the lady was freaking out, there's a shooting, don't go over there. seconds later i hear the shots and see the shooter. >> a shooting rampage kills three people, and the gunman also killed,ing and who police think was the original target. then raising the red flag over feared school closures. this is "today in the bay". this is thursday morning, friday eve for a lot of folks out there. i want to say good morning to you. i am marcus washington. >> i am laura garcia. we will get to the headlines for you in a moment but excitement is building in the south bay this morning, the world's best gymnast getting together to compete in the xfinity u.s. gymnastics championships.

we will get a look at today's competition. >> stick that landing -- well, stick that forecast. it's warmer. yeah, it has been so warm these last couple of days, and it's the first day of school for a lot of kids. this is a lack at burlingame where temperatures starting out in the upper 60s and low 70s with a mostly sunny sky. it will be hot, low 90s for can concord. we will see low 70s in san mateo. tomorrow we will see some of the numbers coming down slightly, especially for the coastline. we will talk about the weekend coming up. mike, you are tracking a crash. what is going on? >> i go by the speed sensors and the other sources we have, but the chp blotter, a little tough to access so could be networking issues. but there's slowing around the

scene at central, and that will release more traffic towards the bay bridge, and we will track that build. so far nothing really unexpected. back to you. >> thank you, mike. we start with breaking news this morning. a deadly overnight shooting at an oakland homeless encampment. it happened about three hours ago around telegraph avenue. one person was killed, and we reached out to police for more information, and we are still waiting on word of a motive or arrests. and then a shooting rampage at a orange county biker bar. lauren coronado from our sister station in los angeles has the details. >> reporter: we are down the street from that bar. you can see law enforcement blocking the road for the investigation, and witnesses described the night as chaotic,

just awful. they say people were running and hiding and ducking as the shots rang out in the bar. according to the orange county sheriff's department the shooting happened around 7:00 last night here at cook's corner, a biker bar. the gunman walked in and started shooting randomly. three were killed and six others were injured, five of who were shot. of the injured, two are in the hospital in critical condition, and four others are considered stable. the shooter, who we are told, was former law enforcement, was shot and killed by responding deputies. as for the investigation, deputies say one weapon was recovered from the bar last night, and at least 30 to 40 witnesses were expected to be interviewed overnight. a devastating night, and a lengthy investigation under way. we expect to learn much more about those who were killed and those injured as well.

many parents are fearing the future of the schools. the district is facing a massive budget deficit along with staffing shortages as well as lower enrollment. concerned parents are speaking out in a push to keep all the schools open. >> there needs to be hard decisions made on the budget, but that doesn't mean we lose our precious assets, which are are neighborhood schools. >> the decisions on closures are expected to be made next week, and there's going to be an advisory board first before any of the closures are decided. and then the top gymnast are ascending on san josé for the gymnastics championship and that continues through sunday.

>> this event will likely be a great first look at what shakes out for next year's summer olympics in paris. and kris sanchez is inside the sap center, and i don't know if she's stretching out for that apparatus. a lot of fan favorites, right? >> reporter: they don't have a category for what i do, just summersaults. it's too much. the whole stanford's men team will be competing here, and we have six athletes that are bay area born and raised, and we will root for the olympics making their way back, including the g.o.a.t., simone biles. she and the rest of the senior men and women got to practice in the space where they will be competing. and simone biles has four

olympic gold medals, and she stepped away from the sport after struggling at the toyota games in 2021, and she is the favorite. and also lee will be here coming back from a kidney injury. it will be very exciting because this is the first time two olympic all-around gold medalist will compete against each other at the championships. >> yeah, it has been incredible to have simone back. so excited to have her back and other athletes returning to the elite competition. simone is an all-time great athlete, and having her back definitely brings more attention to the sport of gymnastics, and i am sure san josé cannot be

more excited to have her here as well, and you will see great gymnastics out of her, too. >> reporter: the women take the floor tomorrow, but today it's about the junior men. they take on their competition at 11:30 this morning. the senior men begin day one of their competition at 5:00 this evening. the junior men are getting guidance from somebody that not only knows the sport of gymnastics but knows what it is like to compete on a stage like this and on the olympic stage as well. we will introduce you to a member of the 2008 men's olympic team, and he will talk about how the program has changed and evolved. this is going to be a very exciting time. we will talk with him coming up at 6:45. in san josé, kris sanchez, today in the bay. >> that should be exciting. >> definitely. the performance that these kids give, it's amazing what they can do. >> i remember as a kid --

monday, tuesday or wednesday, you may have missed me giving a heads up on nvidia and why this is so important. nvidia makes chips used to run intensive calculations like computer graphics or self driving cars. artificial intelligence researchers discovered the powerful chips work really well for a.i., and last night nvidia, once again, showed investors how a.i. was for business. that stock is up 15% since monday morning, and set to rise another 3% at the opening bell. it's more than just money. a lot of analyst also see nvidia's results as verification the artificial intelligence industry is growing and is here to stay, and it has the same potential as the birth of the internet. are they right? we will see. the job estimates of job

creation was cut downwards. it was not because somebody messed up the count or forgot to carry the one. job numbers are constantly reestimated every month and then an annual benchmark review and that's where we lost the 306,000. but let's put this into context, there are more americans at work than any other time in history. at the time the economists were estimating the jobs, and so 300,000 jobs sounds like a big math error, but they are also estimating and adjusting, and when you compare that to the huge numbers we are dealing with, not a bad guess. apple now backing a right to repair bill making its way through the legislature, and if

approved it would cover electronics and appliances. apple would offer the ability to repair, and you can rent tools to repair your apple products at home. trending this morning, a new take on what has become the all-too familiar substitutes for plastic straws. >> forget about the paper straws or plastic straws or cups built with straws. how about a hot dog straw? you will love it or hate it. it's made out of silicone, and this is to mimic the feel of a hot dog. a fan was caught using a plastic straw, poking a hole through the

quality, and we are still getting drifts of smoke coming down the coastline and it's mostly unhealthy around the coast, and the rest of the bay area will see things improving. pleasant hill this morning, it's in the upper 60s. upper 70s at 9:00, so it's still going to heat up today as we get a lot more sun, but it won't be as hot as yesterday. some of these temperatures coming down five to seven degrees, and los gatos reaching 91. 91 in east san josé. for the east bay, reaching into the 90s. was see at the bottom of the screen in the 7-day forecast, it's going to be in the upper 60s for the coast and we are going to see that continue for today. in redwood city, reaching 83 and some low 70s downtown san francisco and in the mission district. for the north bay it will be

hotter up around ukiah reaching 97. sonoma catches a bit of a break from the 90s and will reach into the upper 80s this afternoon. when we compare our weather versus what a huge chunk of the country is dealing with right now, this large heat dome causing widespread records. look at chicago today reaching 101 degrees. it has been a very hot summer for much of texas. we are, once again, going to see our temperatures going up just slightly for a little while. it will come down in time for the weekend, and it will be a nice one in san josé. a lot of events going on, including nice weather. our temperatures for some of the hotter spots, in the inland areas will go from the upper 80s to mid-90s and will get hot again for the middle of next week, while staying nice and mild in san francisco. mike is trying to get you to where you are going. >> yeah, stick by for a couple seconds even though it could take you longer to get to the bay bridge.

nbc bay area responds to yet another gift card concern. >> yeah, this one involves an east bay woman. >> here we go again. this time it's laurie in castro valley. she says she went to a drugstore and bought a $40 amazon gift card and plugged that card into her app immediately, then the app flagged that card as invalid. she says amazon told her to return the card to the store. the store refused and told laurie to call amazon. rinse, repeat.

them from clearing homeless encampments. the city wants to clear the streets of tents and homeless out there. >> reporter: yeah, but an injunction made it impossible to clear out the homeless camps, and the homeless coalition is suing the city saying they cannot remove the people or belongings without providing adequate shelter. this was the scene yesterday where protesters on both sides of the issue argued their points, and london breed and a few city supervisors said it was not a good idea to let people sleep in the streets without recourse, and the unhoused refuse to use the beds offered to them. there's currently 281 open

meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking the weekend forecast for us, and it should be a nice day. i know there's a pride parade? >> yeah, it should be cooler for all the events, including the silicon valley pride event. they will have festivities going on throughout the weekend and the parade on sunday at 10:00 in the morning. it will be a nice 72 degrees and sunshine. it will be warm but comfortably warm as our high temperatures head for the low 80s. we have clear the shelters this week. bark in the park. you can join marcus and laura at berkeley humane. we will see the temperatures headed there for the low 70s. monterey, along the coastline, we will be in the upper 60s starting out each day with fog and then increasing sunshine while muir woods will also have nice weather. hiking this weekend looks nice.

mike, you have traffic starting to get to the bay area? >> yeah, not able to get to the bay bridge for many minutes. we hear there's police activity over at the berkeley curve. there's a little advantage as they make their way to the incline. this backup down the east shore freeway, all the feeder routes are slow but are starting to improve quickly getting towards the bay bridge toll plaza. stay to the freeways instead of surface streets. perhaps the richmond bridge will show more traffic. san mateo may see more traffic and we see slowing there as well. anywhere outside of those areas affected seems standard. back to you. >> thank you. a new health warning after numerous people that raced in a north bay all terrain obstacle

up at the bay bridge toll plaza. we will tell you what else you can expect for your morning commute, coming up. a new health advisory just issued for participants in a mudder race. within a day of the event some had rashes and fevers. several people on social media are now sharing their stories about getting sick and the health department says anybody that competed should seek medical attention if you have a rash, fever or other symptoms. we spoke with one man that developed those symptoms. >> body ache, runny nose, a mild fever around midday. that's when i knew, like, i probably should go to the doctor. >> tough mudder organizers are now looking into the matter. some participants are citing a reddit claim where people complained of similar symptoms following last year's race at
