microclimate forecast coming up. fremont moving nicely, pretty cool here. southbound 880 picking up the volume. more headlights heading toward silicon valley through the east bay. contra costa county continues the build. look at the number at the top. highway 4 very slow, antioch all the way into concord. concord building on south 242. vasco road just reached the half hour mark from marsh creek road down to 580. we have a careful eye on hurricane idalia. more coverage in just a moment. the white house also keeping watch. >> certainly. scott mcgrew, big disasters, even potential disasters can bring out the best and worst in leadership. >> yeah, definitely the worst in the case of george bush and hurricane katrina. katrina was so bad and he got so much blame, deserved and undeserved, that katrina is a political word these days like
6:47 am
watergate. if you're a leader, you do not want your situation to be your katrina. ron desantis, running for president, knows that. he, of course, is the governor there, so he would be involved one way or the other. he set aside campaigning in iowa for the moment and returned to florida. >> a legitimate surge, it's going to be a big, big deal and very, very dangerous. there we go with our power here. we're back. >> desantis, of course, will have to work with president biden on disaster relief. that's a challenge for any red state governor, particularly in the deep south, at least politically. remember, republican chris christie, who was the governor of new jersey at the time of hurricane sandy, he still gets grief over the time, more than ten years ago, he praised president obama as they inspected the damage from the largest atlantic hurricane in history. the feds brought with them $50
6:48 am
billion in relief, but to this day, christie gets grief from his fellow republican for praising the president. >> give me a hug. give me a hug just like you did to obama. >> amateur. >> you'll help elect me, too. >> give me a hug like you did obama. that was seven days ago. chris christie's opponents have criticized the governor for hugging the president. fox news called it a great big bear hug but it never happened. president biden has been speaking about the hurricane. the federal government says everything is ready, governor desantis will get whatever florida needs. and of course let's keep our eye on maui. the biden administration just announcing it will send $95 million more to hawaii through the new infrastructure law to rebuild and harden the island's power grid. >> thank you very much, scott. they certainly need the help there. 6:48 right now. let's take a live look at sfo. the place is expected to see a

huge number of flyers between now and the labor day holiday weekend. tsa is expecting to screen more than 14 million people at airports across the nation. friday is projected to be the busiest day, labor day holiday travel expected to be more than 10% greater than last year. overall this summer, tsa says the travel volume is the busiest on record. everyone is out and about. happening tonight, bay area stargazers will focus on the moon. >> i want you to keep a watch out for the blue moon that's making an appearance tonight. a blue moon refers to the second full moon in the calendar month, and this one is extra special. this is because it's also the second supermoon in the month of august. astronomers say two supermoons in the same month are extremely rare. they predict tonight's blue moon will look about 15% larger in the night sky than the normal full moon. last night i went outside and it was really bright.
6:50 am
not as big as i've seen before. >> you said it looked about 13% bigger last night. >> that's about right. >> we're at 15% tonight. >> there we go. >> that's the peak. we've also had clear skies around the bay area, and what we saw during 2020 was when we had fires, the moon had an orange hue to it when we were seeing those full moons. so we'll watch out for that tonight. this is a look at the sunrise this morning, where we are seeing an orange sunrise due to wildfire smoke coming in. we're also getting a clear sky across the bay area, including the golden gate bridge, where we are waking up to a clear sky this morning. so we're going to continue to see a lot of smoke drifting in today, with this being the worst of it. it is a spare the air alert day where people are advised to carpool or catch public transit to try to reduce our carbon emissions as we get a lot of wildfire smoke, as well as high amounts of ozone. some of that is going to continue to move in as we go into the afternoon and evening.
6:51 am
take a look at our temperatures today, reaching 97 degrees in morgan hill, 99 in gilroy, while san jose will reach a high of 90 degrees. we move over toward the east bay, where it's going to reach 90 in vallejo and 100 degrees in walnut creek, fremont headed for 90 this afternoon. for much of the peninsula, we're in the low to mid-80s, even upper 80s for palo alto, and along the coast it's in the upper 70s. in san francisco, 79 downtown, while we'll see 60s in the outer sunset. for the north bay, clear lake hitting 95 degrees. we're watching out for some of those hills in the north bay for that potential of a high fire danger for today. but we have better conditions ahead. as we get a low moving in for the weekend, it's also going to bring in rain very close by. it does look like a lot of that rain stays to the east of us, but it will bring in significantly cooler temperatures and some of the models showing that we could see enough light rain, maybe even some drizzle, especially near
6:52 am
the coastline, that could add up in terms of some precipitation hotels. take a look at our seven-day forecast. we're going from highs in the upper 90s to mid-80s tomorrow. so this is the hottest day we'll see, and then cooling down, with a big change in time for the weekend. mid-70s for friday and saturday. mike says right now the commute is fairly smooth. >> fairly smooth right now, but we are seeing that build. it's going to be stronger than yesterday's build, i believe. so we're looking at the flow, starting to slow through berkeley and richmond and building at the richmond bridge. blips through concord, slowing through hayward, same thing for sunol and pleasanton. in the south bay, the northbound route is really kicking in outside of the typical pattern, and on 37 a disabled vehicle. that's where the big concert is, avoid surface streets this morning. back to you. >> thank you very much. 6:52. happening now, you won't be able to take care of business at santa rosa city hall today.

with hurricane idalia, which made landfall in florida about two hours ago. >> the eye actually crossed along the big bend region of the gulf coast between tallahassee and tampa. it came in as a category 3 storm, after briefly reaching category 4 strength this morning. the national hurricane center expects storm surge to reach up to 16 feet in the big bend region. >> coverage of hurricane idalia doesn't stop here. the "today" show will have live coverage with correspondents and crews spread across the coast of the panhandle of florida. now, that starts for you in just a few minutes at the top of the hour. pg&e now appears to be following through in its planned power shutoffs due to high fire danger. the warning covered parts of seven california counties, and from this update outage map, you can see a handful of outages in northern napa county. parts of nearby lake county also facing outages, but no other bay area counties are expected to experience planned shutoffs.

moving you forward this morning, meteorologist kari hall is here now tracking the microclimate weather alert that we have today. this is the red flag warning that we have in effect for parts of napa and lake counties this morning, and it also extends toward yolo county and farther off toward the north and east. we are seeing quite a few of upper elevations dealing with gusty winds, low humidity, and any sparks could spread quickly. watching out for that red flag warning, and our air quality as we go throughout the day, as our temperatures heat up to near 100 degrees inland. oakland chabot elementary school will have added security when classes resume this morning after yesterday's bomb threat forced a campus-wide evacuation. the fbi has joined police into who is behind the threat. there was a recent play date invite which leaders say sought to bring together the black,
