heightened security parents can expect to see on campus today. this is "today in the bay." >> good wednesday morning to you. 5:00 right now. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we're going to get to the breaking news out of florida this morning, the eye of idalia is approaching the area between tampa and tallahassee. first, we want to start with our local microclimate alert. kari, you have been monitoring the red flag warning. >> we do have a high fire danger for the north bay today, especially over the upper elevations above 2,000 feet. this is the mountains in the north bay where we are expecting the winds to really pick up as we go through the next several hours. we're also getting some wildfire smoke coming in, so it's a spare the air alert day. if you have any kind of breathing problem, you might want to limit your time outside. it's also going to be hot, as our valleys reach into the upper 90s and near 100 degrees. but let's talk about where that red flag warning continues,
5:02 am
where it did start late last night, these areas shaded in red. that's around calistoga, just to the east of santa rosa, and heading up toward lake county for much of that county today, under that red flag warning. some of those gusts as you go up above 2,000 feet may reach 30 to 40 miles per hour. that, coming along with very low humidity, and we'll also have some breezy winds at times. we're also tracking what's going on with hurricane idalia, now it's making landfall as a category 3 hurricane, and it does continue to slowly move off toward the east. it is expected to weaken as we go throughout the day, and then make it back out into the atlantic and then maybe start to loop again. we're going to watch out for that as we go through the next several days. the biggest story will be the storm surge coming along at the same time as king tides and the high tide as we go throughout the day, which may cause some of

the eye of the storm is scheduled to be right now. we thought it was going to hit straight into tampa, but it moved north in the last couple of days or so, and so we're still getting some of the remnants of that, some strong winds, some strong rain here and there. here officials are already making rescues. if you look over here, there's some military-style vehicles going in water that's about 5 or 6 feet high, the boats are ready to go in as well. we've witnessed three people being rescued so far. we were told that there was one child, about 1 year old, who also needed rescuing. the commander out here tells me that there are folks who are still refusing to leave, they're in their attics, they want to stay there. but they do not encourage that. folks who try to get out in their vehicles are stuck now in the middle of the roads, so now the rescue crews are having to go in and save some lives as
5:05 am
well. pets also being brought out here to safety. this has been going on for the last couple of hours or so. i was able to walk on this road, no problem at all, and so in the last couple of hours it's risen this much. so there is some concern here, again, folks here were told to evacuate a couple of days ago. some heeded the warning, others did not. so these crews are now having to come in. the focus right now in the entire state of florida is up north a little bit where the eye of the storm is making landfall right now. again, not that bad here so far, except for the flooding that's taking place here. there are no injuries, but rescue crews will be busy. >> damian this morning out of florida, thank you. coverage of hurricane idalia doesn't stop here. the "today" show will have live coverage all morning long with correspondents and crews spread across florida's panhandle.

"today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab joins us. this may have all started from a play date invite? >> reporter: that's what we're hearing, laura and marcus. the oakland unified school district believes yesterday's incident was a response to that invitation. police this morning are still trying to verify those claims, only saying the bomb threat contained racial undertones. a flyer for saturday's event promised to bring together black, brown and api families at chabot elementary. the event caused many comments on social media, some users accused the event of not being inclusive to everyone, including white families.
