currents from delaware to massachusetts. the storms in the atlantic causing that rough surf. some beaches on long island actually had to be closed. fortunately they did reopen on friday which is why it is always a good idea to keep an an eye on the beach alerts and red-flag warnings. we know summer is winding down. tsa estimated 227 million people since memorial day weekend and another 14 million people expected to travel. are you watching from your vacation spot? if not, don't worry. we have you covered with travel times and tips. if you are leaving today, your best bet is to get on the road after 6:00 p.m. if you are leaving sunday, anytime. minimal traffic expected. on monday, if you are squeezing in summer, leaving after 7:00 p.m. is the best bet. on the beach, we have advice if

a lot of homes have been damaged. the house behind me is gone. the local resident has been here for decades and she tells me she is homeless and she lost a hotel around the corner. we went by yesterday and looked at everything. she was trying to rescue any item or save anything. of course, she thinks at her age, it will be difficult to rebuild. >> i'm going to have to start talking to fema or whoever to see what they will do or if they will clean it up. that's the main thing. that's about all i can do is clean it up. >> reporter: now the fema crews are on-site, but officials are warning the disaster relief fund is running out of money. in fact, they don't think they will make it to the end of the month let alone the end of the hurricane season. president biden asking congress to allocate more money.

the president is expected to arrive in the area today. he is expected to get an aerial tour and also meet with first responders and local officials, but not with the governor. president biden said he would meet with ron desantis, but yesterday, a spokesperson with the governor's office indicated the governor had no plans to meet with president biden noting that the impact of the president's visit would affect that recovery process. meanwhile, local authorities say they are focusing on reestablishing all of the necessary services like the power which is very necessary to continue with the recovery process. joe, peter. >> guad, thank you. >> we want to bring in the fema administrator who is traveling to florida in a few hours with president biden. she spent time on the ground this week. administrator criswell, thank you for joining us. >> good morning. thank you. >> as you saw and have seen in

person now, hurricane idalia's damage is as much as $20 billion at this point. directly targeting an area that is not used to seeing hurricanes and certainly not anything like what we saw here. what is your urgent priority right now? what does the long-tefrm recovery look like? >> when i was on the ground on thursday, what i saw was definitely in horseshoe beach homes and businesses significantly impacted by the water and the wind. we know that many of the communities along the coast were impacted by this, but also inland has had wind impact. our initial priority was to make sure we were saving lives and we were able to do that. all of the search and rescue teams have been demobilized and not just the state teams supporting ongoing operations. now the priority is to make sure we get the power pack up.

the state of florida has brought in additional resources to support that. we have the army corps of engineers ready to support with generators. >> administrator, you will head back to the region today with president biden who is not going to meet with governor desantis. the governor's office put out a statement saying such a meeting would shutdown ongoing recovery efforts. how do you make the visit without impacting the working done in florida? >> when i was on the ground traveling with the governor on thursday, we went to the remote and coastal communities and access is very limited. that is why the governor's team and my team mutually agreed on live oak on the area which is already starting the recovery. the majority of power is back online. people are hurting there, too.

people have had impacts. the president will meet with the local officials and family members. they will know the federal government is helping them. >> in the wake of idalia and the devastation in maui, we know there is not much left in the coffers. in the simplest of terms, without approval from congress, does fema have the emergency resources it needs to help provide relief? >> as we have been monitoring the health of the disaster relief fund over last several months, we were projecting the deficit to come in september. that's why i directed my team to

implement immediate needs funding. what that does it allows us to prioritize the funding we have to continue to respond to the life-sustaining missions like we are doing in florida and maui. ever since we did that, we have seen a less draw on the disaster relief fund to continue to support the efforts to make sure people have the resources they need and the immediate hours and days after a storm. we will watch it every day. we have enough as this storm is coming through. we need to pay attention as additional storms are brewing in the atlantic. we need to do everything we can to support the life-saving efforts. that's the priority. >> administrator criswell, thank you for making time to speak with us today. >> thank you. let's get a check of the rest of the forecast from angie. >> guys, break out the sunscreen. we have a lot of sun expected across parts of 2/3 of the country. rain across the gulf coast.

>> he passed away at the age of 76. we know the sound track of the labor day holiday weekend is going to be. >> no doubt. we celebrate his life in a bit. we check the headlines including 385 people unaccounted for after the devastating fire in maui last month. the number has not changed much since the last list a week earlier. it is much higher than was anticipated. on thursday, governor josh green said he believed the number of people missing would fall below 100. green said the exact numbers will take time to be finalized. the fbi and maui police department are asking family members of those missing to provide dna samples to help with the identification process. officials are warning people in the philadelphia area to be on alert this weekend as law enforcement searches for a convicted killer.

a34-year-old man escaped from prison two weeks after convicted of the death of his ex-girlfriend. officials believe he is still in the area. hundreds of law enforcement are searching with helicopters and drones and dogs. two suspects in the viral alabama boat brawl pleaded not guilty. montgomery police say this scene all started when a private boat was blocking a reserve dock leading to this. this altercation with the worker who tried to clear the space. it was an ugly scene. mary todd and richard roberts joined three suspects in entering not guilty pleas. the trial for all five suspects is set to start later this month. and also this morning, the mom and author accused of killing her husband and writing a children's book about grief

good morning. thanks for joining us on this saturday september 2nd. i'm kira klapper. an investigation under way after firefighters say someone broke into an east bay home and set it on fire. this happened on east street near 94th avenue in oakland a couple blocks from elm hearst park. the person suspected of starting the fire is in custody. the fire displaced four people. no one hurt. two vta mechanics recovering after suffering from smoke inhalation trying to extinguish this fire. it happened on a but parked in a maintenance yard. no passengers were onboard. this was one of ten electric buses all taken out of service as investigators look into what caused that fire. the group working to recall alameda county d.a. pamela price has paken another step forward.
