australia. nbc news confirmed that three u.s. marines were killed in a helicopter crash off the coast of northern territory of australia. it happened around 9:30 local time during joint training exercises. 23 troops were on board the v-22 osprey when it went down off the coast of darwin. they were flying in support of australia's predator's run, an exercise that simulates military responses to potential future challenges in the south pacific, including china's influence on the region. at least 18 other troops were injured. five are in serious condition at mainland hospitals. the cause of the deadly crash is under investigation. and in other developing news back here locally, two juveniles were stabbed in san francisco's golden gate park. it happened around 9:30 last night off john f. kennedy drive. we're told they are expected to
7:03 am
be okay. no word on what led to the stabbing. but video taken near the scene shows police and park rangers trying to break up a large crowd. also no word on any arrests. our response team has on taped a new and disturbing snapshot showing that our identities are under attack. we have more to protect your identity. >> good morning. bottom line, impostors are unrelenting. they're targeting many people more than once. and stealing big money, even if you have taken steps to protect yourself. >> it's both startling and disheartening. >> reporter: eva runs the identity theft resource center in san diego. >> i don't think we as a society realize just how impactful identity crime victimization is. >> reporter: in helping victims,
7:04 am
they feel the pulse of identity theft today and it's concerning. 59% of victims said they secured their accounts with multifactor a authentication, yet crooks still found a way to steal identities. many victims feel anxiety, have difficulty sleeping, and trouble passing a background check for a new job. >> these are significant consequences. this doesn't just go on for a day or a week or a month or a year. this can be life long. >> reporter: two other findness the new report stand out. 26% of victims stay crooks stole more than $100,000 impersonating them. 41% said a crook has stolen their identity more than once. >> given the right set of circumstances, anyone can be an identity crime victim. >> we see so many cases here. >> reporter: that's steve mcfarland in san jose. >> we probably have 10 to 15 calls a week on identity theft. >> reporter: together, we'll run
7:05 am
through five ways to protect your identity. some you might know, others might be new. first, protect your paperwork. >> tax documents, financial documents, medical documents. >> reporter: each paper is a possible puzzle piece for a garbage picking crook. >> shred them, shred them. >> reporter: second, audit yourself. >> we get lazy sometimes. but check your bank statements. >> reporter: read every line, every month. some scammers try to fly under the radar. they quietly make tiny transactions to test if they have connected enough dots to pose as you. you might stop a big fraud if you report a small fraud first. >> it's easy to spot. >> reporter: third, freeze your credit file. a thief's goal is to open credit cards or loans. if your credit report is frozen, they're hosed. you can freeze your credit report free online.
7:06 am
go to the three big companies. >> it takes minutes and you don't need to speak to anybody. >> reporter: fourth, post fewer details on social media. sharing specifics is just daring a pretender to connect more dots. even ranting about something as plain as your cell carrier discloses a nugget that might help an impostor impersonate you. and step five -- >> the last thing is identity theft coverage or insurance. >> reporter: but before you buy a policy, do some homework. >> check with your homeowner's policy to see if you have coverage or with your bank or credit card agency. >> reporter: some credit cards throw in identity theft insurance. renter's insurance may cover it too. if you want to review those five steps or share them, we will post the story on our website, nbcbayarea.com/responds. to share it, just click the facebook or mail icon in the upper right. kira, back to you. and have a great weekend.

>> thanks, chris, you too. the food and drug administration is taking action in santa clara county after fighting a dangerous fruit fly in the area, which present a significant threat to the environment to agriculture. as a result, the economy of california. treatment began yesterday in the city of santa clara. but the fly has been found in portions of cupertino, san jose, and sunnyvale. an eradication team will be applying a natural atracktant and poison for the next couple of days. they will do that until the flies are no longer detected. the fda says this fruit fly is dangerous because it can invest and destroy more than 230 types of fruits and vegetables. officials believe someone either carried infested fruit into california from another location, or the infested fruit was mailed to them.

it was a big night last night at the xfinty u.s. gymnastics championships. today, the men's competition claim to a close with a crowning of a national champion, who has local ties. >> reporter: let me put it this way, one out of every five men competing here trained at tanford. -- stanford. asher hong, a 19-year-old stanford freshman, was the runner-up at the national collegiate championships not long ago, but would he do one spot better? he was a little steady at first, falling into third place. but then he turned it around. by the time the last rotation came on parallel bars, it was his turn to do the routine like
7:09 am
he's done a thousand times in practice, and he would win. well, that's just what hong did. >> it's really exciting. you know, i put in a lot of hard work in the gym. the next few weeks, if i'm selected for the world team, i'm going to go back and work just as hard to perform at the world, and hopefully get the team on the podium. >> you know, it doesn't surprise me that he ended up on top. we still have a lot of work to do to be competitive internationally. so he knows that. i keep telling him you have to compare yourself to the guys in japan and china and russia, not necessarily the guys in the college ranks. >> it wasn't just hong who did well, his teammate, roy young, finished second class. and colt walker finished in fourth. and it was a good day for his family, as well. his brother earned a spot on the
7:10 am
junior national team. and on the senior men's national team, stanford placed four different athletes on that team, capping off an amazing season for them. and of course, asher hong mentioned the world competition going up in a little more than year they will be looking at paris. >> wow, wonderful. thank you so much for that. you can watch highlight frsz the men's competition laterhi morning at 9:00 a.m. right here on nbc bay area. and then at 7:00 p.m., be sure to catch the final day of the women's competition. tickets are still available for the women's final if you would like to see it in person. we have the details on our website, nbcbayarea.com. then at the top in our friending bar, click on gymnastics. we have much more ahead. coming up, we go live to coming up, we go live to washinon, d.c. fgtor introducing togo's new frech dip sandwiches.

following wednesday's first gop presidential debate, the candidates are looking to capitalize on the attention and momentum, including adding donations to their campaigns. biotech multimillionaire vivek ramaswamy raised $450,000 that night alone. please join me in welcoming political director and moderator of "meet the press" chuck todd, who has a preview of today's show. hi, chuck. thanks for joining us this morning. you have ramaswamy as a guest of yours this morning. he was relatively unknown out of ohio prior to this debate. but he emerged as a star, you could say. what is he doing with this new-found momentum? >> well, look, he took advantage -- nobody took more advantage of donald trump than vivek ramaswamy. he became the trump candidate on stage. he was the one most comfortable hugging trump, defending trump, espousing some of his ideas on foreign policy for instance.
7:14 am
like not necessarily helping ukraine. so he, in some ways, took advantage of that vacuum. he got an assist from other candidates who clearly he gets under their skin, for whatever reason he did. and they concentrated their fire on him, i think almost feeding him, giving him more opportunity than i think in a couple of months they'll look back and see why they wasted their energy there and didn't focus more on ron desantis, for instance. it was fascinating to watch. i think you're going to see, he's still sort of evolving might be the most generous take on some of his views. he wrote a book in september of 2022 that he says things have changed since then. it's a big part of our conversation. >> yeah, i think i also read somewhere that he was not registered or registered as an independent in ohio previously.
7:15 am
as you mentioned -- >> i don't think ohio -- in fairness, the way ohio voter registration works, you don't get assigned a party until you vote in a primary. you can register to vote without picking a party type of thing. so there's some wiggle room there. but he's voted in two presidential elections total, and he's 38 years old. >> fascinating. and i believe chris christie compared him to barack obama. so there is a lot happening there. we look forward to your talk with him this morning, chuck. thank you so much for that preview. we hope you join chuck for for "meet the press." he'll have vivek ramaswamy as well as bernie sanders. "meet the press" is on at 8:00 a.m. right after this news cast. coming up in about 30 minutes from now, we'll talk to political analyst lryerston for our weekly segment. we'll take a look at that first republican presidential debate.
7:16 am
who gained the most favor after that debate? and who may have lost support? in case you missed it, the man known as the most popular game show host of alltime has died. bob barker passed away yesterday at the age of 99. from the bob barber show on the radio to his first tv show, nbc's "truth or consequences" so "the price is right," barkers with a daytime tv mainstay since the 1970s. he stepped down from "the price is right" in 2007 after a 35-year run. he also was a devout animal rights activist. in 1995, barker established the deejay and tee foundation, and he ended every show encouraging people to spa and neuter their pets. happening today, silicon valley pride festival celebrations continue in downtown san jose. they started last night with live music.
7:17 am
later this morning, 10:00 a.m., the parade gets underway. make sure to look out for our nbc bay area float. we will have the team riding on it. the route starts at julian and market street, and ends at the plaza where the festival continues until 6:00 tonight. if you're looking for something closer to home to do today, we have some ideas in this weekend calendar. >> good morning, kira. i'm happy to share the return of the self-proclaimed longest running egyptian festival in the bay area. the king tut festival returns to the youth center, the cyc, where they will transport you back in time. more than just four years ago when they last had an in-person event. way back to experience the culture of ancient egypt, sharing traditions and a bustling bazaar. and now we go to a fund-raisr,
7:18 am
that gets you a plant-based meal, you see a speed painter create a one of a kind piece. this is to rate funds for a farm animal rescue. over 38 acres of land to care for. let's change it up from goats to hogs or any other kind of motorcycles. san jose's medical center is a level two trauma center. so they see plenty of injured motorcycle riders. today, they are inviting riders to their first motorcycle crash response event to learn some life saving actions that you can take. if there is a need, there could be help right there, too. and then tomorrow, for your morning commute, i'll be right here, for you on "today in the bay." >> see you tomorrow, mike. trending right now, get ready for national cinema day. >> four, three, two, one --
7:19 am
>> come on, mario! >> today, thousands of theaters across the u.s. will offer tickets for just $4. that includes some of this year's hottest hits, including "barbie," "oppenheimier" and many more. this is the second year theaters have done this. amc theaters are also offering discounted popcorn. wow. time to check in with cinthia pimentel for a look at the forecast. it's going to warm up a bit. i don't think enough to warrant the ac at the movie theater. but man, $4 tickets. how can you turn that down? >> if only we can get the concession stands to also offer the deal. we were talking about what is behind us, a little gloomy start over san jose. things are turning up and we will be much more colorful, much more sunshine as we do look at
7:20 am
our silicon valley pride forecast down here in san jose. all the activity starts around 10:00 a.m. we'll warm up nicely into the 80s. so bring sunglasses, sun screen, water, everything to enjoy and have a nice time out there. what do the temperatures look like for today around the bay area? a little bit similar to what we saw yesterday. mixed in with some of the hazy sunshine too. 70s in san francisco. that sounds like a nice day out there. we'll do some 80s around the bay. 85 in napa. 87 here. before we head more inland, we get the low 90s like in concord, 92. 94 in fairfield. 90 in santa rosa. we will do 90s down here in the santa clara valley, as well. mixing in some of the hazy sunshine, because we do have the smoke advisory to wrap up the weekend. all of that smoke from the pacific northwest going to make our categories right there in the moderate. if you do have any sensitivity to, you know, your airways or
7:21 am
anything like that, just watch for that smoke drifting in through the bay area. the northwest winds going to drag in some of the smoke. i would say closer to the coastline, mendocino, president -- point reyes. we're also going to keep an eye on it for monday. some of that could turn more unhealthy for the northern parts of the state, closer to reading up there. and what else are we watching? those warmer temperatures. we're going to see an uptick in temperatures day by day as we get into our warmest day on wednesday. so by monday, slightly warmer in the valleys. we have 80s and mid 90s in fairfield. this will continue to climb as we go on tuesday. novato, 92. 77 in san francisco. very mild out there. and the winds will tart to die down by wednesday. seeing 70s, 80s, 90s, even
7:22 am
triple digit temperatures in fairfield, 102. and a sizzling day. make sure you're taking care of yourself and each other, drinking plenty of water and avoiding the sun when you just need a little bit of a break. san francisco, 70s until we get to about friday, where we see a low pressure system drop in from the pacific northwest. that will help cool things down from those scorching 90s back down to the 80s. more pleasant weather in the inland valleys. >> cinthia, thanks so much. 7:21 right now. much more ahead. coming up, a bad month has the giants outside the wild card picture. are they playing good teams or just playing bad baseball? we'll hear from manager dav

good morning, everyone. i'm anthony flores. the giants have fallen out of the wild card picture after a rough month on the diamond. the orange and black taking on the braves at oracle park. 3rd inning, a two-run homer by
7:25 am
wilmer flores ties the score at 2-2. but then the braves take over. atlanta goes on to win 7-3. the giants have lost 12 of their last 16 games. they fall a game and a half out of the final wild card spot. >> it's just not good enough for these really good teams. they're playing better baseball than us. this is pitching, it's hitting, it's defense, baserunning, and it's an entire group effort. we lose as a team, and we have really lost these games against teams, as a team. just not one area in particular. >> basically, it's just everything. they have to do everything better. all right. the a's two-game winning streak came to a halt in chicago. the white sox slam three homers on their way to a 6-2 victory. despite the loss, the a's have won four of the last six games. the bay area is no longer trey area. the 49ers traded trey lance
7:26 am
friday to the cowboys for a fourth round pick. the team announced the deal on saturday. injuries and the emergence of brock purdy kept the former number three overall pick from getting the reps he needed, and maybe reaching his full potential. coach kyle shanahan feels like he shares in some of the blame. >> i always feel like i left trey down. i brought him here and i'm responsible. i didn't want to throw him into the heat of battle right away, but i thought he needed to play. when we told him that he would be the three, he could find another opportunity that was good, we would allow him to do that, and he did. we felt he will be better for it and we will, too. >> san jose state kicking off the college football season on the road at number 6 usc. nick nash had three touchdown catches. that made it a one-score game. spartans thinking upset. but usc says no.
7:27 am
they dominated the second half. caleb williams tosses four touchdown passes and the final score was 56-28. that's a look at sports. i'm anthony flores. >> anthony, thanks so much. still to come on "today in the bay," a tiny pest poses a major threat for one of california's biggest exports and it's right here in the bay area. how fda officials think it got here. plus, were you able to bring home a new family member? how you helped us clear the shelters and find forever homes shelters and find forever homes fo dozens of pets acrro oh ms. flores, what would we do without you? leader of many, and pet wrangler too.

7:31 am
temperatures. and i'm tracking something developing in the tropics that could be a little bit of bad news for florida. that's coming up in ten minutes. >> cinthia, thanks. new overnight, we are following several deadly car crashes across the bay area. the first was a car versus pedestrian on a freeway in san francisco. it happened just before 2:30 this morning on south bound 280, north of 101. the chp says the pedestrian died at the scene. the driver is cooperating. all lanes are now reopened. around the same time, just after 2:30 this morning, we heard of another fatal crash in the east bay. it happened on 580 near eden canyon road in dublin. that scene has been cleared and the road reopened. and then just before 3:00 a.m., this head-on collision in san francisco, which sounds like it could have been a wrong-way driver. it happened on north bound 101 south of 280 and silver avenue.
7:32 am
the chp says two people died. all lanes are now back open. around the same time, another deadly crash on the peninsula. it happened on southbound 280 under highway 92 in san mateo. the chp says that black suv crashed into a concrete pillar, causing it to stall in the middle lane. and then a white honda crv crashed into it. the chp says the driver in the black suv died. the other two people in the crv have minor injuries. traffic is still being diverted to east bound 92. police are now asking your help to find a person responsible for a bloody fight, apparently between a 49ers fan and a raiders fan at a santa clara in and out burger. police say at least ten people were involved in the brawl friday night about an hour after that 49ers preseason game at levi stadium against the l.a.

chargers. we have video taken by someone there. it shows several people being hit, kicked, and shoved around. the video goes on to show one man stabbing another person on the floor. in all, two people were stabbed. paramedics took them to the hospital. video from yesterday shows it was business as usual with customers back at the drive through, walking into the restaurant. some customers say they aren't too worried about that incident, saying they think it was isolated. no word yet on the conditions of those two stabbing victims. but police are asking anyone who witnessed that fight or may have videotaped it to give them a call. a florida city is reeling from a mass shooting yesterday. apparently driven by hate. four people are dead in jacksonville, florida, after a white shooter opened fire at a dollar general store. he killed three black people before turning the gun on himself. the jacksonville sheriff says the gunman lived with his

parents in a nearby town. he walked into the store with a gun bearing a swastika. investigators say he wrote three manifestos filled with hate against black people. one for his parents, another for the media, and one for police. neighbors are stunned. >> portions of these manifestos detail the shooter's disgusting ideology of hate. but this shooting was racially motivated, and he hated black people. >> i'm emotional. it's unjust that we can't even walk on the sidewalks. we're not safe in any stores. >> the victims were two men and one woman. the fbi is investigating the shooting as a hate crime. going to turn now to the wagner mercenary group. the chief has been confirmed dead after a plane crash last week. russian officials say after the

examinations, all ten were identified. the jet was going to st. petersburg. it crashed about 50 miles north of moscow two months to the day after his failed coup attempt against president vladamir putin. the kremlin denied it was behind the incident. more speculation is pointing to the cause of the deadly wildfires on maui that were electrical. cnbc reports that the associated press investigated several images it attained of electric wires near the source of the fire. they concluded when high winds brought down power poles, bare, uninsulated wires fell to the ground, sparking the grass. on top of the danger from the lines, hawaiian electric's mostly wooden power poles were not sturdy and needed to be replaced. the utility is facing several lawsuits for not taking steps like not shutting off power in
7:36 am
the winds. hawaiian electric says it has recognized the threats from climate change and spent millions in response. investigators have not released an official cause of the fires. back here locally, dozens showed up with the district attorney pamela price. the message for price was that people want something done about the city's crime wave. while people shared personal stories and concerns, price talked about how she is tackling problems. >> things are out of control. it's very different than the oakland i grew up in. and so as a community, i'm really hoping that we can find a way to stop the violence. >> we really have improved much more of the staffing, the mental health and the collaborative part. we started a pilot program also. >> representatives from oakland
7:37 am
police and the mayor's office also spoke. the meeting touched on everything from crime to education, literacy and justice with compassion. price saysshe is likely facing a growing recall. the u.s. food and drug administration is taking emergency action in santa clara after finding a dangerous species of fruit fly in the area. the fda says they represent a significant threat to agriculture, and to the economy of california. treatment began yesterday in the city of santa clara. but the fly has also been found in portions of cupertino, san jose and sunnyvale. an eradication team will be applying a natural atracktant and poison. they will repeat that every other week until the flies are no longer detected. the fruit fly can infest and

destroy more than 230 types of fruits and vegetables from citrus to grapes and avocados. officials believe someone either carried infested fruit into california from another location, or that the infested fruit was mailed to them. we're going to turn back now to one of our favorite events of the year. nbc bay area and telemundo 48 have teamed up with our partners across the nation, and the bay area to help clear the shelters and help animals find their forever homes. yesterday, there was an event in berkeley where 147 animals were adopted. and there's more. at least 50 cats and dogs were adopted in san martin. terry mcsweeney has recap. >> reporter: for most of this year, the animal services center here has been at maximum capacity, overwhelming with the

>> good morning, kira. everybody has their own opinion, but i think three people came out pretty well, better than the others. certainly nikki haley for the way she finessed the abortion issue. mike pence for his stern defense what he did january 6th. and perhaps vivek ramaswamy. why? he was the most trump-like. if donald trump was looking for a vp, he found one with vivek ramaswamy because they think and act very much alike. so i think those are the three. as far as a couple of losers, maybe that's the wrong word, but ron desantis, for not being firm on a number of the issues. he equivocated a lot. and chris christie just didn't do it when it came to attacking donald trump. oh, he touched on it a bit, but he was not nearly as firm and outspoken as we might have expected. >> what about trump?
7:51 am
he obviously wasn't there, but his presence was felt. do you think this impacts him at all? >> kira, his presence was felt in more ways than you can possibly imagine. we have a clip to run to give you the whole story in 20 seconds. take a look. >> you all signed a pledge to support the eventual republican nominee. if former president trump is convicted in a court of law, would you still support him as your party's choice? please raise your hand if you would. [ applause ] >> there you have it. six out of eight said they would vote for president trump if he was convicted of a felony. and you heard the roar of the crowd afterwards. that tells you a lot about how republicans are feeling about donald trump. absence noted notwithstanding. >> and those votes themselves were from the candidates.
7:52 am
what about republicans in general? i mean, the crowd was cheering, so it sounds like they were positive about trump. >> take a look at the poll that we found from just a couple of days ago, august 25th on where republicans stand now when it comes to their choice for the nomination. look at the number, donald trump, 58%. theyre congealing and coming together. all of these indictments have no impact. if anything, they have solidified republican support for him. so i'm telling you, he's just moving along at a fast clip. he's pulling the republicans together in favor of himself, donald trump. and you have to kind of wonder at the same time, kira, as he's moving along and the republicans are getting behind him, what's happening with the democrats? will they be able to congeal and come behind joe biden in a way particular? because if they can't, watch out. it's going to be a closer
