ever colonize mars, researchers are finding there's a new personality traits defining the perfect candidates to head to space. scientists at george mason university set up a model to simulate colonizing mars. certain personalities are more desirable than others to work together to create the colony. those who may best survive are not very competitive, they tend to be more agreeable and the ideal candidates are willing to change routine and adapt. they would also probably be neither very introverted or extroverted and they would have to work well in a team. i say we could do that. the study is waiting to be peer reviewed, but it sounds like there's a few years until blastoff. >> have you ever seen "wayward pines" when the people got curious about the outside world? that's when they would all die.

thanks so much for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. time to get a look at that friday forecast. meteorologist kari hall has good news. >> it's going to be cooler today and it's going to be a great weekend across the bay area. let's get you ready for that commute this morning in san mateo, as you get ready to head out the door. it is all clear and we are going to see, hopefully, a good commute as you're heading to work on this friday morning. as far as temperatures, we are going to continue to see some milder weather for much of the bay area, including parts of the peninsula. i'll have a look at this and what's ahead in the rest of the forecast coming up. mike has a look at the bay bridge backup. >> kari, we were looking at a bigger build sooner in our commute. the metering lights were turned on earlier and then things calmed down. i think the eastshore freeway, the traffic management folks were watching the volume and might have said things calmed down from the first burst and they may have sped up the metering lights.

more about the case and updates on co-defendants. 6:05 right now. we are still awaiting a response from the driverless car company cruise this morning. this is following a crash involving one of its cars last night in san francisco. it happened around 9:30 on gough street near geary. from the video, you can see the car was hit from behind. witnesses say that it was struck by a construction backhoe. witnesses say the car was attempting to turn left onto starr king way, this is from the middle lane of the one-way street. the cruise car was empty at the time and the backhoe driver was not injured. state regulators recently ordered cruise to cut its operating fleet in half in the wake of recent crashes and traffic backups. and later today, the women will take over at the xfinity u.s. gymnastics championship in san jose. that's where america's top gymnasts are competing through

sunday. >> it follows preliminary events in men's gymnastics. "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is live this morning at s.a.p. center with a closer look at two young gymnasts competing on the national stage and in front of this hometown crowd. >> reporter: yeah, we have a number of bay area athletes, we have tyler on the men's side, he is not only from newark, so born and raised here, but he competes for cal. there are a slew of athletes from stanford, nearly the entire men's team is here competing, and they are dominating. we had cameras rolling yesterday as they began competition. leading the pack, asher hong in fourth place, khoi young is in fourth place, asher long is in the lead, actually. that is khoi young on the pommel horse rounding out the top six, colton walker. they still have one more day of competition but things are looking pretty good for the stanford man.

the top athletes will represent the u.s. at world. today the junior and senior women take the floor, including the greatest gymnast of all time, simone biles, and also suni lee and jordan chiles. there are six athletes from the bay area born and raised. we caught up with two of them at san mateo gymnastics where they train. in the junior competition, ally of san mateo, and in the senior division, from belmont. the national competition brings a lot of pressure, but they are both trying to work it in their favor. >> it's very exciting and cool to be competing against these amazing athletes and olympians. >> i think it's going to be exciting and it will be kind of a motivational boost to try and see if i can be the best. >> reporter: ally and the junior

found at nbcbayarea.com. now let's head over to meteorologist kari hall. she's got a look at our forecast. nice weekend ahead. >> it's going to be a great weekend and temperatures are coming down. we're starting out with clouds, which we know our marine layer keeps our temperatures from warming up too quickly. that will be clearing out fairly early for dublin. so we're right now at 63 degrees. we'll be in the upper 60s at 10:00, sunshine the rest of the day, then we'll see temperatures only reaching into the low 80s there. reaching 80 for a high today in san jose and fremont, and 80 as well in napa. san francisco stays in the 60s this afternoon. mike, you were hearing about a hazard in san jose. >> that's actually the best detail i have is hazard of some sort. traditionally that means a disabled vehicle. they're talking about northbound 280 at the 17 interchange, which is exactly where our camera is looking. we don't see any major problems, flashing lights or slow lights. that's good news. we'll continue to follow this portion of the map.

good energy because you've got the weekend ahead of you. walnut creek, a smooth drive we'll talk about the bigger look at contra costa county coming up. good morning. happy friday to you. markets were lower on thursday. the dow was pulled down in part by disney. now, this is the problem with using the dow as an index. there are only 30 stocks out there. shares in nvidia hit all-time highs on thursday, we've been talking about this stock since monday. i promise i will not talk about that stock tomorrow. donald trump did a lot of things yesterday, one of them he posted to the social network now known as x for the first time since he was kicked off following the attack on the capitol. when elon musk took over twitter, he decided to let trump back on, but trump never posted, choosing instead to post on truth social.

his reach is much bigger on x, where he has 86 million followers, compared to 6 million on truth social. the blog the information is reporting amazon is in talks with espn to create a streaming version of the sports network. it would cost between $25 and $35 a month, making it the most expensive streaming service in the united states. fed chair jay powell will speak at 7:00 a.m. our time at a fed symposium at jackson hole. they call it the super bowl of bankers. powell speaks often, but this is where he tends to make big news with big announcements. all of the fed's actions to flight inflation have driven up mortgage rates, now to their highest points in decades, 7.23%. that, in turn, is pushing home sales down. they're down 17% year-over-year, this according to the national

association of real estate agents and realtors. it is very hard to find a home for sale out there, because people, as we were talking about earlier, do not want to sell because they've got 2% or 3% mortgages. >> you don't want to give up those rates. >> we know a lot of people looking for homes, they turn to zillow. new this morning, zillow is offering mortgages with a down payment of just 1%. this is a push to lure more home buyers back into the market. the company is also willing to pay 2% of the down payment at closing. the move comes as mortgage rates hit a 22-year high this week. if you're among those looking to buy a home in the bay area, the new incentives won't help. zillow is rolling out that new program only for people in arizona, with the idea of expanding later to other states. >> hey, this is happening. not here. there's something great happening here. >> all month long, we've been talking about clearing the

be in the upper 80s in pleasanton, while antioch will reach a high of 89 degrees and mid-70s in oakland. moving toward the coastline, there will be a mostly cloudy day and daly city reaching 82, palo alto will reach 80 this afternoon. for san francisco, eventually we'll work our way toward some sunshine, especially downtown and in the mission district. we'll reach into the upper 60s. for the north bay, headed for 82 in santa rosa and 73 in mill valley. and then we compare that to the high temperatures we've seen elsewhere with this heat dome that's been breaking records and causing extreme heat, temperatures in the upper 90s, and over 100 degrees, all the way from the upper midwest down to texas. we are going to see that continue. as we take a look at some great news that we have going on here, just last week there was still a slight area in southern california included in a moderate drought, but due to the heavy rain from tropical storm

hilary, we've seen that taken out of the drought, so much more of california is no longer in a drought or even abnormally dry. we're going to see those temperatures heating up as we go toward next week. enjoy the weekend, with our warmest spots inland in the upper 80s and san francisco will be in the comfortable low 70s. mike, you said we would take a look at contra costa county. >> that's right. we're looking toward this drive, 31 minutes register from pittsburg along highway 4 down 680 into walnut creek. i showed you the live camera a few minutes ago. kirker pass road, still only about 20 minutes. that's not bad as well, very light drive for this friday. the speed sensors show the same thing, just a little bit of slowing through concord. highway 37, standard. the bay bridge metering lights are on, but no drama through the rest of the bay. we'll keep looking ahead and talk about what's going on tonight and over the weekend. back to you. 6:21, and coming up next, nbc bay area responds.

protecting a gift card starts at the rack in the store, because that's where many criminals start. before you buy a card, look for tampering. some scammers mess with the bar code. >> you can feel the sticker has a little bit of a ridge on it. >> former police officer spotted a tampered card and made a viral video on tiktok. the bar code sticker is for a different gift card that the thief has. so any money you load onto that card would actually land on the thief's card. so look for a sticker. >> take that extra 20 seconds and visually inspect it. >> you can choose a gift card with extra security. some of them let you set up a pin, especially those use anywhere kind. that might make it tougher for the bad guys to drain your balance. after you get a gift card, use it asap, because other criminals are simply hacking to try to drain your balance. >> there are groups out there that this is all they do. >> so use your gift card as soon as possible. here is another idea. try to cash out your gift card.

corp. air station in myanmar just east of interstate 15. in the last 30 minutes, we are hearing from the marine corps and they said the crash did not damage the property. search and rescue teams are looking for the pilot and they're trying to find out what led up to the crash. we're going to continue to follow the story and bring you the latest updates as soon as we get them, both on air as well as online. former president donald trump out on bail this morning after his arrest in atlanta. >> and the former president turning himself in to fulton county jail, making history. the first former president to actually get that mug shot. we're still waiting for a few more people to surrender. >> two more people. good morning. overnight we got world robert cheeley was booked in at the jail. there are two others in the alleged conspiracy that have not shown up.

prosecutors say they have until today before an arrest warrant is issued. the whole world new this man's name as he arrived in atlanta yesterday, stepped off his airplane with his signature blue suit and too long red tie. as you point out, donald trump became the first former president to have his mug shot taken. law enforcement hadn't taken one up until now because donald trump is one of the most recognized people in the world, making a mug shot largely unnecessary. but local law in georgia requires there. former president trump is out on $200,000 bond. he only posted 10%. he did it through a bail bondsman who says he's confident trump is not going to skip out on bail. >> i think this is probably the most secured bond that i've ever executed in my entire career. >> mark meadows surrendered earlier in the day thursday. there are 19 defendants in all. these are the suspects we have

mug shots for so far. all face racketeering charges, other charges vary. trump and giuliani face the most charges at 13 each. former president trump denies wrongdoing, saying it's his right to question the election results, but of course it's the actions, not the questioning, that led the prosecutor to file these latest charges. trump called into a right wing news network shortly after his release. >> a terrible experience. i came in, i was treated very nicely, but it is what it is. i took a mug shot, which i never heard the words mug shot. they didn't teach me that at the wharton school of finance. >> the four felony cases, more than 90 felony charges, do not seem to have damaged trump's approval numbers. he still leads in iowa, the first test for republican candidates. back when trump ran for president the first time, he made a lot of noise over investigations into hillary clinton, though those never got

as far as criminal charges. but trump warned a candidate facing investigation would never make a good president. her current scandals and controversies, he said, will continue throughout her presidency. it's going to be virtually impossible for her to govern. he also added, if she were to win, it would create an unprecedented constitutional crisis. laura? >> interesting. history being played out. thank you very much. new this morning, oakland unified just received a new report on how to improve services to schools, but there's staggering new data on the number of suspensions tied to violence. the firm public works, llc, analyzed disciplinary data. it found the year before the pandemic the number of suspensions at elementary schools was over 200, for both middle and high schools it was more than 500. in 2021, high school suspensions

numbered more than 1,800. this year, the numbers are higher for elementary and middle schools. analysts looked at suspensions or violence and weapons. in 2018 there were more than 200 elementary and middle school suspensions. high schools it was around over 400. last year that number went up for middle and high schools. currently, the only decrease is for high school, but it's still close to 600 suspensions. the report recommends a stronger intervention and prevention program, like implementing its master lockdown protocols. 6:35 right now. back to our coverage of the xfinity u.s. gymnastics championships in san jose. 11 athletes competing there have olympic experience. owning a total of 12 olympic medals. >> some of them may earn a chance to go for gold next year in paris. this pressure very well. who do you have with you this morning? >> reporter: well, we have an olympian as well who has chosen to enjoy the sport from afar. this is kevin tan, team captain of the beijing games, the team that went to the beijing games. you guys won bronze. why are you choosing to watch from this side instead of still being involved in the sport? >> oh, well, i just enjoy it so much, it's been such a huge part of my life. i do like watching it from afar, trying to participate with my family and just cheer on everything that's happening here, especially in san jose. the xfinity u.s. championships, they're the road to paris, right? there's a lot of excitement going on here and it's just fun to be a part of it. >> the folks at home are going to watch you on the rings, one of your specialties at the beijing games. what is it like to perform -- i mean, you were cool as a cucumber in that video. what's going on inside of these athletes? >> oh, a mile a minute.

it's all the preparation and work that you've done and then finally being able to, in that showcase moment, just take a breath and let it happen. that's what you try to do as an athlete. >> either you're focused or not focused, it's just so fast. >> it really is. you have split seconds within the sport of gymnastics. anything can happen at any point in time. the focus is extreme but you're nimble in trying to figure out, i've just got to move through and just continue to work through the routine. >> i want to get your opinion on how the day one for the men went. stanford just dominating at this point. they are holding the first place, fourth place, sixth place, right? you were saying when we were talking earlier that they're doing things that were never -- like didn't seem possible just a few years ago. >> yeah, and the stanford team is great and you have to understand that we have a deep field across the entire country here and it's a really fun time to be watching gymnastics. so if you were able to catch the

"today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab joins us from our newsroom. this would not be the first time police have been singled out in the bay area. what are people saying about this case? >> reporter: totally right, laura and marcus. not the first time this has happened in the bay area. earlier this year pizza squared fired an employee for asking officers to leave, back in 2021 hilda and jesse also faced backlash after refusing to serve three officers. this morning you're seeing reactions from both sides on social media about this, some calling this business suicide for this particular restaurant. on their instagram page a week

ago, reem's california said they are temporarily closing their doors on mission street to regroup, recenter, and re-concept, and that they will be open through sunday. that's a day after this incident allegedly happened. the san francisco poa saying one officer encountered anti-police bigotry and was refused service when he tried to get a cup of coffee on saturday. we have reached out to reem's to get their side to this, but have not yet heard back. the poa sharing an email response they received on august 23rd when they reached out to confirm this policy. it reads, quote, at reem's, we do have a policy not to serve anyone that is armed and in uniform. the president of the poa saying they want establishments to clearly post their policies. >> he was told by one of the workers there that they had a policy where they didn't serve people in uniform who were armed. you know, here we go again with

have teamed up with shelters across the bay area. >> bob redell is live for us at the valley humane society in pleasanton. i know you're an outgoing guy and i understand you made some new friends out there. >> reporter: we are. good morning to you, marcus and laura. we're in the new surgery center here at the valley humane society in pleasanton. unfortunately, there are a lot of cats and dogs that need new homes like this guy right here, bob redell, whose appearance and resemblance to me is uncanny. we're both salt and pepper. he's got a little darker eyes, but we both like to lick the microphone. emily schultz is the manager for the foster and adoption here at valley humane society. these two dogs have a unique story. they came from maui as a result of the fires. >> that's right, they came to us from the fremont shelter, but were transferred from the maui humane society. we've made room for the animals

who are homeless, who have lost their families in the fires. and we're grateful to be able to take care of dogs like this. bob has been in the shelter as a stray since june and valena has been there since april. this is a great dog that does need a home. she's just amazing, super friendly. great with other dogs. it's just so amazing to see how resilient a dog is after these adventures. she loves playing with bob. >> reporter: i was asked you earlier, what do you say to people who have never rescued an animal? what do you say to people who have never done it and might be hesitant? >> i would say that no dog is perfect. perfection is really in our own opinion. >> same thing with people. >> exactly. it's what we can get used to. but dogs and cats in shelters are not broken animals, there's not necessarily problems with these beautiful animals. they need new loving homes and most of the time they enter shelters because of people issues, not because of their own issues. these two dogs, as you can see,

miramar in remote terrain. we received an update indicating search and rescue teams are looking for the pilot. we're still awaiting a response from the driverless car company cruise following a crash involving one of its cars last night in san francisco. it happened around 9:30 on gough street near geary. the car was hit from behind. a witness said that it was struck by a construction backhoe. the witnesses also say the car was attempting to turn left into starr king way from the middle lane of a one-way street. the cruise car was empty at the time. the backhoe driver not injured. regulators recently ordered cruise to cut its fleet in half in the wake of recent crashes and traffic backups. we're going to have some cooler temperatures, just a little bit, as we head into the weekend. upper 80s and low 90s for the next several days, about normal
