mostly clear and temperatures in the upper 60s, which we already know is a warm start to the day. it doesn't warm up as quickly as we go from the upper 60s to upper 70s, and then by 11:00 and noon, it's 80 degrees. los gatos will hit a high of 91, and we will see the same in livermore, and 90 in morgan

hill. we will talk about our weekend plans and things going on coming up in a few minutes. mike, you have a slow drive through richmond? >> yeah, and we found the reason. it's, indeed, potentially a crash. there's a report of a tire in the roadway and somebody stopped to, i think, address that. i am hoping it was the tire that was hit, at most, and i am hoping no people or pedestrians. we will watch from the updates on chp. we do see more slowing. i think there was a traffic break approaching westbound 80 at central and that will cause slowing through richmond, and then we are looking at a smooth drive through most of the bay area, but should see a build around contra costa coming up. >> thank you. three people are dead at a shooting rampage at a popular orange county biker bar, and the

gunman is dead as well and died at the hands of responding deputies. the chaos played out last night at cook's corner and that bar is east of irvine. the gunman may have been a retired police officer, and he may have been targeting his wife. more information is expected to come out in a news conference later today. city leaders are trying to overturn an order preventing the city from clearing encampments. >> bob, both sides are passionut in their beliefs. >> the coalition on homelessness is suing the city over this issue arguing the city doesn't have a right to remove those

people or their belongings without providing adequate shelter or housing. this was the scene yesterday outside the ninth circuit court of appeals, and london breed and city supervisors say it's not a good idea to let anybody sleep on the streets without any recourse, and they point out that the unhoused refuse to use the beds available to them. there are currently 281 open shelter beds and 658 vacancies in permanent supportive housing. >> there has to be accountability. >> what if people refuse to go to them? >> then we need to figure out why are people refusing to go into them? how can we create an environment

in them where people will trust and feel safe in them. >> and the coalition blamed san francisco for not attacking the affordability crisis, and the three-judge panel had sharp questions for both sides of the attorneys, and that injunction prevents the city from removing any encampment that are involuntary homeless, and the judges zeroed in on the phrase, involuntarily homelessness to get clarity on what rules could be enforced. both sides return to the federal district court later this morning for the hearing on the original lawsuit that led to that injunction. reporting live in san francisco, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> a lot to think about there. thank you.

the spike in summer covid cases is raising concerns among some bay area health officials. kaiser is re-introducing its masking requirements. kaiser says in part in all of our northern california facilities, and even in areas where not required, mask remain a recommended tool to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses. happening today napa is marking nine years since the earthquake that killed one person and injured more than 200 others. the 6.0 quake caused major damage to more than 150 buildings leading to a lot of tear downs. it was center outside american canyon and felt as far away as nevada in parts of southern

california as well. economic lost estimates at $400 million. former president trump is expected to turn himself in later. >> this is not the first time we have spoke about him turning himself in. >> first, we believe trump will have to surrender at the rather infamous fulton county jail, where he will be fingerprinted and a mugshot taken. these are live pictures from the fulton county jail. a presidential mugshot would be a first, and the sheriff said they treat everybody equally no matter their status. 18 other codefendants include rudy giuliani, and he turned himself in yesterday.

running for president? >> with trump missing from the debate, we were watching to see who would stand out. obviously this was ron desantis's time to shine and many pundits and spin doctors said he didn't, and instead it was the newcomer, vivek ramaswamy. the moderators of the debate avoided asking about trump for quite a long time and then there was this scene when the candidates were asked to raise their hands if they would support the eventual gop nominee, even if that were trump. >> you all signed a pledge to support the nominee, and if trump was convicted in a court

this weekend, you can join laura and marcus in berkeley. it will be in the mid-60s to start at 10:00, and then we go throughout the day with sunshine and highs only in the low 70s, so nice and comfortable with a light breeze. in monterey, expect it to reach in the upper 60s throughout the weekend. we start out with fog and see it clear out a little for the afternoon. our morning temperatures there start out in the upper 50s. going for a hike this weekend, 68 degrees for a high on friday and then low 70s for saturday and sunday, and morning temperatures in the mid-50s. if your weekend plans take you to south lake tahoe, it will be nice, and maybe a nice way to wrap up summer with the 70s and low 80s. speed sensors might be moving better, and i do think there was a traffic break but we have had no substantial update

for 80, and folks coming off the bridge from san rafael are fine. highway 4, another slowdown is stretching into concord. 242 shows slowing as well. and we will check the timing through concord and walnut creek coming up. i know there's more traffic coming into san francisco right now, and the metering lights should be activating and we will watch for that in a few minutes. and this continues to be the home for cirque du soleil, and a show is tonight at 7:30. if you have a weekend show, that could be one to worry about. cal train as well as bart, they have sections of the track that will be closed for maintenance, and if you are staying into the city from either side of the bay, plan a different route. we will keep moving forward despite the closure. they do have a bus bridge.

here's the look at our commute from antioch this morning. it's going to be in the low 70s to start. kind of a warm morning, and also breezy with a clear sky. as we head throughout the day we will be in the upper 70s by lunchtime or upper 80s, i should say, and heating up into the 90s this afternoon. but we're headed for lower temperatures for the weekend. more on that coming up in a few minutes. kari, and one of the early starts here, we are looking at your drive through pittsburgh to walnut creek growing to over half an hour if you take the 680 to highway 4 route. 680 is still move from the benicia bridge. metering lights should be on.

yesterday so it will feel a little better but warm during the middle of the day. headed for 93 in concord and 90 in danville. oakland today reaching 80 degrees. along the coastline, the temperatures are coming down to the upper 60s for half moon bay, and upper 60s in palo alto. san francisco, low 70s this afternoon with the marina district in the mid-60s there. and in the north bay, 78 in mill valley to mid and upper 90s further to the north. when you compare what we are feeling versus much of the rest of the country, you have a massive heat dome causing record-high temperatures and heat to expand. look at chicago. the high temperature there is 101 degrees. and look at some of our hotter spots, like brentwood and the
