8:33 am
some haze will be moving through the city thursday. then we'll cool down for the holiday weekend ahead. in our inland valleys, the temperatures will be in the upper 90s, close to triple digit temperatures in some spots. it will turn breezy and cooler back into the 70s and 80s ahead yes? >> and that's your latest weather. >> all right thank you, al. just ahead, if you have ever struggled to help your kids overcome obstacles and disappointment in their lives, teachable moments and into successes. but, first, this is "today" on nbc.
8:36 am
this nex welcome back failure is a part of life, but it can obviously be hard for children so as parents, how can w help them turn those disappointments into valuable lessons? we have a parenting expert here and mom of two she is an author as well she spoke to parents around the country for her latest book called "eight setbacks that can make a child a success." you went around and spoke to parents around the country all of them seem to tell you if they could do it all over again, they would want their kids to make the same mistakes what else did the parents tell you? >> that was the biggest surprise i said, if i could give you a magic wand and you could erase this change from your child's life and they ranged from subtle to shocking mistmistakes all but one said i wouldn't
8:37 am
because what we learned from it was so valuable and we don't want to lose that lesson. >> the biggest take-away is that failure is not bad often as a parent, you think, what do i do to fix this challenge or mistake? how do we refrain that thinking and that fear? >> right so i'd like for parents to think about it almost the way we do with exercise. so failure is one of the best tools kids have for growing and becoming stronger. if you work out every day with one-pound weights, technically you are still exercising, but you are not tearing and repairing muscles. if you go to weights too heavy, it's not helpful you could get injured. we'll apply the goldilocks principle here i want parents to think about their kids failing and making mistakes right in that sweet-spot where it is enough pain to cause discomfort and get comfortable with that and grow from that. >> let's talk about the three step process you have going on here i have elementary school girls right now. one of the big challenges -- i like to think of it as a challenge, not a failure when they get there, obviously, it is the ability to find new friends, new peers when you start a class, you may not know anybody in your new
8:38 am
class when you get your teacher assigned. >> big fear for kids and for parents that think, i want my child to be liked. i want them to get along i call this the loner, a child having trouble connecting with their peers. maybe they're not getting invited to birthday parties. maybe they're home alone with you on the weekends. what can you do? the first step is contain, contain the problem. here is a fact-finding mission is my kid not finding friends because it is just a bad fit maybe it's not the right class or do they need special skill developments so start there the next step will be resolve. now we want to take some action on what we found that could be getting into a group to learn more skills, changing your environment. there are lots of things you can do to help here. and the last step is evolve. this is where it's most important for parents to hear this i don't want you to press on the bruise don't ask every day have you found a friend how's it going that feels like a lot of social pressure for a kid. >> and it pushes the kids away
8:39 am
when they don't want to engage in these conversations with you. when do you recommend you start that process of making new friends? >> any time you want to be the parent driving carpool you want to be the parent inviting kids over to play you want to have good snacks at your house there are things you can do tof >> the most dramatic step is to change schools altogether. >> it could be. but kids benefit from the opportunity to reinvent themselves from time to time. >> let's talk about the parents of middle schoolers. those years can be tough, right? you're in a new school and everybody is growing at different paces. what do you do to help those kids academically? >> we see a lot of kids in middle school that arrive there and suddenly the wheels fall off the court. entice new friendships. they're not doing as well as they did in elementary school and this concerns parents. big opportunity for failure here typically i see four reasons this happened. maybe the kid isn't being challenged enough. maybe they are being challenged
8:40 am
too much maybe they need to shift in a different class. maybe they have a learning difference these things start to emerge around middle school they may have done a good job masking that in elementary school or maybe, this is most common, they are really excited about a social life. any of those things could be causing kids to disintegrate at this point, parents just want to do some analysis on that. >> contain, resolve, evolve. okay that applies to high schoolers as well. let's just say as a high schooler you got sent to the principal's office asking for a friend. what do you do for a kid breaking the rules >> this is called the rebel. the rebel is going to spike in high school. they're going to break rules and it's going to feel scary because higher stakes when rules are broken there is a lot you can do. you want to apply a tourniquet, kind out why the bleeding is happening.
8:41 am
are they breaking rules and it's disruptive and annoying or is it actually dangerous and here you need to decide, do i need to corral the problem or do i need to corral the kid? either way, you want to contain the problem, resolve it and move on from it. >> this is a lot of good advice. the most important of all, maintain that conversation with your kids. that makes a big difference when they have a parent they can trust as an outlet as well for more advice to kids how they can handle setbacks, be sure to check out our website today.com/parents. sheinelle? >> good advice now it is time to save you some money straight ahead, jill is here this morning with exclive this morning with exclive steals and dusea - [narrator] every day, our lives are filled with choices,
