>> and i'm jessica layton. we begin this morning with a tropical storm watch in the gulf coast. florida is bracing for a potential hit from a hurricane. tropical storm adahlia is expected to gain strength before making landfall within about 40 hours. governor ron desantis has issued a state of emergency. he is mobilizing over a thousand national guard members to help support any impacted areas. let's get an update now on that storm's path. michelle grossman has been tracking it for us. good morning. >> good morning to you both. now is the time to prepare because we could see the landfall as early as wednesday morning. let's take a look at the latest. winds at 60 miles per hour. that makes ate pretty strong tropical storm. we do expect the cat 2, cat 3 level as we head towards wednesday when it makes that landfall. it's stationary right now. it's going to start to move to the north and east into the gulf of mexico. really warm waters there. bath-like waters. that's going strengthen the storms as we head later today into tuesday and eventually into

wednesday. tropical alerts along the coast of florida. pink is a hurricane watch. we also have tropical storm watches and warnings along the west coast of florida. also looking at chance of storm surges. we could see life-threatening storm surges even up to 11 feet in some spots all along the west coast of florida that will be the case the next 12 days and rain a big story as well. throughout time we're going to watch this strengthen as we go throughout today and tomorrow making that landfall wednesday. we'll have more on this in just a bit. >> all right, michelle. thank you so much. three u.s. marines have been killed in a helicopter crash in australia. it happened sunday morning during multinational training exercises in the north of the country. the cause is still under investigation. the helicopter the marines were on has been involved in other fatal accidents before. our aaron gilchrist has the story. >> reporter: a military aircraft similar to this one at the center of a deadly crash in australia. the u.s. marine corps confirming three marines are dead and five

are seriously hurt after their mv-22v asprey crashed sunday morning during a routine training exercise. the accident happened on melville island just off the northern coast of australia. >> this is regrettable incident. the defense force cooperating with our friends in the united states, defense force to make sure that we provide every assistance possible. >> reporter: the marine corps saying 23 personnel were being transported, participating in exercise predators run. it's a multinational military training involving more than 2,000 troops from five countries. jeff gazettety is a former accident investigator for the navy and marines. >> this is a very unique aircraft, and it does have a higher accident rate than other types of aircraft used by the military for that very reason. >> reporter: the tilt rotor osprey is a widely used support aircraft in the marine corps. it can lift like a helicopter and tilt the engine housing to achieve speed like a plane. but it has a controversial history of problems.

march 2022 four marines died in a training flight in norway. the marine corps says pilot error caused the crash. june 2022, five more marines died when their osprey went down in california. investigators say the result of a catastrophic mechanical failure. still, gazetti says the osprey is an extremely useful life-saving tool for the military. >> i think it's worth it to have these types of aircraft out there, even though they do present additional hards that need to be mitigated. >> reporter: the last word from the marine corps is the five critically injured marines were in serious condition at a darwin hospital. there was a wide range of injuries among all 23 people on board. back to you. >> all right, aaron, thank you. we're learning more this morning about the horrific attack in jacksonville, florida, from a gunman opened fire at a dollar general store there, killing three black victims. police say before the rampage at the store, the shooter first

stopped at a historically black university, and they believe video shows him getting ready with a bulletproof vest. the university says he refused to identify himself so he was told to leave campus. the sheriff says the gunman identified as 21-year-old ryan palmeter took his own life, and that he left behind messages of racial hate. >> his sickening ideology is not represented by the values this jacksonville community that we all love so much. we are not a community of hate. we stand united with the good and decent people of this city. we reject this inexcusable violence. >> president biden released a statement saying we must refuse to live in a country where black families live in fear of being gun down because of the color of their skin. the justice department is investigating this as a hate crime. russian officials say they can confirm the mercenary leader yevgeny prigozhin is indeed dead after dna testing identified his remains from last week's plane crash outside moscow. nine others perished in what is

strongly suspected to be an assassination. vladimir putin's revenge for the short-lived rebellion two months ago. prigozhin led wagner's fighters in a march on moscow downing aircraft and killing russian soldiers before ultimately standing down. the kremlin has denied it had anything to do with the crash, but u.s. intelligent officials have told nbc news it was likely caused by sabotage, possibly by a bomb on board. in georgia, one of the defendants accused of attempting to overturn the 2020 election will argue for moving his trial from state to federal court. it is a hearing that will set the stage early for a case that includes a former president and many of his men. nbc's ryan nobles has this story. >> reporter: as former president donald trump remains defiant in the face of four criminal indictments -- >> we did nothing wrong. i did nothing wrong. >> reporter: a high-stakes hearing is set for fulton county georgia on monday. mark meadows, trump's former

chief of staff and one of 18 trump associates charged in fulton county for running what was akin to a criminal enterprise to conspire to steal the 2020 election, requesting his case be moved to federal court. >> mark meadows is essentially arguing that he fits within the federal criminal removal statute because he was acting at the behest of a federal official. >> reporter: district attorney fani willis issuing subpoenas for francis watson and secretary of state brad ralphsffenraffense republican secretary of state who took this call from trump in wake of the 2020 vote. >> i just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. because we won the state. >> reporter: the hear willing be the first opportunity to hear from some of these key witnesses in open court. if meadows is successful moving the trial the federal court, it

could have an impact on other defendants, including trump himself. >> the jury pool will come from a larger geographic area. they may be able to drag in some of those suburban trump voters. you'd also be taking the state prosecutors out of their home court advantage. >> reporter: meanwhile, trump continues to try and attempt to use his arrest as way to rally his base. his campaign announcing they have raised more than 7 million since his mug shot was taken and released. >> all right, ryan, thank you. two suspects have been arrested after a mass shooting in boston. at least eight people were hurt when gunfire erupted early saturday morning. the shooting happened near the parade for the caribbean carnival, but police say it was not related to that group. they believe two groups were fighting along the outskirts of the parade. multiple guns were recovered from the scene. all of the victims are expected to survive. locals on maui had yet another scare on saturday when a brushfire erupted mere miles

from the lahaina neighborhood that was decimated by fires just a couple of weeks ago. this latest fire burned about 10 acres and forced limited evacuations before firefighters put it out. unlike last time, fire sirens did sound in that area. hawaiian authorities have come under intense criticism for alleged mishandling of the fires, which caught many of the locals there offguard. at least 115 people had been confirmed dead. hundreds more are still missing. investigators in louisiana say one of the rare wildfires tearing flew the state was started on purpose. it's just one of more than 440 fires that have raged there this weekend. another fire forced an entire town of thousands of people to evacuate. the brutal heatwave in the south has helped fuel the fires. all right. just a little bit ago, we talked about some of the dangers posed by tropical storm id dahlia. michelle, what is the latest on that storm? >> we're going see the impacts

within the next 48 harris. really heavy rainfall, to 10 inches in some spots, life-threatening storm surge and really gusty winds. now is a strong tropical storm. later today it's going to merge into the gulf. we're going to see it intensify to a cat-1 storm and tomorrow up to a category 2. we're expecting landfall early wednesday. we're going watch that closely along the west coast of florida that is going to move across the state. even into wednesday, thursday, we're looking at really heavy rain in portions of the carolinas. that's going to coincide with a really high tide. take a look at some of the totals. where you see the reds, the oranges, the yellows, we could possibly see up to 10 inches of rain in some spots. also life-threatening storm surge when the waterwarm, but n

nessie quest in 50 years. for this region of scotland, the legend of the loch ness monster is still kind of a big deal. but organizers are hoping that this weekend will excite a new generation of nessie hunters. >> it's about tradition. and for a very selfish reason, i don't want the loch ness mystery or the interest itself to diminish. >> reporter: it will be hard for nessie to hide from this high-tech hunt. they're launching drones overhead, scouring the surface while also listing the low. so we're dropping a hydrophone, which is an underwater microphone 60 feet. we're going to be doing some audio testing to find out what noises exist down there. and they're using sonar to map the lake, which has a depth of nearly 800 feet. >> nessie herself decided to swim under the boat right now, we are going get to see a real mystery. >> reporter: somewhere in all this dark water, there is a monster lurking, but it's up to us to find it.
