today, monday, august 28th, 2023. breaking news, florida on edge, tropical storm idalia is rapidly picking up strength as it closes in on sunshine state, set to make landfall as major hurricane. we're tracking when and where. behind the ram page new details are emerging following that deadly shooting in jacksonville, florida, how the community is remembering the lives lost. flying under the radar, could you have been on a flight where the pilot concealed serious health issues the thousands suspected of doing just that. and marching on. today marks 60 years since dr. martin luther king jr. dared americans to dream of a better future. how his family is trying to keep that dream alive. it's so good to be with you today. >> nice to be back. >> welcome back. a college student now. >> i have a college student now

and i had a little bit of rest relaxation. we'll begin with that breaking news this hour, major storm developing right now forecast to hit florida as a dangerous hire cane on wednesday, at this hour idalia is a tropical storm off the coast of cuba, it's intensifying rapidly, flood alerts and evacuation orders along the gulf coast of florida. >> if the storm hits at high tide there could be a storm surge of up to 11 feet in some areas. let's begin this hour with nbc meteorologist bill karins and marissa parra. bill, time out the next 24 to 48 hours. >> reporter: we'll see a tropical storm going into a hurricane and major hurricane in 40 hours of time, developing rapidly and we're trying to get the word out in western florida to get out of the way, especially people who are in rvs or mobile homes or low-level areas with houses with one level

in them because that's the issue. by the time we get towards landfall, 120, 125, getting very serious, the storm will likely undergo rapid intensification during the day tuesday. notice tampa is on the south side on this, tallahassee is on the west. our computer models are in line of those two. the big bend area of florida, this is a very swathy low-lying area, probably the least populated area of all of florida, a major hurricane with doing the lease amount of damage that's where you would it want to likely hit. any slight shift will make a huge difference especially with storm surge the west coast of florida is shallow the waters's going to pile up, 7 to 11 feet to the right of center, tampa could get 4 to 7 feet and a lot

of rain issues from florida through the carolinas all day wednesday and thursday morning. >> bill, thank you. marissa, how are people and state officials preparing in florida for what's coming. >> reporter: yes, officials are really communicating exactly what we just heard bill saying is that they should be prepared for this to get a lot worse than we're seeing. people in florida, when you hear a tropical storm you shrug your shoulders but we're expecting this to get a lot more intense. hurricane ian that developed rapidly. officials are saying please take this seriously, they've issued evacuation orders in some areas. they're issuing mandatory orders for people in those low-lying areas along the coast and in those mobile home areas, what you'll see over my shoulders, both sides here, people picking up sandbags, because they're getting ready to evacuate so

they're trying to prep their home and some people are preparing to weather this storm from inside this home. are you going to stay put or evacuate? >> i'm going to stay put. i hope i never have to leave my home. >> we're going to tough it out. i'm so grateful. we were able to come and get this sand. i am. i really am. >> reporter: so we've already seen schools closures across the area, we're seeing cities announcing that different city offerings will also be closed. what we're seeing across the board is they're hoping for the best -- we're following breaking news out of north carolina, police responding to a report of an armed and dangerous person on or near the campus of the university of north carolina. >> this is some video coming in from our affiliate wrl down

there, we don't have a lot of details but the university sent out an alert telling people to shelter in place until further notice. >> right now, police have released this photo of someone they say is a person of interest. unc police say anyone who sees him should keep their distance. we're monitoring this developing situation and we'll bring you updates as we have them. meantime, a deadly shooting in jacksonville, florida. >> three people were killed when a white shooter who police said was targeting black people opened fire at a dollar general store the fbi is now investigating the attack as a hate crime. george, our hearts go out to these families. the youngest victims, 19 years old. what more are we learning about the people who were killed and how is the community doing? >> reporter: this community is

hurting. a fence was put up here outside the dollar general, they're trying to keep people out of it. the last car was literally moved this morning, that police crime scene still active to a degree as they put up this fence, you mentioned the community, a vigil here yesterday. taken aback by the show of love and support, they weren't going to resort to unrest, they wanted to show the world they would come together. angela carr, an uber driver, a.j., an employee here at the dollar geral, last but not least jerrald gallon. they're devastated by this loss. more of my conversation with him. >> he didn't deserve this at

all. he worked and took care of his kids. he didn't deserve it. i really hurt for his mother. trying to do the best i can to stay up for him and his family and look out for his little girl. >> reporter: another vigil is planned today to remember more of the victims, but again, the healing here just starting. >> george, we always hesitate to too much about the shooter, we don't want to glorify this horrific violence, we're learning about the weapons, an ar-15-style rifle, we know he was receiving mental health treatment at one point as teenager. police said he was able to purchase these weapons legally? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. according to the sheriff here these weapons were purchased legally. he's a man in his 20s, 21-year-old, living with his parents in clay county, florida,

he left behind racist writings. we know that there was a domestic violence call something to do with the shooter's brother and you mentioned that mental health evaluation, known as the baker act, but again the sheriff saying these weapons were purchased legally. the sheriff also saying it's really hard for this community to make sense of this shooting, the people here just united here in this hatred. >> this kind of violence is senseless. we're following several developments today in the election interference cases involving former president donald trump. >> a federal judge in d.c. has set a trial date for march 4th,,2024. as for the former president his

arraignment in georgia is set for september 6th at 9:00 a.m. eastern. one week from wednesday. >> ryan is in washington for us and blayne alexander is in georgia. march 2024 is just two months later than the start date that prosecutors had been asking for, take us through the judge's decision. >> the special pros counsel's office is pretty happen with it. it gives more time than they would have if they set this trial for december, for jury selection. he needed 2.5 years to get through this evidence, she set aside this notion that a person would have to look through the millions of pages of ed presented in this trial and agreed with the prosecutor's office in that argument that a

lot of this had already been available to the former president. they didn't need that much time they were claiming that they did and the judge decided that march 4th would be a significant amount of time for the trump team to bet prepared. >> blayne, remind our viewers why mark meadows wants to move his case to federal court and how did the judge in georgia react to that in. >> reporter: the reason that he's arguing that he has grounds to move it because he said he was acting in capacity as white house chief of staff in a federal position. the judge appeared to agree on face, that's why we're having a hearing today, to lay out the evidence, so we know that mark meadows in the past ten minutes or so just wrapped up his testimony, he had been on the stand for better part of five hours throughout the day, a lot of it was answering questions about what his duties entald as

just weeks after that devastating fire in lahaina, a brush fire in maui forced some evacuations over the weekend. the fire burned close to a number of homes but was brought under control and people returned home after a few hours, just a few miles though from the area where fires earlier this month killed at least 11 people. steve patterson joins us now from hawaii, steve the fire is out but still a very scary situation for people who live there for sure. what do we know about the sirens that went off? >> reporter: this fire in total was ten acres out in a matter of hours, it caused no damages, it caused no injuries, but i've

been talking to families on the ground who have children, who see the morning myself and equate that with the fire, see the sun in the sky and equate that with fire the trauma here is real and this of course didn't help, it was a very scary situation just a few miles north of lahaina in area that burned very close to homes maybe 15, 20 feet away, it spawned those sirens. it happened while a woman was being interviewed about the property that was just lost. listen to this. >> your business is gone, so -- hi. i've got to go. i have staff members that need to be evacuated. i must go and evacuate more staff right now. thank you so much. >> reporter: unreal there, the sirens did go off, notable because they did not go off during the fire that destroyed

the town of lahaina and it may lend some credence to the fact that they're more vigilant about sounding those sirens. kate. >> all right, steve in hawaii for a long time, keep up the great reporting, steve, thank you. close to 400 people are still unaccounted for after those deadly fires on maui for their family members the desperate search for answers is just the first step in a long grieving process. steven romo spoke to one survivor who lost four loved ones. >> reporter: the grief is still fresh for holly. >> some days i wake up and i forget. it's hard to accept it all again. >> reporter: her parents died in the hawaiian wild fire as they tried to escape the flames. >> they left at the same time.

>> they left at the same time, but only one of the cars made it out. >> reporter: holly's brother was in a car ahead of them but the smoke was so thick they got separated. >> we kind of spent the day like looking for my parents, like he -- i went to all the shelters and the hospitals. >> reporter: her brother eventually going back to lahaina, only to find their remains in that burned out car. >> i remember just hanging up because i could hear his voice cracking. >> reporter: the aftermath is keeps them from setting the funerals. >> when you don't have the remains, we don't want to have to push the date back. >> reporter: like so many picking up the pieces, holly's dealing with a great deal of trauma. >> one of the only pictures i took, you can see the smoke getting thicker on the side. >> reporter: living day by day, not sure what the future will hold. >> i think everything all at

[ laughter ] why is that funny? happy monday, this is the fast-forward on nbc news daily. the mom accused of hosting drunken sex parties for her young teenage son and his friends is in the hospital today. we are in county court with an update. >> reporter: -- was ordered back to court in san jose november 6 four a preliminary hearing in which the court will decide if there was enough evidence to go to trial on the 39 charges. this is a preliminary hearing that was already supposed to happen but, o'connor was hospitalized and thus there was a delay. she told us quote, i have wounds packed full of gauze in two locations.

and added i have been waiting two years for this moment i do not want this postponed, i want to move forward. she told us she has lumps getting infected. when we asked the sheriffs office about her condition, they told us there are no signs of bedbugs in her unit at elmwood correctional facility. our investigative unit also confirmed she was hospitalized back in october after she was assaulted by five other inmates and severed head injury, concussion and broken nose. she has been in custody since she was arrested out of state in 2021. the district attorney claims that for eight months, starting in 2020, o'connor provided enough alcohol for her than 14- year-old son and his friends to get drunk and encouraged sexual activity among different group, some of which she watched. she is also accused of sexual battery. in all, there are 39 charges against her. she will be back in court

november 6. thank you. here is some other stories we are following. control teams are targeting a basic test in the south bay. a man accused of selling illegal fireworks is in court but first, authorities in north bay are looking for the driver of a deadly it and run. look at this suv, they are trying to locate the woman they say was driving it. the hit and run happened around 7:30 yesterday morning on river road in forced fell. police believe the car has major damage to the right front of its hood, grill, bumper and headlight. a southbay man accused of selling and storing about half a ton of illegal fireworks is expected in court. police arrested the 49-year-old man back in july. officers seized 1000 pounds from his storage unit. he is accused of distributing the fireworks throughout the bay area. he is being held on $1 million

bail. the new threat in the south bay, oriental fruit flies. control teams will spray in santa clara over the next few days. the pests pose a significant threat to the environment and agriculture across the state. in the coming areas, teams will move to other areas where the flies have been spotted. we are expecting hazy skies because of the fires in the pacific northwest. >> happy monday. aside from the warm temperatures you might be feeling already, looking chord this guy could be -- the way that the wind is ushering in the bay area is bringing along hazy conditions along the bay. we will see that stick around possibly into tomorrow too. looking at the north bay as one of those areas where the smoke seems to be concentrated into the sacramento valley area.

previously argued that he could not be held accountable for his son's attack but prosecutors say he's responsible because he signed the firearm identify case application, indicted only seven counts on reckless conduct. the trial is set to begin november 6th. tesla is facing two trials involving its autopilot feature, the first lawsuit scheduled for mid-september, that caused a 2019 crash where the car suddenly veered off the highway and crashed into a palm tree east of los angeles, one person was killed. the second trial set for early october alleges autopilot failed to brake, steer or avoid a collision that killed a man north of miami, that crash also happened in 2019, tesla has denied liability for both accidents and blamed driver error, the company said autopilot is safe when drivers pay attention. singer elton john is reportedly at home and in good

health after spending the night in the hospital. john was hospitalized with minor injuries after slipping and falling at his house last night in south of france. the 76-year-old has been suspending time there with his husband and two children. in australia, investigators are working to figure out what went wrong during a military training mission that led to the deaths of three u.s. marines, this happened on sunday, several other service members were injured. involved troops from multiple countries and new questions today about the aircraft that crashed. called an osprey. not the first time that troops have been killed or injured in an accident involving one of those. courtney joins us now. courtney where does the investigation stand today? >> reporter: ongoing. it's still pretty early stages of the investigation. we're not likely to know a real final cause of this crash for some time, kate, you mentioned

that it's had a difficult history, there was an issue over the course of about decade from 2012 into 2022 where osprey has a problem with the clutch, a relatively basic mechanical issue but it was believed to have been tied to a number of crashes. two in 2022 alone. but most of those problems had been fixed over the last year and year and half now. we don't have a good sense of what caused this crash. these ospreys they're called a tilt roor aircraft, they take off, land and they can hover like a helicopter. with those rotors. but when they get up to a certain altitude the rotors can tilt forward and fly like a plane. they are also used primarily by the aircraft the air force as a people mover.

they can carry up to two dozen people at a time. kate. >> courtney kube, thank you. federal officials are investigating nearly 5,000 pilots for allegedly falsifying their medical records. according to the washington post, the pilots are military veterans who failed to report they were also collecting benefits for disabilities. tom costello joins us now. nearly 5,000 pilots is a big number, how much of a risk does this pose to those flying on a commercial airplane every day? >> a minimal risk at best the vast majority of these pilots aren't commercial pilots, they're flying business jets, also flying a cargo flight, they may have tour operator-type licenses, yes the concern here is as faa was double-checking

its list, it had about 5,000 people collecting benefits from the v.a. for disabilities. these are veterans, served mostly in iraq or afghanistan, some disabilities, they're collecting disability benefits from the v.a. but they tell the faa they're perfectly healthy. there's contradiction there, they're required by law to be fully transparent with the faa and in the words of one investigator it's not unreasonable but human nature that people overexaggerate to v.a. >> what has the faa said about this in. >> so, right now, they told 60 pilots they can't fly, period. and their disabilities can range from a serious mental health issue to a serious heart issue for example of the 4800 pilots

investigated half of the cases have been closed and only 600, 600 out of almost 5,000, they're working through this step by step. the faa said we're giving pilots the opportunity to come clean. what's truth and the reality about why you're receiving disability benefits from the v.a. and you need to go through full transparency with us and there are waivers for specific conditions but the faa is also saying we're very mindful that these are veterans many of them were wounded or injured in the line of duty and we owe them a debt of gratitude so the faa is trying to give them that flexibility. >> more to come. tom costello, thanks so much. 60 years ago today, dr. mart yib luther king jr. delivered his most famous speech on the steps of the lincoln memorial. >> because i have a dream.

my four little children will one one day live in a nation will be judged by the content of their character. i have a dream. >> dr. king's i have a dream speech highlighted the march on washington on august 28th, 1963. it was at the height of the civil rights movement and on saturday thousands gathered on our nation's capital to mark the 60th anniversary of that event. joining us now is trymaine lee here in studio and the president of the national civil rights museum in memphis. trymaine, you spoke to one of his children, what are they saying about continuing their father's work. >> he put things into perspective, think about history as a long far away time that dr.

king did all this work but the way he framed it, this work is on a continuum, it started with dr. king but it's incumbent that we carry the torch forward. let's take a listen. >> the clock has been turned back in so many areas, whether it's history of african americans being skewed in a direction that's not accurate. we need the full history and understanding of the impact. something is wrong in this climate right now. and we have to make a dramatic turn so that's why this is not a celebration, this is really about moving forward. >> his father talked about the fierce urgency of now and it sounds like martin luther king iii is picking thaup mantle. >> dr. wiggington, focused on the right to vote, ending racial discrimination, these things are still happening, what have we learned from the past to change

things going forward. >> that's absolutely correct. there's still a call for urgency at this particular moment. 60 years ago when draft king made that speech it was a galvanizing moment and it was inspiring to so many people. but the work has trickled over that last 60 years, while we have had some important legislation that came at the next year or two, the actual work that needs to be done has come to a modest amount and it's also important that 55 years ago we remember that dr. king was assassinated on the balcony of the motel where we now house the national civil rights museum. >> work continues. trymaine, it strikes me that this work spans generations,

talking about the march just last week and our floor director's father was actually at the march back in 1963, we have a kind of cool photo right there on the right is joel and on the very same spot where his father was on the left 60 years ago. of course his story isn't an anomaly, on saturday so many others shared that continuity, what did they tell you about passing the torch to the next generation. >> these are the deep contradictions, we lament the work unfinished op the other hand this weekend seeing the people of all generations older and younger coming together and the older folks having that duality, it's amazing that we're able to pass the torch to a new generation whose hungry for freedom but sad that so much work needs to be done. folks leaning on the elders i know the job is unfinished we're
