7:01 am
battered as we speak by heavy rains and high winds from idalia. officials warning of a potential life-threatening storm surge. >> it's going to be a big, big deal and it's going to be very dangerous. roads quickly turning to rivers. schools, airports closed. al says the worst of it is far from over. we are spread out across the region with complete live coverage today, wednesday, august 30th, 2023. from nbc news, this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and a good morning to you. welcome to "today." it's 7:00 a.m. on this west coast on this wednesday morning. savannah and hoda are off. we want to get right to that breaking news, idalia, hammering
7:02 am
florida as we speak. >> look at the conditions in tampa bay this morning. the storm making landfall to the north of there about two hours ago. >> here's a look at the latest path. the national weather service saying as that storm pushes inland, damage could leave some areas uninhabitable for weeks and even months. >> and the airports are closed and that's impacting travel nationwide. and also news, what could be historic storm surge. >> mr. roker is standing by with the storm's forecast and path. and we start out with tom yamas in florida. how is it looking right now? >> reporter: good morning to you, craig.
7:03 am
we have an active rescue water e went to bed thinking it was going to be a category 3, and they woke up to category 4 at one point and tornado warnings, and now this historic flooding and lot of people are stuck right now. this morning idalia making landfall. the storm rushing ashore along florida's gulf coast, waves and torrential rain hitting florida overnight, and flooding the streets of st. petersburg and clearwater, and restricting access to some islands. florida governor, ron desantis, updating this morning. >> the storm and those conditions will change very, very quickly. wherever you are, hunker down and don't take anything for granted.
7:04 am
>> i think things are starting to happen. >> reporter: coastal communities got early impacts of idalia starting tuesday. violent waves crashing along the causeway as cars drove by, and further north in crystal river, residents like larry howe telling me he was waiting to leave despite the evacuation orders. when do you make that call? >> when i see water in the street then i will drive out. this morning some rescues beginning as many floridians struggle to make it out of the storm zone. >> it just started rising just so quickly. >> i don't think anybody expected it to be this bad.
7:05 am
as a matter of fact we have pas. and the massive size of idalia is intensifying along the gulf coast. >> very few people can survive being in the path of major storm surge, and this storm will be deadly if we don't get out of harm's way. >> reporter: just behind me you can see a home here, a property in yankee town that has been inundated because of the floodwaters. the river has met the bay and there is nowhere to escape. florida activated its eight urban search and rescue teams, and they may need them now because it's not the wind damage or buildings collapsing, which
7:06 am
will likely happen, but it's the water, the storm surge. this is just getting started. it's not high tide here until 4:00 p.m. eastern. craig? >> tom, earlier, for folks just joining us, you were in crystal river earlier, but now you are in yankee town. talk to me about the changes you have seen this morning? >> reporter: i have never seen a surge like this, and it could be happening because it's in the daytime, and we are seeing the water rising so fast, and it may sound strange, but i have never seen this in 20 years covering hurricanes, we saw animals, deer, running and getting stuck in the floodwaters. you know it's a bad situation when you know even the animals were caught by surprise. >> that's heartbreaking. okay, our senior national correspondent, tom yamas. stay safe. good luck with the rescue missions as well.
7:07 am
and then the storm surge pushing into tampa bay, and marissa is in tampa for us. what is the latest there? >> reporter: you can tell we are getting one of the bands coming our way from idalia, and it's hard to tell you if i am joining you from the streets of downtown tampa or joining you from inside the tampa bay, because right now they are one in the same. this is bay shore boulevard and this is a main thoroughfare through out tampa, and you can see somebody that tried unsuccessfully to drive through it, and the person in the car did need to be rescued. this is an area that is supposed to be completely evacuated, and it's not because we have seen people walking through here and walking in waist-deep water and paddleboarding through here. in a lot of ways, we have seen people not heeding the orders,
7:08 am
and we are seeing rescues. we are talking about downtown tampa. if you look further west, peninsula, st. petersburg, we have seen a couple rescues from those areas, one being in a mobile home park. there's a big concern when people are in the areas that are supposed to be evacuated because they are low lying and prone to risk. ahead of me, is that tampa general hospital. this is the only level one trauma center in the whole region, and we are talking about tampa bay's only level one trauma center, and you can only access it by bridge. the bridges you see behind me specifically. it's on an island. what they have the fences, and they are called aqua fences and they are supposed to protect them from upwards of 15 feet of
7:09 am
surge water, and we are only li peninsula say this is the worst they have seen in a long time. we are getting an outer band, and the surge is the main concern in tampa, but there's another concern. when we get the outer bands it creates prime conditions for tornadoes. if you look at the map of the tornado risks, it's half of the state. tampa, we are not in the direct path of idalia and we are clearly seeing the impacts of it and lots of risks we are keeping an eye on, guys. >> be safe. al is keeping a close eye on idalia's path and what is to come. >> good morning, guys. as you can see, we have this active situation, and in fact,
7:10 am
you can see the area of blue, that's excessive wind warnings right now. idalia getting ready to cross over into southern georgia, and it's 105-mile-per-hour winds moving northeast at 18 miles per hour. as marissa mentioned, we have a tornado watch that stretches from just south of orlando all the way into central georgia, and, in fact, somewhere near brunswick, georgia, we have tornado warnings up. this will be an ongoing threat. the main threat, storm surge. there's the wind and the rain but we worry about the storm surge, and that's the wall of water that gets pushed in, and especially around this area, the big bend. this is shallow water, so when you get a system like this coming in, that counter clockwise flow, it just piles that water up along the coastline. we are looking for right around cedar key, maybe 7 to 16 feet of
7:11 am
storm surge. was get further south that storm surge is lessening, and the system exits georgia and it will hug the coast, then we have the storm surge on the backside of the system, 2 to 5 feet, especially, savannah, brunswick and along the coastline. tomorrow morning it's a tropical storm just passing north of charleston if the path holds true. then south of wilmington and out into the atlantic by thursday afternoon. here are the impacts. we still have wind gusts from 50 to 80 miles per hour, and impassable roads, dangerous lightning. we also have tornadoes to worry about from orlando to wilmington. the landfall, 7 to 12 inches of rain from tallahassee to north carolina, and storm surge a problem as idalia exits and
7:12 am
heads down the coast. >> especially the full moon has high tide coming up in a few hours. al, we will come back to you in a few moments. you mentioned the big bend, and we watched the whipping wind and rain there, and perry, florida, and the public information officer for the sheriff's office there. thank you for carving out a few moments for us here. i know you have a lot going on. let's talk about what you are seeing on the ground right now. you are obviously in the elements. give us a damage assessment so far. >> okay. so right now what we are doing is we are in the stages of deployment. we have had winds too high for us to respond because it would not be safe for anybody to respond. now that the winds are dying down more, we will be able to
7:13 am
respond and that's where we are. >> your county is under a mandatory evacuation order, but do you have information on who may be stranded or needs help? >> we are receiving calls from people who require our assistance but we have not been able to get to them because of the wind speeds. we have people trapped in their homes and we have people with trees on top of their homes, and we have people where the tree went into their home and they have to get to another part of their home, and we have received several calls on that, and our main goal now is to get to those people and get them that attention. >> we can hear that wind whipping as you are talking there. you are at the county airport, we understand. what does the damage look like there at the airport? >> here at the airport we have a small plane -- we have two small
7:14 am
planes, and one was flipped over by the wind and the other one, you can see that -- you can see the wind damage and what is occurring to it -- i took a video -- as it was out there during the worst part of the hurricane. >> finally, and i know we have talked about this, the national weather service in tallahassee wrote, quote, idalia has unprecedented makings for this part of the state, and some may not have seen a hurricane like this one in centuries, and what kind of challenge does this pose for your region? >> well, it's unprecedented. we have never experienced anything like this. nobody who is working at the agency at this time or any of the public service agencies have seen anything like this. that is one challenge. the other challenge is we are a small community and close
7:15 am
community, and the and rescue. a lot of folks watching and listening, they could be thinking she's in florida, and clearly they are used to hurricanes, and this area, big bend, it connects the peninsula with the panhandle, and this is not part of florida that has seen a hurricane like this since somewhere circa 1850. this one is unprecedented on a number of levels. >> it's a scary one for them. we will continue to bring you the latest on idalia throughout the morning, but there are other stories making headlines, and we are learning more about the fatal shooting of the professor on the campus of north carolina. he made his first court
7:16 am
appearance yesterday, and the judge ordering him held without bound. he's charged with the first-degree murder of an associate professor, and yan, his profile has been deleted. 11 people were rushed to the hospital yesterday after experiencing severe turbulence on a delta airlines flight from italy to atlanta. it happened just a few minutes before that plane landed at jacksonville international airport. delta officials say both, passengers and crew members, were among those hurt. fortunately none of the injuries were life threatening. meanwhile the faa is investigating. let's talk about the forecast now. obviously this weather just continues to change, al. >> that's right. for the rest of the country, things relatively quiet, thank goodness. showers and thunderstorms moving
