23 hours ago. >> we have a look at the damage idalia has left behind, but first we turn to meteorologist, kari hall, who is tracking the storm's path more closely, kari. >> yeah, we are seeing the storm move out over the atlantic, and the impacts will continue to improve for today as the tropical storm moves away from north carolina. right now we are seeing the winds at 60 miles per hour moving through the east-northeast at 20 miles per hour so it has picked up in forward speed, which is great news, as it's moving away from land and back out over the water the next few days, and it will continue to wonder out over the atlantic and hopefully will continue to weaken. still a risk of more flooding as well as tornadoes could be around the carolina coast today. back to you. >> what a difference a couple

hours makes. thank you, kari. team coverage continues, and damian trujillo joins us. what is the focus for ground crews? >> reporter: it's cleaning up, kris. we are in an area called hudson beach here about 50 minutes north of tampa. some folks woke up to this or came home to this after the evacuations, and the boat is in their backyard, and kayla is the homeowner here. it's a little strange having a bate in your backyard? >> yeah, a little weird. a different lawn decoration, sure. >> what is the plan of action today? >> today we are working on cleaning up. we got a lot of stuff cleaned up yesterday, and we had friends come over and helped us get rid of things, and 1-800-dry-me out

victims. two events will be held at different locations. the events will include live music and continue into the nighttime hours. bay area covid cases are again on the rise as new covid variants start to emerge. the positive test rate is up 15% from last month, and daily hospitalizations are averaging 336 patients, nearly double from what we saw about a month ago. the spike is happening nationwide as well. since july, hospitalizations tripled across the nation, and health leaders now focus on a new variant also known as parolea. >> it has the ability to possibly evade immunity thus causing more infections,

immunity could be from the vaccines or illness. 5:06 now. we are taking a live look at dublin. the tri-valley will be just one place where you can expect another day of poor air quality. i know we saw it around parts of the bay yesterday. bob redell will have more in a live report at 5:30. the air district is expanding it's spare the air advisory in large part to fires burning elsewhere and burn into the bay area. the smoky haze could be seen and felt in napa yesterday with some there calling conditions the worst so far. >> not everybody is subject to the air quality warning or advisory, but you can still feel it and smell it. >> yeah, people were complaining of having itchy eyes and a scratchy throat and things like that, so if you have those

health issues or asthma, limit your time outside today. we are having smoke from fires burning from oregon and further north and pushing down into the bay area. here's a look at the forecast for today. where we see red is where we will have the hazy sky and the high concentration of the smoke coming in. look what happens later tonight and into the day tomorrow. all of this pushes off to the east and we are looking at improving air quality over the next 24 hours. that's the good news there. we have one more day to try and limit that time outside. it's not going to be as hot. we are going to see temperatures today headed for 90 in santa rosa. we had upper 90s yesterday but we are mostly looking at upper 80s today. in some parts of the bay area, it may be about ten degrees cooler and we are also getting a stronger breeze coming in, especially this evening. i will track more cooling for the weekend and even a slight chance of rain. that's coming up in a few minutes. mike has a look at where we

can find lower gas prices. >> yeah, prices are going up as you could imagine with labor day, supply and demand, and we learned about that in school, yeah. and santa clara county, 4.59 on west mott in sunniville. contra costa county, san ramon's lowest is 4.79, and then in san francisco we find prices under 5 bucks, 4.89 at castro gas and food mart on castro street, and this is all reported through gasbuddy.com. thank you for sharing. on the roadways, we are doing fine. we are looking at slowing traffic westbound, and then no slowing -- in fact, i don't know if it's there but chp has to verified. and over in crocket off of westbound 80, both directions, there's something just off the

freeway and that might affect surface streets. i will hand it off to you guys. you are staying in the same area, kris. >> yeah, the first day of a four-day closure on interstate 80 that will extend through the holiday weekend. caltrans will close all westbound lanes from 780 in vallejo to highway 4 in hercules, including the carquinez bridge for a repaving project. that will start at 9:00 tonight and will last until the early morning hours on tuesday. a little perseverance and a lot of heart, and sometimes hard work can pay off. >> don't doubt yourself. you can do it. >> we will introduce you to one south bay brewery. the ceo who apparently wants

forecast, coming up. a light flow of traffic out of oakland and on to the span. i did just see chp with an incident as you get into san francisco, so we will see if that's affecting the bay bridge or having a ripple going on out that's coming up. now, it's not enough to make up for losses for the month, and remember today is the last day of august. we get important inflation data coming up in 15 minutes. the pce, it's the one that fed watches carefully. san francisco's visa is on the board. "the wall street journal" reports this morning, visa and mastercard are going to increase the fees they charge merchants. not your fees, the fees they charge the stores though they may wrap that into your costs.

for those sensitive to the smoking and a high amount of particulate matter in the air, it will be a day where you have to limit that time outside. it's a little better in parts of the north bay, but just below the spare the air alert with some of the numbers in the moderate range. then we take a look at our forecast for hayward. as you are stepping out the door, it's in the low 60s. as we go throughout the day, it will be mostly sunny, but still that hazy sky will continue with our temperatures headed for the mid-70s at noon. then looking at our highs for this afternoon, reach into the upper 70s, so not bad at all. in fact, a lot of the bay area will be cooler than it was yesterday. we're feeling some slightly more normal temperatures for this time of year, reaching 84 in san josé, and 80 in napa and in novato, expect it to reach 85 degrees. let's take it to tomorrow, because all of us will have a significant cooldown. more clouds throughout the day, and we are also -- especially

for the coastline, we will see mist and drizzle, and we know it's going to be drizzly in san francisco. there are so many festival and events going on because of the holiday weekend, so hopefully you will get a chance to get out and enjoy it. we will see a trough coming in that will bring in nearby showers especially over the tahoe area. as we go into next week, temperatures start to warm up once again. let's look at gilroy and the 10-day forecast. we are going from seeing highs in the 80s and 90s topp 70s for today. an tn even cooler tomorrow at the high of about 73 degrees. we take a look beyond that and it's going to return back to the low and mid-80s. overall for a 7-day forecast, still monitoring for the smoky skies and the air quality, but beyond that it does improve significantly for the weekend and temperatures only reach into the upper 70s, and it's going to be the unofficial start to fall this upcoming monday, and it

will feel like that as the temperatures come down across the bay area. mike, you have been tracking the bay bridge? >> yeah, chp got a report of something going on around 9th on westbound 80 coming off the bay bridge. i have been watching a live look and you see the lights moving smoothly with no major problems. i have not seen slowing develop on the sensors either. it's a critical point for the bay bridge but no ripple because they did not activate the metering lights. there was no need but we will keep watching. and then the carquinez bridge, and kris talked about the closure starting at 8:00 or 9:00 tonight. you can not cross the carquinez bridge westbound, not until tuesday morning at 5:00 a.m. you can come across the benicia bridge, and then join westbound 80 and get through the rest of the east bay, or hit the walnut creek interchange and take 24

welcome back. august is black business owners' month, and we want to highlight one entrepreneur that never gave up on his plan to own a gilroy tap house. he created a tap house and set a grand opening for march of 2020 before covid derailed his plans. he spent the next three years redesigning and filing permits until this last may he and his wife opened bitter taphouse and

oregon and that border, and the smoke was coming down into the bay area but it will improve today. today we have a air quality advisory, and that is one step below the spare the day alert. ful it may begin to lift a little in the atmosphere, but we will see a pretty high concentration of it. look at what happens from the afternoon into the evening, this is the last day we will have to deal with these kinds of smoky conditions. let's go to today in the bay's bob redell. are conditions even better in the tri-valley this morning? >> reporter: that's the idea, the forecast in the bay area

management district, and there was a spare the air alert, but that's not the case today. you will smell the smoke from the wildfires in oregon, and i smelled it yesterday in the tri-valley. this was the scene last night in downtown napa where the sky was hazy, and we are no longer under the spare the air alert, but the bay area district does not expect the levels of pollutants to go above the national 24-hour health standard. and there's another advisory urging residents to take precautions for outdoor dining at local diners, and a bar in napa said he actually saw ash falling from the sky. >> it's not a great experience when you are outside eating and having to deal with smoke and ashes falling on your plate.

tahoe, it will be cool with off and on showers this weekend. mike, you are talking about a big detour ahead? >> yeah, first of all, let's show you what things are like now. san josé showing the first build, and nothing unusual. but tonight the full closure of westbound 80, and carquinez bridge, 780 across the carquinez bridge across highway 4 will be closed through the long weekend, so the detour is another 15 miles that you will take across the benicia bridge, if you join up anywhere south of richmond you are better off making 24 your route. that could be a little faster, or at least the same but it's a little longer, perhaps. and we are talking about tonight for the closure, we have 37, and highway 4 showing the traditional build about this

giuliani had not offered any of the evidence the court subpoenaed him for. >> ginger? >> thanks, scott. it's 5:48, and we are looking at walnut creek over the waeb. good morning to you joining us. we are in the east bay, and we were there yesterday and felt the hazy skies. kari, is that what we are going to see again today? >> we will see things gradually improve here. we are starting out with unhealthy air quality across much of the bay area as we get that morning inversion. this is all coming from fires burning around oregon and far northern california. as we go into today, here's a look at our near surface smoke model that shows some improvement as we go into the evening as we get a westerly wind, and that will push the smoke away from the bay area. we are starting out hazy this morning, but we are going to have some sunshine, a filtered sunshine. once again, it will improve. temperatures will be cooler

today. we're going from mid-60s to about 82 degrees at noon, and then reach into the mid-80s for this afternoon. looking at fremont, expect it to reach 81 today. mountain view reaching 80 degrees. about the same in san mateo. napa, reaching 79 degrees, and san francisco in the mid-70s. some of our warmer spots inland will be in the upper 80s. take a look at tomorrow. it will be time to break out the jackets and maybe long sleeves throughout the day as we are going to have temperatures only in the 60s and 70s all around the bay area. but it's also going to stay cloudy. looking at milder weather for saturday for all of those outdoor activities that we have the festivals going on, as we get the system spinning nearby, it will bring in rain across the region, but it looks like for most of the bay area it will stay dry. there may be enough cloud cover and mist and drizzle to add up in terms of precipitation between friday and saturday.

take a look at the changes ahead for walnut creek. we are going from highs in the low 80s today to only 72 tomorrow. on saturday, 78 degrees go into labor day reaching into the low 80s. so we will get a bit of a taste of fall as we unofficially start it, and of course that's when temperatures heat up again. next week we will be in the upper 80s in the valleys, and after a weekend of the 70s it will be a nice little change, but we have a lot of changes ahead. once again, watching out for drizzle throughout the day in san francisco tomorrow. mike, you saw slowing at the bay bridge toll plaza? >> yeah, we see these changes typical at this time and it's more dramatic this week. i think we is seen bigger builds on the commute, and schools are coming back online, and the last one was last week. and there's slowing into richmond and the build over to

welcome back. you're watching "today in the bay." in our climate in crisis, tomorrow is the first day of meteorological fall. that means temperatures usually start to dip across the country, and scientists at climate central are finding in the last 53 years from 1970 to 2022, fall temperature data in 247 u.s. locations show rising temperatures. in 96% of those locations the average warming is about 2.6 degrees in some of the most extreme warning is happening in the southwestern desert reason, and all four seasons are warming as well. this u.s. extreme heat across the u.s. and globe will likely linger into the fall, and this could result to risky heat and
