also, tracking idalia, which reached hurricane strength a short time ago. we're tracking its path and the impact already being felt in parts of florida. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you on this tuesday. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we'll check in with mike for a look at the morning commute, but forecaster cinthia pimentel is in for kari tracking what we can expect. there are a lot of things to talk about. we'll start with right here and right now. a clearer picture over san francisco, not noticing that fog making its way through the city. 57 degrees. a beautiful start in downtown san jose, 60 degrees to kick off our tuesday morning. the warmest day is expected tomorrow, but today will feel warm out there, 70s and 80s along the bay, to some upper 90s in parts of solano county. through solano county there is a

little bit of fire weather concerns we'll be tracking over the next couple of hours, tonight into wednesday, and of course we'll talk about idalia. stay tuned. there's lots to cover on the weather front. we will go to mike. >> we're looking at 680, the split, 24, just off of the screen. very light traffic. the speed sensors are smooth off the benicia bridge and concord into walnut creek. highway 4, nice speeds, same for 37. those are the first areas we'll see slowing as the commute builds. good stuff. out of the altamont pass, very mild slowing. chp reported gusts of winds there, and also reporting it across the benicia bridge. no sustained problems or issues related to that. south bay and along the peninsula, a nice, easy drive. same thing for the san mateo and dumbarton bridges. back to you. >> thanks, mike. first this morning, breaking news to tell you about out of

san francisco. this is where police have been involved in a shooting in the tenderloin. this is video from citizen app showing the aftermath. it happened around 10:30 last night on jones street. police say a man armed with a knife was threatening people and officers fired when he ignored orders to drop the weapon. the suspect suffered life-threatening injuries. bob redell is following this investigation. he's going to have a live report in about 30 minutes. the fate of some san francisco schools may hang in the balance today as district leaders introduce a possible plan to close campuses. teachers and community members argue the district needs to take a better look at how it's managing finances. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is in the newsroom this morning. this is being billed as a workshop but there's serious issues in play here. >> reporter: this is supposed to be an ongoing conversation, but school closures not on the formal discussion list. however, a number of proposals related to declining enrollment

are. superintendent matt wayne wants the board to allow him to take quick action on creating a better staffing model for schools, how to run schools and classrooms at full capacity. he also wants the ability to restructure district-wide services to better serve students, and to find ways to leverage district properties. also, to create criteria for mergers, school co-locations and closures based on projected enrollment. staff and parents say the biggest problem is itself and how it manages its finances. they say the district is too heavy on administrators and paid too much money for a botched payroll system, some maintenance workers are still waiting for $1.1 million in back pay. >> our members are still owed money, not from last month, not from last week, but from october

of 2021. >> because of the way the district has managed their schools, people don't want to send their kids there. >> reporter: falling enrollment is one point in the superintendent's 46-page presentation to the board, which will also cover projected deficits and staffing shortages, some of which are up to 15% in classrooms and 25% in nutrition services. the board's statement says that the public will be included in this discussion all along the way. we suspect it's going to be a loud discussion this afternoon. >> very interesting. thanks so much, kris. 5:05 right now. a new twist in the firestorm of controversy set off by what had been billed as a doom loop walking tour. the creator of the tour has resigned from his job at city hall. the tour had been promised as a way to show the city's not so glamorous side. until yesterday, the creator's identity was unknown.

it turns out it was offered by the commissioner for the office of committee investment and infrastructure. a man named alex ludlum, a cost of $30. in his resignation announcement, ludlum called the whole thing satire. mayor london breed called it an error in judgment. we spoke with someone who owns a company called tenderloin walking tours who says satire is not needed right now. >> we are in a serious epidemic, a serious crisis. we don't need political footballs going back and forth across the field while we're dealing with tyrone and sheila laying on the damn ground. >> the identity of the poster became known when people demanded refunds for the canceled tour and ludlum's email address was included in the refund notice. a former police officer fired following a deadly shooting may soon be back on the job. the vallejo police officer was fired for shooting sean

monterrosa outside of a wall walgreens in june of 2020. officers were responding to reports of looting when the officer mistook the hammer in his sweatshirt for a gun. while a formal investigation was not conducted, a third-party review did lead to his termination. that was reported by overturned in arbitration. vallejo police have not issued a comment. developing right now in north carolina, students shaken after the deadly shooting of a faculty member on the unc campus in chapel hill. it happened yesterday afternoon. authorities say a gunman opened fire in the school's science building, prompting a shelter in place. officers later arrested a suspect, who is believed to be a doctoral candidate at the school. the relationship with the victim is still not clear. a live look in orlando this morning where people are bracing for the arrival of hurricane idalia. right now it's churning north of cuba with a potential to become a category 3 when it makes landfall tomorrow.

some 13 million people across florida right now are under tropical storm or hurricane alerts. governor ron desantis declaring emergency executive orders in 46 counties, with mandatory evacuation orders and school closures already issued. tampa international airport closed overnight ahead of the storm to give workers time to secure the jet bridges and equipment. right now the airport is set to reopen thursday, but it could all change depending on the storm. cinthia pimentel is tracking what's going on. we know the storm could change direction at any time. what are we looking at now? >> that makes it hard to tell people where exactly the worst of it will be. the key point is for everybody to make sure they're listening to those evacuation warnings. right now we're seeing the outer bands impacting cuba, inching closer to key west. and by later tonight it could reach category 2 with sustained winds at around 100 miles an hour. that's very violent and strong. as it continues to push on through later on into the

midnight hours, we can see it making landfall there. i want to pinpoint this area of cedar key, the big bend zone of florida, where the category 3 landfall is expected. we can see it gaining motion and energy from the warm waters there in florida. 100 degree waters are definitely feeding the storm, the winds are building up the convection and thunderstorms that are being seen. as we can see it rotating with the eye, the winds around the eye at around 100 miles an hour, we can see it impacting from tallahassee all the way through cedar key, tampa, and even fort myers is going to see strong, violent winds, that could also bring up the storm surge, which it tends to be the deadliest part of the entire hurricane. we're also dealing with some weather here in the bay area that's worth watching, some dry north wind that's going to start making a shift later on tonight into early wednesday. that could bring about not only some fire weather watch, but a

than the overall gdp of denmark at $406 billion. something smells fine in the state of denmark. it's money. the white house just released a list of drugs medicare will pay less for. ozempic not on it, but another diabetes drug is. ten in all. i spoke with someone in the drug industry who represents the people who invest millions in pharmaceuticals. he said drugmakers are concerned smaller profits will leave them with less money for research. >> which may mean that pharmaceutical companies choose not to be in this market or they may choose not to develop a drug for the american market. we've already seen some companies make some tough decisions because the economics under this new system make no sense. and so we face the inevitable choice of fewer medicines available in order to achieve some cost saving.

>> a new study take a look at the housing and rental markets in various american cities and asked the question, if you're renting, what kind of house could you get for the same payment you're making in rent every month? in some cities it does make more sense to buy. for instance, in las vegas the average $1,500 rent will also pay a mortgage on avenue 1,100 square foot home. that's a small house, but it's a house. where this breaks down is bay area. average in san jose nearly $3,000 a month, according to researchers, would buy a 574 square foot house. 500 square feet would be 25 feet by 20 feet. that's about three parking spaces in a parking lot. so less than a two-car garage. >> so a tub, maybe a bed, and that's it. maybe a sink. >> if you slept in the tub, you would be fine. >> get creative. >> college time, take me back. thanks so much. 5:17 this morning. new for you, getting paid to get

skies, 49 degrees. by the time you head outside to go to work, bringing along a light jacket, you'll probably lose it by the time you head out for lunch. plenty of sunshine and 80s at the noon hour. the rest of the bay area today is going to see temperatures a little bit warmer than yesterday. we are gradually warming up to our warmest day, which will be tomorrow. we'll have mid-70s in san francisco, a very mild day. we'll do some 80s around the immediate shoreline. as we go into the valleys, we'll see upper 90s in areas like fairfield, and we will do warm weather through the santa clara valley, along with hazy sunshine. i'll get to that in a second with all of the wildfire smoke. there is some more headlines that could spark some interest in wildfires, that could bring about gusty winds through the north bay tonight through tomorrow. those winds will become dryer, they could gust anywhere from 30 to 40 miles an hour. so any activity that does start

has the potential of spreading rapidly. we could see the north bay mountains being issued, as well as the diablo coming into the watch. we will bring you the latest as the weather service issues alerts. the smoke that is coming to us from the pacific northwest, mostly hazy. watch how it changes and shifts into the darker color as we go into tuesday, more so on wednesday, with the shift in the wind direction. if you have any sensitivities to this, please be careful. this is wednesday morning, the north bay, the coast and even through the tri-valley, seeing that smoke just push through. i think better conditions by thursday into friday as we get more return from the breeze off of the pacific. we do see those warm temperatures for wednesday that are bringing about those concerns. 94 in novato, 92 in napa. in solano county, part of the fire weather watch, 104 degrees in fairfield. so a very warm day today, hottest tomorrow.

san francisco also seeing those mild temperatures, hazy skies, and then we will eventually drop back into the 60s by the start of the holiday weekend. our inland valleys going from the 90s to upper 90s, and then more of a drop as we go into thursday, friday, and the holiday weekend. i just want you to be careful for the smoke and fire weather watch. we'll talk more about it throughout the show. mike is looking at changes. >> we're looking for the subtle differences. we see that on highway 4 out of antioch into pittsburg and pittsburg into bay point. concord moves smoothly. a little slowing toward the carquinez bridge, that is the stretch where there will be a closure starting thursday night, that portion of i-80 westbound will be closed from 780 down to highway 4. that's critical for folks coming in toward the east bay. we're looking over here to vallejo, a little slowing for highway 37. just starting with the morning commute. not kicking off yet for vasco road, still 17 minutes from marsh creek down to 580.

lingering as we go into the middle of the week. good morning, marcus and laura. on wednesday morning pg&e could cut power to seven california counties. let's take a look at the map. the areas in yellow, a little bit hard to see there, but that's the areas that are receiving the warning. it includes napa county, nearby lake county, and the big concern, high winds. it could be the first emergency shutoff of the year. not just pg&e, cal fire's north bay unit tweeted this out last night. the unit's engine and strike teams are back home after battling fires in other parts of the state. cal fire is saying it comes just in time as the fire weather watch has been issued. look at this scene yesterday in the santa cruz mountains. crews were able to contain this brush fire yesterday in the brookdale area, and luckily, cal fire says there was no strong winds there and it stopped at about 1.4 acres. so definitely a situation we'll be watching. i want to guide you through some

of those wind gusts hour-by-hour, as we go into midnight tonight, early morning of wednesday, look at where that color is more of the orange and purple shades, around winters, st. helena, and we're going to keep an eye on this not only for the winds, but the possibility of some of those wildfires that do start spreading rapidly. so we could see the north bay mountains and maybe the diablo range being included in this fire weather watch. that's at the national weather service's call and we will bring you that info as they make it available to us. and the shift in the winds will also make it more difficult to breathe for some people, as we are tracking not only hazy skies, but that wildfire smoke coming in from the pacific northwest. look at wednesday morning, we start with many shades of red through the north bay, the sacramento valley and most of the bay area will be impacted. as the day goes on, we'll see it

push through. wednesday evening, i think better conditions as we go into thursday and friday. so a couple of hours ahead to keep an eye on the forecast, and i'll be doing that right here. for now, back to you. >> thank you. to breaking news in san francisco in the tenderloin, rocked by a late-nice police shooting. the suspect now critically injured. >> bob redell is live for us this morning. police say the man was armed with a weapon, threatening people. >> reporter: correct. good morning to you, marcus and laura. san francisco police say this man was armed with a knife and threatening people in the tenderloin. a number of people who live in that neighborhood, as you can see in this video, they posted online cell phone videos of the scene. police tell us at around 10:20 last night they responded to a 911 call about this man. they made contact with him. during that encounter, at least one officer, according to police, fired their gun at the man. police say they called in the paramedic, who had been staged nearby. they started to help the man, he

was taken to the hospital, with life-threatening injuries. his current status, current condition unknown. as is normal with officer-involved shootings, the d.a.'s office is investigating, along with the department of police accountability and two internal units with sfpd. we hope to learn more at a news conference that's scheduled in san francisco at 9:00 this morning. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest, bob. 5:35 right now. authorities in oakland have yet to identify the victim in a deadly double shooting yesterday. it happened a little before 5:00 on international boulevard near 23rd avenue. a second victim is now in the hospital with unknown injuries. police are not saying if they know a motive in this case and no arrests have been made. there's new information coming to light on the participants in a wild melee that sent shoppers running for cover at the bay area street mall in emeryville. it happened sunday and involved hundreds of juveniles. one person was stabbed, but is

expected to fully recover. last night oakland schools stated the incident involved a large group of students. emeryville's mayor is praising the actions of police, saying the problems could have been far worse. >> to be able to peacefully disperse the vast majority of those folks and have people leave without any damage to property or further injury to people. >> last night the mall was quiet and included a greater police presence. oakland school leaders are reminding parents to keep tabs on their childrens' whereabouts. some reports indicate a social media post encouraged students to show up. a setback for tenants right groups after redwood city leaders delayed their vote on protection for renters trying to make it in the bay. dozens of low-income and migrant renters attended, hoping the council would approve two measures first proposed in 2021. one would provide new harassment protections and the other would protect renters on properties

where renovations are made. council members chose to table the vote until next year. >> we are really disappointed by the fact that the council decided to allow the continued harm of low-income renters in redwood city. >> landlords argue rent adjustments should be allowed in the event of substantial renovations. the council is calling for staffers to return next winter with more information and recommendations. get ready. the buzz is already turning into a mighty roar. levi's is just about to get ready for the arrival of the queen, beyonce. >> santa clara city council will make her honorary mayor, giving her a city like they did for taylor swift when she rolled into town. businesses are sure to be booming, along with traffic. so santa clara is trying to take steps to make sure everyone gets in formation. get it? if you have tickets, you should know traffic is expected to be heavy near the stadium.

the bay area overall has irreplaceable weather, so let's see what the day has for all of the beyhive home. definitely the warmest day that we will feel through the valleys, around san jose, around santa clara, we could be looking at those temperatures, 80s, 90s. very low 90s. as you make your way from san francisco down into the peninsula or from the inland valleys, you'll definitely feel that relief, especially if you're coming as far east as fairfield. as far as the forecast for beyonce, gates open at 6:00, 88 degrees right there. so very warm, not going to be too windy. those gusts around 20 miles an hour. i don't think it's anything that the beyhive can't handle. as the start of the show goes, nice, comfortable weather, mild, in the 70s, and cooling down by the time you get out into the upper 60s. overall a beautiful day to have a concert down here in the santa clara valley at levi's. we're going to see changes, though, at the bay bridge with

mike. we're looking where the metering lights have been activated in the last few minutes. these lanes are clear to the left. we're looking at the hov lanes, a smooth flow of traffic, no big surprises. we have slowing toward the carquinez bridge as well. in richmond we're seeing a slowdown. yesterday we saw quite a bit of clustering, shall we say, through the morning commute, toward about the 9:00 or 10:00 hour where things got hairy. we say see a similar traffic flow. remember, we talked about this already, we're going to have a full closure for 106 hours, basically from thursday night at 9:00 through possibly tuesday morning at 5:00, westbound 80 is going to be closed. that's this direction coming back into the area. say you went to sacramento, you head through berkeley, you can't on the carquinez bridge. you have to take the benicia bridge and cut across or down 680 and take 24 over.

overnight we continue to have work in the north bay, richardson, bay bridge, highway 101. locals know about that. during the course of the day from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., we may have one lane blocked the entire time. road work will be on the golden gate bridge. yesterday it was northbound, today it is southbound. one more issue in the city, a great issue if you're going to the game. 6:45, after-work game for the giants at oracle park. there may be crowds and delays. >> thanks, mike. some answers this morning to a mysterious land purchase in the north bay. it includes designs on creating a new city. ahead, the ultra rich silicon valley players tied to the deal and one lawmaker standing up to them. all the news from washington as well, including from the white house and from the courts

good morning. let's go to the east bay and say good morning in oakland. a little bit of a chilly start, but then by the time you're heading out the door, 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, lunchtime hour looks beautiful. already climbing into those 70s with plenty of sunshine. we'll top out at around 80 degrees, and then cooling things down with a more breezy afternoon. we'll talk about why the breeze might cause danger over the next couple of days coming up.

friends are prepared for the next couple of days. once it does make landfall, that's when hurricanes tend to lose their strength and eventually the hurricane dies off. back here at home, we are going to see warmer temperatures today. the hottest day is expected to be tomorrow. we'll do mild 77 in downtown san francisco for today, 80 in hayward, and our warmer spots definitely through the valleys, santa rosa, concord 94 and 89 in morgan hill. the winds are going to be a story over the next couple of hours into wednesday. we are going to be under a fire weather watch later tonight through the early morning hours of wednesday, because of the shift in the wind direction. it's going to be more offshore, more dryer winds as we go into wednesday, around 15, 20 miles an hour. those gusts locally in the mountains, especially in the north bay, could be around 40 miles an hour. any sparks of wildfires have the potential of moving quickly, maybe not the day to do any lawnmower work out there, at

least until we get into the weekend where cooler weather is expected. that's also going to bring about more smoke into the bay area. the smoke advisory is probably going to be extended over the next couple of days as we see more of this smoke coming in. tomorrow morning, very hazardous amounts, into parts of reading, ukiah, and the bay area gets covered in this as the afternoon goes on. the good news, it will be quick and pass as we get a colder front as we go into thursday and friday and that will bring about wild temperatures. we're going to spike on wednesday in brentwood at around the triple-digit mark and then drop down about 20 degrees as we go into friday and saturday and staying below average, even into the labor day holiday. san francisco, mild couple of days, but mixed in with that hazy suns, we'll drop into the 60s by the weekend. our inland valleys, we're not only watching out for heat if you're sensitive, but also the impacts from the wildfire smoke on our lung health.
