this is indicative of what is to come. we're going to be gradually warming up this week, final days of august. it's the last monday of the month, i want to get you prepared. we're going to see 70s and 80s, deeper into the valleys low 90s, and we'll ramp up temperatures as we go into tuesday and wednesday. i'll track you through all of those temperatures, but for now, mike is tracking a crash in the east bay. we've been watching this for a few minutes, no slowing and no major injuries reported. the surface street, there's a section that is closed until january, there was some storm damage, but everything is moving smoothly, that's not as a result of this crash. everything else getting toward the bay bridge is moving smoothly, including the north bay on 101 down through the golden gate bridge, a smooth flow of traffic. same thing through the south bay. again, this crash is eastbound 580. you have a more serious incident

that happened earlier. >> a busy night. one person is dead after being struck by a car while walking in lanes on the freeway. it happened a little before midnight on interstate 580 near grand avenue. the chp says the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with police. investigators would like to talk with anyone who may have seen anything. a young person was stabbed after a number of fights broke out at a popular mall in the east bay. >> bob redell is joining us live this morning. this disturbance involved hundreds of people. >> reporter: correct. good morning to you. one of those people brought a gun. this is cell phone video that captures the sound of at least one gunshot at the bay street mall in emeryville. you can see people running away as a result. police confirmed that someone did fire a gun. officers evacuated the mall and the nearby theatre where people had been watching movies. emeryville police say a business called 911 yesterday to report

about 50 young adults causing a disturbance. officers escorted those people out. 45 minutes later, police say another group of around 100 young adults arrived at the mall, followed by another 100. that's when fights broke out in the mall courtyard and police had to call in other agencies to help break them up. >> we were grocery shopping and then we are very surprised that a lot of the police, cops were there. we were very surprised because we thought it was a very safe place, so actually we moved in last week. >> reporter: later in the evening, one person, a juvenile, was stabbed, taken to the hospital, is expected to be okay, fortunately. the city confirms at least one person was arrested. police want anyone who witnessed these fights to get in touch with them. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> a lot of details there, thank you. to decision 2024, former president donald trump today will keep a close eye on two separate hearings that may

impact the direction of next year's presidential election. "today in the bay"'s drew petrimoulx explains each hearing surrounds criminal cases linked to the president and the 2020 election results he tried to overturn. >> reporter: mark meadows, the chief of staff to former president trump, due in an atlanta courtroom today, one of 19 accused in a scheme to overturn 2020 election results in georgia, meadows is seeking to have his case switched from state to federal court, a move that could impact other defendants in the case, including trump. >> the jury pool will come from a larger geographic area and they may be able to drag in some of those suburban trump voters. you would also be taking the same prosecutors out of their home court advantage s. >> reporter: also monday, a hearing in washington, d.c. where a judge could set a trial date in another of trump's criminal cases. >> i don't know if it's four or five or six or how many indictments it is now, but he's going to spend a lot of time in a courtroom and not on a campaign trail. >> reporter: his rivals in the

republican primary are hoping to put a dent in trump's sizable lead in the polls with the first debate now behind them. >> i remain more confident after wednesday night that the republican nominee will not be the former president. >> reporter: president biden trying to appear above the fray. >> we're not going to focus on donald trump's legal problems. >> reporter: but getting his message to voters has been difficult. polls show americans are skeptical of president biden's policies. >> we're going to continue to do what we've been doing, and that is to talk to people about the fact that we're creating jobs. >> reporter: the next presidential election 15 months away, but campaigns in full swing. drew petrimoulx, nbc news, washington. 5:05 this morning. florida investigators now say the shooter in the racially motivated rampage at that dollar general store purchased his weapons legally. three innocent people died before the shooter, a 21-year-old white man, killed himself saturday in jacksonville as police were rushing in. authorities say that he had no

criminal record and no red flags that would have stopped him from being able to purchase the guns. he also left no doubt about his intentions in a hate-filled manifesto. >> portions detailed the shooter's disgusting ideology of hate. plainly put, the shooting was racially motivated and he hated black people. >> meanwhile, a north texas man over the weekend built crosses for those victims, setting them up a few blocks from the scene of the shooting. over the past few years he's also built crosses for victims of violence in ukraine and uvalde. he says that he does it in hopes that others will heal from the tragedy. last night, president biden spoke with the mayor and sheriff of jacksonville, offering his full support. happening now in fairfield, police are asking for your help to find a woman last seen eight days ago and the man they say was living with her. 36-year-old erica brown disappeared from her home last sunday sunday in fairfield, in a case police are calling suspicious.

they say this man, her boyfriend, mark randle, was living at the home, and also cannot be found. they're calling him a person of interest. randle was last seen driving a four-door black mercedes sedan from the early 2000s. one bay area woman is making it her mission to educate people about the dangers of fentanyl and overdose prevention. michelle leapold says her son died inside his dorm room from taking a fentanyl-laced pill. she teamed up with workers and held a training and awareness session to teach people how to use narcan to potentially save someone who is overdosing. >> you minister the first dose of narcan. it's one push and that is one whole dose. this is very personal. this is how i'm trying to find some purpose in my pain. >> the event also took place ahead of this wednesday's

international overdose awareness day. taking a live look outside, overlooking san jose in oakland this morning. you may notice some smoke advisory actually continues for the bay area due to the big fires that are happening near california's oregon border. >> forecaster cinthia pimentel is here with more details. >> it's been extended day by day through saturday, sunday, today, and those fires in the pacific northwest really having an impact with the way the winds are flowing into the bay area. if you are sensitive, have respiratory issues, north bay, the coast and through the santa clara valley, going to be in the moderate category. something to watch over the next couple of days as it might get pushed out. the way that these winds are flowing, by the middle of the day today, midmorning, we should see some of the mendocino coastline, marin coastline, and most of us seeing hazy skies continue. the winds are going to start to shift as we go into tuesday and

gradual warm-up, 82 degrees by your lunchtime hour and we'll continue to warm up through the middle of the week. we're looking at the golden gate bridge and a smooth drive. you can see it from the top of the screen, making its way across the golden gate bridge. a clear view. we are tracking where things should start to slow coming up. good morning. very happy monday to you. busy week ahead. we get information on inflation, there's the big jobs report at the end of the week. all eyes really on china. the government there asking chinese mutual funds to take a break from selling stock from their portfolios, and that's a bad sign. our commerce secretary is in china, gina raimondo met with chinese minister of commerce in parts of efforts to deepen communication between the u.s. and the peoples republic of china. even as we continue to cut china off from american high-tech. the interest on student loans resumes on friday.

payments will resume in october. this, after a three-year break because of covid. as you'll remember, after the biden administration lost its case in the supreme court, it promised the republicans it would start making americans pay back their student loans as part of the deal to keep the government open and raise the debt ceiling. now, the resumption of student loans is going to be tough on the millions of americans who have to start writing checks again, but it's also likely to be difficult on small businesses, restaurants, nail salons, anywhere people spent money they won't now have, hundreds of dollars a month. the good news is, it will likely help fight inflation. less money in american's pockets, less money flowing into the economy is always disinflationary. the biden administration will announce the names of the first ten drugs medicare will offer less money for, part of the act passed last year. these are likely names you've

heard on commercials, jardiance, probably on the list. this is good news for medicare and saving money for the government, but also it should lower those drug prices for everyone as well. >> which is huge. >> thanks, scott. programmers and developers gathered in palo alto exploring the latest developments for what may be technology's most important asset, computer chips. stanford hosting the 30th annual hot chips conference. it started yesterday and it runs through tomorrow. attendees are learning about latest advancements in chip technology, including presentations on design and manufacturing. one of the event founders says, while most chips are now manufactured overseas, the designs are still centered in silicon valley. >> nvidia, they were actually starting out to do not big processors, but rather smaller

processors that were used for graphics. they were optimized to do graphics. and it turns out that that same approach is very useful for doing machine learning. >> many industry leaders are putting their hardware on display and nvidia helped open this year's event, which was completely sold out. trending right now, barbie this morning breaking another box office record. >> almost in barbie fashion this morning. >> i wasn't planning it. >> the film is just about to set the highest-grossing global release in warner bros. history. they'll officially take over harry potter for the top spot. the "barbie" film over the weekend earning another $18 million worldwide, putting its gross at $1.3 billion. it's expected to soon pass the super marios movie to become this year's top grossing film

year. so i'm bringing good news. san jose, beautiful start downtown. it was a beautiful weekend, as we celebrated the silicon valley pride out there, and it's going to be a gorgeous day. we're going to gradually warm-up. by your lunchtime hour, plenty of sunshine, 78 degrees. we are going to warm up day by day as we get to the hottest day, expected to be wednesday. as we take a look at temperatures through today, 70s and 80s around the bay, mixed in with hazy sunshine that will push through the area. once we start to go into the valleys, we've got 90 in martinez and livermore, 93 for morgan hill, continuing through the sought county. so that will be the story today, along with what we're tracking in the tropics. the tropical storm idalia expected to intensify into a category 1 hurricane today, gaining speed as it goes over the hot waters of the gulf we've been talking about, and as it gets closer to that florida

coastline, it could be a category 3 hurricane wednesday morning. so if you have any relatives that live along there, make sure you spread the word, and i'll continue to track the impact as we get closer to that event. we're going to have our own event to talk about, the heat. tomorrow we're going to see valleys in the mid-90s, warming up. the wind will start to become a little more dryer. on wednesday, this is the day i'm a little concerned about, as those winds will become more of a north-northwest. so through the north bay mountains and those very warm temperatures, those a little bit sparking up my concern for some potential for wildfire weather out there. we're going to see hot triple-digit temperatures in fairfield and that heat will continue from fremont down into the santa clara valley. cooler weather as we go into thursday and friday. we'll see a system of low pressure drop from the pacific northwest that should bring about more of that breeze, more of those winds. still, prepare for the heat, make sure that you and your loved ones are staying hydrated,

wearing that sunscreen. even san francisco will see some very mild days ahead today through wednesday. that looks like a nice day out there in the city before it becomes more breezy, cooling down and cloudier as we go into friday, and the weekend back down into the 60s. mike, what are commuters looking like this morning? >> moving smoothly right now. we're looking at green, green sensors, a bit of slowing out of the altamont. everything is pretty much on schedule as we typically predict. highway 37 just in the last few second started a little slowing. let's check highway 4, one or two blips out of bay point and into concord. at the top of the screen here, westbound 80 does have one crash. everything should be off to the shoulder. meanwhile, getting through the east bay, the volume of traffic looks like this as you travel north past the oakland coliseum and toward the bay bridge toll plaza. from richmond to san rafael,

>> we heard from some folks in the east bay that some pest control companies are going door to door saying there's an insect infestation, so you should hire them. let's do two things, check that claim, and help you hire the right pro. first, about that alleged bug bounceback, we asked san jose state entomology expert, and he said the pest population appears to be normal right now. still, he said you might find insects are eager to get inside your home because it's so dry outside and they want to find water. if you decide to hire a pest control company, know this, california licenses pest control people. they should be able to show you a license card like this, because applying pesticide the wrong way has consequences. >> it can be anywhere from an ineffective treatment to hazards to the environment, pets, animals, children, anything

midmorning. plenty of sunshine, 70 degrees, and then quickly rising to 80 degrees as people head out the door for lunch. bring the sunscreen and sunglasses. we're going to warm up through the week, continuing with the hazy skies from the wildfire smoke that continues to usher into the bay area. then cooler weather next weekend. let's check on the roads on this final monday morning. >> we're looking at san jose, 101. we're seeing a little more traffic, which we expect to see. i'll mark it with the arrow, northbound 101 was where the headlights were going. we'll see the sensors change from green to yellow and that will be the first build, just about 5:40 in the morning. so far we have the build for highway 4 out of concord into pittsburg and bay point. some more slowing build, as is tradition, toward the carquinez bridge. the bay bridge seeing more traffic but a little slowing as

folks focus on the incline. back to you. >> thank you. 5:32 right now. a los gatos mother accused of hosting alcohol-fueled parties for minors is set to appear in court this morning. she was a no-show when she was supposed to appear last week. >> kris sanchez is live outside of the courthouse. this really seems like a case where we're seeing surprise twists pretty much every step of the way. >> reporter: shannon o'connor remains in custody, she's been in custody since she was arrested. they could not reach a plea deal, so the trial has been going on. but now the last time she was supposed to be in court, she was a no-show, and that's because she was in the hospital being treated for a skin infection. this is what she told our investigative unit, she told them, i have wounds packed full of gauze in two locations, and then added, quote, i've been waiting two years for this moment. i don't want this postponed. i want to move forward.

this is o'connor at a previous hearing. she claims that the skin infection is from bed bug bites she got while in custody at elmwood correctional facility. that was corroborated by other nbc bay area sources. however, a santa clara county sheriff's deputy told us there were no signs of beg bugs in her unit. we also confirmed that o'connor was hospitalized back in october of last year after she was assaulted by five other inmates and suffered a head injury, concussion and a broken nose. o'connor has been in custody since her arrest in october of 2021. the santa clara county district attorney's office claims that for eight months o'connor provided enough alcohol to her 14-year-old son, his friends, to get drunk and then encouraged sexual activity among them, some of which she watched. now, she is also accused of sexual battery and faces 39 charges in all. the judge in this case has requested her medical records to determine whether or not this

case can move forward or when it can move forward. the court opens up for session at 9:00 this morning and we'll be there. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> a lot to go through. kris, thank you. happening today, a south bay man accused of selling and storing about a half a ton of illegal fireworks is expected in court for a plea hearing. in early july san jose police arrested mark es spin know squa and he's accused of distributing it. he's being held on $1 million bail. happening now, authorities in the north bay are looking for a driver in a deadly hit and run. chp wants you to look at this suv. take a look at your screen now. they're trying to locate the woman they say was driving. the hit-and-run happened around 7:30 yesterday morning in santa

rosa. police believe the car has major damage to the front of its hood, grill, bumper and headlight. 5:35 this morning. all talk, no action. that's what housing rights activists are saying about leaders on the peninsula, who they believe are delaying taking action on one city's worsening housing crisis. >> today they're ready to move forward with change. ginger conejero saab is in our studio here. ginger, this is one struggle to make it in the bay that includes some big allegations. >> reporter: that's right, laura and marcus. it has been over a year since redwood city adopted an initial strategy to address anti-displacement, but advocates say that's not enough. according to these housing rights advocates, they say one ordinance has not been passed. among the group fighting for change is faith in action bay area. they released a list of solutions they say will address housing issues, and there's quite a list of concerns. they include harassment and

discrimination, loophole evictions through renovations, and rental rights that are not being upheld, specifically for low-income and working class residents following the pandemic. >> there is a real crisis of families who are being unjustly evicted from their homes, families that are unable to pay rent and are experiencing harassment from their landlords, and these ordinances are really essential to keeping families in their homes and preventing displacement in our community. >> reporter: advocates assert immigrant leaders have presented the council with ideas and possible solutions to no avail. among their proposals, a local just cause for evictions that goes beyond state law, and also a creation of a central office as a resource for people. now, the city council meets at 7:00 p.m. today. faith in action bay area plans to hold a rally at 5:30, and will then later join the meeting to make their public comments. definitely have to keep an eye out to see how this further

develops, guys. back to you. >> thank you so much. the high cost of child care, the effects from climate change and skyrocketing housing costs are some of the major issues south bay representative ro khanna promises to focus on when congress returns from its august recess. that was his message to voters during a town hall last night in san jose. more than 100 people attended the event. khanna says budget issues are frustrating americans everywhere and lawmakers will have 12 days to hammer out a deal before the september 30th deadline. >> we are pushing to make sure the low class and middle class concerns are addressed. khanna says he endorses military cuts, but not aid for ukraine, which he calls a drop in the bucket when it comes to the defense budget. we take a live look out at the golden gate bridge. getting started with your monday

what's ahead. >> we'll give you an idea of what you can expect not only now, but in the day ahead. we're looking to the south bay, 280 at 101, reports of a disabled vehicle, that's at the split, the triangle. at the dublin interchange, a minor crash, no injuries reported off to the right shoulder. an important part of the east bay commute through contra costa county. a little build out of antioch, but pittsburg and bay point we see the most slowing. typical for the morning pattern. we're going to look ahead as well. we're talking about the game, giants playing at 6:45 at oracle park. there will be post work traffic, combined with folks coming into town for the game. that will be a factor for folks on surface street traffic. and combine that with the chase center, sam smith concert tonight. tonight it's in the city at chase center, two events not too

good morning. we should learn which ten prescription drugs will be on the list of drugs the government will pay less for through medicare. it's part of the inflation reduction act passed by congress last year. it should bring down prices for everyone. biden is back from vacation. today they'll pay a visit to a local washington, d.c. school to welcome kids back. later this week, jill biden will travel to the midwest to meet with teachers. she's an educator herself and still works as a teacher. she is the first first lady to work outside the white house. two major court hearings today, both in federal court. one in washington where the judge there may set a date for the federal criminal case against trump over election interference. the other in georgia connected to the state criminal case against trump and his team over election interference. in that hearing, former trump chief of staff mark meadows is asking for his case to be moved from state to federal court,

because when he did what he did, whether it was criminal or not, he said he did so as a federal official. one of the big challenges for the courts is going to be finding enough time to try trump. he's been indicted in two state felony cases, two federal felony cases. there's a major new york state civil case against him and several other civil cases already scheduled. we learned over the weekend that republican candidate vivek ramaswamy is considered an unaffiliated voter in his home state of ohio, not a republican. we knew ramaswamy hadn't voted for anyone or anything until recently, but according to ohio election records, he didn't request a republican ballot during the most recent primary. he's also a big fan of donald trump and says trump was the best president we ever had, which led chuck todd to ask him on "meet the press," if that's the case, why are you running

against him? >> i think i am best positioned to deliver a landslide election in multi-ethic working class majority, and i do think a landslide is what we need in this country, and i'm the only candidate in this race who can deliver that. >> the latest polling in iowa puts ramaswamy tied for tim scott for fourth place, behind nikki haley, ron desantis, and, of course, donald trump. new this morning, a new warning for parents about the dangers of vaping and e-cigarettes. health advocates point out a recent cdc study finds e-cigarette sales surged nearly 50% between 2020 and 2022. experts believe a lot of it has to do with flavored products, specifically targeting minors. one government survey estimates 2.5 million juveniles use e-cigarettes and there's more nicotine being added to vaping products, which health leaders say can be extremely damaging to a young person's development.

from a very warm day before we really start to ramp up these temperatures. as we go into tuesday and wednesday. so by tomorrow we have more 90s showing up on the board from santa rosa, into concord, even into parts of san jose. south san jose could be warming up, especially as we go into wednesday. this is going to be our warmest day of the week, also our driest day of the week. so be mindful of any of that lawnmower work out there that could potentially spark wildfire concerns. better cooling, though, as we go into thursday and into the weekend. we should see things starting to cool off, the wind will, again, be coming off of the pacific, so that should help cool things down. overall, just better weekend weather. we have gone from a walk pace down to crawl. we're looking toward a smooth flow of traffic. it is moving, at least, and that is the good news. we have the build right on pace,
