we're going to get a look at the commute in just a bit, but cinthia has a look at what we can expect in the forecast. >> i've got good news, the warm temperatures are going to continue, still feeling like summer around here, and we're only going to continue to warm up as we go through the rest of the early parts of this week. good morning to you. along the peninsula, san mateo getting ready to head out the door to school or to work, make sure that you're packing that water bottle and that sunscreen. it's going to be a nice, sunny day by the time you get to take that lunch break. around the bay area, we're in for a warm day, slightly warmer than we saw yesterday, some 70s and 80s around the immediate bay. 81 in mountain view. we'll get into the 90s as we go into the valleys, 93 in concord, 90 in livermore and low 90s continue through the santa clara valley. i'll guide you through the warm-up. mike is going to guide you through where you can avoid this crash in the east bay. >> the big view, i'll show you there's nothing major or unexpected as far as the speed

sensor flows. here they're starting to slow north 238, the castro valley y. there is a crash just past that. it should be on the shoulder but there's one car on the right, one on the left, and that may impede the clearing of this. we'll watch for that. more volume south from san lorenzo toward hayward. the build at the bay bridge toll plaza continues. we're filled at all lanes. happy monday. 6:01 right now. one person is dead after being struck by a car while walking in lanes on an east bay freeway. it happened a little month midnight on interstate 580 near grand avenue in oakland. the chp says the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating. investigators would still like to talk with anyone who may have seen anything. police this morning still nowhere near sorting out what led to the chaos that unfolded yesterday at a popular east bay

mall. it involved hundreds of minors and led to massive evacuations. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell joins us from the newsroom. it sounds like it could have been a lot worse. how frightening. >> reporter: correct. good morning to you. as you mentioned, one of those people did bring a gun. this is cell phone video that captures the sound of it. at least one gunshot at the bay street mall in emeryville. you see people running away as a result. police confirmed that someone did fire a gun. no one was hurt, fortunately. officers did evacuate the mall and a nearby amc theatre. memoriville police say a business called 911 yesterday afternoon to report about 50 young adults who were causing a disturbance. officers escorted those people out. then about 45 minutes later, police say another group of around 100 young adults arrived at the mall, followed by another 100. that's when the fights broke out at the mall courtyard.

police had to call in other agencies to help break these up. >> we were grocery shopping and then we were very surprised that a lot of the police and cops were there. we were very surprised because we thought it is a very safe place, so actually we moved in last week. >> reporter: later in the evening, one person, a juvenile, was stabbed, taken to the hospital, expected to be okay. the city confirms at least one person was arrested. police want anyone who witnessed the fights to get in touch with them. we're talking about emeryville police. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. happening now in fairfield, police are asking for your help to find a woman last seen eight days ago, and the man they say was living with her. 36-year-old erica brown disappeared from her home last sunday in fairfield, in a case that police are calling suspicious. they say this man, her boyfriend, mark randle, was living at the home and also

cannot be found. they're calling him a person of interest. randle was last seen driving a four-door black mercedes sedan from the early 2000s. florida investigators say the shooter in that racially motivated rampage at a tlar general store purchased his weapons legally. three innocent people died before that shooter, a 21-year-old white man, killed himself saturday in jacksonville as police rushed in. authorities say that he had no criminal record, no red flags that would have stopped him from being able to purchase his guns. he also left no doubt about his intentions in a hate-filled manifesto. >> portions of these manifestos detail the shooter's disgusting ideology of hate, plainly put, the shooting was racially motivated and he hated black people. >> meanwhile, a north texas man this weekend built crosses for those victims, setting them up just a few blocks from the scene of the shooting. over the past few years he's built crosses for victims of violence in ukraine and uvalde.

he says that he does it with hopes of helping others heal from tragedy. last night president biden spoke with the mayor and sheriff of jacksonville, offering his full support. 6:05. to decision 2024 and two court hearings today may end up having a major impact not only on the presidential race but the criminal cases against former president donald trump. mark meadows, trump's former chief of staff, is due in a georgia courtroom. he is one of the 19 people accused of trying to overturn georgia's 2020 election results. but he's pushing to turn this into a federal case instead of a state case, which would mean a far wider jury poll. prosecutors would lose the chance to try him, potentially impacting trump's case. in washington, d.c. a potential trial date may be set on federal charges tied to the january 6th probe. despite all of trump's legal troubles, he's still the leading gob presidential candidate, which his opponents believe will

eventually catch up to him. >> i don't know if it's four or five or six or how many indictments now, but he's going to spend a lot of time in a courtroom and not on a campaign trail. >> i remain more confident after wednesday night that the republican nominee will not be the former president. >> some analysts argue trump is using his legal issues to his advantage, after the release of his booking photo last week he used it to fundraise over $7 million. >> trump has a few tentative court dates on tap, one tied to the georgia election case scheduled for october 23rd, then one in january for federal charges for the january 6th case, and in march trump has court dates scheduled in new york for the hush money case died to adult film star stormy daniels. in may trump has a date set for the florida classified document case. new at 6:00, san francisco teachers plan to release a report today tied to what they call the fiscal mismanagement of

city schools. the district admits it's reaching what it calls a fiscal cliff and it comes as leaders consider multiple school closures, which they're planning to debate in detail at tomorrow's school board meeting. also on the agenda, the teacher shortage and low school enrollment numbers. the union today plans to respond with its own roadmap to financial recovery, the district emphasizing that no decision will be made tomorrow to close any of those schools. let's take a live look outside overlooking san jose and oakland. sun is up. this morning a smoke advisory continues due to the big fires near california's oregon border. >> forecaster cinthia pimentel is here with details. we will feel the effect at some point today. >> especially for today, i think mostly near the north bay coast, but then it should start to impact everybody because of the way that the winds are moving around us. let's go out and take a look at what we can expect with the categories today. we'll do moderate from the north bay to the coast and the bay, as

well as the santa clara valley, santa cruz, the central coast also seeing this movement of the poor air quality. as we start to track it on our graphic, we'll see around the mendocino coastline, marin county, seeing a little more unhealthy, while the rest of us continue to see hazy sunshine. the winds are moving off of the pacific and that will continue to usher in the wildfire smoke from the pacific northwest. it's very hazardous and as we go into tuesday and wednesday with these winds starting to come a little more offshore, we'll see some of the smoke start to impact through the sacramento valley, coming a little closer to the bay area. mike is helping you get out the door with some cheaper gas prices. >> helping you stay moving in the case of gas. south bay leads the chart again. the costco on lawrence station

there's the big jobs report at the end of the week, all eyes on china. the government there asking chinese mutual funds to take a break from selling stock from their portfolios. that's a bad sign. our commerce secretary is in china, gina raimondo, who met with china's minister of commerce, part of efforts to deepen communication between the u.s. and the peoples republic of china, even as we continue to cut china off from american high-tech. the interest on student loans resumes on friday, payments resume in october. this, after a three-year break because of covid. as you'll remember, the biden administration lost its case in the supreme court and promised the republicans it would start making americans pay back their student loans as part of the deal to keep the government open and raise the debt ceiling. now, the resumption of student loans is going to be tough on the millions of americans who have to start writing checks again, but it's also going to be likely difficult on small

businesses. restaurants, nail salons, anything where people were spending money they don't have now. hundreds of dollars a month. now, the good news, it will likely help fight inflation. less money in americans' pockets means less money into the economy, and that's always disinflationary. the biden administration will announce the name of the first ten drugs medicare will offer to pay less money for, part of the inflation reduction act passed by congress last year. likely names you've heard on tv commercials or maybe you take jardiance and xiralto. >> we hear them a lot in the morning. >> we do. >> it's funny, because sometimes we only hear the tune and we start to sing it. what is that for? thank you, scott. well, new at 6:00 this morning, scientists have found the world's largest octopus hot spot just off the central coast.

scientists from the monterey bay aquarium research institute and moss landing marine labs took dives off the coast to the sea floor and found thousands of octopi and now believe this is the largest octopus habitat in the world. they're calling it the octopus garden. divers counted about 6,000 creatures out there, but they believe that there are more than 20,000 more in that same area. now, that study published in the science advances suggests that the warm water off the central coast is ideal for their eggs. >> that is begging for us to play ringo starr's "octopus gardens". >> i don't know it. >> we'll catch you up on the beetles. trending this morning, a competition where men sweep

>> you better ask our husbands, first. >> no, thanks. you know, it could be eventually a day for the pool, making a splash like those people. temperatures are going to warm up again. how about we start with a check in the north bay. mostly clear in santa rosa. by the lunchtime hour, plenty of sunshine, feeling that warmth in the 80s. a lot of us will be in the 80s through novato, oakland, hayward, fremont. overall, a nice, warm day. mild in san francisco. then it will be hot and our microclimates will start to show as we go into martinez, livermore 90 degrees. we'll see upper 80s through los gatos and the low 90s continue through the south county. as we mix with the hazy sunshine, the winds will carry through 30 mile an hour winds through bodega bay, the delta should see a breezy afternoon.

little relief will be in the overnight hours through tuesday and wednesday. tuesday, more 90s start to pop up on the board from novato into livermore, down through morgan hill. very warm at the beaches. wednesday will be our hottest day of the week, so prepare for those summer-like temperatures now. make sure that you have all your water, your sunscreen, your hats. don't put them away just yet because we could be looking at triple-digit heat from concord into fairfield. san jose, 90 degrees downtown and upper 90s from morgan hill to gilroy. the winds will shift on wednesday, a little bit of a concern here early wednesday morning through the north bay mountains. look at how the wind takes a north-northwest shift, so more offshore, not only a concern for wildfires, but also a concern for our health where we don't get some of that overnight relief to help cool our bodies down. we'll continue to watch that. we're going to be on a little bit of a roller coaster ride going from very hot to cooling down very quickly thursday, on

into the weekend, as a system of low pressure drops, possibly bringing in showers for the northern parts of the state, even through the sierra. so just a little bit of everything as we wrap up august and get ready for september. looking at our seven-day forecast, hazy sunshine today, should start to get better on tuesday, and then we'll just see hot temperatures for wednesday, cooling it down about 5 degrees for thursday and way cooler temperatures, more of that breeze and relief thursday into the weekend, back into the 80s. san francisco, very mild there, we're going to lose some of that wind tuesday and wednesday. but then it will become more breezy. definitely into friday, cooling things down, becoming more cloudy. overall, just prepare for the heat and make sure you're keeping hydrated and taking care of yourself if you're sensitive to the heat. let's see where those sensors are picking up a slow spot with mike. we typically see this backup. for those just joining us, not a

surprise at the bay bridge. for those who have been with us for the last half hour, things have slowed down. what happened was there was a series of flashing lights and an incident past the toll plaza, and then it rippled across. things are recovering and we don't see a lot of backup down the eastshore freeway. so that indicates a smoother flow of traffic. it's building for highway 37, at the richmond bridge and through concord and pittsburg. highway 4, we see the slowing north 237. the update is the direction is southbound with the original crash near 14th. and then there's another crash just off of 880. they're both counter-commute and we don't see slowing, they're on the shoulder. southbound 880, builds toward hayward, south past the san mateo bridge, dumbarton, and into the south bay where the first slowing has cleared up for the northbound stretch of 101. no problem for the try valley.

investigator chris chmura's team has some advice and a warning. >> we heard from some folks in the east bay that some pest control companies are going door to door saying there's an insect infestation, so you should hire them. let's do two things, check that claim, and help you hire the right pro. first, about that alleged bug bounceback, we asked san jose state entomology expert, and he said the pest population appears to be normal right now. still, he said you might find insects are eager to get inside your home because it's so dry outside and they want to find water. if you decide to hire a pest control company, know this, california licenses pest control people. they should be able to show you a license card like this, because applying pesticide the wrong way has consequences. >> it can be anywhere from an ineffective treatment to hazards to the environment, pets, animals, children, anything could be harmed.

upper 70s up and down the peninsula. we're going to see a very nice day around the bay area with some 70s and 80s, and then warming up into the valleys. triple-digit heat as we go into wednesday. as fast as we warm up, that's as fast as we will cool down into the weekend. i'll talk about that in the full forecast in just a little bit. back to you. >> thank you so much. a los gatos mother accused of hosting alcohol-fueled parties for minors is set to appear in court this morning, and she was a no-show the last time she was supposed to appear. kris sanchez is live outside of the courthouse. her no-show, just the latest twist in an unusual case here. >> reporter: right. so she did not appear at her last hearing because of a skin infection, and this is what she tells the nbc bay area investigative unit, she said that she was not there because she has wounds packed full of gauze in two locations. she did add, though, that she's been waiting two years for this

moment, i don't want this postponed, i want to move forward. this is shannon o'connor at a previous hearing and she claims the skin infection is from bed bug bites she got while she was in custody at the correctional facility. that was corroborated by other nbc bay area sources, however a santa clara county sheriff's deputy told us there are no signs of bed bugs in o'connor's unit. our investigative unit confirmed that o'connor was hospitalized back in october as well after she was assaulted by five other inmates and suffered a head injury, a concussion and a broken nose. o'connor has been in custody since her arrest in october of 2021. the district attorney's office claims that for eight months o'connor provided enough alcohol for her 14-year-old son and his friends to get drunk, then encouraged sexual activity among them, and with some girls, some of which she watched. now, she is also accused of sexual battery and faces 39 charges in all. the judge in the case will review o'connor's medical record

to see when this case can move forward. we do know there's a hearing and that courtroom opens up at 9:00 this morning. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> one to follow. kris, thank you. happening today, a south bay man accused of selling and storing about a half a ton of illegal fireworks is expected in court for a plea hearing. in early july, san jose police arrested 49-year-old mark espinoza. they say as far as seized 1,000 pounds of fireworks inside his milpitas storage unit. he's accused of distributing them through the bay area. espinoza is being held on $1 million bail. happening now, authorities in the north bay are looking for the driver in a deadly hit-and-run. the chp wants you to look at this suv. ther trying to locate the woman they say was driving it. the hit-and-run happened at around 7:30 yesterday morning in santa rosa. police believe the car has major

damage to the right front of its hood, grill, bumper, and headlight. 6:34. all talk, no action. that's what housing rights activists are saying about leaders on the peninsula who they believe are delaying action on one of the city's worsening housing crises. >> today they're ready to move forward with change. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab joins us in studio. this is one struggle to make it in the bay that includes some big allegations. >> reporter: that's right, laura and marcus. big allegations from one group toward the city council that says they are making substantial efforts, but the painful reality is the housing crisis is broad and systemic. now, it has been over a year since redwood city adopted an initial strategy to address anti-displacement, but that is not enough. according to housing rights advocates, they say there hasn't been an ordinance passed. among the groups fighting for change is faith in action bay area. they have released a list of solutions they say will address housing issues in redwood city.

there's quite a list of concerns. they include a harassment and discrimination, loophole evictions through renovations, and rental rights that are not being upheld, especially for low-income and working-class residents following the pandemic. >> there is a real crisis of families who are being unjustly evicted from their homes, families that are unable to pay rent and are experiencing harassment from their landlords, and these ordinances are really essential to keeping families in their homes and preventing displacement in our community. >> reporter: advocates assert immigrant leaders have presented the council with ideas and possible solutions. among those proposals, local just cause for evictions that goes beyond state law, and the creation of a central office as an encompassing resource. as of april, the city has reportedly began investing in the creation of a central resource office. also in the adoption of redwood city's anti-displacement

policies, city leaders commit to goals of, quote, implementing housing policies more effectively to meet the unique housing needs of people at all income levels. the city council meets at 7:00 p.m. today. faith in action bay area plans to hold a rally at 5:30 and will later join the meeting to make their public comments. back to you. >> thank you so much. happening right now for you, tropical storm idalia is expected to reach hurricane strength today as it barrels toward the florida coast. residents in the western part of the state, including the city of fort myers, are preparing. many are still recovering from hurricane ian last year. idalia may be packed with life-threatening storm surge, hurricane force winds, as well as rainfall that could lead to some flooding in some of those areas as soon as tomorrow. forecaster cinthia pimentel has been following. >> right now it's hanging on as a tropical storm near the

yucatan peninsula, impacting cuba. as it moves into the warmer waters, i think by this afternoon category 1 hurricane. as it comes closer to florida, we've been telling you about how these waters off of the coast there are around 100 degrees. that is what makes up a recipe for hurricanes. you need very warm water, upwards of 80 degrees, you need winds. as we go into tuesday, it will be intensifying into a category 2 storm. i think it might make landfall in florida along the panhandle as a category 3. aside from the categories, we really want people to call up their loved ones, making sure they're prepared. most people from hurricanes don't tend to pass away from the winds and the hurricane itself, it's the deadly storm surge that we're watching that could be upwards of 11 feet. so we're going to continue to see and track all of these impacts from idalia that is expected to intensify as early

as today, and i'll bring you the latest, of course, as we get closer to that event tomorrow and on wednesday. for now, i'm going to send it over to mike. what's going on on the san mateo bridge? >> i've got to be honest, i'm not sure. we have this jam here, in just a couple of minutes i saw no traffic going up the high-rise. i did see flashing lights on the right side. i believe there was a disabled vehicle that had to be cleared and may be clearing right now across the san mateo bridge. traffic is moving. it was stopped for a couple of minutes. it's been slow for about ten. that's why we have the buildup coming down out of hayward and toward the san mateo area. meanwhile, if you're south of the san mateo bridge, the dumbarton bridge is the road to take. westbound 84 over the water is less travelled. highway 4, 37 holding, standard with the slowing. we see a build for richmond toward san rafael and through richmond for westbound 80. no big surprises for contra costa county.

we'll see what else is showing coming up. happening today, a southern california father accused of driving his family's car over a cliff in january is due in court. no one was seriously injured. inside the car was the driver, as well as his wife and two children. the suspect, pasadena doctor, is facing attempted murder and child abuse charges. today in court, that judge is expected to hear the district attorney's motion for a psychiatric evaluation. well, the bidens are back in washington, d.c. after a vacation at lake tahoe. >> we expect the white house to make an announcement on prescription drugs. >> probably as soon as tomorrow. we should learn which ten prescription drugs will be on the list the government will pay less for, part of the inflation reduction act passed by congress last year. that should bring prices for those prescriptions down for everybody. bidens are back from vacation. today they'll pay a visit to a local washington, d.c. school to welcome the kids back.

later this week, jill biden will travel to the midwest to meet the teachers. she's an educator herself. she still works as a teacher. she is the first first lady to work outside the white house. two major court hearings today, both in federal court, one in washington where the judge there may set a date for the federal criminal case against trump over election interference. the other in georgia, connected to the state criminal case against trump and his team over election interference. in that hearing, former trump chief of staff, mark meadows, is asking for his case to be moved to federal court, because when he did what he did, whether it's criminal or not, he did so, he says, as a federal official, and thus his lawyers say it belongs in federal court. as we've said before, one of the big challenges for the court is going to be finding enough time to try trump. he's been indicted on two state felony cases, two federal felony

cases. a major new york state civil case still against him and several other civil cases are already scheduled. we learned over the weekend that republican candidate vivek ramaswamy is considered an unaffiliated voter in his home state of ohio. we knew ramaswamy hadn't voted for anyone or anything until recently. according to ohio election records, he did not request a republican ballot during the most recent primary. he's a big fan of donald trump. he says trump was the best president we've ever had, which led chuck todd to ask him on "meet the press," if that's the case, why are you running against him? >> i think i'm best positioned to deliver a landslide election in -- i'm the only candidate who can deliver that. >> the latest polling puts

some hazy sunshine as we continue to track hazy skies, the wildfire smoke from the pacific northwest, going to usher into the bay area. i think by tonight into tomorrow, the way that the winds are moving might come closer to the north bay, just a little bit tracking over calistoga and into the sacramento valley. if you are sensitive to these kinds of conditions, make sure that you are aware and also maybe keeping it indoors with the air-conditioning turned on. we will need it as we go into tomorrow. we're seeing more 90s pop up on the board. 91 in novato, 71 in half moon bay. you see our microclimates, but it's going to be breezy toward the coastline as people try to beat the heat over the next couple of days. wednesday is the hottest day of the week, so make sure you're carrying that sunscreen, maybe an umbrella to keep those harsh rays away from you. as we go into the inland valleys, we're going to see triple-digit heat in concord,

fairfield, livermore 95 degrees. we'll also 90 in downtown san jose, and those upper 90s will continue through the south county, while the peninsula and into san francisco might break a record. we'll keep an eye if we do hit the 80-degree mark. as quickly as we warm up, we will cool down. we see a low pressure system that will drop in from the pacific northwest that will bring in more of that overnight relief so we get to bed nice and comfortable. more cloud cover and possibly even some rain through the northern parts of the state. it's very interesting to see this light up in our rain estimate right now. not only would this be a rare event, but also that could help clear some of the wildfire smoke, giving people a well-deserved break. how about we sum it up for you in our seven-day forecast? 90s, going to upper 90s, possibly triple-digits in some of the deeper valleys.

we'll hold steady in the 80s as we look toward the holiday next week, and san francisco will see mild temperatures, 70s, upper 70s, and then cooling down to the 60s by friday. what's going on that's got your attention? >> it's building and we're seeing slower drives as we would expect at the richmond side of the bridge to san rafael. san rafael moves slowly, 101. you see the build heading toward the eastshore freeway and on the eastshore freeway as well. berkeley, out of contra costa county, slowing in typical spots. highway 4 really starting to bog down into pittsburg and bay point. concord sees slowing on 242. we're showing a smooth drive despite a minor crash off the dublin grade and still slow but recovery for the san mateo bridge. whatever the disabled vehicle was going on in the westbound direction, that did clear and we have recovery as we see build off the nimitz. in the south bay, typical

welcome back. we are moving you forward this morning with a look at the top stories here on "today in the bay," starting with that deadly accident on an east bay freeway. >> one person was killed after being struck by a car while walking in lanes. it happened on interstate 580 near grand avenue in oakland. the chp says the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating. investigators would like to talk with anyone who may have seen anything. police in emeryville are trying to sort out what led to

absolute chaos yesterday at the popular bay street mall. new video showing some of the frenzy which sent a lot of people running for cover and led to shoppers being evacuated. police say one person was stabbed and suffered minor injuries, and witnesses say there was at least one gunshot. now, police say there were several fights involving hundreds of juveniles, at least one person was taken into custody. the so-called south bay party mom accused of throwing alcohol-fueled parties for minors is due back in court this morning. shannon o'connor has been held without bail ever since authorities arrested her nearly two years ago. prosecutors say she hosted parties for underage teenagers, gave them alcohol and encouraged them to have sex. last week she missed her court date due to what she tells our investigative unit was a skin infection from bed bugs at elmwood correctional facility. the santa clara county sheriff's deputies later told us there are no signs of bed bugs in o'connor's unit. o'connor insists she does not

want her trial postponed. san francisco teachers plan to release a report due to what they call the fiscal mismanagement of city schools. the district admits its reaching what it calls a fiscal cliff and comes as leaders consider multiple school closures which they're planning to debate tomorrow during a school board meeting. the union plans to respond with its own map to financial recovery. the district is emphasizing that no decision will be made tomorrow on those school closings. a look at the forecast this morning, beautiful start. >> it is. we're going to be in for a warm-up as we go from today, tomorrow, hottest day is wednesday. but then we will drop down, with more cloud cover, more winds as we go into friday and the weekend. our labor day also looks to be staying in the 80s right now. we have your typical build in the south bay, combining with a backup that's forming because of a car fire. no injuries reported north 101,
