up-close look from neighbors and their long road to recovery. having to deal with smoke and ashes falling on your plate. >> poor air quality also continues today as wildfires elsewhere sent ash and smoke into the bay area. we're tracking a spare the air advisory and how long conditions will stay this way. this is "today in the bay." good thursday morning. it's the last day in august. i am ginger conejero saab. >> i am kris sanchez. laura and marcus have the morning off. we will begin with a live look at myrtle beach, south carolina this morning. at this hour what is storm tropical storm idalia is moving north. idalia made landfall in florida about 24 hours ago as a category 3 hurricane. we look at some of the damage

behind. it looks like it's raining once again, but we will turn first to meteorologist, kari hall, who is tracking the storm's path more closely. i know flooding is still a concern, kari? >> yeah, especially for north carolina and up around virginia as this continues to move off the mid-atlantic coast and back out over open water. we are going to continue to see conditions improve today as this tropical storm is still packing winds at 60 miles per hour, and moving to the east-northeast at 20 miles per hour, so that's the forward movement of this tropical storm that will most likely remain a tropical storm as it kind of wanders over the atlantic over the next couple of days. the good thing is that the conditions will improve, and that will give the people there an opportunity to start to clean up. so we are going to continue to track this and the impacts as we go throughout the day. back to you. >> thank you, kari. check out the new drone video from cedar key, florida. that's near where the eye of the

here on this roadway. a lot of folks tried to get out, and there's nowhere to park on the street so they tried to drive out as the floodwaters were rising but they couldn't, the cars were too low to the ground and they got stuck in the floodwaters. here's some of the video we shot yesterday. again, passco county sheriff's office was evacuating, and they made 85 missions of evacuations yesterday, and some people, again, refused to leave. i talked to the sheriff and he told me constitutionally he cannot force people to evacuate. he can't drag them out of their homes, and constitutionally they have a right to not evacuate, but then if it becomes a crisis or emergency, the deputies have to risk their own lives to rescue some of these folks. people are taking some of the stuff that got wet from the

floodwaters outside, and damaged goods, and they are trying to air out their garages. i see a lot of homes here are two stories high. the lower story, which is the garage level, they are made out of cinder block, so there's no drywall that needs to dry out. they just have to dry out the floors, so the cinder block is helping out and it looks like they have been through some of this before. today it's all about drying out and cleaning up, and maybe, hopefully not, but getting ready for the next one. >> hopefully not and they do get a break. thank you, damian. 6:03 now. the search for victims in maui's fire zone. as soon as today, maui authorities are expected to post a new list of the people still unaccounted for. one victim severely burned in the fire is finally heading home

dublin, the tri-valley. it's just one of the places where you can expect another day of poor air quality. our bob redell will have more in a live report at 5:30, but today the air district is issuing an air quality advisory, not an alert. it's due in large part to smoke from fires burning elsewhere yet blowing into the bay area. the smoky haze could be seen and felt in napa yesterday with some there saying the conditions are the worst so far. >> yeah. it doesn't matter what you call it for regular folks, they are, like, i can smell it, right? >> people kept asking yesterday, where is the fire? where is the fire? they thought it was so close. this is actually coming from oregon and the california/oregon border with the fires burning there, but the wind direction carried it right into the bay area. as we look at the microclimate weather alert and the air quality for today, there's a air quality advisory which is a step
